Milan Facades
Introduction
Over recent years there has been an increasing interest in the architectural production of northern Italian architects in the middle part of the twentieth century. This
interest is arguably strongest in Switzerland and central Europe. To many there is a
refreshing level of experimentation and playfulness in the work of a number of architects working in and around Milan in the period of time spanning from the 1920’s
until the 1960’s.
The work contained with in this small booklet documents in the form of a
drawn survey of a number of facades of Milanese apartment buildings from this period. The selection is partial and it must be stted that with more time and resources
many more could have been included.
In this teaching studio we are interested in the ideas an architect explores
in the arrangement of the facades of buildings, and how we can learn from the work
of the recent past. It is through the making of facades that the character of a city is
formed and a sense of urban decorum established.
The facades contained in the following pages were firstly studied and carefully photographed as a portrait of their character and atmosphere. They were then
drawn accurately at the same scale, 1:100, with attention being given to the manner
in which they exist as buildings today, with all the additions and adjustments that have
occurred through history.
By making a survey of something we get to know it better as a subject.
Later in the semester we were very happy to observe the manner in which these
wonderful buildings were interpreted in the student’s work and the lesson they hold
disemminated.
