The English Speaking Business Community
In this latest edition of Focus we have chosen to dedicate a lot more space to the life of the
Chamber, with photographs of events and sections devoted to some of the important partnerships
that we have established.
This does not take away our usual focus on the regions, in fact two on this occasion: the activities
of the Chamber in both Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia are enthusiastically described by the
Honorary Regional Secretaries who oversee them, Andrew Fattorini and John Dodds. The
activities of the Tax & Legal Chapter have been significantly expanded through the efforts of our
members operating in the professional services sector, covering a vast range of subject-matter.
Let’s hope we have once again put together a magazine which is at the same time interesting,
creative, current and never boring.

These first months of 2009 have
seen the arrival of a new Secretary
General. Simona Frignani has sought
to give a new boost to the Chamber,
building on the changes and
successes implemented and achieved
by her predecessor with the aim of
developing them further.
The tradition of hosting top level
(and entertaining!) speakers at every
Business Lunch has continued, as
has promoting interaction between
members through aperitivi and trendy
parties. At the same time the traditions
of pub meetings and social events
have been revived.
The regions are of great importance
too, with a resumption of events
and a revival of interest having been
witnessed. The new look and content
of the regions section of the website
seek to highlight their importance
and at the same time to encourage
new and more frequent activities
involving members who may be
located away from the main centres
of activities of the Chamber.

The British Chamber of Commerce for Italy
The BCCI Team
The BCCI is a private, non profit making entity that works
closely with the British Consulate General in Milan and with
the British Embassy in Rome, as well as with the diplomatic
posts in Naples, Florence and Venice.
It represents in Italy the interests of
the Confederation of British Industries
and the British Standards Institute. It
also maintains ties in Great Britain
with the Department of Trade and
Industry, with the Association of
British Chambers of Commerce and –
throughout Europe – with COBCOE,
the Council of British Chambers of
Commerce in Continental Europe.
The BCCI was founded in 1904 in
Genoa but today its headquarters are
in Milan. Regional branches of the
Chamber are operative throughout
Italy and there is also a Secretary in
London. The Chamber has about 400
Members, for the most part Italian
and British companies, including
branches of British businesses
operating in Italy, Italian companies
that have trade relations with the
United Kingdom, service providers
and professional consultants.
We believe that the Chamber’s
fundamental mission is to serve our
Members well, remembering at all
times that, besides being Members,
they are our main source of financial
support. We anticipate their needs
and do our utmost to satisfy them,
by providing a service of excellent
quality and value.

learning needs.
The BCCI has various communication tools and publications

examinations continue to expand both in
terms of the number and variety of users

examinations offered.
Currently the basic IPEC examinations
are offered at three of the levels
established by the Council of Europe:
Entry (Threshold B1 Level), Executive
(Vantage B2 Level), and Excellence
(Effective Proficiency C1 level), while
the Legal English Module which was
developed in collaboration with Milan’s

of Commerce for Italy was published
to celebrate the Chamber’s centenary
in 2004. This publication covers 100
fascinating years of the evolving
business relationship between the
two world wars, and taking us from
the Chamber’s foundation in 1904 in
Genoa to the present day.

is the independent, nonprofit making organisation

Thanks to its activities and the
commitment it dedicates to small and
medium-size businesses, it is recognized
to all intents and purposes as a
Chamber of Commerce by the Italian
Ministry for Industry (Ministero delle
Attività Produttive) and is registered
with CAMERE DI COMMERCIO ITALO
ESTERE O ESTERE IN ITALIA at
Unioncamere under registration n.33 of
5th February 2003.
The Indian Chamber of Commerce
in Italy has its main operational
office at Via Moncalvo 80, Milan, and
correspondent offices in Mumbai and
New Delhi, India. Over the coming
months the aim is to open new offices
in collaboration with major business
associations in the regions of Italy and
other cities in India.
ICCI operates with an active and flexible
structure that enables it to provide
small and medium-size businesses with
a wide range of integrated services
rapidly and effectively. Its main task is
to solve the problems that businesses
face when entering foreign markets,
in particular Italian firms going to
India and Indian firms entering Italy.
All this is supported by a network of
professionals specialized in different
areas of international trade.
In addition there are a number
of external partners with whom a
network has been created to support
the development of international
business. The network of external
partners has enabled a number of
services to be introduced, dedicated
to small and medium-size businesses
and characterized by quality and
professionalism. ICCI’s partners are
providers of legal services, services for
the protection of intellectual property,
banking and insurance services,
marketing and communication services,
logistics and transport, etc. All of these
service providers are coordinated
by ICCI in order to offer small and
medium-size businesses an excellent
integrated service. This will give small
and medium-size Italian businesses the
opportunity to invest in India through a
single, authorized interlocutor.

Towards a sustainable Italy
Founded in 1975 by Giulia Maria Mozzoni Crespi, with the objective of safeguarding,
preserving and promoting Italian artistic and natural heritage, FAI – Fondo Ambiente
Italiano has continued to expand its activities and its collaborations with companies over
the past 30 years.
To better understand FAI and what
it does today, we interviewed Shelly
Sandall, Italian by adoption and
enchanted with the so-called “Bel
Paese”, Manager of the Foundation’s
Marketing and Corporate Fundraising
activities.
How would you define FAI and its
mission?
In the most simple way, FAI could be
defined as a charitable Foundation
which protects, restores and opens to
the public historical houses, monuments
and natural areas. But more than a
Foundation, we consider ourselves
a movement of people who want to
guarantee that Italy does not lose its
extraordinary heritage, a movement of
people who are dedicated to fighting
against indifference to the deterioration
of the Italian environment.
FAI’s mission is to promote a
culture of respect toward the Italian
environment, defined in its entirety as
nature, landscape, architecture, art and
traditions. Working for the environment
for FAI means taking care of the places
in which people live and helping
them appreciate and fully experience
their heritage. Italy has one of the
most exceptional artistic, cultural and
historical heritages in the world – and
it belongs to everyone. For this reason,
FAI works to render it accessible to
the public, to encourage people to
experience it and to increase everyone’s
sense of responsibility to safeguard it. As
our President aptly says, “one defends
what one loves and one loves what
one knows”. An example of this is the
“Giornata FAI di Primavera”, an annual
event organized by FAI for the last 17
years through its over 100 delegations
throughout Italy – all tireless volunteers
- during which some 500 monuments,
villas, gardens and natural areas are
opened free of charge to the public.
During the month of June FAI
consolidated a special framework for
collaboration with the British Chamber
of Commerce in Italy; what does FAI
expect from this collaboration? What are
or could be the possible advantages for
the Chamber and its members?
We are very pleased to have formed
this special collaboration with the
British Chamber of Commerce for Italy
because its member companies play an
important part in the Italian Business
Community.

and the BCCI, I hope that we can create

of projects supporting their Corporate
Social Responsibility programs to the use

FAI has always worked closely with

companies often tend to be more
engaged in issues of social responsibility

of human resources.

individuals, and in particular foreign
managers and their families living in
Italy, a wonderful way to discover
the beauty of this country. We have
therefore put together two introductory
offers available to the members of the
BCCI which provide special conditions
for the enrollment in our sustaining
company program Corporate Golden
Donor as well as for individual
membership to the Foundation. Both
offer great benefits, so we do hope that
many companies will take advantage of
these special offers.
Recently, in collaboration with SDA
Bocconi, FAI organized a seminar
for the sustaining companies in the
Corporate Golden Donor program.
The theme of this seminar was
Corporate Social Responsibility; why
is it important for FAI to be in contact
with companies that practice social
responsibility?
To promote the respect of the
environment, to protect the landscape
for the good of the collectivity and to
work towards educating people about
the appropriate use of resources – all
these actions aim at increasing the
sustainability of Italy. FAI therefore
has always worked in the direction
of Corporate Social Responsibility
and we believe that there are many
opportunities to tackle this issue together
with companies. Today companies in
Italy which adopt social responsibility
policies know that the sustainability of
Italy creates the basis for the sustainability
of their own company’s activities here.
We realize that this is a very strategic
issue for companies, especially in this
difficult time of crisis when companies
need to reinforce their competitive
advantages, and therefore we want
to become a Partner to companies
who have decided to undertake this
approach. The choice of the theme of
Corporate Social Responsibility for the
seminar was therefore motivated by our
desire to learn and grow in knowledge
together with our sustaining companies.
Working together means comparing
experiences as well as experimenting
with new approaches. And in working
together in this way, FAI is able to create
enduring Partnerships in which both
company business objectives and our
objective of safeguarding the beauty of
this country can coexist.

BCCI IVA Recovery Service
On the basis of the reciprocity
agreement existing between Italy
and the UK, it is possible for British
companies to reclaim IVA (“Imposta
sul Valore Aggiunto”).
The British Chamber of Commerce
for Italy delivers this service, handling
the procedures involved as well as
contacts with the appropriate fiscal
authorities. Companies wishing to
take advantage of the service send
their relevant documentation to
the Chamber where it is examined
and IVA refund application forms
are prepared, in compliance with
the terms and regulations provided
for by law. The application is then
forwarded to the appropriate office
by staff experienced in dealing with
Ministry departments.
The state of progress of the
application is constantly monitored
and reminder action taken to ensure
things proceed rapidly. The client
company is regularly updated on
progresses, until the process has been
completed and the refund received.

Why Veneto?
Veneto is one of the most economically prosperous areas of Italy, with significant
development in the last 50 years to move from a predominantly agricultural economy to
one based around modern manufacturing, distribution and services.
Veneto is the region in North-East Italy
which is logistically close to the north
(Brennero motorway leads to Austria and
Germany), the east (Slovenia, Croatia and
Eastern Europe), south (Central/Southern
Italy) and west (Milan/Lombardy and
France) with fast north/south and east/
west motorway and rail links, as well
as three international airports in Verona,
Venice and Treviso. Venice also provides
a port.
The economy has a high proportion
of small and medium-sized enterprises,
typically family companies, including
some family companies which have
become large and famous.

the Italian market, both in terms of economic potential as well as quality of life.
Prof Dodds began his career when
he entered the English Department
of the University of Udine in 1979.
A few years later, he transferred to
the University of Trieste and in 1994
became Dean of the Interpreters’
School there. He has also been

Consul for Great Britain and
Northern Ireland, Secretary General
of the Corps Consulaire and Regional

published extensively in English
and in Italian on a variety of aspects
of Comparative Linguistics and
Translation Theory. He has also been
consultant editor for HarperCollins

che gli imprenditori mostrano verso

intervistati dichiara che investirà nei
prossimi 12 mesi. Credo che la capacità
di guardare oltre la crisi, scorgendo
opportunità di nuovi investimenti sia
il segnale più rassicurante proveniente
dal sistema economico locale.

Non scoraggiarsi mai, rimboccarsi
le maniche e pensare al futuro. Un
realismo che fa rima con ottimismo: la

concerto
dell’edizione
dell’Ottobre Musicale 2009 si svolgerà
il 31 ottobre con l’esibizione della
Compagnia Cantante Ginguruberù
dal titolo “Concerto di brani
musicali della tradizione popolare
internazionale”.
La Compagnia è nata nel 2004
dall’idea di alcuni amici che volevano
formare un gruppo vocale di pochi
elementi con l’accompagnamento
del pianoforte, in alternativa ai cori
tradizionali. Il nome, “Ginguruberù”,
sembra uno scherzoso scioglilingua,
ma ha in realtà un significato
profondo, che pare sottolineato
dalla musicalità stessa dei suoni
che compongono questa parola Ginguruberù ha il significato della
campana che suona a distesa e
annuncia importanti novità.
Il
programma
del
concerto
comprenderà, tra gli altri, alcuni
brani musicali della tradizione
popolare italiana ed internazionale
nonché alcune canzoni di successo di
Beatles, Battisti, Ellington e De André.

Tradizione e progetti futuri del Teatro alla Scala di Milano.

Fiore all’occhiello della città di Milano,
il Teatro alla Scala, detto anche Teatro
la Scala, è il più famoso teatro d’Italia.
Costruito per volere di Maria Teresa
d’Austria sulle ceneri del vecchio Teatro
Ducale, distrutto da un incendio nel 1776,
fu progettato dall’architetto Giuseppe
Piermarini sul luogo ove prima sorgeva
la basilica di Santa Maria alla Scala (XIV
secolo) da cui prende il nome. Il 3 agosto
1776 l’opera “Europa riconosciuta” di
Antonio Salieri inaugurò il prestigioso
Teatro che assurse a sede della stagione
lirica e del balletto della città di Milano.
Appena nato il Teatro ospitava le
“opere buffe napoletane”, ma, intorno
al 1812, si decise di accontentare una
più ampia fascia di pubblico mettendo
in rappresentazione i melodrammi: tra
le maggiori opere che vi hanno preso
vita si ricordino “Il Flauto magico” di
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart nel 1816,
“Chiara e Serafina” di Gaetano Donizetti
tra il 1822 e il 1825, “Il pirata” di Vincenzo
Bellini, “Oberto, Conte di San Bonifacio”

di Giuseppe Verdi nel 1839 e “Le Villi”,
“Manon Lescaut”, “Madama Butterfly”,
“La fanciulla del West” di Giacomo
Puccini nel 1855.
Edificato in puro stileneoclassico, il
teatro venne rimaneggiato numerose
volte: nel 1867, nel 1921 durante la
direzione di Arturo Toscanini e ancora
alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale,
quando l’11 maggio del 1946, Toscanini
stesso diresse uno storico concerto
per celebrare la riapertura dell’edificio,
restaurato dopo i gravi danni subiti
durante i bombardamenti alleati. Il 31
dicembre 2001 il Teatro venne però
nuovamente chiuso per importanti lavori
di rinnovamento, curati dall’architetto
svizzero Mario Botta e le attività artistiche
furono quindi trasferite nel nuovo Teatro
degli Arcimboldi. Dal 7 dicembre 2004
la stagione operistica è tornata nella
sua sede storica, con il significativo
allestimento della “Europa riconosciuta” di
Salieri, originario atto di nascita del teatro

milanese, diretta dal maestro Riccardo
Muti. I lavori hanno regalato una nuova
struttura più moderna introducendo
delle tecnologie che ne hanno migliorato
sicurezza, comfort e funzionalità, sia per
il pubblico sia per gli “addetti ai lavori”
sul palco o dietro le quinte, nonostante il
punto forte resti l’acustica.
Annesso al teatro fu costituito nel 1913,
all’interno dei locali del Casino Ricordi,
il Museo teatrale alla Scala, arricchito
dalle donazioni di documenti, cimeli,
quadri, e completato dalla biblioteca del
drammaturgo e regista Renato Simoni.
Per aumentare la varietà di proposte del
cartellone fu, inoltre, costruita la Piccola
Scala (600 posti), destinata all’allestimento
di opere da camera moderne e al recupero
del grande patrimonio melodrammatico
antico. Inaugurata il 26 dicembre 1955
con “Il Matrimonio segreto” di Domenico
Cimarosa, la Piccola Scala fu chiusa nel
1983. Il Teatro alla Scala rappresenta un
punto di eccellenza culturale nel mondo
grazie alla incessante attività svolta dai suoi
organizzatori; un impegno che si consolida
attraverso una programmazione di grande
qualità e un’intensa attività di tournée
all’estero che portano la Scala e Milano
in ogni parte del mondo. Nel programma
della prossima stagione spiccano, come
sempre, la qualità delle scelte e delle
personalità artistiche e l’internazionalità
delle iniziative; il 2010 vedrà il ritorno
dopo ben 23 anni di assenza del maestro
Claudio Abbado. Va sottolineata, infine,
l’importanza del progetto “Under30” per
rafforzare la vocazione sociale della Scala
anche nei giovani attraverso una vera e
propria community dedicata.

The Royal Albert Hall has a long and
rich history as one of the most important
activity centres in the world. It is an
arts centre dedicated to the husband of
Queen Elizabeth, Prince Albert, located
in South Kensington in central London
- also known as the Albertopolis. The
Hall is the active part of the complex in
honor of the Prince Consort, while the
decorative part is the “Albert Memorial”
- directly to the north of Kensington
Gardens, now separated from the Hall
by the dense traffic that crosses the
Kensington Gore.
A great Central Hall, dedicated to the
promotion of Art and Science, was a key
part of Prince Albert’s vision for the South
Kensington estate, which was to be
developed on land purchased with the
profits of the Great Exhibition of 1851.
From the outset the Hall was intended to
be a versatile building not only used for
concerts but also for exhibitions of art and
of manufactured goods, and for scientific
conferences and demonstrations. Its
purpose was to enable the population
at large to engage with the work of the
surrounding museums and educational
institutions.
The heart of the Hall is the vast internal
auditorium, 185 feet wide by 219 feet long,
covered by a glazed dome constructed
of wrought iron girders; at the time of its
construction, it was credited as the largest
structure of its kind in the world. Another
notable feature was the great Henry
Willis Organ - at the time, the largest in
the world - substantially modified and
enlarged between 1921 - 1933 by the
Durham-based organ firm of Harrisons.
The distinctive exterior of the Hall,
inspired by the architecture of Northern
Italy, was built from some 6 million red
bricks and eighty thousand blocks of
decorative terracotta. Surmounting the
exterior walls and above the balustrades
smoking gallery, runs a continuous 800
foot long terracotta frieze composed of
allegorical groups of figures engaged
in a range of artistic endeavors, crafts,
scientific and other cultural pursuits.

jazz, folk and world music, rock and pop
concerts, circus, opera, dance, comedy,
tennis, award ceremonies, film premieres
and events of national significance such
as the Royal British Legion’s annual
Festival of Remembrance.
Outside the main auditorium, there are
free Friday lunchtime concerts, Sunday
brunch performances of world music
and jazz held in the Hall’s Café Consort
and occasional concerts by cutting
edge new talents in the Hall’s hush
series presented in the Elgar Room. A
series of exhibitions of photographs
and children’s work is presented in the
Hall’s ground floor corridor. The Hall
continues to fulfill its commitment to
promoting science primarily through its
“Learning & Participation” programme
for school children and by occasional
public lectures.

i Giardini, l’Arsenale e altri luoghi di
Venezia è aperta al pubblico la 53°
Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte
Contemporanea “Making Worlds”
diretta da Daniel Birnbaum, Rettore
dal 2001 della Städelschule di
Francoforte sul Meno. In occasione
di “Fare Mondi”, oltre 90 artisti
provenienti da tutto il mondo si
sono espressi sul tema del processo
creativo tramite l’ausilio di forme
artistiche diverse: installazioni, video
e film, scultura, performance, pittura
e disegno.
Numerosi sono stati i premi assegnati
ad alcune delle opere esposte alla
mostra “Making Worlds”. Lo scorso
6 giugno, una giuria internazionale
presieduta dalla direttrice del corso
di Laurea Specialistica in Arti Visive
dello IUAV di Venezia, dottoressa
Angela Vettese, ha assegnato il Leone
d’oro per la migliore Partecipazione
nazionale agli Stati Uniti d’America
per l’energia e la precisione dell’arte
di Bruce Nauman, il Leone d’Oro
per il miglior artista a Tobias
Rehberger e il Leone d’Argento per
il più promettente giovane artista a
Nathalie Djurberg.

The London-based Polish artist Goshka
Macuga is widely acclaimed for her
sculptural installations of historic
objects and documents. In 1955
Nelson Rockefeller commissioned a
life- size tapestry of Picasso’s painting.
Some thirty years later this was lent to
the United Nations Headquarters in
New York. Macuga has now conceived
a unique venue for public gatherings
which references a key moment in the
Whitechapel Gallery’s history: in 1939
the Gallery hosted Picasso’s Guernica.
The room has been designed to
accommodate meetings, discussions
and debates around a central table,
with Guernica once again as a
backdrop.

Le avventure "in solitario" di un velista
Giovanni Soldini è uno sportivo innamorato del mare, la cui vita è scandita dalle regate e
dal rapporto d’amore con la sua barca. L’ultima delle sue numerose vittorie risale al luglio
2009, quando il velista ha trionfato in coppia nell’edizione 2009 della Les Sables-HortaLes Sables.
Giovanni Soldini, milanese, classe
1966, sportivo e innamorato della vela
fin da bambino, si racconta ai lettori di
“Focus on Italy” ripercorrendo le tappe
della sua carriera, un percorso che ha
sempre seguito le rotte del mare: “Ho
fatto la prima traversata dell’Atlantico
a 16 anni – inizia - e nel 1989 la
regata transatlantica per imbarcazioni
da crociera su un Sangermani di 16
metri.”.
Avventuriero, si è fatto conoscere dal
grande pubblico come navigatore
solitario in occasione della La BauleDakar del 1991 e così precisa: “Sono
arrivato terzo in classifica generale e
secondo di classe, finendo a 22 ore da
Alain Gautier, vincitore assoluto, e a 19
ore da Philippe Poupon, altro esperto
uomo di mare.”. L’anno successivo
Soldini ha intrapreso una nuova sfida,
partecipando con la stessa imbarcazione,
ribattezzata Misco, alla Europe 1 Star, la
transatlantica in solitario da Plymouth
(GB) a Newport (USA). “Ero in testa nei
50 piedi – descrive - e terzo in generale
quando, a 1200 miglia dal traguardo, la
rottura dell’asse di un timone, causato
dall’urto con un pezzo di ghiaccio alla
deriva, provoca una falla a poppa.
Con le poche attrezzature disponibili
riparo l’avaria e concludo la regata al
secondo posto nei 50 piedi e primo
degli italiani.”.
Dopo l’Europe 1 star, con due velisti
francesi, Soldini ha affrontato la
Québec-St. Malo, dal Canada alla
Francia e così ricorda quell’esperienza:
“A 800 miglia dall’Irlanda, Misco
(il nome dell’imbarcazione n.d.r)
perde la chiglia e si rovescia. Io e i
miei compagni ci siamo immersi per
entrare in cabina e recuperare il set di
sopravvivenza. Quindi ci siamo portati
sullo scafo rovesciato in attesa dei
soccorsi, che grazie all’SOS lanciato da
bordo, arrivano dopo 14 ore. Noi, sani
e salvi, ce l’abbiamo fatta, ma Misco
è stato abbandonato in mezzo alle
acque.”.
In seguito a questo incidente di
percorso, Soldini, rimasto senza barca,
nel 1994, grazie a Kodak, costruisce
un nuovo 50 piedi. “Il 50 piedi Kodak

Italia, viene progettato da Jean Berret,
che aveva già realizzato Looping nel
1991. Questa volta Berret progettò
l’imbarcazione presso una comunità di
recupero per tossicodipendenti.”. “Nel
1994 - prosegue Soldini - con Kodak
sono stato il primo italiano della storia
ad intraprendere il BOC Challenge, il
giro del mondo in solitario a tappe,
raggiungendo il secondo posto. Poi nel
1996 è iniziata la collaborazione con
Telecom Italia.”. Il velista continua
nel racconto concitato delle tappe che
hanno segnato la sua vita: “Grazie a
Telecom ho attrezzato la barca con un
albero in carbonio. Un’innovazione
che mi ha portato alla vittoria della
Roma X 2, la regata di 535 miglia nel
Mediterraneo e poi qualche mese
dopo al successo nella Europe 1
Star.”.
Dal 1997 al 2000 Soldini vive un’altra
sfida-avventura, correndo con il 60
piedi Fila. Così ricorda quegli anni: “Il
primo impegno è stato la New YorkSan Francisco. Durante la traversata
verso gli USA, Fila urta un oggetto
alla deriva e quindi la regata viene
sospesa, con mio grande dispiacere. Il
26 marzo 1998, riparata la barca, sono
partito per New York per battere il
record da Sandy Hook a Lizard Point,
punta occidentale dell’Inghilterra.
Con me quattro amici velisti: Andrea
Romanelli, Guido Brogli, Andrea
Tarlarini e Bruno Laurent. Siamo partiti
bene, ma a 400 miglia dal traguardo,
siamo stati sorpresi da una tempesta con
vento a 80 nodi e onde di 15/20 metri.
L’imbarcazione, nella notte del 3 aprile,
viene rovesciata da un’onda che spezza
l’albero. Con un’attrezzatura di fortuna
la barca raggiunge Lorient. Dopo tre
mesi di lavoro, poi, Fila è sulla linea di

partenza dell’Atlantic Alone, la regata in
solitario da Falmouth (GB) a Charleston
(USA). Per la prima volta intraprendo
una gara da solo. Scelgo la rotta verso
le Azzorre e, dopo una settimana di
regata, vado al comando staccando gli
avversari e con la vittoria, stabilisco un
nuovo record con 21 giorni, 17 ore, 7
minuti e 20 secondi. Nel 1998 arriva
l’Around Alone, giro del mondo a

tappe che parte da Charleston (USA).
Nella terza frazione entro in salvataggio
di Isabelle Autissier, che si rovescia
nel Sud Pacifico sulla rotta verso Capo
Horn ed insieme vinciamo la terza
tappa. L’ultima tappa si conclude con
la mia vittoria.”.
Nel 2001 Soldini vara a Rochelle il
primo trimarano Open 60’ italiano e
con la nuova imbarcazione, velocissima
e potente, dal 2001 al 2005 lo sportivo
partecipa alle principali competizioni
internazionali.
A settembre 2007 viene varato il nuovo
Class 40 Telecom Italia con il quale
l’esperto uomo di mare vince, insieme
a Pietro D’Alì, la Transat Jacques Vabre
2007 e in solitario The Artemis Transat
2008 e, a maggio 2009, arriva la vittoria
della Transmanche in coppia con
Karine Fauconnier. “La regata è andata
bene grazie alla barca, che si è rivelata
in perfette condizioni, e all’ottima
intesa sportiva che si è creata con
Karine. Lei si è occupata di più della
navigazione, io sono stato parecchio al

timone. Meglio di così non potevamo
fare. L’unico rimprovero a Karine è che
si prendeva sempre la mia giacca e la
ritrovavo piena di mollette...”.
Soldini
procede
entusiasta:
“A
giugno 2009 a bordo di Telecom
Italia finalmente sono partito per
una regata oceanica, la Les SablesHorta-Les Sables, regata a due tappe
in doppio riservata ai Class 40. 2540
miglia in tutto: 1270 miglia fino a Horta
(Azzorre) dove c’è stato uno stop di
una settimana, e altrettante di ritorno
a Les Sables. La mia co-skipper è stata
ancora Karine Fauconnier.”. Prima di
partire Giovanni ha espresso la sua
eccitazione per la nuova impresa: “Non
vedevo l’ora di partire, di prendere
il ritmo di navigazione a cui sono
abituato. Finalmente entravamo nel
vivo della stagione. Questa regata
ha rappresentato un appuntamento
importante che ha messo a dura prova
barche ed equipaggi. L’uscita dal golfo di
Biscaglia può essere molto impegnativa
anche nel mese di luglio. Io e Karine
eravamo pronti, ci eravamo allenati e
affiatati durante la Transmanche. Non
ci restava che mollare gli ormeggi”. E
proprio il 22 luglio Soldini e Fauconnier
hanno realizzano un altro successo
nell’Atlantico. Sul 40 piedi Telecom
vincono la Les Sables-Horta-Les Sables,
la regata velica in doppio dalla Francia
alle Azzorre e ritorno.
La seconda tappa, partita il 15 luglio
scorso da Horta, è stata percorsa da
Telecom Italia in 6 giorni, 5 ore 39
minuti e 32 secondi, alla media di
8,49 nodi. “Abbiamo navigato bene
facendo pochi errori - dice Soldini
all’arrivo - o comunque facendone
meno dei nostri avversari. Il momento
più critico della seconda tappa è
stato subito dopo la partenza perché
abbiamo deciso di aggirare una grossa
bolla di alta pressione con pochissimo
vento. Abbiamo perciò optato per una
rotta a nord-ovest che ci allontanava
dal traguardo e ci siamo ritrovati in
ventesima posizione. Ma è stata una
mossa che ha pagato molto bene.
Aggiungo poi che Telecom Italia era
preparata molto bene, cosa che ha
permesso a me e Karine di dedicarci
completamente alla navigazione, al
meteo e alla strategia.”. Grande merito,
spiega, va dato alla barca: “Telecom
Italia è una barca che va molto forte,
ha un buon passo, è nata bene.”.
L’ultimo appuntamento sportivo della
stagione estiva di Giovanni Soldini e
Telecom Italia è stata la Rolex Fastnet
Race, la leggendaria regata inglese in
equipaggio lunga 608 miglia che è
partita domenica 9 agosto da Cowes,
sull’isola di Wight, per arrivare a
Plymouth.

Classe 1966, è un velista italiano
milanese,
divenuto
famoso
soprattutto per le sue navigazioni
solitarie. A 16 anni compie per
la prima volta nella sua vita la
traversata dell’Atlantico. Nel 1989
vince la A.R.C. (Atlantic Rally for
Cruisers), la regata transatlantica per
imbarcazioni da crociera. Diventa
famoso, come navigatore solitario,
durante La Baule-Dakar del 1991. Per
molti è il miglior navigatore solitario
di tutti i tempi e ha avuto il merito di
far avvicinare allo sport della barca a
vela centinaia di persone che hanno
scoperto la passione per il mare e
per la vela grazie alle sue imprese
negli oceani sparsi per il mondo.

as they try to save money and avoid
individual and collective dismissals at
the same time.

operations in Italy: the “Ordinary Wage
Guarantee Fund”, the “Extraordinary

Derogation Wage Guarantee Fund”. It
must be stressed that these funds are
utilised only when there is a suspension

programme
The announcement of a new amnesty
programme permitting taxpayers to
repatriate previously undeclared cash
and other assets has been politically
justified by the need to allow
shareholders a way of repatriating
funds to inject their cash into starved
businesses during a recession. This,
combined with a serious requirement
for funds on the part of the government
for the rebuilding programme in the
wake of the earthquake in Abruzzo
in June, has allowed a controversial
scheme to go through.
Under the programme, known as the
“tax shield” individuals will be able
to declare the existence of hitherto
undisclosed cash and other assets
(moveable or immoveable property)
held outside Italy and be able either
to repatriate them into the European
Community without fear of further
tax assessment regarding that cash/
assets, by paying a tax which will
be a maximum of 5% of the amount
declared. The programme is similar
to an earlier scheme spanning 2001
to 2003, which permitted offshore
cash and assets to be disclosed upon
payment of first a 2.5% tax and then
a 4% charge. That earlier programme

Business tax incentives
More interesting for foreign corporate
investors coming into Italy are some
of the tax based incentives recently
announced. These include:
• an exemption from taxable profits
of an amount equal to 50% of
investment made in new plant and
equipment up to June 2010;
• increase in the limit for offset of
tax credits from Euro 500,000 to Euro
700,00 annually;
• a review of the rates for fixed
asset depreciation. The possibility of
claiming accelerated depreciation for
short life and intensively used assets
has recently been abolished as part of
the package reducing the corporate
income (IRES) rate to 27.5%, but now
looks set to make a comeback as part
of a package to incentivise high-tech
investment;
• a programme of tax credits
for investment in research and
development may well will be

• implementation of rules allowing
taxpayers to keep their accounting
records in electronic format. A feature
of the Italian scene is the detailed
body of legislation detailing how
accounting records must be kept.
These prescriptive rules stem from
a desire to facilitate the inspection
and audit by the tax authorities of
business records. This makes Italy an
expensive jurisdiction to do business
in, especially for multi-nationals
seeking to centralise and standardise
their accounting systems. The
introduction of these quite detailed
rules finally permitting the keeping
of accounts entirely on computer is
therefore very welcome.
