INTENSE DEBUT BY NORWAY’S NEW OPERA DIVA
Critics rightfully have called soprano Eli Kristin Hanssveen “the
new opera diva”. Her spectacular voice has been the catalyst
for a steadily rising career, and she is known for her unique
charisma and acting talent.
In 2002 she made her opera debut at the Norwegian National
Opera and Ballet, where she has been soloist since 2010. In
recent seasons her leading roles have included Rigoletto
(Gilda), Die Zauberflöte (Königin der Nacht), Don Pasquale
(Norina), Ariadne auf Naxos (Zerbinetta), Jorden rundt på 80
dager (Violetta/Månen), Die schweigsame Frau (Aminta), Die
Fledermaus (Adele), and Peer Gynt (Solveig).
With Sempre libera, her first solo recording as opera singer, Eli
Kristin wishes to communicate something of the same intensity
and spontaneity that the audience experiences during a
performance. We are introduced to a number of strong women
characters through a varied and discriminating selection of
arias from some of music history’s most exciting operas.
Joining Eli Kristin on this album is the long-established Opera
Orchestra conducted by John Fiore, since 2009 Music Director
of the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet. He has conducted at
a number of distinguished opera houses, among them the
Metropolitan Opera, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the
Bavarian State Opera, the Dresden State Opera, the Geneva
Opera, and the Prague National Theatre.
The Opera Orchestra, with roots all the way back to 1827, has
flourished since moving to the new Opera House at Bjørvika.
Under John Fiore’s leadership, the orchestra has found new
artistic challenges, and they, in turn, have elevated the quality
significantly and made the orchestra an independent artistic
entity.
