“From the Desk of Father Jonathan”
Many critics of the Catholic Church through the ages
have said that we should sell all of our churches and art
and give the money to the poor.
Last week Pope Francis showed us another way--in my
opinion, a better way--to serve the poor. He invited the
homeless men and women from the city of Rime to
visit the Vatican Museums and the Vatican Gardens.
Rather than sell these treasures of humanity to private
collectors where most people would never be able to
see them, Pope Francis is showing us that the best way
to help the poor is to allow them the
OPPORTUNITIES to grow as people, in this case,
by encountering the beauty of art.
What a marvelous example for our parish!! As we seek
new ways to help our parishioners and community at
large, especially the most needy, let's have as a goal the
creation of opportunities for everyone to reach their
potential....spiritually, mentally, materially.
I hope you are able to read the letter I have written to
the parish for Easter about our mission and goals for
the rest of 2015. You can find a copy at the back of the
church and on our website. I would love to hear your
reaction and other ideas. Feel free to write me a note
and drop it off at the Parish Center, call and leave me a
voice mail, or send me an email at
[email protected]
Happy Easter!

CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL
RIFLESSIONI SULLA PAROLA DI DIO
Vangelo della Domenica: Giovanni 20: 1-9
REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD
Sunday Gospel: John 20: 1-9
Place 1 cup of pecans in a zippered plastic bag and let
children break them into pieces with a wooden spoon.
Explain that Jesus was arrested and was beaten by
Roman soldiers. Let each child smell the vinegar and
pour 1 teaspoon into a mixing bowl. Explain that Jesus
was thirsty on the cross and was given vinegar to drink.
Add 3 egg whites, representing life, to the vinegar.
Explain that Jesus gave his life to give us life. Sprinkle
salt into each child’s hand. Let them taste it and put a
pinch into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty
tears shed by Jesus’ disciples, and the bitterness of our
own sins. Add 1 cup of sugar. Explain that the sweetest
part of the story is that Jesus died because he loves us.
He wants us to know this and how to belong to him.
Beat with a mixer on high speed until stiff peaks are
formed. Explain that the color white represents our
purity when God forgives our sins. Fold in the nuts.
Drop by teaspoons onto a cookie sheet covered in waxed
paper. Explain that each mound represents the rocky
tomb where Jesus’ body was laid. Put the cookie sheet in
a 300° F oven, close the door and turn the oven off! Give
each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door.
Explain that Jesus’ tomb was sealed. Go to bed! Explain
that they may feel sad leaving the cookies in the oven
overnight, just as Jesus’ disciples were miserable when
the tomb was sealed.
On Easter day, open the oven and give everyone a
cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The
cookies are hollow! On the first Easter Jesus’ followers
were amazed to find the tomb open and empty!
Jesus is alive!
niente e nessuno potrebbe spezzare. È possibile? Io
HAPPY EASTER!!

Christ is risen!
Dale a
sellada. ¡Váyanse a dormir!
