SASKIA SASSEN
Sociologa, conosciuta per le sue ricerche in aree come la globalizzazione (con le sue
dimensioni sociali, economiche, e politiche), l’immigrazione, e le città globali.
Olandese, Saskia è cresciuta a Buenos Aires ed in Italia. Ha iniziato i suoi studi
universitari in filosofia e scienze politiche all’Université de Poitiers (Francia),
l’Università degli Studi di Roma, e presso l’Universidad de Buenos Aires prima di
trasferirsi nel 1969 negli Stati Uniti dove ha conseguito un Masters (1971) e poi un
Ph.D. (1974) in sociologia ed economia presso l’Università di Notre Dame.
Attualmente è titolare della cattedra “Robert S. Lynd Professor of Sociology” alla
Columbia University dove è anche co-direttore del Committee on Global Thought.
Inoltre è Centennial Visiting Professor of Political Economy presso la London School of
Economics. Autrice di molti libri su temi collegati alla sociologia urbana, tra i suoi più
recenti scritti ci sono la nuova edizione di Le città nell’economia globale (2010),
Territorio, Autorità, Diritti (2008), ed Una Sociologia della Globalizzazione (2008).
L’anno scorso è stata eletta dalla rivista Foreign Policy come una dei 100 Top Global
Thinkers per il 2011.
Saskia Sassen is a sociologist known for her work on globalization (including its social,
economic, and political dimensions), immigration, and global cities.
Born in the Netherlands after the war, she grew up in Buenos Aires and Italy. She began
her university studies in philosophy and political science at the Université de Poitiers
(France), the Università degli Studi in Rome, and the Universidad de Buenos Aires. In
1969 she transferred to the University of Notre Dame in the United States where she
obtained both her masters (1971) as well as her Ph.D. (1974) in sociology and
economics. Saskia was the Ralph Lewis Professor of Sociology at the University of
Chicago for a number of years. She is currently Robert S. Lynd Professor of Sociology at
Columbia University where she also co-chairs the Committee on Global Thought. She
divides her time between New York and London where she is Centennial Visiting
Professor of Political Economy at the London School of Economics.
A prolific author in urban sociology, some of her most recent books included Cities in a
World Economy (4th edition, 2011), Territory, Authority, Rights: From Medieval to
Global Assemblages (2008), and A Sociology of Globalization (2007). The Global City
came out in a new fully updated edition in 2001. Her books have been translated into
21 languages. She is currently working on When Territory Exits Existing Frameworks
and contributes regularly to www.OpenDemocracy.net and www.HuffingtonPost.com
Last year she was selected as one of the 100 Top Global Thinkers of 2011 by Foreign
Policy.
