La provincia di Varese, soprattutto il territorio dei laghi, è da sempre una terra ospitale e operosa. Il felice connubio tra
la qualità paesaggistica e la capacità di fare impresa dei suoi abitanti ci ha permesso di raggiungere ragguardevoli
primati in tutti i campi: industriale, turistico, sportivo, ricreativo proiettandoci nelle alte classifiche della qualità della
vita. La vicinanza con Milano, la Svizzera, i più importanti snodi automobilistici, ferroviari e aeroportuali del Nord
Italia, la ricettività alberghiera e un’efficiente rete di servizi fanno della provincia di Varese la meta ideale e facilmente
raggiungibile per il business, le competizioni sportive o l’elegante turismo leisure immersi in un paesaggio unico e invitante. Inoltre, da noi lo sport è una vera e propria vocazione che ci ha permesso di ospitare varie manifestazioni di
livello internazionale nel campo del ciclismo, dell’equitazione, del golf, del volo a vela e ovviamente del canottaggio.
Questo perché garantiamo efficienza organizzativa, accoglienza di alto livello a contatto di moderni terreni di gara
per ogni genere di competizione. Nella nostra terra il canottaggio e gli sport remieri in genere sono praticati da sempre
per la presenza di tanti laghi che li ospitano: calmi, limpidi, immersi nel verde, particolarmente belli. Tante e blasonate
sono le società di canottaggio che circondano i nostri laghi riempiendoli con atleti di successo. Sono soprattutto scuole
di vita oltre che di agonismo perché da sempre aiutano i giovani di tutto il mondo a formarsi e a crescere con l’eleganza
e l’armonia del gesto atletico, lo spirito di sacrificio e il gioco di squadra: valori tipici di uno sport nobile e avvincente.
Ritengo corretto enfatizzare quest’ultimo aspetto perché nel nostro attraente territorio si è affermato come stile di vita
diventando tradizione.

The Province of Varese, and the lakes in particular, has always been a welcoming and industrious land. The superb combination of stunning
countryside and the people’s flair for business has enabled us to achieve notable record achievements in all fields: industry, tourism, sports
and leisure propelling us to the top of classifications regarding quality of life. Our proximity to Milan, Switzerland and the most important

the waters with successful athletes. Above all these clubs are schools of life as well as competition as they have always helped young people
from all over the world to develop and grow with the elegance and harmony of sport, the spirit of sacrifice and teamwork: values typically
associated with such a noble and fascinating sport.
I believe it is important to emphasise this last point as rowing has established itself as a lifestyle and tradition in our land.

Remiamo nel Lago di Varese da oltre 5000 anni. Per questo la passione ce
l’abbiamo dentro ed è radicata nella nostra storia e nel nostro territorio. Una
sfida che nasce e cresce fin dalla preistoria per motivi di sopravvivenza e si
trasforma, col passare del tempo, nel piacere di vivere quotidianamente queste acque, levigate e calme. Così nasce nel 1927 la Società Canottieri Varese,
la cui attività ha caratterizzato buona parte della vita sulle sponde del lago.
Il 1960 segna invece la nascita di un’altra prestigiosa società che solcherà
con altrettanto successo le acque del lago di Varese la “Canottieri Gavirate”.
Organizzazioni di uomini e donne che ancora una volta hanno vissuto grazie
al lago. Ora il lago vive anche attraverso il canottaggio.
A PASSION WITH ANCIENT ORIGINS
We’ve been rowing on Lake Varese for over 5,000 years. That’s why we have such an
innate passion for rowing; it’s deeply rooted in our history and our land. The challenge of
rowing began back in prehistoric times as a means of survival and has continued to evolve
over the centuries into a wonderful way to enjoy these calm, flat waters. Rowing was so
popular that the Società Canottieri Varese was established in 1927 and has continued to
play a major role in life on these shores ever since.
1960 marked the start of another prestigious club that had just as much success at sailing
the waters of Lake Varese - the “Canottieri Gavirate”.
Once again groups of men and women enjoy life thanks to the lake. And now the lake is
coming to life through rowing.

PROVINCIA DI VARESE, TERRA DI PRIMATI
In questa terra, ricca di laghi - Varese deve la sua radice all’antica lingua celtica dove “var” significa appunto acqua - sono transitati popoli europei con
usi, costumi e tradizioni differenti che si sono insediate su questi litorali da
migliaia di anni “remando” instancabilmente sino ai giorni nostri per raggiungere ragguardevoli traguardi in ogni campo da quello imprenditoriale a
quello turistico e soprattutto nello sport dove eccellono il golf, il ciclismo, l’equitazione e primeggia il canottaggio.
La ricchezza d’acqua, la posizione geografica hanno sicuramente favorito la
nascita di un tessuto produttivo alla base del “miracolo economico lombardo”.
Parimenti in questa terra i primati dell’industria tessile, aeronautica, motociclistica, elettrodomestica si sono intrecciati con estrema naturalezza a quelli
sportivi riconosciuti ed apprezzati in tutto il mondo.
Infatti, accanto al verde, ai laghi, alle colline, alle Prealpi, alle città, alle preziose
vestigia architettoniche laiche e religiose, alle archeologie liberty, si sviluppa l’intreccio di importanti snodi stradali, ferroviari e soprattutto aerei grazie all’aeroporto intercontinentale di Malpensa, il più importante “hub” del sud Europa,
vero e proprio volano distributivo di persone e merci a due passi dal mondo intero. Una circostanza questa che assieme a tutte le altre non può che facilitare
l’attenzione verso la nostra terra resa già appetibile dalla intrinseca qualità paesaggistica e soprattutto da un elevato livello di accoglienza.

THE PROVINCE OF VARESE, LAND OF WORLD RECORDS
The name, Varese, comes from the Celtic language in which “var” actually means water so
with its myriad lakes it is aptly named. Over the years people with a wide variety of customs
and traditions have passed through this land, many of whom chose to settle here on the shores
as people still continue to do today making their mark in everything from business to tourism
and especially in sport by excelling in golf, cycling, equitation and rowing in particular.
The richness of the water and the geographic location undoubtedly favoured the birth of the
productive fabric at the base of “Lombardy’s economic miracle”.
Similarly the records set by the textile, aeronautic, motorcycling and home appliance industries
in this land are naturally interwoven with the records set by sportspeople who are recognised
and loved all over the world.
Our green countryside, lakes, hills, Alpine foothills, cities, inestimable secular and religious
architectonic vestiges and architectural Art Nouveau gems blend effortlessly with a network of
major roads and railways that are complemented by the air links offered by Malpensa
International Airport, the most important hub in Southern Europe and a hive of activity of people
and goods that provides a gateway to the rest of the world.
With the intrinsic beauty of our landscapes and the high standard of our accommodation, the
Province of Varese is already a tempting place to visit but when all these aspects are combined
it is no wonder so many people flock to the area.

I LAGHI E LO SPORT
Varese ha sempre suggestionato eroi romantici, intellettuali e letterati tra i
quali Henry Beyle (Stendhal) che dall’alto del Campo dei Fiori esclamò: “Visione magnifica! Al tramonto del sole si vedevano sette laghi.”
I laghi costituiscono la peculiarità del territorio varesino insieme allo sfondo
della catena alpina e si possono abbracciare con lo sguardo dalla cima del
Campo dei Fiori, il monte che sovrasta pressoché tutto il territorio provinciale.
I laghi di Varese, Comabbio e Monate, raccolti nel bacino imbrifero del Verbano, costituiscono da decenni, oltre a un panorama di innegabile suggestione, i campi di gara ideali dove si è diffusa e ha primeggiato a livello
internazionale l’arte dello sport remiero del canottaggio.
LAKES AND SPORT
Varese has always greatly influenced romantic heroes, intellectuals and literati, such as
Henri Beyle (Stendhal) who stood on the top of Campo dei Fiori and exclaimed: “What a
magnificent vision! As the sun set you could see seven lakes.”
One of the unique features of this area at the foot of the Alpine Range is its selection of
lakes and nearly all of them can be seen from the top of Campo dei Fiori, the mountain that
overlooks almost the entire province.
In addition to offering views of undeniable splendour, for decades the lakes of Varese,
Comabbio and Monate, in the Verbano drainage basin, have represented ideal competition
venues where the art of rowing as a sport has gained popularity and led the field on an
international level.

IL LAGO DI VARESE
Il lago ha visto, in questi ultimi anni, il fiorire di molteplici attività turistiche e sportive, in particolare il canottaggio che ne ha ampliato la fama a livello internazionale. Non a caso, le nazionali sportive australiane hanno scelto le sponde del
Lago di Varese a Gavirate per la loro struttura di appoggio dove acclimatarsi e
allenarsi in vista delle più importanti competizioni sportive a livello europeo.
Il canottaggio è lo sport più praticato in virtù dell’eccellente specchio di gara
particolarmente calmo e piatto, immerso nel verde. Non a caso il lago è sede
di due importanti e blasonate società remiere: la Canottieri Varese e la Canottieri
Gavirate.
Il Lago di Varese offre anche la possibilità di praticare cycling lungo una pista
di 27 km collegata con l’anello ciclabile attorno a un altro ideale specchio per
competizioni remiere rappresentato dal lago di Comabbio.
LAKE VARESE
Lake Varese has witnessed an incredible growth in tourism and sports activities in recent years,
especially rowing which has enhanced its fame around the world.
So it was no surprise that Australia’s sports teams chose to use Gavirate on the shores of Lake
Varese for their training centre in Europe where they can acclimatise and train for important upcoming European competitions.
Rowing is the most practised sport in the area as the race venue offers particularly calm, flat
waters surrounded by scenic countryside. No wonder the lake is home to two of the most important and well-known rowing clubs: Canottieri Varese and Canottieri Gavirate.
Lake Varese also offers a wonderful opportunity for cyclists as it has a track nearly 17 miles long
connected to another cycling track around yet another ideal lake for regattas, Lake Comabbio.

IL LAGO DI COMABBIO
Questo lago, circondato come quello di Varese da una pista per il cycling di una
decina di km, è da almeno una ventina d’anni un collaudato e prestigioso specchio
di competizioni remiere.
Correva il 1990 quando un gruppo di Corgenesi appassionati della voga e
amanti del lago diedero vita alla Societa' Sportiva "Canottieri Corgeno”, incoraggiati dalla Federazione Canottaggio Sedile Fisso che aveva individuato nel
lago di Comabbio un perfetto campo di regata per ospitare manifestazioni sportive di alto livello.
Questo bel lago, immerso in una natura incontaminata, è quasi sempre calmo e
senza imbarcazioni a motore che ne possano turbare l’equilibrio
IL LAGO DI MONATE
A pochi km dal Lago di Comabbio, anche le tranquille acque del lago di Monate
accolgono da decenni e con successo l’arte remiera.
La Canottieri Monate fu fondata infatti nel 1971 con lo scopo di promuovere la
pratica del canottaggio nella regione.
L’eccellente campo di gara del Lago di Monate è incorniciato, al pari di quello di
Varese e di Comabbio, dallo spettacolare scenario offerto dalla Alpi e dalle Prealpi
che rende ancora più affascinate la pratica dello sport remiero
LAKE COMABBIO
Like Lake Varese, this lake is also encircled by a cycling track (just over 6 miles long) and has
provided a prestigious venue for regattas for more than twenty years.
In 1990 a group of rowing enthusiasts from Corgeno set up the Corgeno rowing and sports
association, encouraged by the Fixed-Seat Rowing Federation which thought that Lake Comabbio
would be a perfect regatta venue for hosting top-level sports events.
This picturesque lake, set in unspoiled countryside, is almost always calm and has no motorboats
to upset the waters.
LAKE MONATE
Lake Monate is just a few miles from Lake Comabbio and its tranquil waters have provided a
welcome and successful home to rowing for decades.
The “Canottieri Monate” rowing club was founded in 1971 to promote rowing in the area.
Lake Monate is an excellent race venue and just like Lake Varese and Lake Comabbio is framed
by the spectacular backdrop of the Alps and the Alpine foothills, which makes rowing here
even more enjoyable.

E’ il Lago più grande del bacino imbrifero del Verbano dove sono raggruppati
tutti gli ideali specchi di gara per il canottaggio come i laghi di Varese, Comabbio e Monate.
Anche il lago Maggiore è sede di prestigiose società di Canottieri che contribuiscono a mantenere alto il livello di qualità di questo sport in tutto il bacino
dei laghi.
Il lago Maggiore è rinomato anche per la sua qualità paesaggistica data
dalla presenza, lungo il suo litorale, di numerose ville storiche con floridi giardini all’italiana e dalla sobria eleganza delle architetture di carattere religioso
tra le quali, sulla sponda Lombarda, spicca l’Eremo di Santa Caterina del
Sasso Ballaro, un gioiello d’arte e religione unico e sorprendente.
LAKE MAGGIORE
Maggiore is the largest lake in the Verbano drainage basin where all the ideal stretches of
water for rowing competitions can be found, i.e. the lakes of Varese, Comabbio and
Monate.
Lake Maggiore is also home to prestigious rowing clubs that help to maintain superbly high
standards for the sport throughout the entire basin of lakes.
Lake Maggiore is famous for its magnificent landscapes and shores dotted with many
historic mansions with flourishing Italian gardens and for the understated elegance of the
religious buildings, such as the Hermitage at Santa Caterina del Sasso Ballaro, a unique
gem of art and religion that stands on the Lombardy shoreline.

La provincia di Varese è riconosciuta nel mondo dello sport come territorio di
primati conquistati in vari campi. Tra questi l’arte remiera del canottaggio
deve fama e fortuna alle caratteristiche ottimali dei suoi laghi nonché alla
forza e serietà delle tante società di canottaggio che da più di mezzo secolo
continuano a sfornare atleti e successi di livello mondiale affermandosi anche
a livello di Adaptive Rowing per i diversamente abili. Una impegno agonistico
e formativo a 360° che ha contribuito a lanciare Varese nell’Olimpo di questo
sport, un risultato che verrà consacrato con gli europei assoluti del 2012 e i
Master del 2013, ma che si mantiene attivo per ospitareallenamenti di squadre straniere e per gemellaggi con Paesi emergenti.

THE LAND OF SEVEN LAKES AND THIRTEEN ROWING CLUBS
The Province of Varese is recognised in the world of sport as a land that produces record
performances in many different fields. Rowing owes its “fame and fortune” to the excellent
characteristics of its lakes and also to the dedication and sincerity shown by the many
rowing clubs that have been producing athletes and global achievements for more than
half a century. They have also established themselves in the field of Adaptive Rowing for
people with a disability. Their comprehensive commitment to competitions and training has
helped to launch Varese as one of the elite in this sport, an accomplishment which will be
confirmed with the 2012 European Rowing Championships and the 2013 World Rowing
Masters Regatta. Varese also welcomes teams from across the globe to come here and train
and organises twinning initiatives with emerging countries.

innegabili vantaggi in termini di visibilità per gli organizzatori e gli atleti delle
competizioni di livello mondiale. Sarà uno straordinario evento che promuoverà
la tradizione, la creatività e l’innovazione nel settore dell’alimentazione riproponendole alla luce dei nuovi scenari globali al centro dei quali c’è il tema del

EXPO 2015: THE GREAT ISSUES OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
A universal event that will place Lombardy firmly in the international limelight. Expo 2015
will have positive repercussions throughout the entire Province of Varese with undeniable
advantages in terms of visibility for the organisers and athletes of world-class competitions. It

the idea that everyone on the planet should have access to food that is healthy, safe and sufficient.
VARESE, DIETA MEDITERRANEA E NON SOLO
In questi ultimi anni grande spazio è stato riservato al recupero
delle tradizioni enogastronomiche del territorio varesino e in
particolare ci si è rivolti ad alcuni prodotti di qualità tra cui
formaggi, salumi, dolci, miele, vino e ortaggi che rappresentano
solo alcune delle nostre eccellenze alla base di un’alimentazione
sana, ricca, capace di legare la tradizione mediterranea con
quella prealpina. Tale alimentazione con prodotti genuini fatti in
casa “a km 0” oltre ad essere particolarmente gustosa è
equilibrata e adatta per sostenere l’impegno fisico in ogni genere
di sport, in particolare nel canottaggio dove è richiesto un
adeguato consumo energetico calibrato sulle diverse categorie
di atleti. La provincia di Varese annovera una delle più antiche
birrerie italiane. Angelo Poretti fondò infatti nel 1877 la storica
birreria che tutt'ora campeggia all'ingresso della Valganna con
i suoi edifici Liberty.
VARESE. MORE THAN JUST
MEDITERRANEAN CUISINE
A great deal of attention has been paid in recent
years to bringing back traditional foods and wines
in the Varese area with a special focus on the quality
cheeses, cold meats, desserts, honey, wine and
vegetables that represent just some of our excellent
produce and make up a varied, healthy diet that
combines Mediterranean and Prealpine traditions. In
addition to being absolutely delicious, this diet of
homemade products is also well balanced and perfect
for sustaining physical exertion in every type of sport,
particularly rowing which demands a specific energy
intake for each class of athlete. The Province of Varese
boasts one of the oldest breweries in Italy. Angelo
Poretti established the famous brewery in 1877 and
it still stands today complete with its Art Nouveau
buildings at the entrance to Valganna.

E’ l'aeroporto principale del nord Italia a 20 chilometri da Varese (15 minuti di autostrada), nonché il secondo tra i principali aeroporti italiani e base d'armamento delle
compagnie Lufthansa Italia (hub), EasyJet, Air One, Air Italy, Neos e Cargoitalia. Assieme all'aeroporto di Milano-Linate e all'aeroporto di Milano-Orio al Serio forma un
sistema aeroportuale nel nord dell’Italia di oltre 33 milioni di passeggeri annui (2009).
VARESE CULLA DELL’AERONAUTICA
Aeronautica Macchi, Caproni, SIAI Marchetti, Agusta. Nomi, marchi, realtà industriali che
hanno plasmato l’economia e la società della provincia di Varese.Per rintracciare le origini
dell’epopea aeronautica varesina è necessario andare molto indietro nel tempo, agli esordi
del Novecento quando l’avventura del volo tentava i primi timidi decolli nel sud del Varesotto.
s’insediavano già quei nuclei originari della futura impresa aeronautica che avrebbero scritto
la storia del volo in tutto il mondo. Il connubio tra Varese e il volo si è consolidato per molteplici
ragioni: la conformazione geofisica del territorio, la sua posizione, la particolare attitudine
della sua produzione orientata verso il settore meccanico.
MILAN MALPENSA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Malpensa is the main airport for Northern Italy and is just over 12 miles from Varese (a 15 minute
drive on the motorway). It is also Italy’s second largest airport and the base for airlines like Lufthansa

VARESE, THE HOME OF AERONAUTICS
Aeronautica Macchi, Caproni, SIAI Marchetti, Agusta. Names, brands and industries that
have shaped the society and economy of the Province of Varese. In order to trace the origins
of the Varese’s great aeronautical history we need to go back to the start of the twentieth
century when the adventure of flying tested its first flights to the south of Varese. The original
companies that would go on to form the future aeronautical industry and write the history of
flying for the entire world were already based here. The combination of Varese and flying
has been successful for many reasons: the geophysical conformation of the land and its position
together with a unique talent for manufacturing products for the mechanics industry.

E’ un edificio importante per tutta la zona del bacino e punto di riferimento
per la nazionale australiana di canottaggio e non solo. Il nostro lago suscita
l’interesse di altre selezioni straniere, soprattutto di canottaggio, poiché qui,
grazie alle condizioni delle acque ci si può allenare praticamente tutto l’anno.
Per il referente a Varese dell'Australian Institute of Sport, Warwik Forbes, l’Australia è il primo paese che ha investito fondi per creare una struttura d’appoggio in un altro paese. Questa soluzione è allo studio di altri stati come
Canada, Giappone, la stessa Cina.
CAMPIONATI DEL MONDO DI CICLISMO
(2008 UCI Road World Championships) si sono disputati a Varese tra il 23
ed il 28 settembre 2008. L'organizzazione dei campionati del mondo 2008
fu attribuita a Varese dal comitato direttore dell'UCI nel settembre del 2005
che valutò positivamente la qualità tecnica, ambientale, ricettiva e organizzativa del territorio rispetto alle offerte di Viareggio, Lucca e Valkenburg e
nonostante l'edizione 2009 fosse già stata attribuita alla vicina Mendrisio in
territorio elvetico. Varese aveva già ospitato un’edizione nel 1951.
GRAN PRIX
La Federazione Aeronautica Internazionale ha scelto Varese, in particolare il
cielo sopra il lago di Varese, per svolgervi una tappa del FAI Sailplane Gran
Prix , gara mondiale che interesserà una ventina di alianti che si batteranno
per diversi km nei cieli lombardi per poi tagliare il traguardo all’altezza di
uno degli aeroporti di volo a vela più ambiti di tutta Europa e che si affaccia
proprio sul litorale del lago.
THE AUSTRALIAN HUB
This is an important building for the entire lake area and a reference point for the Australian
rowing team and other athletes. Our lake is of great interest to many other foreign teams,
especially in rowing, because the excellent water conditions enable athletes to train practically
all year round. According to Warwick Forbes, the Australian Institute of Sport liaison manager
for Varese, Australia is the first country to have invested funds in an overseas facility like this.
Other countries like Canada, Japan and China are now also looking into this solution.
THE ROAD CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2008 UCI Road World Championships was held in Varese from 23rd to 28th September
2008. The UCI Management Committee awarded the organisation of the 2008 World
Championships to Varese in September 2005 following a positive assessment of the area’s technical, environmental, accommodation and organisational facilities and amenities compared
with those of Viareggio, Lucca and Valkenburg. Varese won the bid even though the 2009
World Championships had been awarded to nearby Mendrisio just over the border in
Switzerland. Varese had already hosted the World Championships back in 1951.
GRAN PRIX
The World Air Sports Federation (FAI) chose Varese, and the skies above Lake Varese, to host
a stage of the FAI Sailplane Grand Prix, a world-class competition involving twenty sailplanes
racing for miles across the Lombardy skies before crossing the finish line above one of the best
sailplane airports in Europe which overlooks the shores of the lake.

La città offre molti spunti interessanti per chi la visita; la sua posizione (tra
monti e laghi) nelle Prealpi lombarde ha fatto sì che molti l'abbiano scelta
come stazione di villeggiatura: tra questi, la celebre famiglia degli Este, che
ha lasciato in eredità al comune il Palazzo Estense, ora sede del municipio,
con i suoi incantevoli giardini, che si dice siano stati realizzati sull'idea di
quelli austriaci di Schönbrunn.
Spostandosi poco lontano dal centro si possono ammirare le due Ville Ponti,
ora utilizzate come sede di mostre e congressi. Salendo verso il quartiere di
Sant'Ambrogio un'altra villa, la Villa Toeplitz, che ospita da alcuni anni le
aule del corso di Laurea in Scienze della Comunicazione dell'Università dell’Insubria. Dal 1960, è sede della Scuola Europea di Varese creata per i figli
dei funzionari europei del Centro Comune di Ricerca. Ridiscendendo, si incontra il Castello di Masnago. Spostandosi dal centro in direzione di Casbeno, poco oltre la Questura della città, si può ammirare la Villa Recalcati,
da diversi anni sede della Provincia, anch'essa ornata da giardini.
Altre ville con parco sono importanti beni del FAI (Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano) tra cui Villa Menafoglio Litta Panza, meglio nota come Villa Panza e la
Torre di Velate.
Nel 2003 il Sacro Monte che domina sulla città, assieme ai Sacri Monti del
Piemonte e della Lombardia, è stato inserito dall'UNESCO nella Lista del Patrimonio Mondiale. Costruito su di un luogo di culto medioevale, poi sede di
un convento di monache e di un Santuario dedicato alla Vergine Maria, il
Sacro Monte venne edificato a partire dal 1605 dal padre Giovanni Aguggiari. Il soggiorno a Varese permette di visitare città come Como, Milano, Torino e Lugano.

VARESE: CULTURE AND LEISURE
Varese offers visitors an infinite number of interesting ideas; the city is set between the
mountains and lakes in Lombardy’s Prealpine foothills so many people have chosen it as a
holiday destination, including the renowned Este family who left Palazzo Estense to the city,
which now uses it as city hall. Palazzo Estense has enchanting gardens that were
apparently inspired by the gardens at Schönbrunn Palace in Austria. Just outside of the city
centre visitors can admire the two Villa Ponti, which are now used to host exhibitions and
conferences. Up the hill towards the Sant'Ambrogio district is another grand residence,
Villa Toeplitz, where lectures are held for the degree course in communication sciences run
by the University of Insubria. Since 1960 it has also been home to the European School in
Varese which was founded for children of staff members at the European Commission’s
Joint Research Centre. Coming back down the hill is Masnago Castle. Just past the city’s
police headquarters on the way out of the city centre towards Casbeno visitors can take
in Villa Recalcati and its stunning gardens which has been the headquarters of the Province
of Varese for many years. Other villas and their grounds are important properties protected
by FAI (the Italian National Trust), such as Villa Menafoglio Litta Panza, which is better
known as Villa Panza and the Tower of Velate.
Together with the Sacri Monti (Sacred Mountains) of Piedmont and Lombardy, the Sacro
Monte mountain which overlooks the city was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List
in 2003. Sacro Monte was originally the site of a medieval settlement and was first built on
by Father Giovanni Aguggiari in 1605. Later it became home to a monastery and a
sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary Other cities, such as Como, Milan, Turin and Lugano
are easy to visit while staying in Varese.

LA TORRE D’ARRIVO
La torre d’arrivo in realizzazione, sarà in grado di soddisfare i requisiti tecnici
previsti per le regate di canottaggio di livello internazionale e sarà costituita
da n. 3 piani, ciascuno avente superficie di circa 55 mq ed altezza di m.
3,00. Accoglierà gli uffici dell’organizzazione al piano terreno, i giudici ed
il photo-finish al piano primo, il commentatore e TV camera al piano secondo.
Il posizionamento è previsto in riva al lago di Varese in località Schiranna su
di un promontorio artificiale di dimensioni modeste che si protende per una
decina di metri verso il lago. Tale posizione consente un’eccellente visibilità
degli ultimi 250 m del campo di regata come pure dell’ area adibita alle premiazioni. Risulterà inoltre integrata nella costruzione del Lido Comunale che
accoglierà le funzioni complementari e di supporto.

THE FINISH TOWER
The finish tower which is currently being built will comply with all the technical requirements
expected for international rowing regattas. It will have three levels, each one 3 metres high
with a surface area of 55 m2. The tower will accommodate the management offices on the
ground floor, the judges and the photo-finish equipment on the first floor, and the
commentary and TV cameras on the second floor. The planned location for the finish tower
is Schiranna on Lake Varese on a modestly sized manmade promontory which stretches out
for about ten metres towards the lake. This position offers an excellent view of the last 250
metres of the course of the regatta and also the area set up for the victory ceremonies. It
will be integrated with the construction of the communal beach which will house
complementary and support facilities.
