Un’esperienza di formazione teologica nel cuore di Roma
Pensare, amare, sperare
L’Istituto Superiore di Scienze Religiose Mater Ecclesiae è collegato,
secondo la normativa della Congregazione per l’Educazione Cattolica,con
la Facoltà di Teologia della Pontificia Università San Tommaso
(Angelicum) di Roma, fin dall’anno 1964. Le sue origini risalgono ad oltre
un secolo fa.
È una scuola di formazione teologica dove ci si allena a pensare la fede.
È ‘palestra’ di riflessione, in cui ci si propone di mettere in pratica
l’intellectus (intus-legere) fidei, sapendo che l’esperienza del credere in
Dio e in Gesù Cristo suscita domande e accende il bisogno di un di più di
conoscenza (di sé, del mondo, di Dio).
Questo ‘pensare’ la fede non è staccato dall’amore per Dio, anzi, ne è
conseguenza. Nell’esperienza cristiana, conoscenza e amore si fecondano
a vicenda: proprio perché amato e proprio perché decisivo per la vita, il
Dio vivo e vero ‘provoca’ un desiderio di approfondimento della Sua
identità. “Chi ama capisce che l’amore è un’esperienza di verità, che esso
stesso apre i nostri occhi per vedere tutta la realtà in modo nuovo, in
unione con la persona amata. (...). La ragione credente e l’amore ...
diventano un solo occhio per giungere a contemplare Dio” (PAPA
FRANCESCO, Lumen fidei, 27).
La teologia è anche sostegno della speranza del credente; è stimolo a
proiettarsi con coraggio verso il futuro. È allenarsi a ‘sognare ad occhi
aperti’, sapendo che Dio vuole il bene dell’uomo. In un mondo e in una
storia troppe volte fasciati di sofferenza e di morte, la teologia aiuta a
riscoprire nella debolezza della croce di Cristo Risorto la forza che dà
sostegno al cammino, che irrobustisce l’impegno, che aiuta a camminare a
testa alta, con cuore sereno e in solidarietà con i fratelli, verso l’avvenire.
Infine, poiché l’impegno a pensare, amare, sperare viene necessariamente
esercitato in sintonia con i luoghi e i tempi (hic et nunc) in cui i credenti
vivono l’esperienza umana e religiosa, l’Istituto Mater Ecclesiae è sempre
attento a una duplice esigenza: da una parte, per il fatto di essere
collocato nella città di Roma, consentire ai suoi studenti un’esperienza
forte dell’unità e della cattolicità della Chiesa; ciò comporta la necessità
di dare un respiro universale all’attività di formazione. D’altra parte,
l’essere a Roma significa trovarsi in un ambiente culturalmente ricco, con
il quale è necessario rapportarsi. Perciò il Mater Ecclesiae si interessa di
tematiche religiose e culturali attuali o di frontiera, al fine di favorire la

reciproca conoscenza fra i cristiani, fra questi e gli appartenenti alle altre
religioni, fra i credenti e le persone che sono alla ricerca della verità. Non
a caso, oltre ai corsi previsti per la formazione dei religiosi, delle
religiose, dei catechisti, degli operatori pastorali, vengono proposti Corsi
di formazione permanente e/o di aggiornamento teologico-pastorale, o
a carattere interculturale o interreligioso.
Un’ulteriore riflessione si ispira alla storia del Mater Ecclesiae. Da essa
derivano due caratteristiche, non secondarie: una prolungata esperienza
didattico/accademica, in sintonia con gli standard universitari europei; una
speciale attenzione a Tommaso d’Aquino, indicato sia dal Concilio
Vaticano II, sia dal Magistero pontificio, quale prezioso e fecondo
riferimento per quanti sono impegnati a comprendere la verità rivelata al
servizio dell’uomo e della storia.
L’Istituto Superiore di Scienze Religiose Mater Ecclesiae accoglie le
sollecitazioni di una società multietnica e propone lo studio delle varie
discipline con una particolare attenzione al dialogo ecumenico,
interculturale e interreligioso. Anche per questo motivo, oltre alla sezione
italiana, nell’anno accademico 2005/2006 è stata attivata una sezione in
lingua inglese per rispondere alla domanda di varie Congregazioni
religiose che chiedono uno studio di base biblico-teologico-ﬁlosoﬁco
come prezioso contributo alla formazione delle giovani che provengono
da Paesi diversi.
Un’ultima considerazione. Gli studenti iscritti al Mater Ecclesiae,
ordinariamente, provengono da 40 Nazioni; la maggiore parte di essi è
costituita da Religiose che - come ci ha mostrato la storia passata e recente
- saranno impegnate in compiti di alto profilo ecclesiale (Superiore
Generali, Formatrici, Responsabili di Comunità, Direttrici di opere
apostoliche di particolare rilievo). Ciò significa che, grazie agli studenti
del Mater Ecclesiae, l’Angelicum conferma ed estende la propria missione
universale.

PIANO GENERALE DEGLI STUDI1
Il piano degli studi prevede un curriculum della durata di cinque anni,
organizzato in due cicli:
a)
il primo ciclo dura 3 anni e conferisce il titolo di
BACCALAUREATO IN SCIENZE RELIGIOSE (=Laurea).
Prevede:
 la frequenza di corsi e il superamento degli esami previsti dal
piano di studi;
 la conoscenza di una lingua straniera;
 un esame conclusivo (sintetico) e la discussione di una
dissertazione scritta;
b)
il secondo ciclo dura 2 anni e conferisce la LICENZA IN
SCIENZE RELIGIOSE (=Laurea Magistrale).
Prevede:
 la frequenza di corsi e il superamento degli esami previsti dal
piano di studi;
 la conoscenza di una seconda lingua straniera;
 la discussione di una dissertazione scritta.
Quest’ultimo grado accademico (Licenza) è riconosciuto sia dallo Stato
italiano (per l’insegnamento della Religione Cattolica nella scuola
secondaria), sia da altri Stati. La Licenza in Scienze Religiose consente,
inoltre, il proseguimento degli studi presso Facoltà o Istituti ecclesiastici
per il conseguimenti di altri gradi accademici, secondo le norme stabilite
dalla Congregazione per l’Educazione Cattolica.
L’Istituto offre anche un CORSO PER FORMATORI, organizzato in
collaborazione con l’Istituto di Spiritualità della PUST.

INDIRIZZI DEL II CICLO - LICENZA (120 ECTS)
1) pedagogico-didattico: qualifica per l’insegnamento della religione
cattolica nella scuola;
2) teologico-ecumenico-interreligioso: consente l’approfondimento
teologico nella prospettiva del dialogo ecumenico.
3) liturgico-pastorale-ministeriale: prepara i diaconi permanenti, i ministri
straordinari, gli operatori pastorali per i vari servizi ecclesiali (catechismo,
liturgia, animazione di gruppi), i formatori/formatrici3.
Al momento dell’iscrizione al terzo anno del Baccalaureato lo/la
studente sceglie uno dei tre indirizzi di specializzazione.

NORME SPECIALI DELL’ISTITUTO
ORARIO DELLE LEZIONI
Le lezioni sono pomeridiane (dal lunedì al venerdì, dalle 14,30 alle
18,45).
Sono previsti iter individualizzati con assistenza di tutor.
Gli studenti che, per inderogabili impegni di lavoro, non possono
frequentare assiduamente le lezioni di tutti i corsi, per essere esentati in
parte dall’obbligo di frequenza, devono presentarne domanda scritta alla
valutazione del Preside. La domanda va inoltrata entro il 10 Novembre,
allegando idonea documentazione.
ESAMI
La votazione di ogni esame è espressa in trentesimi. L’esame si ritiene
superato se lo Studente ottiene la votazione minima di 18/30. In caso di
esami particolarmente brillanti, al voto massimo di 30/30 può essere
aggiunta la Lode.
Al termine degli esami lo Studente firma il Verbale d’Esame ed ottiene
la registrazione del voto sullo Statone con relativa acquisizione dei
crediti/ECTS.
RIPETIZIONE DEGLI ESAMI
In caso l’esame non venga superato, esso potrà essere nuovamente
sostenuto nelle altre Sessioni d’Esame dello stesso Anno Accademico o
degli A.A. successivi. Non è consentito allo Studente sostenere
nuovamente un esame già superato.

ESAME SINTETICO FINALE
L’Esame Sintetico Finale viene sostenuto sulla base di tre temi di
discipline estratte da un elenco di cinque nuclei tematici attinenti ai corsi
frequentati dallo studente. I temi sono estratti una settimana prima in
Segreteria. L’esame consiste in un colloquio durante il quale il candidato
espone sinteticamente ciascun argomento e risponde alle domande
rivoltegli dai membri della Commissione giudicante, composta dal Preside
o Vice Preside dell’Istituto e da docenti delle discipline estratte.

CONSIGLIO
All’inizio di ogni Anno Accademico gli Studenti eleggono due
Rappresentanti, uno per la sezione Italiana e uno per la sezione Inglese,
scelti tra gli Studenti Ordinari regolarmente in corso ovvero, in regola con
il curriculum di studi. I Rappresentanti durano in carica un anno e sono
rieleggibili.
ASSEMBLEA GENERALE DEGLI STUDENTI
Gli Studenti possono riunirsi in Assemblea Generale nelle ore di lezione
non più di quattro volte per ogni Anno Accademico.
Per convocare l’Assemblea Generale i Rappresenti degli Studenti debbono
farne per tempo richiesta al Preside, allegando l’Ordine del Giorno degli
argomenti da discutere.
Una volta ottenuta l’autorizzazione, sarà cura dei Rappresentanti
convocare l’Assemblea, ricorrendo anche agli avvisi in Bacheca.
Le riunioni sono autogestite e non potranno superare la durata di 30
minuti ciascuna, da ripartire tra la lezione che precede e quella che segue.
VISITE D’ISTRUZIONE
Annualmente i Rappresentanti degli Studenti propongono al Preside una
visita d’istruzione della durata di uno o più giorni e provvedono alla
relativa sua organizzazione.

ORIENTAMENTI E NORME PER CONSEGUIRE I TITOLI
ACCADEMICI
A. BACCALAUREATO IN SCIENZE RELIGIOSE (= Laurea)
Gli Studenti ordinari che intendono conseguire il B ACCALAUREATO IN
SCIENZE RELIGIOSE devono redigere, sotto la guida di un Docente, un
lavoro scritto di 30/50 pagine (Tesina) o altro elaborato.
B. LICENZA IN SCIENZE RELIGIOSE (= Laurea Magistrale)
Gli Studenti ordinari che intendono conseguire la LICENZA IN SCIENZE
RELIGIOSE devono redigere, sotto la guida di un Docente, un lavoro
scritto di 80/100 pagine (Tesi) in cui si dimostri maturità intellettuale,
teologica e pedagogica, capacità di trattare scientificamente l’argomento
esaminato, sensibilità didattica e pastorale.
Per la redazione delle Tesi gli Studenti dovranno ritirare in Segreteria il
regolamento sulle Norme Metodologiche.
ITER COMUNE AD ENTRAMBI I GRADI ACCADEMICI
Gli studenti devono:
1.
avere ottemperato a quanto previsto dal curriculum degli studi;
2.
discutere la Tesi davanti ad una Commissione di Docenti. La
discussione avrà una durata di circa 45 minuti.
Per essere ammessi agli Esami di Baccalaureato o di Licenza, gli
studenti devono presentare in Segreteria, entro i termini stabiliti dal
Calendario Accademico:
a)
proposta dell’argomento della Tesi (su apposito modulo fornito dalla
Segreteria) indirizzata al Preside, indicante il tema della
dissertazione. Tale domanda deve essere firmata dal Docente che
guiderà il candidato nello svolgimento del lavoro;
b)
domanda di Ammissione all'Esame di Baccalaureato o di Licenza,

indirizzata al Preside. La domanda deve essere preceduta dallo Stato
di avanzata elaborazione con la quale il Docente, sotto la cui direzione i candidati svolgono la dissertazione scritta, attesta che
quest’ultima è sufficientemente avanzata per essere ultimata entro il
termine prescritto. Il titolo della dissertazione, risultante su questo
ultimo documento, non può essere modificato. I moduli si ritirano in
Segreteria;
c)
quattro copie rilegate della dissertazione, di cui una con copertina
rigida. Una delle copie deve essere l’originale accompagnata da CD.
Le copie devono essere controfirmate dal candidato e dal Relatore.
Le copie vanno consegnate in Segreteria almeno 30 giorni prima
dell’inizio delle sessioni di esame.

AVVERTENZE
1. Nessun candidato potrà essere ammesso all'esame di Baccalaureato o
di Licenza, se non avrà rispettato le date di scadenza pubblicate sul
Calendario Accademico.

2. I candidati che intendono conseguire il titolo di Baccalaureato o di
Licenza devono avere portato a termine tutti gli esami almeno 15 giorni
prima dell'inizio delle sedute di discussione delle Tesi.
BIBLIOTECA
Per lo studio e per il lavoro scientifico gli studenti ordinari e straordinari
si avvalgono della Biblioteca dell’Istituto nonché della Biblioteca della
Pontificia Università San Tommaso.
La Biblioteca dell’Università osserva il seguente orario di apertura:

Il I Anno, attraverso la particolare accentuazione delle scienze umane e della
filosofia, è ordinato a dare agli studenti una sintesi organica dei grandi problemi
dell’uomo e a fornire i principi di valutazione critica particolarmente necessari
nell’odierno contesto culturale. La formazione di una mentalità filosofica di
base viene ritenuta, infatti, condizione essenziale per affrontare con equilibrio e
maturità di giudizio lo studio teologico. Allo stesso tempo, le scienze umane

Il metodo storico-comparativo si è formato principalmente in base allo
studio delle culture antiche ed etnologiche, per aprirsi sempre più ai
dinamismi religiosi imposti dalla globalizzazione odierna. Muovendo
dall’arte preistorica, il corso intende ripercorrere le linee di sviluppo
che dai politeismi e dagli umanesimi euro-asiatici giungono a spiegare
permanenze e innovazioni, fino alle più recenti forme di creatività
spirituale.

Il Pentateuco e i libri narrativi dell’AT sono la testimonianza scritta
delle opere liberatrici di Dio per mezzo delle quali egli si rivela a un
popolo e lo chiama ad essere portatore di questa rivelazione. Il corso
propone di prendere in esame questi libri, percorrendone i temi più
rilevanti sullo sfondo della storia e delle istituzioni dell’antico Israele.
Comprenderà una introduzione ai metodi esegetici, diacronici e
sincronici, adoperati nello studio di questi testi al fine di poter

tracciare la loro genesi e sviluppo, e comprendere il significato e la
modalità della loro recezione presso le antiche comunità di fede.
Brani chiave verranno sottoposti ad un esame più dettagliato in modo
da illustrare i vari modi di accostamento al testo sacro.

Il corso si propone di abilitare gli studenti a cogliere il nesso tra
pedagogia ed educazione, a saper individuare i diversi percorsi
conoscitivi con cui la teoresi pedagogica approccia il suo oggetto, a
riconoscere i dinamismi specifici delle diverse componenti strutturali
della persona e le loro implicazioni di carattere educativo. I contenuti
del corso si baseranno sulla chiarificazione del concetto di educazione
e la sua naturale connessione con quello di educabilità come specifico
umano, sulle differenti modalità di approccio all’educativo, sull’analisi
della realtà persona, sullo studio di alcuni tra i più importanti modelli
educativi, sull’esperienza del dolore come momento edificante.

La presenza di un movimento profetico nel Medio Oriente
Antico e in particolare le scuole profetiche in Israele:
analogie e differenze.
La missione del “profeta” in seno al popolo eletto e la sua
presenza nelle istituzioni d’Israele.
I vari generi letterari presenti negli scritti profetici.

I profeti scrittori : i 4 maggiori (Isaia, Geremia, Ezechiele e

Il corso intende offrire un coerente ordine cronologico della vita e
dell’azione dei singoli profeti nella storia d’Israele, con una
presentazione letteraria e teologica del loro messaggio.
Una
particolare attenzione sarà riservata ad Elia, Amos e Osea, (profeti del
Regno del Nord); Per il Regno del Sud : ad Isaia, a Michea, a Geremia
e Ezechiele per il periodo dell’esilio con una particolare attenzione al
II Isaia; quindi ai profeti del dopo esilio Babilonese.

Nell’orizzonte storico del declino delle ideologie e della nascita di un
pensiero economico, la Dottrina Sociale della Chiesa si interroga sulle
questioni sociali, culturali e spirituali ed indica nella centralità della
persona, nel bene comune e nei diritti umani e nella solidarietà, i
fondamenti di una corretta visione dell’uomo e del suo progetto sociale.
La dottrina sociale della Chiesa non è un’ideologia né una teoria
economica o politica: essa deriva dalla teologia morale ed ha dei solidi
fondamenti teologici e filosofici, ma fa anche uso delle scienze umane e

sociali per ottenere una completa analisi della realtà, al fine di guidare il
fedele verso un autentico comportamento cristiano.
Il corso di Dottrina Sociale della Chiesa, riguarda le origini e lo
sviluppo della Dottrina (Sacra Scrittura, Padri della Chiesa e Magistero),
con una particolare attenzione ai temi attuali della globalizzazione e del

BIENNIO DI SPECIALIZZAZIONE – SPECIALIZATION BIENNIUM
Il Biennio di Specializzazione propone tre indirizzi:



pedagogico-didattico;
teologico-ecumenico e dialogo interreligioso;
liturgico, pastorale-catechetico e per formatori.
Il programma di studio, in italiano e in inglese, comprende discipline
fondamentali comuni ai tre indirizzi e le discipline caratterizzanti
l’indirizzo prescelto. Le discipline comuni riflettono la scelta formativa
specifica dell’Istituto, da sempre attento a temi della pedagogia
intersoggettiva, del dialogo ecumenico, interreligioso e dell’intercultura.
Il secondo anno prevede un piano di studio personalizzato elaborato
dallo studente sulla base dell’indirizzo scelto e approvato dal Preside.
Con i corsi opzionali, i seminari, il laboratorio e il tirocinio teorico e
pratico, lo studente completa la sua formazione personale applicata
all’indirizzo prescelto.
È obbligatorio includere nel Piano di Studi i corsi specializzanti del
proprio indirizzo, ma è possibile anche scegliere corsi di altro indirizzo.
È obbligatorio, inoltre, partecipare almeno ad un laboratorio
didattico, testare l’abilità informatica e la conoscenza di una seconda
lingua straniera.
Durante il biennio si devono totalizzare complessivamente 120
ECTS secondo la tabella di attribuzione data dalla Commissione Didattica
ad ogni disciplina, alle altre attività formative, alla tesi.
Lo studente nel compilare e consegnare il Piano di Studio, all’inizio
del Primo Anno, includerà i corsi comuni, i corsi caratterizzanti l’indirizzo
prescelto, un corso opzionale, seminari, laboratori didattici, il tirocinio,
fino a totalizzare complessivamente 120 ECTS. Potrà modificare il Piano
di Studio nell’anno successivo, pertanto si impegna solo per gli
insegnamenti indicati nell’anno di presentazione.
I moduli per la compilazione del Piano di Studi, con le relative
istruzioni, sono rilasciati in Segreteria al momento dell’iscrizione.

The Specialization Biennium offers three sections:



pedagogical-didactical;
teological-ecumenical and interreligious dialogue;
liturgical, pastoral-catechetical and for formators.
The programme of study, both in Italian and English, includes some
fundamental subjects common to the three courses, besides the subjects
distinguishing the section. The common subjects highlight the peculiarity
of the Institute, always attentive to themes such as intersubjective
pedagogy, ecumenical and interreligious dialogue and interculture.
The second year foresees a customized plan of study on the basis of
the selected section and approved by the President.
With optional courses, seminars, laboratories and/or teaching
practice, students complete their personal education according to the
selected course of study.
Students are expected to include in their Plan of Study the
specializing subjects of the selected course of study, but they are also
allowed to choose subjects of another course of studies, if they need to
gain credits.
Students are also expected to take part to one teaching laboratory at
least, to test their computer ability and their command of a second foreign
language.
During the biennium students are required to reach a total of 120
ECTS in all according to the attribution table given by the Teaching Board
to every subject, to the other educational activities, to the thesis.
Students, when drawing up and handing in their Plan of Studies, at
the beginning of the First Year, will include the common subjects, the
subjects characterizing the selected course of study, one optional course,
the seminars, the teaching laboratories, the teaching practice till they reach
120 ECTS in all. They will be able to modify their Plan of Study in the
subsequent year, so they commit themselves only for the subjects chosen
in the year of submission.

PEDAGOGIA INTERCULTURALE (24 ore)
Il corso si soffermerà su alcuni aspetti fondanti teorici della
pedagogia interculturale ovvero le sfide che pone la diversità culturale
in tempo di globalizzazione, considerando in particolare i vettori della
diversità culturale ossia le lingue, l’educazione, la comunicazione e i
contenuti culturali, la creatività.
Ci si soffermerà poi sui presupposti e le modalità del dialogo
interculturale, considerando in particolare gli ostacoli al dialogo
ovvero gli stereotipi e l’intolleranza.
Per quanto riguarda gli aspetti pratici, questi si coglieranno
soprattutto attraverso il testo di don Milani, nella misura in cui l’opera
si centra sul problema dell’offerta di pari opportunità a persone
diverse.
La recensione di un libro offrirà allo studente l’opportunità di
approfondire i molteplici aspetti legati alle problematiche identitarie,
fonte di molti conflitti in ambito multiculturale.

Il corso mira a far acquisire allo studente consapevolezza circa la
struttura e la funzione della filosofia dell’educazione, a sensibilizzare
gli studenti alla comprensione dell’agire educativo e alle sue leggi
specifiche, ad introdurre agli scritti di maestri autorevoli che hanno
tematizzato il rapporto dialettico tra libertà e legami per la costruzione
dell’umano nell’uomo. I contenuti del corso riguarderanno gli aspetti
che collocano la filosofia dell’educazione nel contesto dei saperi
riguardanti l’uomo in quanto soggetto educabile, l’analisi del rapporto
libertà e legami, la lettura di pagine appartenti a grandi autori
dell’umano che hanno affrontato il problema della libertà e dei legami,
l’approccio educativo alla realtà dell’agire interiore ed esteriore, il
rapporto virtù umananti e consumismo, l’inserimento qualificato nella
convivenza.

singolare: “lasciando parlare Dio, e Lui soltanto!”. Il pensiero
barthianosegna l’inizio di una riflessione preoccupata non tanto delle
esigenze della teologia ‘scientifica’, ma di quelle deipastori, per i quali
l’annuncio della Parola era diventato problematico.Inoltre, con la
propria proposta,Barthmette in atto una vera e propria valorizzazione

QUESTIONI ATTUALI DI ANTROPOLOGIA
PAROLA, SILENZIO E SCRITTURA (24 ore)
Il corso muove dalle problematiche attuali della comunicazione e
soprattutto dalla necessità di dare spessore e profondità alle parole, al
dialogo e alle relazioni umane. A partire da alcuni apporti filosofici
contemporanei (Derrida, Marion, Levinas, Chrétien, Nancy, Falque,
Agamben…) e a partire dall'ispirazione della Rivelazione, si
approfondisce l'intreccio tra parola, silenzio e scrittura.
In tale intreccio emerge un orizzonte di umanità che rompe con il
primato del soggetto e della coscienza chiusa in se stessa. La parola
emerge come suono prima che per il suo rinvio a un significato; il
silenzio apre all’esperienza muta del corpo, agli affetti, all’accoglienza
dell’altro; la scrittura manifesta la sua povertà e attesa di prendere
corpo ma, allo stesso tempo, apre a un appello e a un dono iscritti nel
cuore dell'esistenza. L’intreccio parola-silenzio-scrittura, mentre ridà
spessore di umanità alla comunicazione, apre anche al luogo dove si
ode una parola altra, una Parola di Dio, se è vero che Dio parla
all’uomo con parole umane (cf. DV 18: «Le parole di Dio, infatti,
espresse con lingue umane, si sono fatte simili al linguaggio degli
uomini, come già il Verbo dell’eterno Padre, avendo assunto le
debolezze della umana natura, si fece simile agli uomini»).

Il corso si svolge al confine tra l’antropologia filosofica e
l’antropologia teologica e lascia intravedere attenzioni per
l’evangelizzazione ecclesiale, in particolare per l’annuncio della
Parola.

IL CINEMA CONTEMPORANEO
TRA NICHILISMO E SPIRITUALISMO (24 ore)
Il cinema è da sempre uno specchio attraverso cui indagare la
realtà. Ogni film ci parla del presente e ci dà una rappresentazione
abbastanza fedele di ciò che agita una determinata società. Il cinema
contemporaneo è perciò un ottimo strumento d’indagine per
comprendere la nostra complessa realtà postmoderna, con tutti i
contrasti, le incertezze, le paure che la dominano. Il corso prenderà in
esame una serie di pellicole, americane ed italiane, per tracciare un
percorso ben preciso: comprendere, attraverso il cinema, quali siano i
valori, o i disvalori, che sono predominanti nella nostra epoca. I film ci
guideranno attraverso una realtà polarizzata su due estremi: da una
parte, un nichilismo estremo, dall’altra la ricerca, sotterranea ma
neanche troppo, di un nuovo “re-incantamento” spirituale per una
società che si sente smarrita. Si analizzeranno pellicole di ogni genere,
dal noir, al dramma, al film religioso propriamente detto fino
addirittura al genere fantascientifico, per avere un quadro ben preciso
della situazione attuale del nostro sistema culturale e valoriale
contemporaneo.

Prerequisiti
Il corso non richiede preliminari conoscenze musicali, esige invece la
conoscenza della Bibbia e in particolare delle sue problematiche
ermeneutiche e delle strategie della comunicazione umana e di quella
biblica in particolare.

Argomenti e tematiche
Saranno ascoltate ed interpretate alcune testimonianze vocali e musicali di
ispirazione biblica secondo la liturgia ebraica e cristiana ed alcune
composizioni di musica ‘colta’ e popolare occidentale dal medioevo fino a
Luciano Berio, passando per Bach, Haendel… e i grandi ‘esegeti’ e
compositori musicali della Bibbia.
Le composizioni musicali da analizzare ed interpretare hanno per soggetto
ispirante alcune pericopi bibliche, storie ed eventi di alcuni personaggi,
tematiche bibliche.
Obiettivi:
 saper ascoltare una composizione musicale di ‘ispirazione
biblica’;
 saper porre in correlazione il testo biblico con alcuni elementi
compositivi del canto e della musica;
 saper rintracciare nelle composizioni musicali il contributo
esegetico al testo biblico o il suo pretesto ispirativi;
 saper elaborare attività didattiche sull’interazione esegetica tra
Bibbia e culture musicali.
Finalità


donare al testo biblico la potenzialità comunicativa della
musica e degli altri linguaggi complementari della
comunicazione;
valorizzare la musica come esegesi ‘ulteriore’ e ‘inculturante’
del messaggio biblico.

LA FORMAZIONE MORALE DEI GIOVANI (24 ore)
Il problema che il Corso affronterà, nel parlare della formazione morale
dei giovani, non è quello di “dover cambiare la dottrina”, ma quello di
“inculturare i princìpi generali”, per cui gli operatori e i formatori
dovranno essere consapevoli delle “molteplici tentazioni pastorali” ed
essere convinti che “l’inculturazione non potrà indebolire i veri valori”,
poiché essi si adattano senza cambiare, anzi trasformano gradualmente i
diversi relativismi in una cultura integrale (Evangelii gaudium, 50-109). Il
Corso poi si soffermerà sulla necessità di un rinnovamento e, più ancora,
“di una vera conversione del linguaggio” nella formazione morale dei
giovani che non sia meramente teorica e sganciata dai problemi reali
(Amoris laetitia, 259-312). Esaminerà inoltre le conseguenze e la crisi
dell’antropocentrismo individualista dei giovani nel loro rapporto
concreto con l’ambiente sociale ed ecologico per promuovere il Vangelo
della Creazione in vista di un’ecologia integrale (Laudato si’, 62-162).

CORSO PER FORMATORI
In collaborazione con l’Istituto di Spiritualità della Facoltà di Teologia
della PUST, viene proposto annualmente un Corso per Formatori/Formatrici.
Il corso, in lingua inglese e italiana, è destinato a favorire la maturità dei
futuri educatori-formatori.
Il corso prevede tre aree di studio: Spiritualità, Scienze umane, Psicologia.
Seminari, laboratori ed esercitazioni completeranno la preparazione degli
iscritti.
La durata del corso può essere di un anno (due semestri) o due anni
(quattro semestri).
Requisito minimo per l’accesso al Corso è il possesso di un titolo valido
per l’accesso all’Università o l’autorizzazione alla partecipazione rilasciata da
un’apposita commissione dell’Istituto.
Alla fine del corso, viene rilasciato un certificato di partecipazione.

LA FORMAZIONE MORALE DEI GIOVANI (24 ore)
Il problema che il Corso affronterà, nel parlare della formazione morale
dei giovani, non è quello di “dover cambiare la dottrina”, ma quello di
“inculturare i princìpi generali”, per cui gli operatori e i formatori
dovranno essere consapevoli delle “molteplici tentazioni pastorali” ed
essere convinti che “l’inculturazione non potrà indebolire i veri valori”,
poiché essi si adattano senza cambiare, anzi trasformano gradualmente i
diversi relativismi in una cultura integrale (Evangelii gaudium, 50-109). Il
Corso poi si soffermerà sulla necessità di un rinnovamento e, più ancora,
“di una vera conversione del linguaggio” nella formazione morale dei
giovani che non sia meramente teorica e sganciata dai problemi reali
(Amoris laetitia, 259-312). Esaminerà inoltre le conseguenze e la crisi
dell’antropocentrismo individualista dei giovani nel loro rapporto
concreto con l’ambiente sociale ed ecologico per promuovere il Vangelo
della Creazione in vista di un’ecologia integrale (Laudato si’, 62-162).

QUESTIONI ATTUALI DI ANTROPOLOGIA (24 ore)
Il corso muove dalle problematiche attuali della comunicazione e
soprattutto dalla necessità di dare spessore e profondità alle parole, al
dialogo e alle relazioni umane. A partire da alcuni apporti filosofici
contemporanei (Derrida, Marion, Levinas, Chrétien, Nancy, Falque,
Agamben…) e a partire dall'ispirazione della Rivelazione, si
approfondisce l'intreccio tra parola, silenzio e scrittura.
In tale intreccio emerge un orizzonte di umanità che rompe con il
primato del soggetto e della coscienza chiusa in se stessa. La parola
emerge come suono prima che per il suo rinvio a un significato; il silenzio
apre all’esperienza muta del corpo, agli affetti, all’accoglienza dell’altro;
la scrittura manifesta la sua povertà e attesa di prendere corpo ma, allo

stesso tempo, apre a un appello e a un dono iscritti nel cuore
dell'esistenza. L’intreccio parola-silenzio-scrittura, mentre ridà spessore di
umanità alla comunicazione, apre anche al luogo dove si ode una parola
altra, una Parola di Dio, se è vero che Dio parla all’uomo con parole
umane (cf. DV 18: «Le parole di Dio, infatti, espresse con lingue umane,
si sono fatte simili al linguaggio degli uomini, come già il Verbo
dell’eterno Padre, avendo assunto le debolezze della umana natura, si fece
simile agli uomini»).
Il corso si svolge al confine tra l’antropologia filosofica e
l’antropologia teologica e lascia intravedere attenzioni per
l’evangelizzazione ecclesiale, in particolare per l’annuncio della Parola.

PEDAGOGIA INTERCULTURALE (24 ore)
Il corso si soffermerà su alcuni aspetti fondanti teorici della pedagogia
interculturale ovvero le sfide che pone la diversità culturale in tempo di
globalizzazione, considerando in particolare i vettori della diversità
culturale ossia le lingue, l’educazione, la comunicazione e i contenuti
culturali, la creatività.
Ci si soffermerà poi sui presupposti e le modalità del dialogo
interculturale, considerando in particolare gli ostacoli al dialogo ovvero
gli stereotipi e l’intolleranza.
Per quanto riguarda gli aspetti pratici, questi si coglieranno soprattutto
attraverso il testo di don Milani, nella misura in cui l’opera si centra sul
problema dell’offerta di pari opportunità a persone diverse.
La recensione di un libro offrirà allo studente l’opportunità di
approfondire i molteplici aspetti legati alle problematiche identitarie, fonte
di molti conflitti in ambito multiculturale.

An Experience of Theological Formation in the Heart of Rome To
Think, to Love, to Hope
The Higher Institute for Religious Sciences Mater Ecclesiae is linked to
the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical University of St. Thomas
(Angelicum) in Rome since 1964, according to the regulations of the
Congregation for Catholic Education. Its origins date back to more than a
century ago.
The Institute is a school of theological education where one trains to
think through the faith, to exercise a believing reason. It is a
“gymnasium” of reflection on the faith in which one tries to practice the
intellectus (intus-legere) fidei, being aware that faith provokes questions
and awakes the need of a deeper knowledge (about themselves, the world
and God).
Thinking through the faith is not separated from love for God, rather it is
the consequence of the latter. In the Christian experience, knowledge and
love fecundate each other: it is precisely because of love for the God who
entered into human history that the desire to understand him is aroused.
“One who loves realizes that love is an experience of truth, opening our
eyes to see reality in a new way, in union with the beloved [...]. Faithfilled reason and love … become one [eye] in rising to the contemplation
of God” (Pope Francis, Lumen fidei, 27).
Theology also strengthens the hope of the believer; it stimulates us to
strain forward with courage towards the future. It is a way of training
ourselves to “dream with our eyes open”, in the certainty that fidelity to
the Almighty will allow his promises of good to all people to be brought
to fruition in the concrete circumstances of history. In a world and a
history that is too often marked by suffering and death, theology helps us
to rediscover in the weakness of the Cross of the Risen Christ the strength
to keep us moving ahead along the way towards the future.
Lastly, since the task of thinking, loving and hoping is necessarily
exercised in the context of the specific times and places (hic et nunc),
where believers live out their religious and human experience, the Mater
Ecclesiae Institute always pays attention to a dual need: on one hand,
the fact of being located in Rome offers their own students the opportunity
to experience the unity and the catholicity of the Church; this implies the
need for a universal vision of education. On the other hand, being in
Rome involves being in a culturally rich environment with which it is
important to be in contact.
Therefore the Mater Ecclesiae Institute is interested in religious and
cultural issues, both current and cutting-edge, so as to foster reciprocal

knowledge between Christians and those of other faiths, and between
believers and all those searching for truth. It is not a coincidence that, over
and above the courses offered to religious men and women, to catechists
and to pastoral workers, there are also continuing vocational training
courses (permanent formation courses), theological-pastoral refresher
training courses, and others on interreligious or intercultural context.
An additional point may be made in regard to the history of Mater
Ecclesiae through which two important characteristics emerge: a long
experience of teaching and academic reflection, at the level required by
European university standards; a special attention to St Thomas Aquinas,
presented both by the Second Vatican Council and the Pontifical
Magisterium as a precious and life-giving source of reference for all those
working to understand revealed truth at the service of the human being
and human history.
The Higher Institute for Religious Sciences “Mater Ecclesiae” embraces
the needs of a multiethnic society and offers the study of several
disciplines with a special focus on ecumenical, intercultural and
interreligious dialogue. For this reason during the academic year
2005/2006, besides the Italian section, an English section has been
activated, in order to satisfy the request of several religious congregations
asking for a biblical-theological and philosophical education as a precious
contribution to the training of students coming from different countries.
A final consideration. Mater Ecclesiae students come from 40 different
countries; the great part of them is made up of religious women that – as
the recent and the past showed us – will be entrusted with responsible
tasks, such as General Superiors, Religious Formators, Responsible for
the Community, Directors of apostolic works. This means that, thanks to
Mater Ecclesiae students, the Angelicum confirms and broadens its
universal mission.

GENERAL PLAN OF STUDY
(cf. Instruction for the Superior Institutes of Religious Sciences, approved
on 28 June 2008 by the Congregation for Catholic Education).
The plan of study foresees a five-year curriculum plan, organized in two
cycles:
a)
The first cycle is a three-year course at the end of which students
earn the Bachelor’s Degree in Religious Sciences, as long as
they attend all the courses and pass all the exams foreseen by the
plan of study, they prove the knowledge of a second language,
they pass the comprehensive final exam and they present with
success a paper.
b) The second cycle is a two-year course at the end of which
students earn the Master’s Degree in Religious Sciences, as
long as they attend all the courses and pass all the exams
foreseen by the plan of study, they prove the knowledge of a
second language and they discuss with success a thesis.
The above academic title is recognized by the Italian State (and others) for
teaching Catholic Religion in the High School. Furthermore, the Master’s
Degree in Religious Sciences allows the continuation of the studies at
Faculties and Ecclesial Institutes for additional academic degrees
(Baccalaureate, Licentiate, Doctorate), according to the regulations set by
the Congregation for Catholic Education and the Faculty of Theology,
which the Institute is part of.
The Institute also offers a Course for Formators, organized in
collaboration with the Institute of Spirituality, PUST.

SPECIAL REGULATIONS FOR THE INSTITUTE
COURSES
Lessons are in the morning and in the afternoon (from Monday to
Friday)
Tutor-assisted personalized plans of studies are possible.
In order to be partially exempted from attending classes, Students who
cannot attend regularly the lessons of all the courses, because of binding
work commitments, should submit a written application to the President
no later than November 10th, enclosing suitable documentation.
EXAMS
Marks for each exam is out of thirty ranging from a minimum of 18/30
to a maximum of 30/30. When exams are particularly successful, it is
possible to add cum laude to the highest mark of 30/30.
At the end of each exam students sign the record sheet and the marks
are entered on their Exam Sheet.
RETAKING EXAMS
If students fail an exam, they can take it again in the other exam
session of the same Academic Year or in the following Academic Years.
Students are not allowed to retake an exam they have already passed.
COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAM
The Comprehensive Final Exam is taken on the basis of three themes
drawn from a list of five thematic areas according to the subjects attended
by there students. The themes are drawn a week before in the Secretariat.
The exam is conducted orally during which students expound concisely
each theme and answer the questions from the examining commission.

The examination commission will comprise the President or VicePresident and the Professors pertaining to the themes drawn by the
students.
STUDENTS’ REPRESENTATIVES IN THE ACADEMIC COUNCIL
At the beginning of each Academic Year Students elect two
representatives, one for the Italian Section and one for the English
Section, selected from the ordinary students regularly enrolled and in
order with their curriculum of studies. The representatives hold their
office for one year and are re-eligible.
GENERAL MEETING OF THE STUDENTS
Students can gather in a general meeting during lessons’ hours for no
more than four times per each Academic Year.
In order to convene the meeting, Students’ Representatives should make a
request to the President, enclosing the agenda of the topics under
discussion.
As soon as permission has been granted, the representatives will take care
to convene the meeting, by means of notices on the noticeboards.
Each meeting is self-managed and will not last more than 30 minutes to be
distributed between the previous and the following lesson.

ORIENTATION AND NORMS FOR OBTAINING THE ACADEMIC
DEGREES
A. BACCALAUREATE IN RELIGIOUS SCIENCES (= Bachelor’s Degree in
Religious Sciences)
Ordinary students who intend to obtain the Baccalaureate in Religious
Sciences are required to write a paper (Tesina) of at least 30/50 pages,
under the direction of the Professor.
B. LICENTIATE IN RELIGIOUS SCIENCES (Master’s Degree in Religious
Sciences)
students who intend to obtain the Licentiate in Religious Sciences,
after obtaining the Diploma are required to write a paper (Thesis)of
80/100 pages under the direction of a Professor. In this written work
students should prove their human, intellectual, theological and
pedagogical maturity, their capacity to treat scientifically the argument
under consideration and their didactic and pastoral sensitivity.
Ordinary
In order to write their thesis, students should pick up in the Secretariat the
Methodological Rules for writing a paper.
PROCESS COMMON TO BOTH ACADEMIC DEGREES
The students must:
1) have completed the full course of studies included in the study
curriculum
2) discuss their graduation thesis before an examining board. The
discussion will last about 45 minutes.
In order to be admitted to the Baccalaureate or Licentiate exams students
should submit to the Secretariat, within the dates indicated in the
Academic Calendar:
a) Proposal for the topic of the Thesis addressed to the President (by
filling the form provided by the Secretariat). This application should
be signed by the Professor under whose direction the student has
chosen to write the thesis;

b) the application to the President for the admission to the Baccalaureate
or Licentiate exam. The application should be preceded by the
Advanced Draft stage declaration of the Professor, under whose
direction the student elaborates their written dissertation, stating that
the student is in the advanced stage of completing the thesis and will
be able to finish it within the prescribed date. The title of the Thesis
written in this document cannot be modified. The relevant forms are
available in the secretariat;
c) four bound copies of the thesis, one of which should be hard cover
bound. One copy should be the original one together with a CD. All
the copies should be countersigned by the student and by the thesis
Director, to whom the student is to submit one copy of the thesis
directly. The other three copies should be consigned to the Secretariat
at least 30 days before the beginning of the exam session.
Payment of the pertinent fees for the Baccalaureate or Licentiate is to be
effected in two instalments: the first instalment concomitantly with the
application for the admission to the Baccalaureate or Licentiate exam; the
second one when delivering the copies of the thesis

The program follows structure and method of the Faculty of Theology (I
Cycle), with a particular attention to the pedagogical and pastoral goals of

MORAL PHILOSOPHY (24 hours)
This course introduces students to the field of philosophical ethics and
intends to explore the complexity of human act, through the notions of
end/mean, choice and intention, freedom and responsibility,
deliberation and practical rationality.
In particular, the reading of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, books
VIII-IX, will be the starting point for approaching other following
philosophical texts on friendship: the focus of the readings is on the
way in which it has been suggested that the experience of friendship
contributes to the individual’s flourishing, and can move human being

The Course will furnish general information on the main Problems

This course studies the theological and philosophical basis of Christian
morality as a “call to perfection” (Mt 5:48). In the light of this “call”,

the general principles of moral theology are investigated according to
the teaching of the Catholic Church.
This course in Moral Theology is directed toward the moral formation
of the students through an articulate understanding of the principles of
Christian morality as taught by the Catholic Church. With this end in
mind, the primary goals are that the student:

Obtain an appreciation for the dignity of the human person as
created by God Imago Dei - in his own image and likeness;
Distinguish between true freedom and erroneous
contemporary ideas of human freedom;
Understand the nature of human happiness as ultimately

THE JOHANNINE WRITINGS (36 hours)
The aim of this course is to get acquainted with the main characteristics of
the Johannine Writings, namely: the Gospel of John, First, Second and
Third Letter of John, and the Book of Revelation (Apocalypses).The
course will open with a short discussion concerning the place of these
Writings within the New Testament canon and their use in early
Christianity. With regard to individual Writings we shall focus on the
following aspects: literary genre and style, structure, addressees, purpose,
place of composition, date, authorship, and the main themes. As far as the
Gospel of John is concerned we shall discuss its peculiarities in
comparison to Synoptic Gospels. Next we shall evaluate the affinities of
the three Epistles with the Gospel of John. As for Apocalypses we will
look at it also in the context of the Jewish apocalyptic literature. In
conclusion we shall pay special attention to aspects of theology,
Christology and ecclesiology, as well as the use of the Old Testament in
each Johannine writing.

The secularism of today’s world will be looked at as a presupposition
for the study of eschatology as well as a suitable anthropology which sees
the soul as the form of the body. In the over view of eschatology we will
look at the centrality of the theme of the kingdom of God in the scriptures.
Particular/individual eschatology studies death, judgement, purgatory,
heaven and hell. General/universal eschatology studies “the resurrection
of the dead and the life of the world to come”. Finally, the relevance of all
of this for the secularist world of today will be drawn out.

INTRODUCTION TO CHRISTIAN WORSHIP (24 hours)
Description
A historical and theological consideration of the liturgy of the
Catholic Church from its origins (biblical) to the reforms of the Second
Vatican Council (contemporary). The course will include a survey of the
development of the Latin liturgy in its various historical and cultural
phases, and highlight its theological and pastoral dimensions, based
primarily on the content of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy
(Sacrosanctum Concilium) of Vatican II.
Purpose and method of this course
To introduce the students to the theology of Christian worship and to
provide a foundation for the further theological reflection on liturgy as a
“theological locus” for the Church’s teaching and life.
It is hoped that, by the end of the course, the student will have reached
a clearer understanding: 1) of the nature and aim of the liturgy in general
with a strong historical/theological sense; 2) of the components of
Catholic liturgy; 3) of the relationship between the diverse acts of
worship; 4) of the contemporary challenge put to religious services. It will

be supposed that the student will come to class with the material already
read that is indicated on the class schedule.
NB: given that liturgy is an integrated experience in relation to life (and
not only to ideas and to books) it would be well worth your attention to
experience diverse liturgical settings in the semester. Rome offers many
diverse liturgical experiences from the variety of Eastern rites to diverse
Anglican and Protestant church services.

2. Doing the assigned required readings before each class.

CHURCH HISTORY III (only for III year students) (24 hours)
This course surveys the history of Christianity from the Fall of
Constantinople (1453) to the beginning of the Third Millennium (c.2000).
In the course of the lectures, the general trends and settings that shaped
the Church in the West from the Early Modern Era (mid-15th century) to
the contemporary period will be examined and discussed.
Special attention will be given to the Movements, Reformers,
Founders and Councils of the Western World.
In addition, the traditions of Eastern Christianity and the development of
Christian churches in Asia, Africa and America will be concisely
expounded.

In collaboration with the Institute of Spirituality of the Faculty of
Theology – PUST, the ISSR Mater Ecclesiae offers a Course for Formators.
The Course, both in English and in Italian language, is aimed at
improving the maturity of the future Formators.
The Course foresees three main areas: Spirituality, Pedagogy,
Psychology. Seminars, Workshop and Practice Exercises will complete the
education level of the students.
The course duration is one-year (2 semesters) or two-year (4 semesters).
The minimum entry requirement for the access in the Course is the
possession of a valid title for the access to the university or the authorization
of a special commission of the Institute.

CHRISTIAN ANTHROPOLOGY (24 hours)
The Apostle Paul says in his letter to the Galatians, “I have been
crucified with Christ, and I live now not with my own life, but with the
life of Christ who lives in me.” (Ga 2:19) The gift of the grace of Christ,
heals, transforms and perfects human nature. This course will study the
human person created in the image of God, redeemed in Christ, and
sanctified by the gift of the Holy Spirit. Special attention will be given to
the relationship between human nature and the new life of grace in
Christ.

SPIRITUAL THEOLOGY (24 hours)
The invitation to spiritual communion with God as presented in the
First Letter of St John. Study of selected texts from the Christian
spiritual tradition (e.g. Ignatius of Antioch, Letter to the Romans, St
Augustine, Confessions) with special emphasis on the following
themes: God’s saving mercy, prayer, the ascetical life, growth in
holiness and contemporary spirituality.

HISTORY OF SPIRITUALITY, PART I:
EARLY MONASTICISM TO THE HIGH MIDDLE AGES (24 hours)
This course will be an integration of the development of Catholic
spirituality from the beginnings of monasticism to the High Middle
Ages relating distinctive ways of prayer with significant spiritualities
in the context of their historical emergence in the life of the Church.
Special emphasis will be given to the writings of St. Benedict, St.
Augustine, and the spirituality of the Franciscans and the Dominicans
with emphasis on the writings of St. Bonaventure, St. Thomas
Aquinas, and St. Catherine of Siena.
These distinctive spiritualities will also be considered in terms of the
relevance of the wisdom that they offer in the life of the Church today.

HISTORY OF SPIRITUALITY, PART II:
RENAISSANCE TO POST-VATICAN II (24 hours)
The period in the history of Catholic Spirituality from the Renaissance
to the present Post-Vatican II time in the life of the Church is richly
significant in the lives and teachings of the Church’s saints, the
missionary expansion, and the witness of the Church and her religious
orders and congregations to a world going through a profound time of
intellectual, scientific, and general cultural ferment. The purpose of
this course will be to review the on-going development of Roman

Catholic spirituality with special emphasis upon the traditions offered
by the new religious orders and congregations founded during this
period, especially the Carmelite Order and the Society of Jesus, as well
as the continuing influence of the Order of Preachers and other orders
founded in the earlier ages in the life of the Church.

WISDOM FOR THE JOURNEY:
MODELS OF SPIRITUAL DIRECTION (24 hours)
In the history of the Church there have been profound spiritual guides
and traditions from the various religious orders in the Church which
offer profound wisdom illuminating the teachings of Christ for his
Pilgrim People. This course will review some of the more significant
practical applications of this distinctive wisdom for not only general
guidance in the spiritual life, but also illuminating ways of
discernment in times of decision. It is the intention of this course to
both summarize the principal characteristics of the distinctive
teachings of these various saints and/or religious orders and show the
practical application of this wisdom for contemporary Christians
seeking to know the truth of the Gospel of Christ Jesus, who is the
same yesterday, today, and forever.
