tutte le valigie di Jim Jarmusch all Jim Jarmusch's suitcases Valigia numero uno. Allie. Suitcase number one. Allie. From the roof of a building, it looks like he wants to commit suicide. Fortunately, at the port, he meets a young Frenchman newly arrived in New York, who invites him to travel: “Paris will be your Babel”. JJ was 20 years old when he left Akron, Ohio, with a population of 200,000, to go to study in Paris. Every day he goes to the theatre, and discovers Rohmer, Ozu, and cinema. Valigia numero due. Eva. I put a spell on you, avverte Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Suitcase number two. Eva. She arrives from Hungary and has to spend a few days at her cousin Willie’s. I put a spell on you, warns Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. She will be missed, he will get a car and go and find her. Meeting another, allowing them to invade you, to alter your stasis. Without the surprise of unexpected encounters with those coming from afar, JJ would not have told the relationship as only he knows how. The details are important, the things that remain unsaid, an absent expression which reveals a sadness that the other is gone. Valigia numero tre. Jun e Mitsuko. È l'unico modo per Suitcase number three. Jun and Mitsuko. Far from Yokohama, they arrive in Memphis with the myth of Elvis in their heads. While everything seems to fall apart, they make love. Then, at the Arcade Hotel, a gunshot. “Don’t worry, we’re in America.” Japanese, Scandinavian or Italian, the best way to see America is as a foreigner, and perhaps only in passing. It is the only way to be able to love a amare una leggenda pur riconoscendone le crepe nel soffitto. Valigie del mestiere. Ghost Dog e William Blake. Lone Man. Ancora oggi è un faro per chi fa cinema indipendente – il vero indipendente, legend while recognising the cracks in the ceiling. Suitcases of the trade. Ghost Dog and William Blake. If you are already dead, the suitcase is of no use to you. William Blake doesn’t know this yet, but he will find it out soon. He cut across the West on a wagon where they shot on wild boars from the windows, because we are in America. He clings to the suitcase, trying to defend himself. Nobody will reveal the truth to him. Then, if you already know your destiny, you can do anything. Ghost Dog has the tools of the trade in his suitcase. He can start locked cars, give orders to pigeons, and silently kill anyone who disturbs his boss’s serenity. Every place we go is marked on our skin. The people we know, the cities we see: we are all that which we carry with us. JJ often told stories about the actors he would like to work with, because he dreams that each of them can transfer that which they have seen, loved and heard into the films. The suitcase of the womanising (possible) father. Winston noticed him. A half empty suitcase, travelling from state to state, from house to house, from ex-lover to ex-lover. Maybe you’ve had a disaster, Don. Maybe you have had a lucky escape. If you hadn’t started looking, would you ever have known whether you really have a child or not? The infinite suitcase. Lone Man. What does the killer carry in his suitcase? The elegant clothes in which he meditates, silently, on the thousands of signs which will lead to nothing. The mystery at its apex: the only way forward is to overcome the limits of control and trust. To go, to move, to travel. Nobody controls JJ. In 30 years he has fought to remain independent litterally: he works with who he wants to, he chooses the times and the terms without any commercial influence. He has forbidden the dubbing of nearly all of his films, films which were released throughout the world. Today he is still a beacon for independent film-makers – the truly independent, not the trend-following Jim Jarmusch 99 non il praticantato modaiolo che riempie le bocche di certi festival, e che poi finisce regolarmente inglobato nel sistema. Vincenzo Rossini kind that fills certain festivals, and then ends up incorporated into the system. In fifteen years many suitcases have passed. Immature talents have become acclaimed authors, people who have resisted classification, boys with a passion for cinema who have traded sleep for the excitement of a crowded film-screening. Milano Film Festival has grown thanks to a sense of urgency: pushing the boundaries of the visible, travelling and heading off to discover images that would otherwise be inaccessible. JJ explicitly fills his films with the images that have struck him. His is an ethic of inspiration, not of empty citation. In his suitcase are Fuller and Ray, Wenders and Lang, Kaurismaki and Kaurismaki, Rohmer and Tavernier, Antonioni and Bresson, Ozu and Mizoguchi, Peckinpah and Tonino Valerii, Kafka and Faulkner, Hagakure, Les fleurs du mal, and Une Saison en Enfer. And there is still plenty of room, and we are sure that he will find it. The tribute is not an intellectual display of knowledge, but an offering of love. And here are the inscriptions, quotes and dedications to prove it. 30 years since the radical debut of Permanent Vacation, the young film-makers who do not want to travel in the business class of cinema still follow his example: they declare their love for the authors of the past; they look for the reality of the human soul in the details, in the unspoken, in the wait between events; they do not fear slowness, deviation, or rule-breaking. JJ is not a bard. He doesn’t make films to lead the way – although his films have done just that. But it is a certainty, a guarantee that we can live for another kind of cinema. We can even start to think that the other cinema is other. Perhaps while involving friends and people we hold in high esteem. Perhaps with a bit of music. And even those who have been through here swear that they have brought something in their suitcase. Film in tre movimenti. In The New World, il giocatore d'azzardo Willie deve ospitare per qualche giorno la cugina Eva, appena arrivata dall'Ungheria. A film in three movements. In The New World, the gambler Willie has to put up his cousin Eva, who has just arrived from Hungary, for a few days. Against the idea at first, the man gets used to the girl’s presence, and is sorry when she leaves for Cleveland. In One Year Later, Willie and his friend Eddie use a large sum of money won gambling to go and see Eva in Cleveland. When they get there, they are bored and decide to go back to New York. In Paradise, the two go back to pick up Eva and make their way towards Florida. When they lose all their money gambling, their paths divide, but an unexpected stroke of good luck will change their directions. Stranger than Paradise is the film-symbol of independent American cinema. Until its appearance, the low-budget products of the underground culture had a “accursed” and “artistic” aura that kept them away from the public. Critical recognition – winning the Caméra d'Or at Cannes and the Golden Leopard in Locarno in 1984 – and the efficacy of the style, contemplative but decipherable, rich in unusual situations which produce a sincere sense of humour, not only brought JJ and the film to the general public, but marked out a direction that has never been abandoned by the cinema far from industrial logics. It is a snapshot of the USA from the point of view of those who come and those who go, those who feel out of place but do not know how to change the situation, the favourite subjects of Jarmusch, the “rootless”. Shot in real locations and with non-professional actors, it is the development of a first fragment, entitled The New World, made thanks to Wim Wenders, who gave JJ the film left over from the shooting of The State of Things. A very precious gift indeed. A tourist that's on a... permanent vacation. Aloysius Parker, called Allie, devoured by indolence and dissatisfaction, wanders around a New York of desolation, where echoes of constant explosions threaten an imminent end. He has the “gift” of being able to relate with the outsiders of society. Meeting a French traveller will give him the courage to leave the Big Apple and set off for Paris. JJ makes his début with a film rich in autobiographical references and already pervaded by attention for the “misfits” who will populate his cinema. The gaze is contemplative, the movements are linked to precise meanings and the influence of European authors is clear. Made thanks to the help of friends and artists of New York’s underground scene – like John Lurie and the future director Tom DiCillo, the film was presented at the European festivals of Rotterdam and Mannheim. down by law USA / Germany / 1986 / 35mm / 107’ produzione / production Island Pictures produttore / producer Alan Kleinberg sceneggiatura / screenplay Jim Jarmusch montaggio / editing Melody London fotografia / cinematography Robby Müller sound editor Frank Kern musica / music John Lurie cast Tom Waits, John Lurie, Roberto Benigni, Nicoletta Braschi, Ellen Barkin, Billie Neal, Rockets Redglare, Vernel Bagneris distribuzione / distribution Mediafilm sara.gerolami@mediafilm.it it is a sad and beautiful world. Zack is an out of work dj who is overcome by dejection, Jack is a shallow pimp. Framed, they end up in jail in New Orleans. The arrival of Bob, an Italian tourist accused of murder, will change their fates, reawakening in them the desire to move, dream and live. With his third film, JJ becomes an international case. He develops the story starting from the actors and putting on to film his friendships with Waits, Lurie and Benigni. As in On the Road by Kerouac – and Lurie’s character is called Jack – what counts is the journey, the need to move and to go. Did JJ know where he would arrive? We can’t say for sure, but the result is one of his best works, loved by the worldwide public and critics and a cult film of the American cinema of the 1980s. Probably. This is America. At the same time, in five cities very far apart from one another, a character takes a taxi and talks to the driver. The encounter/conflict between two opposing worlds produces unforeseeable reactions. After the three stories of Mystery Train, JJ produces a “global” film, from Los Angeles to Helsinki via New York, Paris and Rome, significant cities for his artistic training and world which he frames as a “foreigner”, as he usually does with this characters. Made with production difficulties, Night on Earth conceals, behind the sense of humour of some sketches such as the one with Roberto Benigni and Paolo Bonacelli – a reflection on solitude and on prejudices, veined here and there with some bitterness (as in the episode with Gena Rowlands, subtly critical of the Hollywood system). William Blake, a naïve accountant, crosses the United States to go to a new job. When he arrives in the West, he finds out that his job has disappeared and he is alone in a hostile reality. Accused of a murder he did not commit, he ends up with a price on his head. Practically speaking, he is a dead man. A half-breed Indian, passionate about poetry and convinced that the “stupid white man” is in some way the soul of the great poet, will help him turn into a man who gently goes to meet his fate. Becoming aware of the certainty of death, William Blake cuts off the moorings of his existence. The canoe that takes him into the open sea in the ending, as in Lightning over Water by Wenders, is the goal of the senses, the end of pain. Once again, it is friendship with a character of opposing origins and habits - here the Indian Nobody - in whom JJ places his paradoxical faith “outside the system” of men that provides the key to enter the other dimension. Jarmusch takes the conventions of the Western, turns them upside down and empties them of every narrative necessity. He reworks it artistically and includes the evocative (and ironic) presence of Robert Mitchum in one of his last appearances. Faithful to his total independence, he also turns the rules of using the soundtrack upside-down, convincing Neil Young to record the accompaniment when the film was finished. The Canadian’s spectral electric guitar becomes the echo of an elegy for the Western. Complementing the collaboration leading to the soundtrack of Dead Man, JJ made a documentary on Crazy Horse, the band that historically accompanied Neil Young in the most electric part of his career. “Proudly shot in Super8”, as the credits say, it is a blurry mix of formats and sounds marked by the distorted and dilated flavour of Young’s own rock music. Without any form of idolatry, JJ treats him like one of the members of the band, concentrating - thanks to interviews in a very familiar tone - on the friendship and esteem between the members and on the “idle time” when on tour. ten minutes older: the trumpet (ep. int. trailer night) Spain / UK / Germany / Finland / China / 2002 / 35mm / 92’ Jim Jarmusch, Kaige Chen, Vìctor Erice, Werner Herzog, Aki Kaurismäki, Spike Lee, Wim Wenders produzione / production Matador Pictures produttore / producer Nicolas McClintock sceneggiatura / screenplay Jim Jarmusch montaggio / editing Jim Jarmusch fotografia / cinematography Jim Jarmusch cast Chloë Sévigny distribuzione / distribution Road Pictures [email protected] Nel 2002 il produttore Nicolas McClintock chiede a 15 autori di fama mondiale di realizzare un corto sul concetto di “tempo”, della durata di 10 minuti. A letter written in red ink on pink card arouses Don Johnston from his apathy. He is a hardened middle-aged ladies’ man and has just been dumped by his girlfriend. The man is alleged to have had a child by the writer of the letter who does not sign it. His neighbour Winston convinces him to set off and find his former mistresses to discover the truth. The “mystery of the letter” which characterizes the plot, once again is a pretext to investigate the importance of going to going, of discovering oneself given by movement, of questioning the certainties which in, post 9/11 America, are full of metaphorical meanings. Awarded the Jury’s prize, Broken Flowers is also the first film by JJ full of female characters who, together with the grandiose impassibility of Bill Murray, ensure a gentle sense of humour. A black killer travels through Spain on an unknown job. His stay is marked by actions which are repeated, always the same and always obscure, and meetings with strange figures - like a provocative Spanish woman who is always nude or an icy blonde – who set forth deep theories on life and on the cinema) and then give the man a box of matches from which he takes out a note with a code and which he swallows. The more his wandering continues, the closer the man gets to the root of the crime. JJ takes his work on the abstraction of time and on the meaning of actions to the extreme. All the elements which in the cinema (and in life) take stories forward are reversed: the actions are repeated with an anti-logic of their own (which is different from saying without any logic) and, although it is impossible to find a meaning, the killer is confident and almost calm. The Limits of Control have to be crossed to reach the truth, but the opposite could also be true. No, The Limits of Control cannot be accessed trying to explain the narrative thread. It has to be lived as a overwhelming and original experience for those who have their heart and mind in the right frame. To reach this state similar to karma – which recalls the paradoxical serenity with which Ghost Dog and Dead Man go towards death – JJ makes his stylistic features even more extreme: a space-rock soundtrack, the extraordinary photography by Christopher Doyle (who regularly works with Wong Kar-wai) and the presence of destabilizing sets, where contrasting elements interpenetrate all the time, making it impossible to separate the entrance and exit of spaces, the start and the end. The film sparked off harsh discussions amongst critics. As Nigel Andrews, the critic of the Financial Times, maintained, “you have to choose whether to be on one side or the other. Go and see it and decide yourselves. If it is rubbish without a story designed to inflame the pages of the papers. Or whether it is the future of the cinema and Jarmusch has got there before us.” Jim Jarmusch 115 video sightsee M.C.!
