S PECIALE EIMA IN- EIMA INTERNATIONAL 2006 • EIMA INTERNATIONAL 2006 • EIMA INTERNATIONAL di Stefania Capponi AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY SCREEN STARS A by Stefania Capponi gricultural machinery playing leads not only in the field but in decidedly unprecedented roles on the silver screen. Feature films over the ages have, in fact, not rarely provided portrayals, stories and various interpretations of such real, every-day objects: farm machinery. This is why UNACOMA, in cooperation with DAMS, the University of Bologna Department of Entertainment, decided to promote and manage a very special event in the framework of EIMA International 2006: a review given over to the image and role agricultural machinery has played, and still plays, in the world’s movie industry. Providing the idea with substance was not easy because lengthy and careful research was needed to track down the materials (some not made public) and get them to Bologna from a number of countries, including the United States and Russia. And no one was happy about presenting only documentaries for the viewers. What was especially wanted were feature films from various periods, some of them authentic masterpieces by illustrious directors, in which agricultural machinery, land reclamation and earth moving were essential features for the plots of the story. The product of so much commitment is a rich and stimulating program for the review which, over a five-day run, will screen twenty films in a wide range of genres (from documentaries, and musicals to works of social commitment, brilliant comedies and on to cartoons for children). There will be four screenings per day in a cinema hall set up for the purpose inside the trade fair grounds (Sala EIMAMovie, Pavilion 25/26, Mezzanine, 1st floor). Moreover, the schedule includes an interesting conference which, with the support of critics and experts, will look into the 8 – MMW n. 10-11/2006 MACCHINE AGRICOLE STAR SULLO SCHERMO UNACOMA organizza a Bologna una rassegna dedicata ai più bei film di tutti i tempi che hanno immortalato e raccontato le macchine per l’agricoltura. In calendario anche un convegno sul tema, con la partecipazione di critici ed esperti UNACOMA is organizing in Bologna a review dedicated to the finest films of all times which have immortalized and told the story of machinery for agriculture. Also on the schedule a conference on the issue, with critics and experts taking part M acchine per l’agricoltura protagoniste non solo sui campi ma anche, in veste decisamente più inedita, sullo schermo. The overriding theme on the playbill is the relationship between man and machine, one to which each filmmaker assigns a different value and is given treatments of varying intensity. The decidedly original and poetic vision in The Straight Story (Une Histoire Vraie) (US/France/UK 1999), David Lynch’s beautiful work, was shot against the background of rural America in which the most authentic figure in the narrative is a John Deere lawn mower. The Straight Story, based on a real story, chronicles a trip made by 73year-old Alvin Straight from Laurens, Iowa, to Mt. Zion, Wisconsin, in 1994 while riding the mower. The man undertook his strange journey to mend his relationship with his ill, estranged, 75-year-old brother Lyle, his only living relative. After his brother suffers a heart attack, Alvin decides to put away their differences and visit him after many, many years. So, alone, just to see his brother again, he begins a long journey through hundreds of miles, calm and confident of his unusual means of transport, slow but extremely solid and reassuring. US 1936) provide the point of departure for a bubbling comedy in which the quiet salesman, Alexander Botts, tries to make a big sale of gigantic Earthworm tractors to grouchy lumberman Johnson. Since Botts doesn’t really know anything about tractors, and since the old-fashioned Johnson is opposed to tractors of any kind, it isn’t going to be an easy sell. But Botts perseveres, encouraged by Johnson’s daughter, getting in all kinds of trouble with the machines, which provide a perfect backdrop for the comedy role. Farm machinery can also be transformed on the sound stage into a set for song and dance numbers, as is shown in Summer Stock (US 1950), starring Judy Garland and Gene Kelly. In this musical, New England farmer Jane Falbury (Judy Garland) allows a group of actors to use her barn as a theater for their play. In return, the cast and crew have to help with the farm chores. Jane performs one of her songs while driving a tractor and comedy erupts as other members of the cast attempt to cope with the machinery. Another musical on the bill is The Old Barn Dance (US 1938) with Gene Autry, a western which exalts American farming traditions 10 – MMW n. 10-11/2006 con quattro proiezioni giornaliere in una sala cinematografica appositamente allestita all’interno del quartiere fieristico (Sala EIMAMovie, Padiglione 25/26, Ammezzato, 1° Piano). Un’altra famiglia americana di agricoltori alle prese negli anni Ottanta con la crisi economica che ha colpito l’intera contea del Tennessee e con le difficoltà da affrontare per mantenere in vita la propria fattoria, lottando contro la violenza distruttrice del fiume, è al centro della storia raccontata da Il fiume dell’ira through the clash between honesty and the leading character, a horse trader, and, on the other side, the greed of the tractor company Thornton Farming Equipment, which forecloses when the ranchers can’t keep up payments on their tractors. This theme of conflict between innovation in the form of mechanization and the old ways is given magnificent treatment by the genial Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein in Staroye I Novoye (The Old and New) (USSR 1929) and Aleksandr Dovzhenko in Zemlya (Earth) (USSR 1930), two classics from the silent era. Change, progress, revolution are identified in both films with farm machinery, tractors in these cases, livestock raising equipment (a milk skimmer), which graphically portray the new way of thinking and new roles in society for the Russian peasants exploited by their land. The movies have not, however, always upheld agricultural machinery as symbols of progress and improving the quality of life. In the extraordinary film directed by John Ford, The Grapes of Wrath (US 1940), based on the novel by John Steinbeck, the Joad family is kicked off their farm in Oklahoma in the dustbowl years of the 1930s. After foreclosure, the disposed farmers miMMW n. 10-11/2006 – 11 EIMA INTERNATIONAL 2006 • EIMA INTERNATIONAL 2006 • EIMA INTERNATIONAL 2006 • EIMA grate westward to California. They are defenseless against the power of mechanization and the might of industry which looks only to profit. Tractors are portrayed here as the mechanical arm of the big companies which buy up the land without thought for the farmers who lived off it. Another American farm family is featured in the film The River (US 1984), directed by Mark Rydell. Farmers Tom and Mae Garvey, played by Mel Gibson and Sissy Spacek, are caught in the grip of a staggering national economy. Short of money, the farmers are being forced to hold out against an unscrupulous developer who wants to take over their property for a speculative housing project. Stefania Capponi Viewers can look for similar situations in Troublesome Creek: A Midwestern, a 1997 documentary which provides a moving portrait of the Jordan family of farmers in southern Iowa who are determined not to abandon their family farm. And finally, women and agricultural machinery are the duo featured in The Land Girls (UK/ France 1998) directed by David Leland, a story of three young courageous women of the city and the events that would change their lives. The film is set in the middle of World War II when young women from very different walks of life join the woman’s land army and are sent together to a farm in Dorset. Their experiences of the rural life, milking, baling hay and working the land (with one of them determined to plow an entire field on her own) change their lives forever. Stefania Capponi
