Nowadays Sonia Prina is worldwide recognised as one of the leading contralto
of her generation.
She studied at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan where she earned
degrees in trumpet and voice. In 1996 she was admitted to the Teatro alla Scala’s
vocal Academy for young singers and by 1997 she had begun performing operas with
a special interest in Baroque repertoire.
Her rare contralto voice quickly became noticed on the international lyric
scene. She received prestigious prizes among them we mention the Italian prize of
critic “Abbiati” in 2006 and the “Tiberini d’Oro” in 2014 in both cases as best singer of the year!
Highlights of her career include: title role of Handel’s Rinaldo at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, at the Zurich Opera and at the
Glyndebourne Festival; title role in Mozart’s Ascanio in Alba at the Salzburg Festival; Clarice in Rossini’s La Pietra di
Paragone at Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris; title role of Handel’s Orlando at the Sidney Opera House; title role of Tamerlano at
the Munich Staatsoper.
She is regularly invited in some of the most prestigious theaters and festivals such as: La Scala in Milan, Théâtre des Champs
Elysées and Opera de Paris, Teatro Real of Madrid and Teatro Liceu in Barcellona, Sydney Opera, Barbican in London, Lyric
opera of Chicago and San Francisco Opera, Munich Staatsoper, Salzburg Festival and Aix en Province Festival, Zurich Opera
etc.. collaborating with conductors like: Rinaldo Alessandrini, Giovanni Antonini, Harry Bicket, Fabio Biondi, Ivor Bolton, Alan
Curtis, William Christie, Ottavio Dantone, Diego Fasolis, Emmanuelle Haim, Christopher Hogwood, René Jacobs, Paul
McCreesh, Marc Minkowski, Jean Christophe Spinosì, Jordi Savall, Patrick Summers… and directors such as: Robert Carsen
(Rinaldo in Glyndebourne and Alcina in Paris), David McVicar (Orlando in Paris and Giulio Cesare in Lille), Pier Luigi Pizzi
(Orfeo in Madrid), John Copley (Ariodante in San Francisco), David Alden (Alcina in Madrid)...
Sonia Prina is particularly fond of Handel work and has performed on these operas: title roles of Giulio Cesare and title
role of Orlando in Paris; title role of Amadigi in Naples; title-role of Rinaldo in Zurich, Scala and Glyndebourne, title role of
Silla in Rome, title role of Tamerlano in Munich; Bradamante in Alcina in Paris; Polinesso in Ariodante in Barcelona and in
San Francisco; Bertarido in Rodelinda in London and Vienna; Goffredo in Rinaldo at the Lyric Opera of Chicago; Amastre in
Serse in San Francisco and Huston.

Some of her very recent engagements include: Title-role of Gluck’s Ezio in Frankfurt Oper; Aci, Galatea e Polifemo with
René Jacobs in Bruxelles; Title-role in Handel’s Giulio Cesare and title-role in Handel’s Orlando at the Dresden Semperoper;
Ariodante (Polinesso) in Aix en Provence’s festival; Haendel’s Resurrezione with Emmanuelle Haïm and Berliner
Philarmoniker.
In the traditional operatic repertoire she debuted at only 23 years old, in Teatro alla Scala as Rosina in Barbiere di
Siviglia with R. Chailly and Juan Diego Florez as Almaviva; more recently she sang Smeton in Anna Bolena at Teatro Liceu in
Barcelona with Editha Gruberova and Elina Garanca; Isabella in Italiana in Algeri in Teatro Regio in Torino and Clarice in La
Pietra del Paragone in Paris Théâtre du Châtelet and recently La Maman, La Tasse chinoise, La Libellule nell’Enfant et les
Sortileges in Palermo and Naples.
Other noteworthy performances have been in Monteverdi operas in the role of Ottone in L’Incoronazione di Poppea
with Rinaldo Alessandrini and Penelope in Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria with Ottavio Dantone and Messaggera and Speranza in
Orfeo with William Christie in Madrid Teatro Real.
Under the baton of Jordi Savall she sang in Vivaldi’s Farnace in Madrid staged by Emilio Sagi and in La Senna
Festeggiante in Bordeaux.
She sang Vivaldi’s Magnificat in Vatican under the baton of Zhang Xian for S.S. Pope Benedict XVI and the president of Italian
Republic Giorgio Napolitano.
She performs in recitals all over Europe, South America and Japan, with important baroque orchestras such as, Venice
Baroque Orchestra, Il Giardino Armonico, Accademia Bizantina, Le Concert d’Astrée, Europa Galante, Kammerorchester
Basel, Ensemble Matheus etc.
She will be “artist in residence” at the prestigious Wigmore Hall in London where she will give several recitals during 2017
season.
Her most important recordings include: Handel’s Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno and La Resurrezione
(Virgin); Vivaldi’s Senna festeggiante and L’Olimpiade (Naïve); Monteverdi’s Orfeo (Erato); Handel’s Lotario (DHM)
and Rodelinda (Deutsche Grammophon); title role of Gluck’s Ezio and Handel’s Ezio (Erato).
Among her dvd we cite title role of Ascanio in Alba (Deutsche Grammophon); La Pietra di Paragone (Naïve) and
recently released: title-role of Handel’s Rinaldo (DVD Opus Arte); title role of Vivaldi’s Ottone in Villa with Il Giardino
Armonico for Naïve Vivaldi Edition. We also mention a solo album Vivaldi’s Arie Ritrovate with Accademia Bizantina for
Naïve and a special project around Handel’s Lucrezia.
