Fernando Cioni insegna letteratura inglese all’Università di Firenze. E’ stato Folger Library Fellow, Fulbright
Research Scholar alla George Washington University, Francis Bacon Foundation Fellow in Renaissance
Studies, The Huntington Library, San Marino CA, e Bibliographical Society of America Fellow. E’ membro
della Bergen Shakespeare Network, della RSA (Renaissance Society of America), della MLA (Modern
Language Association), e della SSA (Shakespeare Society of America). Ha scritto su Antony and Cleopatra,
The Merchant of Venice, The Winter’s Tale, Pericles, King John, The Taming of the Shrew, Hamlet),
sull’afterlife dei testi Shakespeariani. I suoi saggi, articoli e review article sono stati pubblicati in libri e
riviste (The European Legacy, Assaph, Strumenti Critici, Textus, Merope, Semiotica, Renaissance Quarterly,
and Shakespeare Quarterly). Ha curato, con Keir Elam, A civil conversation (Clueb 2003), e, con Virginia
Mason Vaughan e Jacqueline Bessell, Speaking picture. The visual/verbal nexus of dramatic performance
(Farleigh Dickinson University Press 2010). Ha curato per Rizzoli, con introduzioni e note bibliografiche,
un’edizione in quattro volumi del teatro Shakespeare (Tragedie, 2006, Commedie Romantiche, 2007,
Commedie e drammi romanzeschi, in corso di pubblicazione 2010, e Drammi storici, 2011), e il volume La
sostanza di cui son fatti i sogni. Il grande teatro di William Shakespeare (Rizzoli 2006). Ha collaborato alla
Shakespeare Encyclopedia, curate da Patricia Parker (Greenwoood Press 2010) con le voci “Shakespeare in
Italy”, “Giorgio Melchiori” e voci su attori e registi italiani. Sta lavorando all’edizione critica di A midsummer
night’s dream per la nuova serie bilingue Shakespeare in BUR (2011). Sta lavorando a una biografia
intellettuale di Shakespeare (Liguori 2012) e a un volume dal titolo Jewish characters on the English stage
(1500-1800). E’ general editor della New Variorum Edition di The Taming of the Shrew, che sarà pubblicata
da MLA.
E’ coordinatore, con Nikolay Zakharov, del seminario Shakespeare as a Cultural Catalyst in NonEnglish Speaking Countries, alla prossima International Shakespeare Conference a Stratford, e, con Kent
Cartwright, del seminario “Romantic Comedies”, alla World Shakespeare Conference di Prague nel 2011.

Fernando Cioni, teaches English at the University of Florence. He has been Folger Library Fellow, Fulbright
Research Scholar at George Washington University, Francis Bacon Foundation Fellow in Renaissance
Studies, The Huntington Library, San Marino CA, and Bibliographical Society of America Fellow. He is
member of the Bergen Shakespeare Network, of the RSA (Renaissance Society of America), of the MLA
(Modern Language Association), and of the SSA (Shakespeare Society of America). He has written
extensively on Shakespeare (Antony and Cleopatra, The Merchant of Venice, The Winter’s Tale, Pericles,
King John, The Taming of the Shrew, Hamlet), on Shakespeare’s afterlife. His essays, articles and review
articles have been published in books and journals (The European Legacy, Assaph, Strumenti Critici, Textus,
Merope, Semiotica, Renaissance Quarterly, and Shakespeare Quarterly). He has edited, with Keir Elam, A
civil conversation (Clueb 2003), and, with Virginia Mason Vaughan and Jacqueline Bessell, Speaking picture.

for Rizzoli Publisher, with introductions and bibliographies, a four volume edition of Shakespeare’s plays in
Italian (Tragedie, 2006, Commedie Romantiche, 2007, Commedie e drammi romanzeschi, forthcoming 2010,
and Drammi storici, 2011), and the volume La sostanza di cui son fatti i sogni. Il grande teatro di William
Shakespeare (Rizzoli 2006). He is editing A midsummer night’s dream for Rizzoli bilingual edition of
Shakespeare (forthcoming 2011). He has collaborated to the Shakespeare Encyclopedia edited by Patricia
Parker (Greenwoood Press 2010) with the entries, among the others, on “Shakespeare in Italy” and on
“Giorgio Melchiori”. He is working on an intellectual biography of Shakespeare (Liguori 2012) and on a book
with the provisional title Jewish characters on the English stage (1500-1800). He is general editor of the
New Variorum Edition of The Taming of the Shrew, which will be published by MLA.
He will lead a seminar on Shakespeare as a Cultural Catalyst in Non-English Speaking Countries,
with Nikolay Zakharov, at the next International Shakespeare Conference in Stratford, and a seminar on
“Romantic Comedies”, with Kent Cartwright, at the World Shakespeare Conference in Prague in 2011.
