For the first time in Melbourne since this historical film premiered eleven years ago,
Dall'Italia All'Australia will be screened at the Eolian Hall in Carlton accompanied by the
authentic 3rd Class Lunch that was served aboard the steamship when it set sail 92 years
ago!
In 1924, Italian film director Angelo Drovetti embarked on an epic 8,000-nautical-mile
SS Regina d’Italia in 1924
voyage with his movie camera. The result, Dall'Italia All'Australia (From Italy to Australia) regarded by many as the most comprehensive film ever made of a migrant voyage. This
silent black and white film, chronicles the voyage of the S.S.Regina d’Italia (Queen of Italy) one of three passenger ships first built for the Lloyd Sabaudo Line at the turn of last
century.
The film showcases the panoramic views witnessed by Italian, Yugoslav, Greek, Arabic and
Flinders Street Station in 1924
Jewish migrants as they stood atop the deck of the old steamer during their seven-week
world odyssey from Genoa to Australia, by way of Egypt and Sri Lanka, arriving in
September 1924.
Author and historian, Anthony De Bolfo, who discovered the lost footage, will introduce the
film and conduct a Q&A and Storytelling session following the screening, giving members of
the audience an opportunity to share their personal stories. Italian folk music - written by
Kavisha Mazzella to provide a score for the silent film – accompanies the movie. ARIA
Award winner Mazzella sings, plays the guitar and accordion, and is joined by fellow Aria
I Viaggiatori headed by ARIA Award
winner Kavisha Mazzella
recipient, Irini Vela (bouzouki, guitar) and ‘I Viaggiatori’ – comprising David De Santi
(accordion) and Mark Holder-Keeping (saxophone, clarinet).
The Società Isole Eolie invites you on a journey through time, as you enjoy the pranzo
(lunch) that was served on the liner back in the day (3rd Class Menu). The Eolian Hall in
Carlton’s North will be transformed into the dining room of the steamship and guests are
invited to come dressed with a touch of the 1920s.
This special event is the final function celebrating the 90th Anniversary of the Società Isole
Eolie - one of Australia’s oldest social and cultural Italian associations, founded on the
2nd August 1925.
Most importantly, the screening of this historical film is a pre-cursor to the upcoming
exhibition ‘From Volcanoes We Sailed: connecting Aeolian generations’ at the
IMMIGRATION MUSEUM OF VICTORIA - Opening 30TH April until 30TH October 2016:

THE MELBOURNE PASSENGERS
Is your family name listed here?
The following is a list of Italian, Greek, Albanian, Polish, Yugoslav, Palestinian, Arabic and Indian passengers who
disembarked the Regina d’Italia in Melbourne on the voyage filmed by Angelo Drovetti for Dall’Italia All’Australia in 1924.
Amongst the Melbourne passengers them was Giacomo Silvagni, the father and grandfather of legendary Carlton
footballers Sergio and Stephen Silvagni respectively. As most of the passengers’ names were written in freehand rather
than typed onto the manifest, spelling inaccuracies are likely.
