On the tracks of the Hermit Saint who became Pope The Spirit Path (66 km) is one of the most important trekking of our Park. It’s an ideal journey on the tracks of the hermit Pietro Da Morrone, who became Pope CelestineV and chose a winding mountain like the Majella for his course of faith. The Spirit Path starts from Badia di Sulmona (AQ) (white-red stripe and letter S), where the big Badia Celestiniana and the retreat of Sant’Onofrio are worth a visit; then the path climbs gently to the top of Monte Morrone, passing the retreat of San Pietro and the ruins of Santa Maria. From the summit of the mountain a long descent reaches the spa of Caramanico Terme (PE). During the second day visitors can pass through almost the whole wonderful gorge of Orfento and, after a short rest through the ruins of the retreat of Sant’Onofrio, they can climb up the steep and shady Rava dell’Avellana. Once arrived at Pianagrande visitors can decide to stay at the “Di Marco” refuge or to reach the beautiful retreat of San Giovanni. During the third day visitors can reach, passing through close beech woods and dry stone huts, Roccamorice, where they can visit the retreats of Santo Spirito and San Bartolomeo. The last stage reaches the retreat of Sant’Angelo in Lettomanoppello and the retreat of Sant’Onofrio in Serramonacesca and it ends in the next Badia di San Liberatore a Majella. Visitors can choose to pass through just one of the stages of the Spirit Path and visit the most beautiful retreats in day hikes. Before going up towards San Pietro, it is well worth taking a detour to the Hermitage of Sant’Onofrio al Morrone. Initially the trail goes up gradually, to then divert sharply to the right and the climb becomes steeper. You will cross a pine forest by going round some sharp hairpin bends until the trail leads into a cart path and then again onto a trail up to the Hermitage of San Pietro. Retrace your steps and the trail picks up again passing first through meadows first and then returning to the dirt road (deviation on R4 for the rocky hermitage of Santa Maria in Cryptis, and to get a supply of water slightly further up at an old fountain called “Le vicenne”). Returning to the crossroads the trail begins to rise again towards the higher part of Morrone until it reaches near the summit. From this point go down to the refuge of Iaccio della Madonna and continue, descending on the opposite slope of the massif. You will reach the Morrone farm lane (Q7) which you go through then go downhill to San Vittorino district on the River Orta, and you will finally reach Caramanico Terme. 1. 2. 3. Giunti in cima in breve si ridiscende verso Pianagrande dove a un incrocio deviando a sinistra il sentiero dello Spirito scende in direzione dell’Eremo di San Giovanni, mentre deviando a destra (B1) si raggiunge il Rifugio M. From the refuge descend again towards Pianagrande and after a stretch of trail in common with B1 deviate to the left towards the hermitage of San Giovanni. From the hermitage continue along a path which is in parts exposed and as soon as you come back up to Pianagrande, deviate downhill along the cart road and just after that turn right towards the deep valley of S. Spirito. As you go down into the thick beech forest, after about an hour’s walk you will reach the bottom of the valley (intersection with P), where you go back up on the opposite slope to reach, after a short stretch on a road, the hermitage of S. Spirito. After you have visited the hermitage go back to the intersection at the bottom of the valley and continue to the right. Once you are out of the forest, after a stretch of dirt road, turn right up a steep path through fern trees which goes down into the deep valley of S. Bartolomeo.
