Milan, 26 January 2016 – miart 2016 is on its way, with the 21st edition of the international fair
of modern and contemporary art of Milan, organized by Fiera Milano and directed by
Vincenzo de Bellis, with vice-director Alessandro Rabottini. This year the event offers many
new developments and increasingly prestigious collaborations.
THE GALLERIES
From 7 to 10 April the pavilions of fieramilanocity will welcome 154 international galleries,
once again representing the best of modern and contemporary art and limited-edition
design, from 16 countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland,
Italy, Japan, Korea, Norway, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, United States, Uruguay). The
galleries have been chosen for the high quality of their exhibition projects, by a selection
committee, from over 350 applications.
Many important international galleries are returning after participating in previous years,
including Alfonso Artiaco (Naples), Gavin Brown's Enterprise (New York), C L E A R I N G (New
York - Brussels), Cardi (London - Milan), Sadie Coles HQ (London), Continua (San Gimignano Beijing - Les Moulins - Havana), Massimo De Carlo (Milan - London), Dépendance (Brussels),

Marconi (Milan), Massimo Minini (Brescia), Office Baroque (Brussels), Robilant+Voena (London

THE SECTIONS OF MIART
A new feature of this 21st edition is the Decades section, which with its nine galleries offers an
itinerary through the 20th century decade by decade. Decades outlines a narrative that
emphasizes the two spirits of miart – modern and contemporary – with particular emphasis on
high-quality historic art in a moment of great interest on the international market in the art of the
period after World War II, particularly in Italy.
Decades joins the four sections that have been parts of miart since 2013: Established, with
99 exhibitors – subdivided into the subsections Master, for galleries presenting historically
acclaimed artists, and Contemporary, for galleries specializing in contemporary work;
Emergent, on 16 international galleries concentrating on the research of the younger
generations, including 11 foreign galleries; THENnow, which features 8 pairs of galleries that
join forces to trigger dialogue between one historic artist and one from a more recent
generation; and, finally, Object, with a selection of 14 galleries active in the promotion of
contemporary design objects created in limited editions and approached as works of art.

MIART: AN EVENT IN THE INTERNATIONAL FOREGROUND
“Miart is a successful project, recognized on an international level, rapidly growing on the
worldwide art fair scene – says Corrado Peraboni, CEO of Fiera Milano. – The many
prestigious galleries taking part bear witness to the central role played by miart in the art world,
together with Milan. Thanks to the renewed collaboration with the City and the Department of
Culture, once again miart will provide an important center for cultural exchange. A vision –
Peraboni adds – firmly shared by the sponsors as well, the partners of miart and Fondazione
Fiera Milano, which this year offers even more support, doubling the contribution of the
“Giampiero Cantoni” acquisition fund from 50,000 to 100,000 euros.”

MILAN: ITALY’S NEW CULTURAL CAPITAL
“Milan confirms its role as one of the most important international hubs for appreciation of
creative thinking, and as an ideal city for the production of contemporary art, which finds fertile

of the avant-garde – says the Alderman of Culture Filippo Del Corno. – The city
accompanies miart, a gathering place for the world of contemporary creativity, with a program of
events that widen the perspective on the main Milanese cultural initiatives, putting the spotlight
on exhibitions currently in progress, special openings and evening events.”

MIART AND MILAN
Miart 2016 renews and increases the close collaboration launched in the latest editions with the
realities operating in the city for the promotion and knowledge of art. Working with the City of
Milan, miart leads the way during contemporary art week, which includes a program of events,
openings and special visiting hours involving public institutions, foundations and private
galleries, starting on 5 April, throughout the period of the fair. Every day there are special visits
and openings, starting with the 21st Milan Triennale – “21st Century. Design After Design”
– which will be held in many public and private institutional spaces around the city. There will
also be openings at Palazzo Reale of the retrospective on Studio Azzurro and at
HangarBicocca for the solo show by Carsten Höller, the opening of the second exhibition at
Fondazione Carriero and of the new FM Center for Contemporary Art of Frigoriferi Milanesi,
special opening times for the city at Fondazione Prada, special visits to the exhibitions in
progress at Palazzo Reale – 2050 and the shows on Umberto Boccioni and Symbolism – the
exhibition of the winning artist of the Premio Acacia at Museo del Novecento, special hours
with guided visits at PAC, GAM, Palazzo della Ragione and MUDEC, and a thousand other
appointments the city is presently preparing, clearly reviving Milan’s role as a capital of
contemporary creativity and moving forward with the energy and vitality ignited in the city by
Expo 2015.

reality by now, have always been dialogue between artists of different generations,

MIARTALKS
In continuity with the three previous editions, a new cycle of miartalks will accompany the three
days when the fair is open to the public. Produced in collaboration with In Between Art Film
– the production house for artists’ films and experimental video founded by Beatrice Bulgari –
and with coordination by Ben Borthwick, artistic director of the Plymouth Arts Centre (Plymouth,
UK), the new cycle of miartalks will be a platform of lectures, conversations and interviews
involving over 40 outstanding international personalities including curators, artists, directors
of museums and film festivals, collectors, filmmakers, choreographers and producers invited to
explore the ongoing dialogue between the world of the visual arts and those of
experimental cinema, music, video, theater and dance.

PRIZES AND ACQUISITIONS
The range of prizes and acquisition funds connected with miart continues to expand.
Alongside the Giampiero Cantoni Acquisition Fund of Fondazione Fiera Milano – which
doubles this year, from 50,000 to 100,000 euro for the acquisition of works of modern and
contemporary art that will contribute to form the collection of Fondazione Fiera Milano – there is
also the return of the Emergent Prize – for the best emerging gallery – the Premio Rotary
Club Milano Brera for contemporary art and young artists, and the Premio Herno, in
collaboration with Herno SpA, which for the second year will be assigned to the booth with the
best exhibition project.

VIP PROGRAM
The VIP program is more intense than ever, welcoming 200 international guests, including
collectors, sector professionals and museum directors, who can take part in a program of
special openings during the days of the fair, and take advantage of a series of visits to the most
interesting private collections in Milan and vicinity.
PARTNERS
The partnerships that have accompanied miart since 2013 continue, with the 3 Michelin-star
restaurant “Da Vittorio” and Ruinart Champagne for the VIP Lounge, the Westin Palace Milan
hotel for hospitality, and Moroso for the furnishings of the spaces of the fair. Miart 2016 will also
be the showcase for the new edition of the Menabrea Art Prize. This year also features
continuation of the partnership with Sky Arte HD, with which miart will create an original format
to be broadcast immediately prior to the fair.

8 – 10 April 2016
In collaboration with the production house In Between Art Film, the miartalks 2016 bring together
over 40 international artists, curators, filmmakers, directors of institutions, writers and
professionals active in the field of the visual and performing arts, to discuss how time-based
artistic practices are redefining the boundaries of contemporary art. The miartalks 2016 are a crossdisciplinary forum to explore the constantly moving dialogue between the worlds of art, film,
music, theater and performance.
“The collaboration of miart with In Between Art Film – says Vincenzo de Bellis, Director of miart
2016 – enriches the miartalks program with new content of very high quality, after the last three
editions involving over 150 international personalities during the fair, which have helped to make
miart a leading worldwide event. This year the idea of transforming the miartalks into a thematic
platform that approaches the disciplinary interactions between the various languages of the arts is
the result of intense dialogue between Beatrice Bulgari and Alessandro Rabottini, Vice-Director of
the fair, demonstrating that the interest and importance of an appointment like miart lie in its ability to
work with outstanding counterparts on original, ambitious projects with a high potential for cultural
innovation.”
“I have approached this new collaboration with miart for the fourth edition of the miartalks with great
enthusiasm – says Beatrice Bulgari, founder of In Between Art Film – as an increasingly innovativ
event that makes dialogue and artistic research its strong points, sharing with In Between Art Film
the mission of exploring the intriguing and increasingly blurred boundaries between the arts. For
some time now artists have been challenging disciplinary barriers, rejecting categories, influencing
each other and giving rise to new hybrids. This is why it is urgent to reflect on these themes today: it

PRIZES AND ACQUISITIONS
“Giampiero Cantoni” Acquisition Fund of Fondazione Fiera Milano
Acquisition fund for works of modern and contemporary art to form the collection of Fondazione Fiera
Milano. This year the fund doubles in size: from 50,000 € set aside in the past, Fondazione Fiera
Milano has increased the annual fund to 100,000 € with which to acquire works exhibited at miart.

CARNET DE MIART

After the positive experience of the last edition, miart again presents, for 2016, Carnet de miart, the
official online magazine of the fair that previews the themes of the event during the months prior to
the opening.
The object of Carnet de miart is to offer a space for debate and discussion around themes like
production, conservation and circulation of art, with a particular focus on the context of the fair and its
main protagonists.
This year the magazine has an updated design and has been organized to more directly address
what will happen inside fieramilanocity from 7 to 10 April 2016. The content of the digital publication
is closely linked to that of the fair, and each issue will take a specific section of miart as its starting
point.
There will also be more coverage of the city of Milan and its cultural offerings, and the new video
channel “Windows of miart” will offer a glimpse behind the scenes of the advertising campaign
(created by Mousse), while at the same time providing video interviews with artists, curators,
collectors and cultural critics.
All the contents are divided into five sections:
> “editors' desk”, a column produced by the editorial staff of Carnet de miart, presenting a different
section of the fair in each issue;
> “in conversation”, a contribution (editorial, critical text, visual essay) conceived and prepared by
the curator of the section covered in that issue;
> “about town”, a column on Milan with in-depth coverage, reviews and previews of the exhibitions
and the most remarkable art spaces and cultural centers of the city;
> “windows of miart”, a new video channel for teasers, backstage footage and interviews with the
protagonists inside and outside the fair;
> “miart wallpapers”, a series of images based on the 2016 campaign of miart, specially redesigned
by Mousse for the readers of Carnet de miart. All the images can be downloaded and used as
desktop wallpaper.
Carnet de miart has been produced thanks to Studiolabo, a Milanese company with over ten years of
experience in the development of solutions for consulting, design and graphic implementation in the
fields of design and communication.

CONTEMPORARY ART WEEK IN MILAN
A program of events, openings and special hours, more varied than ever before, in museums and
public and private institutions around Milan, to accompany the 21st edition of miart, gathering the
leading players in the city under the coordination of the municipality. A true contemporary art week,
which from Tuesday the 5th to Sunday the 10th of April will offer a succession of not-to-bemissed appointments for sector professionals and the entire audience that will gather in Milan for the
fair.

After Gauguin, MUDEC continues its program on artists who have investigated the primitivism of extraEuropean Cultures, with an exhibition on Miró. With over 100 works, the exhibition itinerary focuses on the
importance of the use of materials in the artist’s work.
Free opening and free guided visits to the permanent collection and the exhibition “Italians on the
Ocean. Stories of artists in modern and native Brazil in the mid-1900s” curated by Paolo Rusconi with
Elisa Camesasca, Ana Magalhães, Viviana Pozzoli, Marco Rinaldi in collaboration with the staff of
MUDEC.
Through the works and documents of Pietro Maria Bardi, Lina Bo Bardi, Margherita Sarfatti, Gastone
Novelli and Roberto Sambonet, the exhibition explores knowledge of the relations between Italian and
Brazilian artistic culture across the 20th century, in dialogue with the Amazon collection of MUDEC
donated by the physician and traveler Aldo Lo Curto.

For the centennial of the death of Umberto Boccioni (1882-1916), Milan pays homage to the artist with an
exhibition based on collaboration between Castello Sforzesco, Museo del Novecento and Palazzo Reale.
Over 250 works, including drawings, paintings, sculptures, etchings, period photographs, books,
magazines and documents, with an exceptional body of 60 drawings by Boccioni of Castello Sforzesco,
together with recently rediscovered writings and documents. /

The exhibition gathers about 150 works, including paintings, sculptures and exceptional decorative art

2050. A Brief History of the Future

The exhibition takes its name from the book by Jacques Attali, published in 2006, in which the author
hypothesizes the future of the world and our society. Previously presented at the Musées Royaux des
Beaux-Arts de Belgique in Brussels, the group show retraces the themes illustrated in Attali’s essay in
eight sections, through about 50 works by international contemporary artists.

Museo del Novecento presents Bora by Yuri Ancarani, the work produced by AMACI and Mibact for the
third edition of the “Museo chiama artista” project, focusing on new works by contemporary artists.
Ancarani has made a video-sculpture, in progress since
2011, based on dialogue and interaction between sculpture, moving images and sound.

The first large retrospective in Milan of the work of Herb Ritts, creator of the most incisive, dreamy and
perfect images of the Hollywood star system, whose portraits have fueled the myths of personalities like

Greece, Renaissance art and the formal composition of the photography of the early 20th century.
