Press release 16.5.2014 69.Settimane Musicali di Ascona under the sign of Beethoven, Brahms and Shostakovich From 28th August to 10th October 15 appointments of absolute prestige following the connection between Brahms, Beethoven, Shostakovich. Some of the great names on this year’s billboard: the pianists Krystian Zimerman, Till Fellner and Elisabeth Leonskaja, the violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann and orchestras of the calibre of the Budapest Festival Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic directed by Charles Dutoit. Amongst the novelties, we find the screening of a film accompanied by the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana, on the opening day of the International Film Festival Locarno. One of the essential events of the Tessiner musical summer, the “Settimane Musicali di Ascona” has been hosting since 1946 the best solo artists, the biggest orchestras and internationally renowned directors. The 2014 festival, with Chairman Prof. Dino Invernizzi and artistic Director (for the second year running) Francesco Piemontesi, will once again confirm its high standards, as during the past editions. Whilst during his first year as artistic director, Piemontesi introduced a totally revisited program and pursued some unusual (for the Ascona festival) musical paths, the 69th Edition - which will be held from the 28th August until the 10th October - follows the will to unite innovation and tradition. The program will have as leading thread the complete Brahms Symphonies on one side, and – on the other - two fundamental periods in the history of music: the Beethoven Concerts for piano and the Instrumental Concerts by Shostakovich, Russian composer, one of the greatest musicians of the XX century. The 2015 Edition will complete this concept. As illustrated by Piemontesi, “the artistic choices highlight the musical periods/cycles which have had a great artistic and historical impact. The Concerts by Beethoven played a fundamental part in the future of young composers of the time. The piano writing of Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and many other great composers would never have existed without Beethoven’s influcence. The same is to be said about Brahms’s Symphonies, ground stones of symphonic literature, which were then analysed and taken as examples even by musicians who were following a completely different musical path, not the classical one, such as Arnold Schönberg. The Concerts by Shostakovich are amongst the musical masterpieces of the 1900. They to owe their origin to the influence of Beethoven and Brahms, presenting a myriad of contrasting characters, from sarcasm to major desolation, but in the same time following a strong line and formal architecture. Also in these cases, the impact of compositions by Shostakovich on the past century’s music history was fundamental. The 2014 edition will offer mostly symphonic concerts, chamber music and recitals. Amongst the great solo artists the festival is honoured to greet - in the suggestive sceneries of the churches of Collegio Papio in Ascona and San Francesco in Locarno - particular mention goes to the pianists th Krystian Zimerman (on the 16 September with the Polish Radio Orchestra), Elisabeth Leonskaja th (on the 26 September with the Symphonic Orchestra of Basel) and Till Fellner (in a recital rd dedicated to Mozart, Bach, Haydn and Schuman, on the 3 of October). Returning to Ascona, we find the violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann, which will perform twice: as a duo with his colleague st and pianist Christian Zacharis on September the 1 and with the NDR Radiophilharmonie th directed by Dima Slobodeniouk on September the 9 . Amongst the first class orchestras and formations, regulars at the most important festivals around the world, we recommend also the Budapest Festival Orchestra directed by maestro Ivan Fischer th (on the 28 September with a program dedicated entirely to Brahms), the Camerata Salzburg under th the direction of Heinrich Schiff with one of the most requested violinists, Isabelle van Keulen (8 th September) and of course the Royal Philarmonic Orchestra directed by Charles Dutoit (6 September in San Francesco), with Francesco Piemontesi on piano. As well as these highlights, this year’s festival will also offer two appointments of the Début series, a scene specially dedicated to young talents that are to become tomorrow’s classical stars. Event held th in the Sala Sopracenerina in Locarno with the following program: 27 September the French pianist, th winner of the Clara Haskil Competition, Adam Laloum and on the 4 October the Hungarian quartet Kélemen. As during the past editions, the festival will count on a strong collaboration with the Coro della nd Radiotelevisione svizzera and the Barocchisti directed by Diego Fasolis (22 September) as well as with the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana to whom three appointments will be dedicated th this year, including the festival’s closure concert (on the 10 October with maestro Mario Venzago and the young and multi-award-winning French cellist Jean Guhien Queyras) and the event on th th August 6 , which will act as preview of these 69 Settimane Musicali and as opening event of the th 67 Locarno Film Festival. Thanks to the support of the Ente Regionale per lo Sviluppo Locarnese e Vallemaggia, Settimane Musicali and the Locarno Film Festival will co-operate in the screening of a film accompanied by the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana directed by Philippe Béran.
