Centro Primo Levi, New York
Inaugurato a New York nel 1998, il Centro Primo Levi contribuisce a diffondere la
conoscenza della storia ebraica italiana e dell'opera di Primo Levi, scrittore e scienziato
che ha sollevato le questioni fondamentali per la definizione dell'idea di memoria nelle
società contemporanee. Il CPL veicola per il pubblico di lingua inglese il lavoro di
organizzazioni accademiche e comunitarie in Italia e Israele e coordina progetti di
cooperazione, pubblicazioni e programmi culturali e universitari.
Fondato in collaborazione con il Centro Primo Levi di Genova, il CPL presenta
annualmente un simposio internazionale dedicato a letture interdisciplinari e internazionali
del lavoro leviano per il quale collabora con il Centro Internazionale di Studi Primo Levi di
Torino.
Il mensile digitale del CPL, "Printed Matter" raggiunge mediamente 5000 lettori con
argomenti di storia, cultura e attualità che avrebbero circolazione molto limitata al di fuori
dell'Italia. Le risorse offerte dal centro sono utilizzate da studenti, insegnanti, istituzioni
culturali, festivals, biblioteche e case editrici che accedono da un unico portale a
informazioni su libri e film dedicati all'ebraismo italiano.
Tra i progetti promossi dal CPL è l'archivio di storia orale Americordo che raccoglie
testimonianze sugli esiliati ebrei che a seguito delle Leggi Razziali furono obbligati a

Il CPL opera sotto gli auspici del Consolato Italiano di New York e in collaborazione con
l'UCEI e con molte comunità ebraiche italiane.
I giornali che ne seguono le attività newyorkesi sono il New York Times, il New Yorker,
Time Out New York, il Forward, la Jewish Week, America Oggi, I-Italy e Tablet Magazine.
Inspired by the humanistic legacy of writer and chemist Primo Levi, who survived
Auschwitz and defined the place of memory in modern societies, Centro Primo Levi is
dedicated to studying the history and culture of Italian Jewry, sharing beyond linguistic
borders its current ferments and future perspectives. With over twenty centuries of history
and a unique tradition of communal diversity, tolerance and integration, the Italian Jewish
community is today considered one of the most vital minorities in Europe.
Through cooperative policies, programs, networking and publishing, CPL helps individuals
and institutions coordinate goals, optimize resources, and ensure that the historical
heritage and contemporary ideas of Italian Judaism are accessible in English through a
unified portal. The activities dedicated to the work of Primo Levi are conducted jointly with
the Primo Levi International Research Center in Turin.
CPL was founded in collaboration with the Centro Culturale Primo Levi in Genoa.
A significant and diverse constituency follows CPL’s programs and publications, including
general public from different backgrounds, academics, students, as well as members of
the media and the press. Every season, universities, Italian and Jewish community
centers, Italian Cultural Institutes, publishing companies, libraries, film festivals and
museums use CPL’s resources.
The Center’s online monthly, Printed Matter, features essays and interviews on topics that
have limited circulation in English language.
Listings and reviews of CPL’s programs appear regularly in publications including The
New York Times, The New Yorker, Time Out New York, The Forward, The Jewish Week,
America Oggi, I-Italy, and in the Italian press.
The Center operates under the auspices of the Consulate General of Italy in collaboration
with the Italian Association for Jewish Studies and the Union of the Italian Jewish
Communities. It partners with research institutions in Italy, Israel and the US.
