Introduction The MAVEN project is expected to create valuable assets in terms of exploitable technology and knowledge, which deserve consequent dissemination and exploitation activities, as well as preparation for later commercialization. The dissemination actions of the project touches a certain number of communities (Research, Industry) and it has been carried out in all of them. The MAVEN consortium is aware that each community requires different types of dissemination activities and materials to be optimally addressed. This deliverable describes the dissemination activities undertaken in RP1 from R&D performers and Industrial partners with regards to the MAVEN project. Likewise, it outlines the dissemination activities planned in RP2. Furthermore, MAVEN will be successful if the outputs of the research will be converted into successful products on the market. This can be achieved only with an accurate market analysis, a realistic exploitation plan preparation, and adequate exploitation activities during the project. The markets for MAVEN have been already identified including products and services for the software industry. Key success factors include: understanding of user needs, attention to marketing, efficiency of development, effective use of outstanding technology, and involvement of senior product management within partner companies. The objective of the exploitation is first to create at the European level a strong interest and consensus among the research and commercial communities addressed by the MAVEN project. This will be achieved by making the project visible by presenting its objectives and results in most important international R&D, marketing and commercial fairs, workshops and conferences, in order to share the latest technical achievements with other sectors of the community. Thus, this deliverable outlines the individual exploitation actions related to the technical outcomes of the project. The description of all marketable project results is the first step towards a complete Exploitation Plan to ensure the proper transfer of results and the commercialization of the MAVEN tools. 1 D8.3 – Interim plan for use and dissemination of the knowledge 2. Dissemination activities in RP1 (M1-‐M9) 2.1. Dissemination activities of the project 2.1.1. Elaboration of press-‐release (D8.1) – Responsible: PLY During the first month of the project, an official press release (see deliverable D8.1) was agreed among the partners of MAVEN. The original text, in English, was translated by each partner to its local language for proper distribution. It was also agreed that each partner could add further text for explaining more clearly its role and contribution to the project. 2.1.2. Project logo – Responsible: GRAD A logo was designed and adopted at the very beginning of the project, to help creating an easily recognizable visual identity. Such logo is used in the public website (see next section) and all official documents of MAVEN, both internal and external. 2.1.3. Public website (D8.2) – Responsible: GRAD During the first month of the project, a public website for MAVEN was launched. As the website is mainly intended to raise awareness about the project itself and the problems related to data management and security in an ever-‐increasing amount of multimedia files, the objective public are non-‐specialists, in particular people belonging to the Security and Media sectors. Hence, the language used in the website is non-‐technical. The website is visible from the URL http://www.maven-‐project.eu Besides providing basic information about the project and its partners, the website features a News section which, by June 1st 2014, contains 18 entries. Figure 1 below shows the visits received by the website since it was launched. The total number of visits as of June 1st 2014 is 3385. Other relevant web statistics are shown in Table 1. ARTH The following actions were taken: 1. We had several meetings with our client to whom we have developed and we are maintaining the “Top Snap” web application mentioned in the DOW. “Top Snap” is web application for the real estate business allows reliably uploading a large number of raw photos for multiple properties and delivering high quality retouched images to the clients within 24 hours. Clearly, this tool would benefit from the possibility to identify retouches and manipulations in the photographs, implementing security measures to protect photographs from unauthorised use, as well as using the advanced search functionalities to manage in a more efficient way large digital libraries of images. On those meetings we were discussing about the possibilities of the MAVEN modules and the correct way of integrating the modules within the current system for the benefit of the application, its users and of course the client. 2. We had meeting with other client of ours explaining the power of the MAVEN modules and the possibility to be integrated in their application which is under our maintenance. The application is for storing and maintaining of photographs taken by client’s photographers on various race events around the world and selling them mainly to the participants on the events. The application, the users who are maintaining the application and the client could benefit from integrating the MAVEN modules within the application in a similar way as in Top Snap. 2.3.4. XTREAM 2.3.4.1. Website and social media XTREAM has used the following media to disseminate the MAVEN project: • “XTREAM starts its participation in the R&D European project MAVEN" o Type of publication: XTREAM Web site o Publication date: 04 Nov. 2013 o URL: http://www.xtreamsig.com/noticias.php#NOT44 • “XTREAM starts its participation in the R&D European project MAVEN" o Type of publication: Corporate Newsletter o Publication date: 12 Nov. 2013 7 D8.3 – Interim plan for use and dissemination of the knowledge 2.3.4.2. Industry events In 2014 XTREAM has participated in the SICUR trade show in Spain and in the V Iberoamerican Justice and Technology fair in Chile, where the technologies developed by the MAVEN project were presented especially to partners as future functionalities of XTREAM products. The feedback provided by them will be taken into account by the Technical department for future MAVEN technology integration. 2.3.4.3. One to one contacts The dissemination activities of the project have been mostly oriented to our commercial partner network, to get maximum feedback from them for the MAVEN technology integration project in XTREAM software products. In parallel XTREAM has developed some commercial meetings with key customers, where MAVEN value proposition has been presented as of next incorporation to XTREAM portfolio. Their feedback has been gathered as a valuable input for the sales and marketing departments, who are working in the preparation of the commercial speech and documents. 2.3.5. PLY 2.3.5.1. Website and social media PLY consolidated the information on and references to the MAVEN project on its homepage (http://www.playence.com/company/playence-‐labs). Moreover, we have used Social Media to disseminate the project in the following ways: • • • “playence participates in the Kick-‐Off meeting of the Research for SMEs project MAVEN” o Type of publication: Facebook o Publication date: 17 Oct. 2013 o URL: https://www.facebook.com/playence/posts/10151882981312226%201 %20de “playence backed by EU Funds to Keep on Developing State-‐of-‐the-‐Art Services and Experiences” o Type of publication: News section in PLY’s blog o Publication date: 9 Dec. 2013 o URL: http://playence.com/news/229-‐playence-‐backed-‐by-‐eu-‐funds “playence Backed by EU Funds to Keep on Developing State-‐of-‐the-‐Art Services and Experiences” o Type of publication: Newsletter o Publication date: 1 Dec. 2013 8 D8.3 – Interim plan for use and dissemination of the knowledge o URL: http://hosted.vresp.com/827437/a9c6d1c6c8/1467607911/dcda2cce81/ 2.3.5.2. Exploiting channels from Social Media creating awareness of our new technology Consolidating the initial one-‐to-‐one meeting had in RP1 13 D8.3 – Interim plan for use and dissemination of the knowledge 4. Exploitable results The following section describes the exploitable results by each of the company. It is worth noticing that the MAVEN tools can be exploited as a complete suite in a “Search and Verify” scenario. This approach will be evaluated during the second part of the project, once all the individual modules are implemented and integrated in a common demonstrator. 4.1. AMPED The exploitable results by AMPED will be the tools for: • • • Image integrity verification (new algorithms) Image integrity verification (decision fusion framework) Video integrity verification Even though AMPED already has a software on the market for image integrity verification called AMPED AUTHENTICATE (http://ampedsoftware.com/Authenticate), the new algorithms will work on types of forgery and images that currently are not supported by AMPED AUTHENTICATE. Furthermore, the big issue with image forgery detection is that the analyst is required to have a lot of experience to interpret and integrate the result of different algorithms. With the decision fusion framework under developement in MAVEN we want to create a more automated and easier-‐to-‐use system which will give the analyst a more detailed result even in complex cases. Finally, video integrity verification will be an exceptionally useful result to exploit. On the market there is basically no product dedicated to the evaluation of video authenticity and there is a strong demand. Actually, the topic is so complex that even in literature there is very little on video, contrary to images. 4.2. ARTH The exploitable results by ARTH will be the following modules developed in project: • • • Image source identification Image integrity verification Object and scene recognition The Top Snap application developed and maintained by ARTH is facing copyright issues. Copyright of all images is owned by the Top Snap photographer who took them. The person/business who commissioned these photographs is granted exclusive rights to use them for one campaign only. Images cannot/must not be transferred to other businesses for their use without your Top Snap photographer's permission, and any such activity could be deemed a breach of Top Snap's copyright policy. Image source identification 14 D8.3 – Interim plan for use and dissemination of the knowledge module will help photographs to identify whether a given image is taken by their camera and recognize a possible breach of Top Snap's copyright policy. Every image taken by Top Snap photographers is subject to digital processing and refining by Top Snap retouchers before they are released to the clients. After retouching is done, the supervisor must compare the retouched against original image and confirm retoucher had correctly done all requests by photographers. Image integrity verification module will help the Top Snap supervisor to quickly identify all retouched areas on the image and speed up the quality control process. Also the module will help the supervisor not to miss a retouched area. Given the fact that over 1,000 images should pass the quality control on a daily basis, this module will save the supervisor significant time on a daliy basis, improve the productivity of the supervisor and the application itself and of course increase the Top Snap service quality while decreasing the delivery period. Top Snap retouchers during image retouching process often have a need to search through their image database looking for a suitable object or pattern they used previously. Object and scene recognition module will be introduced to the Top Snap retouchers as very powerful tool which will enable them to search their image database in a smart way, close to them and their work they do for to Top Snap, saving their time and at same time increase their productivity. For Top Snap this will mean speeding-‐up the delivery service and shortening the retouching costs. 4.3. XTREAM The exploitable results for XTREAM will be the following modules developed in MAVEN project: • Result #4: Text localization and extraction • Result #5: Spoken keyword detection • Result #6: Face Detection and Recognition • Result #7: Object, logo, and scene recognition This ample technology contribution of MAVEN project will improve XTREAM portfolio value proposal by complementing our core technology assets with market appreciated capabilities, increasing XTREAM offer competitiveness and making possible a sustained revenue increase for the company. At this point of the project our commercial approach is to implement these new technology assets through the following revenue model: • MAVEN technologies integration as particular features for the principal products already developed by XTREAM (mainly BROADVIEW; MEDIABOX and CICERO) 4.4. PLY The exploitable results by PLY will be based on the following project’s results: 15 D8.3 – Interim plan for use and dissemination of the knowledge • Result #4: Text localization and extraction • Result #5: Spoken keyword detection • Result #6: Face Detection and Recognition • Result #7: Object, logo, and scene recognition These new technology assets have improved the technological company’s level of expertise, open new opportunities, and in the long run, will increase revenues made. The revenue model for these technology assets will have three flavours: • As part of the products already available at PLY (in particular, playence Enterprise) • As an off-‐the-‐shell product available for sale, lease, or license offering integration or tailoring with specific custom developments • As SaaS with a monthly/yearly fee depending on number of users and media assets 5. Individual exploitation actions 5.1. AMPED Even though it is a bit early to define in detail the exploitation plan for the said results, the most probable path AMPED will follow for the exploitation is to create a higher-‐end version of AMPED AUTHENTICATE which will include the tools developed in MAVEN and that will also do video forgery detection. Given the good early results obtained at time of preparation of the present document, we foresee the possibility of including partial results of the research in AMPED AUTHENTICATE even before the end of the project. In this was our users could test the current status and give us suggestions to improve even more the tools. 5.1.1. Technical integration In this step, the MAVEN tools will be integrated into AMPED AUTHENTICATE. We estimate this will take approximately 6 months from the end of the project and will include: • • • • Integration of MAVEN libraries into the source code of our project Preparation and testing of user interface for the new tools Preparation of samples and documentation of the new tools Test of the new version before the official release Release of an updated version of AMPED AUTHENTICATE with the MAVEN tools. Key benefits will be: 16 D8.3 – Interim plan for use and dissemination of the knowledge o o o Additional features for image integrity verification Decision fusion framework for image integrity verification Video integrity verification module 5.1.2. Release on the market The release on the market of the new tools will allow us to market a high-‐end version of AUTHENTICATE with a forecasted price increase of about 50%. We plan, in fact, to raise the current price from 6000 euros per license to 9000 euros per license. The expected benefits of the results of the integration of the MAVEN tools will be: • • • • Maintaining and improving the technological market leadership Maintaining and improving our current reputation as innovators in our market Increasing the number of sales between 30%-‐40% Overall increase of revenue given both by the increase in price and in number of sales The introduction on the market will be done as usual with a: • • • • Blog post Release of the news on several press release networks Official social network company accounts for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ Trade shows and one to one meetings 5.2. ARTH 5.2.1. Top Snap integration The starting step of exploitation MAVEN modules for ARTH would be integrating the modules in existing Top Snap application: • • • • Installing the MAVEN libraries on the development server Programming the scripts and user interface for the use of the modules Testing the MAVEN modules simulating interaction with application by all types of Top Snap users Release the new MAVEN modules in production version of Top Snap application 5.2.2. Offering modules as products The MAVEN modules would allow ARTH to extend the current portfolio with products that are completely different to the other products offering custom integration of the modules into customers’ existing applications or development of new custom solutions that will incorporate the MAVEN modules. 17 D8.3 – Interim plan for use and dissemination of the knowledge 5.3. XTREAM The participation of XTREAM in the MAVEN project will bring a number of benefits to the company through the following lines exploitation, once the new technologies are integrated with the existing XTREAM products: • Increase perceived added value for XTREAM Solutions, enabling the raise of the solution price. • MAVEN technologies will make XTREAM solutions more competitive and will ensure an increase of market share. • The features improvement can also prevent churn from existing customers. 5.3.1. Increase Value MAVEN technologies will increase the added value of XTREAM solutions through the integration of highly appreciated features to the existing portfolio. Considering this point it is estimated that solution license price could be increased between 15% and 30%, depending on the product: • • • BROADVIEW: + 30% MEDIABOX: + 15% CICERO: +20% 5.3.2. Increase Market share It is expected that MAVEN technologies can make more attractive the XTREAM portfolio and let the company become more competitive, increasing this way the market share in those countries where XTREAM or its partner network are already present. This consideration could be translated in an expected improvement of 1% in market share for those national markets already opened. 5.3.3. Increase Customer base loyalty Once MAVEN technologies are implemented in the XTREAM portfolio, it is expected that the current customer base of improved solutions could be better preserved. The new features for the products are high-‐end technology that will be appreciated by XTREAM customers, avoiding their moving to another product. The current estimation for the impact of this revenue pillar is an expected reduction in churn around 20%, more or less equal in all those national markets where XTREAM is already present. 18 D8.3 – Interim plan for use and dissemination of the knowledge 5.4. PLY The participation of PLY in the MAVEN project will bring a number of benefits to the company around two dimensions: on the one hand, in terms of new technology assets to be exploited; on the other hand, in terms of current and new markets where that technology is exploited. Both dimensions are related to our current and future exploitation actions. 5.4.1. New technology assets The MAVEN project has contributed to overcome the previous limitations of PLY’s portfolio by extending previous technology and incorporating a fundamental set of features identified in our business plan and providing a competitive advantage over our competitors. The project helped the company to monitor latest trends, technology, and findings in order to improve our products and develop new technology assets. Thereby, as part of our strategy, playence has reinforced its portfolio with many of the outcomes of the project in which the company has participated (see previous section). It is estimated that these new technology assets will directly and indirectly help PLY to sustain their revenue growth in the next 2-‐3 years after the end of the project and increase a 15% price of the different licenses of our products and technologies. 5.4.2. Current and new markets The new technology assets help PLY to develop our current markets and open opportunities in new emerging ones. PLY is focused in penetrating the Enterprise Search and Broadcasting Production segment where they see an ample opportunity for growth, as supported by their market research. PLY has benefited from the plethora of organizations already part of our commercial network to establish and maintain new commercial partnerships in the area. Also, the market related with search technologies is very attractive due to the wide range of domains where such technology is applicable (e.g. e-‐ commerce or Education). The commercial exploitation of the new technology assets will take place in Spain, Austria, the UK and the US, countries where Playence is currently active or expects to be active when the project results start being commercialized. Opportunistically, PLY is following some leads in South America and Middle East. 19 D8.3 – Interim plan for use and dissemination of the knowledge 20 6. Conclusions and further steps This deliverable describes the dissemination activities undertook in RP1 from R&D performers and Industrial partners with regards to the MAVEN project. Likewise, it outlines the dissemination activities planned in RP2. Moreover, it outlines the individual exploitation actions related to the technical outcomes of the project. The description of all marketable project results is the first step towards a complete Exploitation Plan to ensure the proper transfer of results and the commercialization of the MAVEN tools. The industrial partners of MAVEN, which are leaders in their fields, will ensure the wider industrial uptake of the technologies developed in the project, by adopting them in their products and by developing innovative business models that take advantage of them as it was explained in this deliverable. The commercial benefits of MAVEN include short term and medium-‐to-‐long term results: • • Short term: within the period of the project, MAVEN should be able to build at the European level a strong interest in the project activities by attending several dissemination events and one-‐to-‐one commercial meetings. Those events and opportunities should create a way for the exchange of information, feedback and remarks between end-‐users and commercial communities and the MAVEN industrial partners. These international activities will also help the consortium to remain up-‐to-‐date. Medium-‐to-‐long term: at the end of the project and in the follow-‐up activities, the industrial partners should commercially and technically exploit the results achieved. This will be achieved by following the appropriate exploitation mechanisms and business plans defined in this and the following deliverable, including: licensing or subscription offers to bundle, integrating MAVEN technologies to pre-‐existing successful systems, products and services. Final licensing business models and IPR management documents will be created in order to provide a trusted legal framework (this will be part of the consortium agreement among partners). Royalty share and technological benefit should be the initial direct benefits for the MAVEN consortium partners D8.3 – Interim plan for use and dissemination of the knowledge 7. MAVEN is a collaborative project among seven European partners, which has been selected by the European Commission as one of the projects funded under the “Research for the benefit of SMEs” programme, in the 7th Framework Programme. The focus of this programme is to foster applied research driven by the needs of small and medium-sized companies, with the aim of producing a positive impact on their business in the short term. As for MAVEN, its technical goal is to develop market-ready, efficient and robust tools for the management and authenticity verification of multimedia contents. The project officially started on October 1st, and will run for 24 months until September 30th, 2015. Why MAVEN? Despite the advances in the Security and Media sectors, MAVEN arises from the need of providing such industries with a suite of advanced technological solutions, able to operate in a range of realistic scenarios (CCTV, web images, broadcast data, etc). The project results will allow SMEs, law enforcement bodies, press agencies, insurance companies and broadcasting companies, among others, to manage their multimedia assets and verify its integrity and authenticity, all in an efficient and scalable manner. http://blog.ampedsoftware.com/2013/12/16/amped-to-develop-new-image-and-video-forensic-technologies-with-the-maven-european-project/ 1/3 9/6/2014 Amped to develop new image and video forensic technologies with the MAVEN European Project | Amped Blog What will MAVEN do? MAVEN project will develop a set of tools for multimedia data management and security. The ability to effectively and efficiently make sense out of the enormous amounts of data continuously published online, including data streams, (micro)blog posts, digital archives, eScience resources, public sector data sets, and the Linked Open Data Cloud, is a crucial ingredient for Europe's transition to a knowledge society. It allows businesses, governments, communities and individuals to take decisions in an informed manner, ensuring competitive advantages, and general welfare. Find out more here: Planet Data Research topics Here is a very brief overview of research areas we are interested in and technologies we are playing with to build innovative and groundbreaking products for you. Semantic search The "killer app" of semantic technology and information management in general is still intelligent search that understands the users’ query and context. Semantic search is therefore one of our core interests. We are working in combining faceted search and filtering for 1 de 2 6/17/14 3:09 PM playence Labs (R&D) http://playence.com/company/playence-labs unstructured sources with probabilistic, linguistic, and semantic query expansion. Semantic navigation and visualization of knowledge Exploiting ontologies for the navigation of networks of information has the potential to fundamentally improving efficiency and the user experience. Similarly, there are completely novel and innovative ways of visualizing knowledge. Semantic annotation of text and multimedia The enrichment of data with semantic descriptions is another core objective of playence. We are exploring with automatic and semi-automatic methods for the annotation of text, video, audio, and images. We apply video analysis, speech extraction, game-based methods and many more to find innovation solutions for the knowledge acquisition bottleneck. Linked Open Data The Linked Open Data movement has gained a lot of momentum recently aiming at publishing datasets using RDF. We are looking into exploiting these vast amounts of linked data to enrich content and improve search.
