L’azienda è appartenuta a diversi personaggi tra When and how did your passion for the film world arise? Cinema has always been part of my life and my family. My mother always said that my bottle "was made of celluloid," and both her and my father and above all my grandfather before, at the time of silent films, loved and worked in this world. Outside of the spotlight in this field, there were always family lineages due to the fact that the cinema does not require special skills but it is a work built on the experience and for those like me who inherit such a cultural background should be able to navigate on a boat built over time by his own family. Before becoming President and AD of the Twentieth Century Fox, what did this important society represent for you? Although I have previously worked for very important film companies I have to say that Fox has always given me an emotion that other companies did not give me. It has always been the cinema for excellence thanks to the sound of the fanfare, the jingle that always accompanies the logo of the Twentieth Century Fox before the beginning of a movie, and that undoubtedly evokes in the collective imagination the sound of cinema as if it was a call. Would you like to tell us briefly the story of how, where and when the FOX was born? The history of the Twentieth Century Fox is one that undoubtedly lies in a prominent position. The name derives from the fusion of two separate companies: the Fox and the Twentieth Century. During this period the famous and unmistakable fanfare at the beginning of the film has also been selected among a number of other Jingles. The company is owned by several people including Richard Zanuck, who directed it with his family for many years. Perché un film abbia successo bisogna saper dosare elementi basilari come “la storia”, determinante per il successo dell’opera cinematografica, con elementi accessori come la “La Fox ha sempre rappresentato il cinema per eccellenza” “It has always been the cinema for excellence” Subsequently it passed into the hands of an oil entrepreneur Marvin Davis that has sold the Fox to Rupert Murdoch in 1984, and now he is the current owner, who has brought great changes, transforming the company into a factory of contents. The reorganization of Murdoch gave Fox a much more industrial structure than it had before and this has led it to occupy the most important places in the world cinema scenery. What are the titles of Fox's of which you are mostly proud? Avatar, Titanic and Ice Age. They are important titles not only economically but also in terms of film: they are without doubt the most beautiful films that have had an exceptional response from the public and also thanks to the company policy of Fox which has always focused on new ideas. For example in 1997 with the movie Titanic directed by James Cameron (despite his previous films had not had good results in terms of collection), Fox decided to invest, with a budget that arrived to 200 million dollars, on a movie at the time had a semiunknown cast (both characters, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, were actors at the beginning). So Fox has always wanted to invest principally on the idea and not just on celebrity of the actors. The same thing happened with the movie Avatar, a brilliant idea for a great love story. In your opinion, what is the success of a film determined by? It’s a matter of chemistry. Because a movie is successful you must be able to determine the basic elements as "the history" that determines the success of the film, with additional elements such as the director, the cast and the work of professionals that can bring added value to the product. Everything has always surrounded by a great idea. “Senza l’aria non si vive e senza il cinema nemmeno” “Without air we cannot live and without films either” Must Know: Cinema I I I I I I I I I I The Twentieth Century Fox was founded in 1904 in New York by William Fox who sold his clothes production activity and with the earnings he bought a "popular show" at low cost. In those days, "the popular show" was the legal term to indicate a shop with a capacity of less than 299 seats where you could see films that were transmitted through a light box that enlarged images and projected them against a white wall on the opposite side of the store. Together with his partners Moss and Brill, Fox used the profits of his first “ popular show" to open other 25 rooms of this type. The next step was to open a store for the exchange of films, one of the first at national level. In 1913, the rapid growth of the cinemas industry made almost impossible to obtain new movies so Fox began producing his own films. Two years later, together with other pioneers of the cinema industry as Adolph Zukor (Paramount) and Carl Laemmle (Universal), Fox decided that the temperate climate of California would facilitate filming throughout the year, so decided to transfer his offices to the west and in 1915 he founded the Fox Film Corporation. The film industry continued to prosper and in 1917 Fox bought 13 and a half acres on the west side of Hollywood with a total investment of $ 215,000. In 1934 the property value had risen to two million and a half. The audience demanded an increasing number of films of better quality and at an impressive pace, beginning to be fascinated by the 'stars' of the cinema. Fox was one of the first manufacturers to note this trend and launched stars like Theda Bara and Tom Mix, a former rodeo participant, who became one of the most famous cowboy of the big screen. In 1925, Fox needed to expand once again his production facilities and was lucky enough to find 250 acres of land in Beverly Hills where you can still find the Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. The advent of sound films in 1927 radically transformed the film industry. The success of the Fox Movietone with the procedure for recording sound on film led the company to face a series of reorganizations and financial arrangements. In 1929, Fox Films surprised both Hollywood and Wall Street by buying 55% of Loew's, Inc., the related company to rival MGM for about $ 55 million. Later the purchase of Loew's was annulled by order of the U.S. government and several banks took control of the shares of Loew's. During this business upset occurred in 1930, William Fox was expelled from the company that had founded, by a group of major shareholders and he belonged to the Fox Film no more. So they needed a new leader at Fox and in 1932 Sidney R. Kent became its President, holding that office until his death in 1942. In 1935, Fox Film Corporation fused with a production company in difficulty, the Twentieth Century Pictures, directed by Joseph M. Schenck, and so the newborn company took its current name, Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. The fusion brought Schenck to become chief executive officer and allowed to Darryl F. Zanuck to join the company as Vice President of production. In twenty years Zanuck created some high quality movies that won 150 Oscars for the studio. When Sidney Kent died in 1942, his place was taken by Skouras, a leading operator of cinemas. Almost immediately, sparks broke out between Skouras and Zanuck to push up to leave Fox in 1956 to become an independent producer. After his exit, Fox had a period of decline. It was so forced, by the serious financial difficulties, to accept Zanuck's return, but this time as President. Zanuck took with him his son Richard, and soon, father and son changed the image of a wavering company, making it a prestigious protagonist in the world of entertainment. In 1969 Richard assumed the office of President. The influence of Zanuck on the Fox is still current. Dennis Stanfill was chief executive officer of the Fox when Zanuck left it in 1971 until 1981. Stanfill has managed the transition of Fox, transformed by a corporation with shares sold to the public into a private company in early 1981, when the independent oil magnate of Denver Marvin Davis bought the studio. After the abandonment of Stanfill, Alan J. Hirschfield was appointed chief executive officer and held this function until September of 1984. Surely there are great expectations for the fourth episode of the animated film Ice Age. Its success is determined by the fact that history, and the way it is told, is able to involve the whole family. This kind of film is particularly loved by the age group that we call young adult (24/25 years). Great expectations for Prometheus by Ridley Scott and for the work, now in pre production of two films by Steven Spielberg. What is the meaning of the word cinema? For me cinema is equivalent to the word air. Without air we cannot live and without films either. What is your favourite kind of movie? The films, to which I’m closely tied, have a single protagonist : Totò. I particularly believe the film “Totò, Peppino and the malafemmina” is an absolute masterpiece. In general for me all Totò films are therapeutic: when I am a bit tired, or low mood, I see one of his movies and my day changes. It is a character to whom I feel tied and in the ‘70s, when I started working, I attended an award ceremony about Totò, where I received a poster that showed him with a very serious expression. Over time, I have found out that this picture, which I always carry with me since my second working week, is a representation of my philosophy of life. In addition to the cinema what are the other passions of Osvaldo De Santis? The sea. I am so fond that I can indicate the location wherever I am, I feel its direction and I always have a great need to make long walks and that is why I am very bad in those cities where it is difficult to reach it. It happened to me several times to leave suddenly from Rome and go towards the coast just for the pleasure of breathing a little sea air. For me it is without doubt a place that I cannot help it and how I can I take refuge in my house at Eolie islands. 161
