Museo Italiano Education kit Post-visit activities –– Beginners & Intermediate –– www.museoitaliano.com.au –– 1 –– Post-visit activities Image slideshow – Beginners and Intermediate Teacher Notes Teachers can enrich student’s understanding after the visit to Museo Italiano by showing them images from the Slideshow. The following guided questions links to communication and thinking as students begin to reinforce identify key messages that are incorporated within the exhibition Museo Italiano which include: • Connecting with culture and transporting Italy to Australia • Maintaining culture, bringing people together and expressing one’s Italianism. • Acquiring / assimilating and accepting the ‘new’ culture. • Setting up for the future, establishing professional identity, acquiring of new skills and matching old skills to needs of Australian society. • Growing up in a new culture. The following questions in English can be used for discussion with students of a beginners/ intermediate level of Italian. Bambini – Children English: 1. Describe the activities that the children are doing in these images. 2. What were some of the games played in the past? 3. Do children play in the same way today? Italian: 1. Quali erano i giochi che facevano i bambini nel passato? 2. Trovi che anche oggi i bambini fanno gli stessi giochi? What are some of the things that the Italians did together in their spare time? Reflect on the things you do with your family. What are the similarities and differences between your family and the Italian families? 2. In one of the images a woman is making pasta. What are some of the tasks and activities that are done around your house? Intermediate 1. Look at the images in this section. What does it tell you about the importance of the Italian family and the need to be close with other Italians? 2. What does this tell you about the backyard activities of Italian families and their need of preserving their culture? 3. Imagine that you have migrated to a new country that doesn’t speak English. You cannot speak the new language. What kinds of problems might you face? For example: At school? In a shop? With radio/TV? On the train/bus? The contribution made by Italians to Australian society is vast and varied. Look at the images and describe the types of businesses that Italians set up. 2. Research using the internet some of the following industries that Italians contributed to in Australia: a. The Italian wine makers b. The Italian cane cutters of Queensland c. The Italian market garden communities d. The Italian tobacco farmers e. The fishing industry of Western Australia and New South Wales f. The building industry g. The hospitality industry Italian: 1. Students who have migrant parents or grandparents should be encouraged to make a digital story of their family or even themselves. Guidelines: 1. Point of the story 2. Dramatic question 3. Emotional content 4. Script development - 300 words for a three minute digital story 5. Storyboards and Images - matching image to text 6. Using voiceovers - Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ 7. Choosing a soundtrack to accompany story 8. Pulling it all together using Movie Maker http://www.moviemaker-new.com/au/ A starting point for digital story telling is to observe other digital stories.
