ontinua il momento d’oro dell’Italia nei tornei internazionali. Dopo la
magnifica promozione dalla World Cricket League Division 4 (WCL 4) a
Bologna nell’agosto 2010 e l’inattesa salvezza nella WCL 3 a Hong Kong lo
scorso gennaio, gli Azzurri nell’ICC European Division 1 T20 Championship,
disputato a Jersey e Guernsey a luglio, hanno strappato il biglietto per Dubai
dove dal 13 al 24 marzo 2012 disputeranno la ICC World Twenty20 Global
Qualifier, che vedrà 16 squadre contendersi i due posti riservati agli Associati
nella quarta edizione della Coppa
del Mondo T20 in Sri Lanka.
Si tratta di una performance
straordinaria della Nazionale nel
T20, ossia nel formato più breve
del cricket, probabilmente quello
meno congeniale agli Azzurri. Ma
nelle uggiose isole della Manica,
l’Italia ha giocato semplicemente
alla grande, conquistando il primo
posto nel proprio girone davanti
a Guernsey, i fortissimi padroni
di casa, e vincendo la decisiva
semifinale con Jersey, secondo
classificato nell’altro girone nonché
co-ospitante del torneo.
Il Campionato Europeo di Divisione
1 ha visto la partecipazione di
dodici squadre divise in due gironi.

taly’s purple patch in international tournaments continues. After the magnificent promotion from the World Cricket League Division 4 (WCL 4) in
Bologna in 2010 and the unexpected survival in WCL 3 in Hong Kong last
January, the Azzurri in the ICC European Division 1 T20 Championship, held
in Jersey and Guernsey in July, sealed their place in Dubai where they will
play from March 13 to 24 2012 in the ICC World Twenty20 Global Qualifier, that will see 16 teams vie for the two places reserved for Associates in
the fourth T20 World Cup to be
held in Sri Lanka.
It was an extraordinary performance on the part of Italy in T20,
the shortest format of the game
and arguably the one where they
are not at their strongest. But on
the misty Channel Islands, Italy
quite simply played wonderfully
well, arriving first in their group
ahead of Guernsey, the very
strong home team, and therefore
earning the chance to play in the
decisive semi-final against Jersey,
second in the other group as well
as tournament’s co-hosts.
The ICC European Division 1
Championship involved twelve teams split up in two groups. Italy
was in group A, in Guernsey,

con, oltre i padroni di casa, Austria, Croazia, Gibilterra e Norvegia. Il girone
B, a Jersey, era invece composto, in aggiunta agli anfitrioni, da Belgio,
Danimarca, Francia, Germania e Israele.
La Nazionale ha aperto la Campagna della Manica con la Croazia, squadra
imbottita di oriundi australiani che ha letteralmente spinto l’Italia sull’orlo del
baratro. Dopo aver limitato i croati a un modesto 89 grazie ad una ottima
performance al lancio, gli Azzurri sono letteralmente crollati in battuta, con
9 eliminati per 75 punti ed ancora 15 da conquistare, prevalendo, alla fine
grazie all’ultimo connubio di 18 run fra il n° 11 Din Alaud (10 not out) ed un
glaciale Damian Crowley che, con 26 punti su 33 lanci, ha giocato un innings
pieno di buon senso e di colpi da vecchio manuale di cricket.
Lo scampato pericolo ha galvanizzato l’Italia che ha poi sconfitto con clinica
facilità Austria e Gibilterra per rispettivamente 7 e 8 wickets. Da segnalare
l’invitto 28 di Peter Petricola contro gli asburgici e l’imbattuto 37 di Andy
Northcote contro i roccaioli. Una misura dell’eccellente prova al lancio
della Nazionale è data anche dai due maiden – evento rarissimo nel cricket
Twenty/20 – contro i gibilterresi.
La quarta partita, sulla carta la più difficile del girone, vedeva gli Azzurri
affrontare i padroni di casa di Guernsey. Forte dei tre precedenti successi la
Nazionale ha potuto giocare con una certa tranquillità. Gli isolani segnavano
188 punti e eliminavano per 150 punti gli Azzurri, che pur perdendo di 38
punti registravano un solido 53 di Northcote e non compromettevano il Net Run
Rate, risultato alla fine decisivo. A questo punto bisognava battere la Norvegia
per arrivare in semifinale. E così è stato con cinismo quasi sconcertante: Italia
185/2 in 20 over batte Norvegia 87/9 in 17.2 over con un connubio di 103
punti fra Crowley (77 not out) e Petricola (48 not out). La semifinale, partita che
avrebbe deciso la qualificazione per il torneo globale, sarebbe stata contro
Jersey, arrivata seconda nel Girone B dietro alla Danimarca.
Dopo che Alessandro Bonora, al sesto tentativo, era riuscito finalmente a
vincere il sorteggio, l'Italia andava in battuta per prima. Hayden Patrizi,
con 28 punti su 25 lanci, assicurava un buon inizio all'inning. Dopo la sua
eliminazione era Crowley a continuare la superlativa forma che lo ha visto
di gran lunga miglior realizzatore azzurro del torneo. Il riminese del Capo
di Buona Speranza realizzava 55 cruciali e sofferti punti contro gli arcigni
lanciatori del paradiso fiscale. La sua eliminazione all'ultima palla del 18°
over con il punteggio 117/6 non permetteva all'Italia di andare oltre quota
133, un punteggio che non metteva al riparo dalla replica degli isolani.
I padroni di casa partivano alla carica, 13 punti dal primo over di Alaud,
Croatia, Gibraltar and Norway. While group B, in Jersey, pitted, in addition
to the home team, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany and Israel against
each other.
Italy’s Channel Islands Campaign started against Croatia, a team, mainly
composed by Australians of Croatian extraction, which pushed Italy to
the very edge of defeat. After having restricted the Croatians to a modest
89 thanks to an outstanding bowling performance, the Azzurri collapsed
abjectly, 9 down for 75 and still 15 to get. At the end, though, Italy won
thanks to a 18 run a 10th wicket partnership between last man Din Alaud (10
not out) and Damian Crowley, who showed the icy temperament required for
his matchwinning 26 in 33 balls, in what was a sensible innings full of good,
old-fashioned cricket strokes.
This 11th hour escape galvanised the Azzurri who then got rid of Austria and
Gibraltar with consummate ease by respectively 7 and 8 wickets. Noteworthy
performances were Peter Petricola’s 28 not out against the Hapsburgs and
opener Andy Northcote’s 37 not out against the Rock Dwellers. A measure
of Italy’s bowling excellence were the two maidens – a red herring in T20
cricket – bowled against Gibraltar.

LE QUALIFICAZIONI PER LA COPPA DEL MONDO T20
Si tratta di un sistema in due fasi: la prima consiste di cinque tornei regionali (Africa, Americhe, Asia, Asia
Orientale/Pacifico ed Europa), con tre paesi qualificati dall’Asia, uno dall’Asia Orientale/Pacifico e due
dalle altre tre regioni. Questi dieci nazioni si uniranno alle sei qualificate di diritto (Afghanistan, Canada,
Kenya, Irlanda, Paesi Bassi e Scozia) per comporre le 16 partecipanti all’ICC WT20 Global Qualifier che si
svolgerà a Dubai dal 13 al 24 marzo 2012.
Al momento si sono qualificate per il torneo globale: Namibia ed Uganda (Africa), Bermuda ed USA
(Americhe), Papua Nuova Guinea (Asia Orientale e Pacifico) e Danimarca ed Italia (Europa). Il torneo di
qualificazione per l’Asia si svolgerà in Nepal dall’1 al 10 dicembre prossimi con favoriti, oltre ai padroni di
casa, gli Emirati Arabi Uniti, Hong Kong e Oman.
A Dubai sono in palio 2 posti per la quarta edizione della Coppa del Mondo T20, che si svolgerà in Sri
Lanka a settembre 2012. Campione uscente è l’Inghilterra, vincitrice nei Caraibi nella primavera 2010.
THE ICC WORLD T20 QUALIFIERS
The qualification process is structured in two phases: the first consists of five regional T20 events (Africa,
Americas, Asia, East Asia Pacific and Europe), with three countries qualifying from Asia, one from East Asia
Pacific, and two each of the other three regions. These ten teams join the six ODI countries (Afghanistan,
Canada, Kenya, Ireland, Netherlands and Scotland) automatically qualified for the event to compose the 16
participants to the ICC WT20 Global Qualifier that will take place in Dubai from March 13th to 24th 2012.
At present, the following countries have qualified for this global event: Namibia and Uganda (Africa),
Bermuda and USA (Americas), Papua New Guinea (East Asia Pacific) plus Denmark and Italy (Europe).
Asia’s qualifying tournament shall take place in Nepal from December 1st to 10th with the hosts amongst the
favourites with Hong Kong, Oman and UAE
In Dubai 2 places are at stake for the fourth T20 World Cup, which will be held in Sri Lanka in September
2012. England is the defending champion, having won in the Caribbean in the Spring of 2010.

La Nazionale Under 19 ha preso parte
all’Isola di Man dal 27 luglio al 2 agosto
al Campionato Europeo – Division 2.
Gli azzurrini si sono classificati al quarto
posto tra le dieci partecipanti. Dopo aver
battuto nell’ordine Germania, Spagna e
Gibilterra, la Nazionale ha pareggiato
con i padroni di casa in una partita non
giocata a causa della pioggia.
Il Net Run Rate ha relegato l’Italia al
secondo posto rispetto all’Isola di Man.
Nella finale per il 3° - 4° posto l’Italia ha
ceduto di misura alla Francia 167 – 171/7.
Nazionale Italiana U19 – U19 Italian National Team
UNDER 19
Italy Under 19 took part from July 27th to August 2nd in the Isle of Man in the European Championships - Division 2. The Azzurrini finished fourth out of
the ten participating teams. Having beaten in the first three games Germany, Spain and Gibraltar, Italy saw the decisive group game against the hosts
abandoned without a ball being bowled due to persistent rain. Net Run rate favoured the Isle of Man relegating Italy to the 3° - 4° place play off which was
lost to France by three wickets: 167 – 171/7.
ma poi si spegnevano lentamente sotto i precisi lanci azzurri. Alaud reagiva
alla grande al maltrattamento iniziale con due eliminazioni e la persistenza di
Petricola e Dilan Arsakulasuriya limitava i battitori di Jersey. La svolta decisiva
al 16° over. Con Jersey 94/3, necessitando di 40 in 5 over, capitan Bonora
dava la palla a Crowley, lanciatore occasionale, che nel giro di 4 palle si
liberava del connubio Carlyon - Gougn che aveva già realizzato 40 punti.
Era l'inizio di una processione con i battitori locali che entravano e uscivano
rapidamente senza riuscire a produrre più punti. Era Gayashan Munasinghe
con una mortifera serie finale di 7/2 su 12 lanci a sancire la più inattesa delle
vittorie azzurre con il non troppo risicato margine di 14 punti. Una grande
prova di squadra intorno ad una monumentale prestazione di Damian Crowley,
manteneva così vivo il sogno iridato.
Nell'altra semifinale, la Danimarca prevaleva nettamente su Guernsey 136 a
78 e poi batteva l'Italia nella platonica finale, con entrambe le squadre già
sicure della qualificazione alla fase globale. La vittoria importava molto ai
danesi che hanno così parzialmente lenito l’amarezza della sconfitta subita nei
confronti degli Azzurri nella WCL 3.
Prossima tappa a Dubai. E chissà cosa hanno in serbo i nostri magnifici ragazzi.

The fourth match, the most difficult in the round robin, was against the hosts
Guernsey. On the strength of its first three wins, it was a game the Nazionale
could manage and tackle with no great pressure. Against the islanders’ 188,
the Azzurri managed 150, losing by 38 runs despite a gritty 53 by Northcote, decisive in the end to bolster the eventually decisive Net Run Rate. All
that now remained to be done in the round-robin group matches was to beat
Norway. And that’s exactly what occurred, with almost disconcerting cynicism: clinical Italy 185/2 in 20 overs beat hapless Norway 87/9 in 17.2 over,
with a 103-run partnership between Crowley (77 not out) and Petricola (48
not out). The semifinal, the decisive game for qualification to Dubai, would
be against Jersey, which had finished second in group B behind Denmark.
Alessandro Bonora, at the sixth attempt, finally won the toss and Italy opted
to bat first. After opener Hayden Patrizi, with 28 off 25 balls, set up a fighting platform, it was up to Crowley to do rest, confirming the splendid form
that saw him emerge as one of the tournament’s top scorers. The romagnolo
from the Cape grafted 55 hard-earned and crucial runs against the miserly
bowlers of the Fiscal Paradise. But when he was out off the last ball of the
18th over with the score at 117/6, Italy managed only a further 16 runs off
the last 12 balls, posting 133, a respectable score but not out of the reach
of the islanders.
The home team started well, blasting 13 of Alaud’s opening over, before
steadily petering out against the Italian bowlers’ uncanny precision. While
Alaud reacted well against the initial walloping with two wickets, both Petricola and Dilan Arsakulasuriya delivered with nagging accuracy ball after
ball, to frustrate the Jersey batsmen. The match, though, was sealed in the
16th over when Jersey on 94/3 needed 40 in 30 balls. At that point skipper
Bonora handed the ball to part-time bowler Crowley, who in 4 balls got rid
of the menacing Carlyon - Gough partnership, which had already put 40 runs
under the belt. The dismissal marked the beginning of a woeful procession in
which batsmen got on and off the crease in rapid succession without being
able to score. At the end it was Gayashan Munasinghe, with a deathly spell
of 7/2 in 12 balls, who sealed the most unexpected of victories. And that
too with a comfortable margin of 14 runs. A great team effort by the Azzurri,
inspired by Damian Crowley monumental performance, kept Italy’s world cup
hopes well alive.
In the other semifinal, Denmark easily overcame Guernsey 136 to 78, subsequently beating Italy in the platonic final, with both teams already certain of
their places in the global qualifier. The victory mattered mostly to the Danes,
who thus partially mitigated the scorching defeat against Italy in the WCL 3.
The next stop is Dubai. And who knows what our magnificent boys have in
store for us.
