LA RINASCENTE PRESENTS A FUTURISTIC AFRICA
Tech-charged, idea-fuelled, space-obsessed. Forget what you know about Africa,
the world’s second-largest continent is journeying to new frontiers. This Milan
Design Week, adventure with La Rinascente into an Afrofuturist design culture.
La Rinascente’s flagship store will be celebrating the world’s original design
festival Salone del Mobile in dynamic style for 2013 as it presents ‘Afrofuture’.
Through media, events and performance, la Rinascente will demonstrate the
exciting mind-shift in African technology and how it’s radically shaping new
notions of design.
From South Africa’s FabLabs to Kenya’s ‘Silicon Savannah’, the tech boom in Africa
is a certainty. Africa’s digital diaspora has elbowed its way into the Afropolitan
conversation, but there’s a newer narrative emerging – African design. The
continent is developing on its own terms, with savvy innovators emerging from the
creative quarter and rebranding their urban spaces. It’s moving away from visual
clichés and forging experimental collaborations with technologists, writers,
musicians, photographers, illustrators, architects, coders, developers and cultural
commentators. This is a movement that’s modifying Africa’s past and present and
bringing it into the future.
This Design Week, la Rinascente will show festival-goers how Africa’s newest makers,
thinkers and dreamers are being spurred on by visions of the future. ‘Afrofuture’,
an experimental programme curated by Beatrice Galilee, will ambitiously initiate
an international design discourse around the exciting new conversations bursting
out of all corners of Africa. Galilee says: ‘As the design world expands its reach
beyond aesthetics to encompass networks, strategies and unexpected tactics, Africa
becomes an urgent critical voice in the global conversation. In the Afrofuture we
imagine the African Union as the world’s most powerful economic zone, we imagine
DIY space travel and biomorphic militarized Kwazulu vervet monkeys. We present
Chinafrica state TV, futuristic instruments and contemporary African pulp fiction.’
Over four days, la Rinascente invites festival-goers and consumers to journey with
them into the Afrofuture. Taking over la Rinascente’s flagship Milan store, each day’s
events will bring a forward-thinking, futuristic, global game-changing version of
the world’s second biggest continent. Whether real of imagined, the Africa of today
has wrapped its arms around the world of tomorrow. Writer, Nana Ocran, who has
helped develop the project for la Rinascente says: ‘Afrofuture shines a modern, panAfrican light on what can, is and could happen in design in and beyond Africa, through
wider, deeper narratives and experimental mash-ups with global innovators. It’s a
dynamic platform to kick off the conversation about African design and to think big
about how the rapidly emerging future will see mould-breaking designers coming up
from the radical underground to the global mainstream’.
From robotic mash-ups and African sci-fi to bio-design and the spirit of ‘Pop Culture’
in Ghanaian-made coffins, African creatives and makers thrillingly relay the African
experience from their own point of view.
Alberto Baldan, CEO of la Rinascente says: ‘Afrofuture is a multidisciplinary project,
like Hacked last year, for which la Rinascente is happy to give its “stage” in the very
heart of Milan. In this way we pursue two aims: we give visibility to the talent of
many designers and artists and we offer to our public an unconventional point of
view on design and its future. We like to think of la Rinascente as both incubator and
spreader of creativity.’
LA RINASCENTE PRESENTA UN’ AFRICA FUTURISTICA
Caricata a tecnologia, alimentata a idee, ossessionata dallo spazio. Dimenticatevi
tutto quello che sapevate sull’Africa. Il secondo continente più grande del mondo
sta viaggiando verso nuove frontiere. Nella Settimana del Design avventuratevi in
Rinascente e scoprite la cultura Afrofuturistica del design.
Nel suo flagship store la Rinascente celebra con stile dinamico il Salone del Mobile
2013 presentando Afrofuture. Attraverso new media, eventi e performance, darà
voce alla straordinaria rivoluzione tecnologica africana e al modo in cui sta
radicalmente definendo nuove nozioni di design.
Dai FabLabs del Sudafrica alla Silicon Savannah in Kenya, il boom tecnologico
africano è ormai un dato di fatto. Il tema della diaspora digitale si è fatto largo
nel dibattito Afropolitano, ma ora una nuova narrativa sta emergendo: il design
africano. L’Africa sta sviluppando la propria estetica, grazie a talenti visionari e
geniali che stanno emergendo dal panorama creativo e che lavorano a un re-branding
degli spazi urbani. Sempre più lontana da cliché e stereotipi visivi, inaugura
e promuove collaborazioni sperimentali con tecnologi, scrittori, musicisti,
fotografi, illustratori, architetti, programmatori, sviluppatori e opinionisti. Un
vero e proprio Movimento che sta cambiando il passato e il presente dell’Africa per
trasportarla nel futuro.
Durante la settimana del Design, la Rinascente presenterà al pubblico e agli
addetti ai lavori le stimolanti visioni futuristiche di creativi, artisti, designer,
sognatori africani. Afrofuture, il programma sperimentale curato da Beatrice
Galilee, vuole stimolare un ambizioso discorso internazionale sul design e dare
voce alle appassionanti nuove conversazioni che stanno esplodendo in ogni angolo
d’Africa. Beatrice Galilee afferma: “Mentre il mondo del design allarga i suoi confini
oltre l’estetica per includere networks, strategie e tattiche inaspettate, l’Africa
diventa un’incalzante voce critica nella conversazione globale. Afrofuture ci farà
immaginare l’Unione Africana come la più potente area economica del
mondo; ci farà sperimentare viaggi spaziali fai-da-te, scimmie biomorfe Kwazulu
militarizzate, una TV di stato Chino-Africana, strumentazioni futuristiche e una
contemporanea pulp fiction.”
Per quattro giorni la Rinascente inviterà addetti ai lavori e clienti a esplorare
Afrofuture. Eventi speciali e performance si impadroniranno del flagship store
dando vita a una versione futuristica del secondo continente più grande del mondo,
ormai pronto a cambiare le regole del gioco globale. Reale o immaginaria, l’ Africa
di oggi ha già abbracciato il mondo di domani. La scrittrice Nana Ocran, che ha
collaborato al progetto, afferma: “Afrofuture getta una luce moderna e pan-africana
su ciò che è, può e potrebbe accadere nel design dentro e fuori i confini dell’ Africa,
stimolando una narrativa ampia e profonda e sperimentando contaminazioni tra
innovatori globali. E’ una piattaforma dinamica pensata per dare impulso al
discorso sul design africano e riflettere su un futuro molto vicino dove
designers rivoluzionari emergeranno dall’underground più radicale conquistando
un ambito globale.”

trailblazers today.

NObody needs to be told that retail has changed; the manner in which
goods are designed, made, distributed and promoted has truly been
revolutionized in the last decade. Online shopping, peer-to-peer
trading and the digital marketplace present a challenge for bricks
-and-mortar stores.

But amongst the challenges Rinascente sees opportunity. “We believe

Beatrice Galilee biography
Beatrice Galilee is a London-based curator, writer, consultant and
lecturer, specialising in the dissemination of critical ideas in
contemporary architecture and design. She is the chief curator
of the 2013 Lisbon Architecture Triennale,’Close, Closer’, director
of The Gopher Hole, architecture contributor at Domus and other
international titles, and associate lecturer at Central St Martins.
She has worked as a curator at 2012 Hacked Milan, 2011 Gwangju
Design Biennale, 2009 Shenzhen Hong Kong Biennale and is the former
architecture editor of Icon Magazine.
Beatrice Galilee vive a Londra; curatrice di mostre, scrittrice,
consulente e docente, è specializzata in critica dell’architettura
contemporanea e del design. E’ la curatrice responsabile di “Close,
Closer” della Triennale di Lisbona 2013, direttrice della galleria The
Gopher Hole; è docente associata alla Central St Martins di Londra
e collabora regolarmente con la rivista Domus e con altre testate
internazionali. Come curatrice Galilee ha lavorato al progetto

Nana Ocran biography
Nana Ocran is a London-based writer and editor specialising in
contemporary African culture. She was Editor-in-Chief for the Time Out
Group’s series of guides to Lagos and Abuja and has consulted on and
established publications on West African culture for the Danish Film
Institute, the Arts Council England and the Institute of International
Visual Arts. She was a nominee for CNN’s African Journalist of the Year
(2011), and regularly writes and researches on the African diaspora.
Nana Ocran vive a Londra, è una scrittrice e una redattrice
specializzata nella cultura Africana contemporanea. E’ stata capo
redattrice delle guide Time Out di Lagos e Abuja. Ocran ha collaborato
con il Danish Film Institute, l’Arts Council England e l’Insitute of
International Visual Arts, offrendo la sua consulenza per varie
pubblicazioni sulla cultura dell’Africa occidentale. Ha ricevuto una
