have just been replaced with gondolas. Home to one of cinema’s
most esteemed annual film festivals and a world-renowned art
biennale, Venice has become a playground for those with a taste
for the finer things in life. Where else can you bask in old world
charm, while being inf luenced by new, cutting-edge art at the
same time? On this visit to Venice, we explore the modern art
wonderlands masterminded by some highly inf luential adults.

Palazzo Grassi & Punta della Dogana
Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana have two very
different backgrounds; the first, an opulent palace
whose deed has passed through the hands of powerful
Venetian families, foreign bankers and industrialists,
the latter, a former customs warehouse. What they
have in common is François Pinault, the French
billionaire and philanthropist behind the hugely
successful PPR company, which owns luxury brands
like Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Alexander McQueen,
Stella McCartney and Yves Saint Laurent. Not your
‘everyday’ business tycoon, Pinault’s reputation as
a serious art aficionado precedes him. He sits at the
helm of Christie’s auction house and owns a private
art collection estimated at a cool $1.7 billion USD.
The François Pinault Foundation first acquired
Palazzo Grassi in 2005, commissioning legendary
Japanese architect Tadao Ando to renovate the
building into a public exhibition space. Palazzo
Grassi packs the splendour of a grandiose
Neoclassical palace, juxtaposed against provocative
and elaborate contemporary works. Ascend the
marble staircase and step into a screening room
to watch short art-house films by the likes of
Francesco Vezzoli, wander into a chamber that has
been transformed into a spooky forest (Gunpowder
Forest Bubble, Loris Gréad, 2008) and marvel at
giant metal sculptures that can go for over $30
million USD by the incomparable Jeff Koons.

background molto diversi: il primo è un opulento
palazzo di proprietà di potenti famiglie veneziane
prima e di industriali e banchieri stranieri poi; il
secondo è un ex magazzino un tempo adibito a
dogana. Li accomuna il filantropo e miliandario
francese François Pinault, l’uomo dietro all’immenso
successo della holding PPR, che possiede marchi
quali Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Alexander McQueen,
Stella McCartney e Yves Saint Laurent. Pinault
non corrisponde affatto alla figura del magnate
‘tradizionale’. La sua fama di grande appassionato
d’arte, ormai, lo precede. È alla guida della casa d’aste
Christie’s e il valore della sua collezione d’arte privata
è stimato la bellezza di 1,7 miliardi di dollari.
La Fondazione Pinault acquisì Palazzo Grassi
nel 2005, incaricando il leggendario architetto
giapponese Tadao Ando di ristrutturarlo per farne
uno spazio espositivo. Palazzo Grassi coniuga lo
splendore di un grandioso edificio neoclassico con le
complesse e provocatorie opere d’arte contemporanea
che ospita. Salite la scalinata di marmo, entrate in
sala proiezione e godetevi i corti di autori del calibro
di Francesco Vezzoli. Passeggiate in una stanza

for both. At Punta della Dogana,
works are amplified by the sheer
dimensions available for them.
Maurizio Cattelan’s striking and
poignant pieces are often displayed
to great effect here, as are Edward
Kienholz’s installations.
La collezione Pinault viene esposta a
rotazione tra Palazzo Grassi e Punta
della Dogana (anch’essa ripensata
da Tadao), quindi vi consigliamo di
visitarli entrambi. L’impatto delle
opere esposte a Punta della Dogana
risulta anche maggiore grazie alle
dimensioni dello spazio museale,
come accade nel caso degli intensi,
stupefacenti lavori di Maurizio
Cattelan e delle installazioni di
Edward Kienholz.

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection
Mining heiress Peggy Guggenheim was one of the
first high profile figures to make Venice her art
paradise, settling down in the 18th century Palazzo
Venier dei Leoni. She counted groundbreaking
artists such as Jackson Pollock, Marcel Duchamp
and Alexander Calder as good friends, hosting
exhibitions and social events in her home. Her
dedication to 20th century art led her to amass one of
the largest collections of Cubist, Futurist, Surreal and
Abstract masterpieces of the period – “buy a picture
a day” was one of her token resolutions.
Palazzo Venier dei Leoni is the perfect place to spend
a Venetian afternoon perusing her beloved collected
works that include Pablo Picasso’s La Baignade, 1937,
several of Jackson Pollock’s paintings such as Eyes
in the heat, 1946, and Alchemy, 1947 and Joseph
Cornell’s uncanny box art works. Wander through
the premises, soak up the sun on the waterfront
terrace and pay your respects in the sculpture garden
where Peggy’s ashes are interred alongside those of
her cherished pets. End your visit by writing down
a wish and placing it on the olive tree in the garden,
donated by Yoko Ono.

mineraria, si stabilì nel settecentesco Palazzo Venier
dei Leoni, fu una delle prime figure di rilievo a fare
di Venezia il proprio paradiso artistico personale.
Buona amica di artisti d’avanguardia come Jackson
Pollock, Marcel Duchamp e Alexander Calder,
Peggy usò la sua casa per organizzare mostre ed
eventi sociali. La passione per l’arte del ventesimo
secolo la rese una delle più grandi collezioniste di
capolavori cubisti, futuristi, surrealisti e astratti
dell’epoca. Uno dei suoi motti più noti era
“comprati un quadro al giorno.”
Palazzo Venier dei Leoni è la meta perfetta per
passare un pomeriggio a osservare l’amata collezione
della Guggenheim, che comprende La Baignade
(1937) di Pablo Picasso, molti dipinti di Jackson
Pollock (come Eyes in the heat del 1946 e Alchemy
del 1947) e le inquietanti scatole di Joseph Cornell.
Passeggiate nel palazzo, godetevi il sole sulla terrazza
affacciata sull’acqua e rendete omaggio alle ceneri
di Peggy, sepolte nel giardino delle sculture insieme

Ca’ Corner della Regina
Miuccia Prada is one of the most fiercely
respected fashion designers in the fashion
industry today. The man by her side: Patrizio
Bertelli, her business-savvy husband. Together
they transformed Prada from a small family
business into one of the most critically and
financially successful luxury fashion labels.
Their shared fascination for modern art led
them to form the Prada Foundation in 1995,
commissioning contemporary art works that
push the limits of the discipline.
There are over 700 works between the Prada
Foundation and their own private collection.
Last year, Prada Foundation announced its
sponsorship of Ca’ Corner della Regina, a
splendid, but slowly deteriorating 65,000-squarefoot palazzo that stands on the Grand Canal
(directly across the way from the Peggy
Guggenheim Collection). Prada and Bertelli
have committed to restoring it to its former glory
and holding exhibitions with pieces from their
collection, which includes works by artists like
Anish Kapoor and Damien Hirst.
Al giorno d’oggi, Miuccia Prada è una delle
stiliste più rispettate del mondo. Al suo fianco
c’è il marito Patrizio Bertelli, grande uomo
d’affari. Insieme hanno trasformato Prada
da piccola azienda a conduzione familiare a
marchio d’abbigliamento tra i più importanti
e redditizi. La comune passione per l’arte
moderna li ha portati, nel 1995, a costituire
la Fondazione Prada, che commissiona
avanguardistiche opere d’arte contemporanea.
Tra la Fondazione e la collezione privata
della coppia si arriva a oltre settecento opere.
L’anno scorso la Fondazione ha annunciato
l’intenzione di sponsorizzare Ca’ Corner
della Regina, uno splendido palazzo che
copre un’area di quasi ventimila metri quadri
sul Canal Grande (proprio di fronte alla
Collezione Guggenheim), che però stava
lentamente andando in rovina. Prada e Bertelli
si sono impegnati a riportarlo all’antico
splendore e a usarlo per ospitare una parte della
loro collezione, che annovera opere di artisti
quali Anish Kapoor e Damien Hirst.

sprayed my wrist with one of

Until recently, access to an address in
Milan’s upper-crest Piazza Tricolore area
was reserved for residents. Now it’s as
simple as booking a table at Rubacuori
Restaurant in the splendid Château
Monfort. Helmed by Executive Chef
Pasquale D’Ambrosio, this charming
spot with its heart-shaped seats and
bright atmosphere blends elegance with
innovative cuisine.
Fino a poco tempo fa, l’elegantissima
zona di Piazza Tricolore, a Milano,
era riservata ai residenti. Oggi, invece,
è più semplice: basta prenotare al
ristorante Rubacuori, nello splendido
hotel Château Monfort. Capitanato dal
capochef Pasquale D’Ambrosio, questo
affascinante locale dalle sedie a forma di
cuore e dall’atmosfera allegra unisce una
cucina innovativa a una grande eleganza.
“The first time I saw this space it
was still a construction site,” recalls
D’Ambrosio. “Thanks to the principal
architect’s imagination, she was able to
make me envision just how wonderful it
would all turn out to be… This place is
like a second child, because I’ve seen it
evolve from nothing to what it is today.”

What is your cooking style?
My goal is to bring prestige to the
simplest of ingredients to excite the
palate. People call me a poet of the plate
because I’m always searching to tell a
story with my cuisine. My menus are
always accompanied by a story.

What can we expect from the
dinner menu?
Mediterranean with just the right touch
of elegance, I’m a nationalist and so it is
essential that everything I use be made
in Italy.
Why the name Rubacuori (which
translates to ‘stealing hearts’)?
(Grinning) When you dine in my
restaurant I borrow your heart, fill it
with emotion and then I give it back to
you at the end of the meal.

Cucina mediterranea col giusto tocco
di eleganza. Sono nazionalista, quindi
per me è essenziale che tutti i miei
ingredienti siano made in Italy.

mi prendo in prestito il tuo cuore, lo
riempio di emozioni e te lo restituisco a

Chef background
Hailing from the Neapolitan
hamlet of Soccavo, D’Ambrosio
started working in restaurants at
the age of 15. “On my first day, I
had to cook over 200 spare ribs. I
went home stinking of meat and
my mother shouted at me, saying
she didn’t want me to do this
kind of job!” he recalls laughing.
D’Ambrosio’s road to chef-dom
includes training both in Italy and
abroad in France, with working
positions in Paris, London, Tokyo
and New York before returning to
serve as Executive Chef in several
of Italy’s most prestigious hotels.
In 2009, D’Ambrosio focused his
efforts on creating healthy menus
rich in energizing antioxidants,
for which he was recognized
with distinction by ASSIC (the
Association for Nutritional Safety
in the Kitchen).
D’Ambrosio’s cuisine and plate
presentation can be likened to
works of art. “Thanks to the early
encouragement of my former
superior, at 24 I was allowed
the freedom to experiment with
whatever came into my head
and through this I learned that
cooking is the world’s greatest art
form. We chefs must be humble
and constantly searching to
understand it, without distorting
its principles.”

The first time we saw Bar NHOW from afar, we were
instantly intrigued. Funky, colourful and experimental
décor, a lively mature crowd and a great location. Milan’s
Tortona neighbourhood is home to many of the major
fashion labels’ showrooms, so be sure to dress your best
when chilling with these industry players. The bar has
a great cocktail and spirits menu that blends the classics
with inventive cocktails like Chocolate Martinis. Try
their ‘Night in Venice’ Aperol spritz with Champagne,
soda and balsamic!
La prima volta che abbiamo visto il NHOW ne siamo stati
subito attratti. Arredi bizzarri, colorati, eccentrici, clientela
matura e vivace, splendida location. La zona Tortona
ospita varie showroom di grandi nomi della moda, quindi

architecture and artworks to discover. You’ve arrived
at the height of Florence’s tourist season so we advise
hitting attractions earlier in the day to avoid crowds
and taking day trips to the surrounding countryside.
Visits to the Uffizi Gallery, Palazzo Pitti and the
Accademia are most certainly in order as well as to
religious sites, principally the Basilica di Santa
Maria del Fiore and the Basilica di Santa Croce
where the remains of Niccolò Macchiavelli and
