Baritone
Born in Taranto, Lucio Gallo graduated at the ‘Giuseppe Verdi’ Conservatory of Turin with Elio Battaglia. He is a
regular guest of the world’s leading opera houses and concert halls including New York MET, San Francisco
Opera, Wiener Staatsoper, Konzerthaus and Musikverein in Wien, London ROH Covent Garden, Staatsoper,
Philharmonic Orchestra and Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Salzburg Festival, Teatro alla Scala, Hamburgische
Staatsoper, Bayerische Staatsoper, Opernhaus in Zürich, Monnaie in Bruxelles, Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro,
Teatro Regio di Torino, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Teatro
Comunale di Bologna, just to name a few.
He worked with important conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Chailly, MyungWhun Chung, Colin Davis, John Eliot Gardiner, Daniele Gatti, Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Bernard Haitink, Nikolaus
Harnoncourt, Vladimir Jurowski, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Seiji Ozawa, Antonio Pappano, Wolfgang
Sawallisch, Jeffrey Tate, with a wide repertory including mozartian roles (Guglielmo, Figaro, Conte di Almaviva,
Don Giovanni, Leporello), rossinian roles (Figaro, Dandini, Lord Sidney, Don Alvaro, Batone), verdian roles
(Paolo Albiani, Macbeth, Jago, Ford, Don Carlo in Ernani), as well as wagnerian roles (Klingsor, Der Hollaender,
Telramund). His repertory also includes Belcore (L’elisir d’amore), Malatesta (Don Pasquale), Marcello (La
Bohème), Sharpless (Madama Butterfly), Escamillo (Carmen), Il prigioniero (Il prigioniero), Sebastiano (Tiefland),
Don Pizarro (Fidelio), Jack Rance (La fanciulla del west), Scarpia (Tosca) and Wozzeck (Wozzeck).
He opened the 2015/16 season performing as Scarpia in Tosca at Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, followed by
La Wally (Gellner) at Opéra de Montecarlo, Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi (title role) and Il Tabarro (Michele) at
London ROH Covent Garden.
Among his future plans are Macbeth (title role) in Karlsruhe and at New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, Tosca
(Scarpia) at Deutsche Oper in Berlin and at Opera Australia in Melbourne, Nabucco in Palma de Mallorca and
Don Pasquale in Duesseldorf.
Recent engagements have included Gianni Schicchi (title role), Il Tabarro (Michele) and Tosca (Scarpia) at ROH
Covent Garden in London, Suite A from Dallapiccola’s Ulisse with Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala under the
baton of Daniel Harding, Il tabarro (Michele), Cavalleria Rusticana (Alfio) and Falstaff (title role) with the
Sveriges Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Daniel Harding, L’elisir d’amore, Andrea Chénier, Tosca,
Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci at Opernhaus in Zurich, Otello at La Fenice in Venice and at Deutsche Oper
in Berlino, Un ballo in maschera (role debut as Renato) at Chorégies d'Orange, Amica at Opéra de Montecarlo,
Nabucco (title role) at New National Theatre in Tokyo, Cavalleria Rusticana (Alfio) at Opera in Florence, Gianni
Schicchi (title role) at Teatro Real de Madrid, Parsifal (Klingsor) at Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Andrea Chénier
(Gerard) at Seoul Arts Center, Simon Boccanegra (title role) in Frankfurt.
The Lieder repertory also takes a special place in the career of Lucio Gallo, who regularly sings it in world’s
leading concert halls. He teaches singing at the Accedemia Musicale Pescarese and he held improvers course at the
Scuola Superiore “Hugo Wolf” directed by Maestro Elio Battaglia.
He recorded for Deutsche Grammophon, Sony, Decca and Fonit Cetra (Warner).
