Galleria Marie-Laure Fleisch is pleased to present Not I, the first solo show in Rome of the New York-based artist Ofri
Cnaani. The title is inspired by the monologue of the same name written by Samuel Beckett in 1972; a short, dramatic
and uncontrollable torrent of words hovering between pain and pleasure, sensuality and transcendence, between the
inner and outer self.
“She was not suffering … imagine! … not suffering! … indeed could not remember … off-hand … when she had suffered
less … unless of course she was … meant to be suffering … ha! … thought to be suffering… just as the odd time … in
her life … when clearly intended to be having pleasure.” (Beckett, Not I, 1973).
Indeed, ecstasy is the focus of Ofri Cnaani's artistic research; her idea is to go beyond one’s own body to enter into a
state of beatitude and estrangement. By assembling an anthology of images and texts from different cultures and social
settings, Cnaani brings together stories of extracorporeal experiences of historical personages from different social
groups, places and varying between the mystical, sexual, psychoanalytical or artistic.
On show is an environmental installation composed of home-made projectors and light machines which create a world of
shadows and bizarrely-moving elements in a magically proto-mechanical atmosphere. In contrast to classical cinema,
the sculptural elements of the installation never try to hide the mechanics used to produce the images. Indeed, she gives
the same importance to the projector as to the projected images in an attempt to explore the tension between reality,
illusion and the process of showing. With allusions to art history and early cinema, the images present situations which
hover between the playful and the violent while highlighting the underlying relationship between power and the gender
through history up to the contemporary period.
A performance will be held on the inaugural evening which will be an integral part of the exhibition. Ofri Cnaani has
invited women from different professional backgrounds to visit the exhibition, to give their own impressions of the
installation and to tell their personal experiences of ecstasy and its relevance in contemporary society. Always looking
for new ways to communicate to the public, Cnaani uses the “guided tour” as her starting point to create dialogue, taking
advantage of a social event such as an opening to stimulate debate and cultural exchange. The different interpretations
of the work told through the viewers’ own words generate a rather discordant narrative which hovers between fiction and
reality.
In a world in which more and more people feel disinherited from life and are unable to feel emotions, ecstasy is a means
to live an all-encompassing experience which is both mental and physical at the same time. Not I therefore aims to
create the conditions for an interactive journey which obliges the participant to reflect on how a high emotional level can
be reached in today's society.
Ofri Cnaani (Israel,1975) lives and works in New York, where she teaches at the School of Visual Arts and at the International Center of
Photography (ICP). She has exhibited and presented her performance works in various institutions: Metropolitan Museum of Art, PS1 / MoMA, New
York; BMW Guggenheim Lab, New York; The Fisher Museum of Art, Los Angeles; Twister, Network of Contemporary Art Museums, Lombardy,
Italy; Kunsthalle Galapagos, New York; Andrea Meislin Gallery, New York; Braverman Gallery, Tel Aviv; Galleria Pack, Milan; Haifa Museum of Art,
Israel; Herzlyia Museum of Art, Israel. Her joint exhibitions include: Moscow Biennial; The Kitchen, New York; Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York;

La Galleria Marie-Laure Fleisch è lieta di annunciare Not I, prima mostra personale a Roma dell’artista newyorkese Ofri
Cnaani. Il titolo si riferisce all’omonimo monologo di Samuel Beckett del 1972, un breve discorso drammatico, rotto, un
torrente incontrollabile di parole in bilico tra dolore e piacere, carnalità e trascendenza, sul sé e il fuori da sé.

L’estasi è infatti l’oggetto di ricerca di Ofri Cnaani, intesa come idea dell’uscire dal proprio corpo per entrare in uno stato
di beatitudine e straniamento. Mettendo insieme un’antologia di immagini e testi, provenienti da culture di diverse
estrazioni sociali, Cnaani raccoglie storie di individui storici, di gruppi di appartenenza, luoghi e ambientazioni di viaggi
esperienziali fuori dal proprio corpo, siano essi episodi mistici, sessuali, psicoanalitici o artistici.
In mostra un’installazione ambientale composta da artigianali proiettori e macchine luminose che creano un mondo di
ombre e di bizzarri elementi mobili, in un’atmosfera protomeccanica magica. A dispetto della cinematografia più classica,
la struttura scultorea dell’installazione non tenta in alcun momento di nascondere i mezzi di produzione, dando la stessa
importanza al proiettore quanto all’immagine proiettata nel tentativo di esplorare la tensione tra realtà, illusione e i
meccanismi del mostrare. Con allusioni alla storia dell'arte e al cinema delle origini, le immagini presentano situazioni
che oscillano tra il giocoso e il violento, rimandando ai rapporti di potere e ai ruoli di genere nella storia e nella società
odierna.
Parte integrante del lavoro presentato in galleria sarà una performance la sera dell’inaugurazione. Ofri Cnaani ha
invitato alcune donne di professioni differenti a visitare la mostra e a raccontare la visione che ne hanno della stessa
nonché la propria esperienza in relazione all’estasi e alla sua rilevanza nella società contemporanea. Sempre alla
ricerca di nuovi strumenti didattici, Cnaani utilizza la “visita guidata” come mezzo per dare inizio al dialogo, sfruttando
altresì un evento sociale come l’inaugurazione per alimentare dibattiti e scambi culturali. Le diverse letture dell’opera con
l’utilizzo di terminologie proprie di ciascuna professionalità genereranno una narrazione a tratti dissonante, a metà tra
finzione e realtà.
In un mondo in cui sempre più persone si sentono distanti dalla vita e incapaci di provare emozioni, l’estasi si pone
quale metodo per provare un’esperienza del mondo totalizzante, mentale e fisica allo stesso tempo. Not I ha dunque
l’ambizione di creare le condizioni per un viaggio interattivo che ci porti a riflettere su come sia possibile raggiungere un
alto livello emozionale nella società odierna.
