Il comitato organizzatore Ugo Peroglio, Bruno Camoletto - Piemonte Canyoning 5 INTRO how this adventure began When, earlier this year, I received a message by AIC proposing me to organize the 13th International Meeting of Canyoning 2015, I initially had some doubts. Then I convened all our members in pizzeria for a general assembly. Was it the effect of beer, unconsciousness or the spirit of adventure that distinguishes us, all along we have decided to accept the challenge. After the positive experience of Tavagnasco in 2011, knowing that it wouldn’t be a cakewalk, we decided to dive headlong into this... the most difficult part was to find a new location with the right requirements and potential, suitable to host an event like this. After several hypotheses and contacts with different administrations, the choice fell on the town of Cuorgnè that, thanks to the enthusiasm and the willingness shown by the councilors Roberto Scotti and David Pieruccini, proposed to settle the logistics base at the sports field in Salto, an proper area strategically placed at the beginning of the beautiful valleys Orso and Soana, near the borders of the National Park of Gran Paradiso. Over and above the organization and logistics, the most important and challenging issue will be the safety of the routes proposed during the meeting; it comes to a total of 27 canyons, seven in Orco Valley, one in Soana Valley, two in the Canavese, one in Valley of Forzo, five in lower Susa Valley and eleven in Valle d’Aosta. During the event there will be several themed nights, such as meteorology presented by Cat-Berro, and video projections; furthermore the Scuola Nazionale Canyoning (the National School of AIC) will propose a course fir “Introduction at canyoning” open to all. The meeting will also be an opportunity to introduce to the participants, Italians and foreigners, the tourism potential organizing a meeting of our territory; in this regard, all the commercial activities offering typical food and craft products will be involved. There will be the chance to experience various activities, including the exciting “Arcancel - The Flight of the Rainbow” in Frassinetto, mountain-biking, paragliding, climbing or just walking in the nearby mountains, accompanied by tour guides to discover the Gran Paradiso National Park. In order to have all this working we cannot help but thank all those who are involved in the organization of the event; from the City of Cuorgnè, in particular the mayor Giuseppe Pezzetto, the assessor Roberto Scotti and the councilman David Pieruccini, that made the premises and the kindergarten area available as meeting place of the event; the Tibaldi family for the management of the bar that will be the meeting place for breakfast and relax; the Trattoria Da Jacopo that will organize and serve dinners; thanks also to the parish priest of Salto for the green area that will be used as a parking; B&Bs and hotels that partnered with discounted prices to make the valley even more inviting; thanks to Banca Reale and Reale Mutua Insurance too. We thank all those who will work actively to make sure that everything will be carried on in safety and efficiency during the event: the local Civil Protection, the shuttle service, the Gran Paradiso National Park, the Iren company, the municipalities of Locana, Noasca, Champdepraz and Novalesa. Finally, I thank all members who passionately, and with no small effort, are doing their utmost to ensure that all the proposed canyons can be made safe, without taking away fun and adventure. I hope I did not forget anyone but if so ... thanks again to everybody! The International Canyoning Meeting by Italian Canyoning Association is now in its thirteenth consecutive edition and is in effect the most important event of the year for this activity. The geographical area chosen in 2015 is the Orco Valley, with base camp in Cuorgnè, a few kilometers from the Gran Paradiso National Park. The area in which the event takes place is not fully exploited yet; in recent years, however, it has seen the opening of new and interesting paths, some of the most beautiful in Italy as well. As mentioned above, that drive us to continue the tradition of the annual gathering are many: join together canyoners from around the world, strengthen relationships with AIC members, compare to other associations, create common projects, develop relationships with local governments and hydroelectric companies involved in water management. It is an important showcase for what AIC thinks the canyoning should be, safety, environment, advanced techniques. It is, of course, also the main annual income, thanks to which it is possible to finance the activities carried out during the year, covering not only operating costs but also unexpected “projects”, as the donation for the Nepalese population. As always, the organization of the AIC International Meeting is possible thanks to the hospitality of a City, in 2015 Cuorgnè, to the local government and various commercial activities that contribute, in their own way, to provide the best service possible. Above all, however, it is through the commitment of some members of the association if all this can be achieved; our association is made of the work carried out by its members, with the only purpose of promoting canyoning through the association. The work done by the Board’s has the aim to offer to the members a growing number of services, events, benefits, projects, but this should not suggest the association is a service company; AIC was founded as a group of enthusiasts canyoners, with a common goal, and that must continue to be. Being part of AIC means, above all, being an active part of one of the largest and most representative family of canyoners in Europe, to really contribute to the development of canyoning, inside and outside Italy. il Consiglio Direttivo dell’Associazione Italiana Canyoning the Board of Directors of AIC / Italian Canyoning Association MARES, ph. Comune di Cuorgnè Assessorato allo Sport Roberto Scotti Davide Pieruccini cuorgnè il borgo antico olio su foglia, opera di Franco “Fragri” Grisolano INTRO 8 Cuorgnè… soul of the Canavesano territory, gateway to the National Park of Gran Paradiso. Cuorgnè, awarded the title of City in 1932, is located at an altitude of 414 m above sea level, on the right side of the moraine gorges formed over millennia by glaciers of the Orco and Soana valleys. The location is such that the original settlement became by its nature a meeting place between the commercial lowland sand mountains, a reference point for the shepherds as well as travelers. Cuorgnè is a charming town, with a pleasant airy climate and nestled in large forests within which its villages are dispersed; it is surrounded by the Orco River, which has its source in the heart of Gran Paradiso and Gallenca, lapping at the borders with the Sacred Franciscan Mount of Belmonte, a UNESCO world heritage site. There are many walks and outdoor sports that can be done safely in contact with nature, near our territory: mountain biking, nordic walking, hiking, paragliding, climbing, alpine skiing, cross country skiing, and of course canyoning. There are several cultural and gastronomic festivals that take place in the year and culminating with the established historical re-enactment of the “Tournament of May at the Court of King Arduino”, tied to the story of the Marquis of Ivrea, Arduino, crowned King of Italy in 1002 . Places of interest are the Ponte Vecchio, the village and medieval arcades, the former Church of the Brotherhood of the SS. Trinity, the Church of St. John, the Archeological Museum of the Canavese, the art gallery named after the great painter and journalist Carlo Bergoglio called Carlin, the Caves of Boira Fusca were artifacts from the Paleolithic (X-VII millennium BC) have been found. It will certainly be a pleasure to host you, confident that you will appreciate what I have described above, which is our territory ... simple, hospitable and full of history... The history of canyoning in the Orco Valley is relatively young, despite the fact that we are in one of the oldest national parks in Italy, one that was mapped and beaten by explorers, mountaineers, hunters and fishermen in its length and breadth, but no one had never dared to explore its gorges. We found traces of ice climbers on a few falls, when it was still cold in the winter, or passages of reckless fishermen in the more inaccessible pools. In 2009 a first guide-book was released by Pascal Van Duin, revealing the beauty of Noaschetta and Vallungo. Simultaneously, the guide “Canyoning in the Western Alps” was published by Geuna and Ruotolo who, exploring the area thoroughly, opened nine routes. As a result, we continued the search, finding and fully arming the upper Noaschetta in July 2011, the Pissa with 120 m of descent and the Piantonetto, the largest tributary of the Orco in an grand endemic environment, and completing the re-equipment of Vallungo. Passing into Val Soana, where only the Rio Verdassa had been descended, on a cold day in October 2012 we explored the Rio Lasin, in the pristine granite valley of Forzo, and then again the Giasset at Piamprato, an alpine canyon already equipped for ice climbing. Moving into Valle d’Aosta, without forgetting the Piovano and Renanchio, we find in the lower valley a few monumental beautiful canyons, full of water and fun, often descended by commercial groups: Tenalle-Hone Gorges, Fer, Chalamy, Bouro and Paculla. The Chasten in the Val d’Ayas, the Clavalitè, going up towards the Mont Blanc, gorgeous and always with big flow, and the alpine, technical and vertical Comboé and Arpisson, newly discovered. Finally, the combination Liconi-Colomba, canyons notable for their considerable enclosure at the end. The Susa valley opens with the classic Rio Sessi, the only aquatic and recreational route in the valley, then moving into the realm of schist with the historic and marmoreal Orrido of Foresto and, entering into val Cenischia, enjoy the terrifying gorge of Novalesa: the Claretto , Marderello and Gioglio canyons, re-equipped by Piemonte Canyoning in 2012 after the devastating mudslides of September 2011. We invite you to descend these itineraries, with a critical and attentive eye, without neglecting the smaller canyons that may reveal interesting passages, feasting upon an uncontaminated environment that must be respected. Who knows if, within the folds of Gran Paradiso, you can still discover new paths. versante est del gran paradiso, ph. internet associazione italiana canyoning L’Associazione Italiana Canyoning (AIC), operante dal 1998, si occupa senza fini di lucro di promuovere e sviluppare il torrentismo su tutto il territorio nazionale. Per contatti scrivere a [email protected] 13 INTRO The Italian Canyoning Association (AIC), born in 1998, as a non-profit organization promotes and develops canyoning on the whole national territory. Welcoming and joining in one family all aspects of “non-commercial” canyoning, the AIC is currently the only association nationwide that operates exclusively for the promotion of proper divulgation, safety and growth of this activity, although having numerous collaborations with other prestigious associations such as the Italian Alpine Club. At the same time it acts as a qualified speaker to other foreign associations, Public Bodies and Parks. Main objectives of the association are: * promoting activities, including exploration, to increase the technical knowledge and to create aggregation among its own members; * create and maintain a register of all Italian canyons; * promote, facilitate and coordinate, also by means of educational courses, the technical level and the standardization of techniques and instructors, in order to achieve a correct practice of canyoning; * operate in the field of environmental protection, parti- cularly with regard to the conservation and preservation of canyon environment; The Association has been pursuing for years some projects related to canyoning, technical and environmental: the ProCanyon project, which involves the equipping and maintenance of the anchors of different canyons through Italy, with very high technical standards, the Clean Canyons project thanks to which some canyons are cleaned from all sorts of waste, the Project C6 to monitoring possible signals of climate changes by measuring the amount of carbon dioxide present in the air of caves and canyons and the aforementioned Cadastre project. In 2000 was created the National Canyoning School by AIC, with cutting-edge techniques, high safety standard, high technical and training level of instructors, teaching uniformity and environmental protection. To date, the school has a teaching staff of almost forty instructors throughout Italy and each year holds between fifteen and twenty courses of different level, including those dedicated to the training of new instructors. Canyoning exists thanks to wonderful places like canyons that must be respected and preserved, first from us who we are their privileged visitors. By following a few simple rules, you can help protect nature and its environments, to whom we have great responsibility; therefore adapt your behavior before, during and after the excursion; plan properly materials, transportations, overnight accommodations and disposal of waste. the serenity and the beauty of the environment. Furthermore, do not forget that there are several species of animals that live in there. Avoid unnecessary noises and unmotivated whistles. Your experience will be more intense and you will appreciate the environment even more. Limit the size of groups Do not use rock as a canvas Small groups (from 6- to 8 people) move faster, are easier to manage and have less impact on the environment. In addition, in highly visited canyons, you will keep anchors busy for less time. Some people wanted us to know that they were there by carving on the rock their names or some dumb phrases. The best sign that you can leave is the total absence of traces of your passage. If you want to let us know your canyoning experience, use the forum InfoCanyon by AIC instead. Respect the local regulations Accepts and respects the existing limitations (canyons or stretches forbidden, time slots, buffer zones, driving bans, etc.). Make proper use of the car. Respect bans and park in dedicated areas. Use the smallest possible number of cars. Remain on marked paths During the approaches try to follow existing paths. If there are no alternatives, choose a track on solid soil where your impact on vegetation will be less. Use existing access and way-outs To preserve vegetation and environment, enter the canyon from the existing paths and installations. Minimize your movements inside the water As far as possible avoid fords and stretches inside the stream bed. Do not step into pools with stagnant water because they contain an infinite amount of living organisms. Avoid irrigated soils, gravel banks, fields of moss, dense vegetation and soft ground. Walk possibly on rocks. Do not walk, swim Do not try to walk inside pools and pots. The water is made to swim; doing so you will avoid to step on the bottom, damaging everything in it. Rispetta gli abitanti del posto Out of the water, always use the same path Non dimenticarti mai che non sei a casa tua. Walking out of the water follow the same path of your teammates in order to minimize damages caused by your steps. Respect the silence Canyons are visited also by other people who want to enjoy Leave the canyon as well as you found it Get used to carry out your garbage with you and also to remove rubbish left in the canyon by other people, such as plastic bottles or cans. Bring along a plastic bag, or rather a net bag, to put them in your backpack. And remember not to throw cigarette butts but bring them out using, for example, a film canister; a butt takes from 1 to 5 years to degrade! Respect other canyoners In a canyon you can find people of different capacities and with different motivations. If you meet groups slower than yours, pass them without walking onto their heads. When you meet commercial groups do not be arrogant or annoyed because you have to wait for your turn, but remember that they are working and they deserve all your respect (and sometimes can even be helpful to you). Respect those who “live” the river Keep in mind that you are not the only one who benefits of the canyon, you can also find fishermen, hikers and swimmers who, just like you, have the right to enjoy its wonderful environment. Respect the locals Never forget that you are not at home. When you change clothes, avoid stripping under the neighbors windows. Do not spread your equipment across the village. Move quietly and respectfully. Remember that, in any case, we are guests. Guests of the village where we are, of the nature, of those who live and work in these places. manifesto ambientale aic PREMESSA Una forra (o gola) è un ecosistema che sotto certe condizioni presenta un’estrema delicatezza e vulnerabilità, e che in ogni caso, essendo uno degli ultimi ambienti della superficie terrestre che mantiene una certa inaccessibilità, presenta caratteristiche di naturalità che vanno di per sé conservate come valore. IMPEGNo A PROMUOVERE LE SEGUENTI NORME COMPORTAMENTALI 1. *liberamente ispirate alle “Tesi di Biella” di Mountain Wilderness 19 AMBIENTE foreword A gorge (or canyon) is an extremely delicate and vulnerable ecosystem with characteristics of naturalness that required to be preserved as a value, being one of the last areas of the Earth’s surface maintaining a certain inaccessibility. A proper state of conservation of the canyon ecosystem is always prevalent against its tourist and/or sport use, being included in these cases the practice of canyoning, both amateur and commercial. GENERAL remarks* Canyons are places where it is still possible, for those who feel the need of uncontaminated areas, to experience wild nature and live in freedom its solitude, its silence, its roars, its dimensions, its natural laws and dangers. The value of canyoning also lies in its potential capacity to stimulate a relationship between man and natural environment in order to create a persisting sense of adventure. The desire to spread the knowledge of canyon environment and canyoning through the implementation of via ferratas or equipped routes, as well as the adoption of a disposable commercial guiding systems, is likely to produce severe damages both to canyons and amateur canyoners, as it ignores the value of wilderness as a cornerstone of the quality of canyoning. New approaches to the canyon environment, with predominant consumerism - spectacular character, are currently publicizing ambiguous messages and encouraging the emergence of a mentality inclined to consider canyons as simple supports for sports and recreational activities. The uniqueness of the places surrounding the canyons is also compromised by the penetration of any means of transport. We believe to be elements that can degrade the environment charm both the use of aerial means for dropping off canyoners at altitudes, as well as the use of common means of transport where circulation is normally forbidden. COMMITMENT TO PROMOTE THE FOLLOWING RULES OF CONDUCT 1. Give up a canyoning excursion, anyway or in specific periods of the year, if this could lead to serious damages to the ecosystem present inside the canyon in question; 2. Do not make permanent changes of the level of acces- environmental manifesto by aic sibility of a canyon, by implementing fixed devices such as steel cables. This kind of devices is allowed only in case of: * canyons already subject to transformation due to tourism interests; * canyons with a recreational and sport fruition where a limited number of fixed devices, except if specifically prohibited by environmental protection laws currently in force, is needed to make danger spots safer without damaging the ecosystem; * canyons with a recreational and sport fruition where, subject to the environmental compatibility of the work and to a proper morphology, it is possible to realize equipped paths suitable for individuals with psychophysical disabilities; 3. During exploration of a new canyon itinerary, not being able to predetermine its value and then not being able to exclude the lack of interest and therefore the absence of future repetitions, use the minimum number of artificial anchors, exploiting natural once wherever possible. Nevertheless, since safety cannot be derogated, material necessary and sufficient to secure a safe hiking has to be used anyway. 4. When equipping with permanent anchors an interesting canyoning itinerary, and therefore subject to frequent repetitions, only install anchors for ropes that will be removed at the end of the abseiling. Necessary and sufficient anchors are: * anchoring points for removable ropes, both for vertical abseiling as well as for exposed horizontal stretches * anchoring points for removable ropes during rescue operations * secondary anchoring points, referring to fixed rearward anchors in comparison with the abseiling vertical, for removable ropes used to facilitate the progression of inexperienced subjects 5. The use of any other type of fixed anchoring systems, not functional to safety but only to comfort such as metal steps or cables, has to be considered absolutely incompatible with these rules of behavior. *loosely based on “Thesis of Biella” by Mountain Wilderness sicuramente torrentismo Prudenza, preparazione dell’uscita, attenzione all’attrezzatura e un approccio più rispettoso delle “regole” non riducono il divertimento. 21 INFO Caution, preparation, attention to the equipment and a respectful of the “rules” attitude do not reduce the fun. Always be prepared to face unexpected situations. Even if you are inclined to a playful practice of this activity, consider the following lists of the MINIMUM equipment required. Without these basic elements, progression can be very slow and the smallest accident can cause huge problems. minimum personal equipment * * * * * * * * * * Long wetsuit (jacket + overalls) 5 mm thick + hood Approved helmet and harness Neoprene socks and specific shoes Specific descender with self-locking carabiner Double lanyard for self-belaying Some pear shaped screw-locker carabiners Whistle Shears or knife Headlamp (with spare batteries) Watertight keg containing food and, at least, a lighter, candles and a thermal blanket minimum group equipment * Static ropes, at least one twice the length of the highest abseiling * Bolting bag with emergency equipment: you will never use it but you can be sure that the day you may need it (anchors to be replaced, missing or badly positioned) it was worth it to carry the weight. * Emergency rope: in addition to being useful in case of rescue maneuvers, an extra rope prevents problems due to unexpected breaks or impossibility to recover the progression rope. It must be at least twice the length of the highest abseiling * Ascending equipment: mechanical ascenders or, at least, two slings for self-belaying knots. * Additional watertight keg: with first aid gear in case of accidents (band-aids, bandages, gauzes, disinfectant, etc.). Technique underwear can be useful as well (capilene fiber or similar) to protect an unfortunate from the cold and a camping gas burner to prepare hot drinks. Note: backpacks and rope bags must be floating. But if something should sink anyway you will need a dive mask or swim goggles to retrieve it. before you start Report to other canyoners (or to local facilities present on safely canyoning site) your destination, the composition of the group and the car license plates. See the LOCAL weather forecast. Check for any possible information on specific websites relating to the itinerary you want to address. Leave early, trying to get the maximum margin of daylight hours. Even with good weather pay close attention to afternoon thunderstorms. DURING THE EXCURSION Possibly create groups of no less than 4 people. In case of accident 2 can leave to call for help and 1 remains with the unfortunate. Avoid very large groups as well. Move forward together, without leaving alone those who recover the ropes or who are simply slower. Each member of the group must be “visible” to those behind him and must be able to see he who precedes him. Use specific techniques that best suit any different situations. If you only know the double rope technique you must know that, in case of wet abseiling or with turbulent pools at the bottom, this technique can be very critical. Learn about alternative techniques. Every pool and toboggan must always be inspected first. In canyon, especially in case of excursions that lasts more than three hours, you will need to eat and drink. In addition to your planned daily meal, bring some more food in the unlikely case you may be very late. at the end of the canyon Remember to notify your contacts once you are back! IN CASe of acCIDENT Call the national emergency number 118, if necessary they will alert the National Alpine and Cave Rescue Corps. IN CASO DI INCIDENTE | EN CAS D’ACCIDENT EN CASO DE ACCIDENTE | IM NOTFALL pericoli! INFO 22 23 INFO dangers! è sempre molto utile in queste circostanze. Many of the canyons reported are exploited by hydroelectric plants. The water flow can suddenly change without warning, even in good weather, a contingency that leaves very little chances to escape from the river bed. It is therefore important and necessary, before and after the descent, to contact the hydroelectric plant upstream, to make sure that no releases will take place during the excursion. A phone call can save your life! Please note that the power companies do not assume any responsibility in case of accident inside watercourses under their management. During spring and early summer the flow is always quite important. Therefore you may often face areas with vortexes that can create serious problems. To avoid the creation of knots, never let the rope run freely inside the pools. Make use of the technical system that involves the use of kit-boules, ropes adjusted at the level of the water and releasable belaying systems. A well-sharpened knife or secateurs are always very useful under these circumstances. Although the siphons are rather rare elements in the canyon described, pay particular attention and be very careful. Weather Equipment Check the weather before venturing inside a canyon. Heavy rains caused by storms can result in sudden increases in flow, endangering your life! The anchors are often damaged or wrecked by strong floods. Always bring with you some spare anchors (self-drilling bolts, rope strings, maillon rapide) Wetsuits too thin or too loose, ropes too short or very old and damaged, an inadequate number of ropes, lack of spare material, lack of spare anchors (self-drilling bolts) are all factors that can endanger your life and the life of the members of the team. Prepare in advance the material required by the descent of the canyon you have chosen, to carefully plan your excursions is essential for your safety. Falling rocks Especially during storms or heavy rains or during ice melting, dangerous falls of rocks may occur. Even tourists, children and wild animals, as deer and goats, can result in voluntary or involuntary falls of dangerous objects. Depth of pools The depth of the pools and the amount of debris (as logs, rocks, gravel, etc) often hidden inside the pools can significantly change after floods (natural or artificial). Always check before jumping. Technical and physical conditions Canyoning is an activity that normally demands good physical training, especially in case of canyons with long approaches and descents. Being prepared to face the physical efforts is a matter of safety, for you and your companions. Therefore, a good technical and physical preparation is needed before venturing in challenging canyons. Look for information or make a little reconnaissance before you undertake an adventure that may result very unpleasant without the adequate preparation. responsabilità | responsibility INFO 24 Il canyoning è un’attività potenzialmente pericolosa e dev’essere effettuata da persone esperte e preparate. Canyoning is a potentially dangerous activity and must be performed by experienced and prepared people. Practicing this discipline can be done at your own risk, checking the conditions of the itineraries before to begin the descent. * Canyons, from a canyoning point of view, can CHANGE at any moment: landslides, floods, downed trees, rainy or dry seasons, snowmelt faster or slower depending on different time of day and on the season, anchors damaged by rocks or simply rusted or exposed to ice. It is clear, therefore, that all information in this book are susceptible to unexpected changes. * The level of the water in some canyons is controlled manually or automatically due to the presence of dams, barrages and uptakes. It is recommended to get all relative information from the hydroelectric companies. * Under no circumstances you should enter into a canyon without the proper emergency anchoring equipment and without the adequate group and individual material (see section “ SAFELY CANYONING”). Therefore, the organization of the excursion is under the responsibility of each canyoner in order to minimize the risks, evaluating from time to time the conditions of the itinerary (weather, anchors, flow, composition and preparation of the group). 25 INFO valutazione | evaluation località | location difficoltà | difficulties tempi | duration quote | elevation sviluppo | distance calate | rappels ancoraggi | anchors navetta | shuttle esposizione | orientation scappatoie | way out opere idriche | HYDRAULICS Presentazione introduction Accesso | access Avvicinamento e rientro approach and way back litologia | lithology CATASTO AIC | AIC CODE procanyon schede percorsi | canyon sheets * * * * ottimo | excellent * * * buono | good * * discreto | not bad * sufficiente | sufficient Comune, Valle, Provincia Village, Valley, Province vedi tabelle difficoltà see difficulty scales → avvicinamento ↓ discesa ← rientro (tempi per un gruppo di 4-6 persone in progressione normale, senza l’assillo di battere record e con condizioni idriche normali per la forra) in metri (quota partenza - quota arrivo) in km o metri (dalla partenza all’arrivo, esclusi avvicinamento e rientro) numero delle calate (in alcuni casi è un numero orientativo, in certi percorsi i tuffi sono parecchi o alcuni salti sono disarrampicabili); come altezza massima si indica l’altezza della calata più alta NON frazionata; quando è presente una calata frazionata viene specificato (es: 30+50) gli ancoraggi presenti in zona sono di vario tipo: da “eccellenti” nei percorsi ProCanyon, a “speditivi” nelle gole meno frequentate. L’intraprendere questa discesa implica l’accettazione di problematiche connesse a tempi, rischi, imprevisti, ecc. del tutto prossime a quelle di un’esplorazione. anchors evaluation DEFINITION Anchor for rappelling: is the anchor used for the descent of the rappel. It is typically very exposed and, for this reason, requires a self-belaying. Anchor bolts for handrails: is the anchor used to reach, in full safety, the anchor for rappelling. Typically it is placed in a sufficiently safe and comfortable location, making self-belaying not necessary. APPLICABILITY The assessment criteria of this evaluation will be adopted for all documents and texts referring to the anchorages conditions of a canyon and that involve, in any way, the patronage of AIC. CLASSIFICATION Excellent (4 TOP) To deserve such rating a canyon needs to be equipped with state-of-the-art anchors. Besides possible wear & tear of bolts and chains, it is not possible to improve the anchors. All these points are fulfilled: 1. All the anchors (except the natural ones) are built with two anchor points (chemically glued or bolted with expansion spits) 2. Expansion spits diameter should be 10 mm at least 3. All components (glued or bolted) are in stainless steel 4. The position of the anchors make possible the correct use of the releasable single-strand technique 5. All anchor bolts are connected by chains 6. The terminal point of each anchor is a metallic ring or a rapide 7. If the approach to the anchor is, however slightly, exposed, dangerous, or simply not straightforward, bolts are put in place to set up a handrail (traverse line) 8. Each handrail bolt is easily and unmistakably distinguished from the rappel anchor points (by its position and/ or type) 9. Each possible jump is also equipped for the rappel (if its height is over 3 meters, or if the jump has some technical aspect that might be uncomfortable for some people, or if the pool at the bottom could be seasonably low) 10.Each down-climb is also equipped for the rappel if the technical grade is over the III and/or their height is over INFO 28 29 INFO 5 meters 11.When the anchors are natural, they are large enough and safe. They have been chosen for their convenient utility and not to save in equipment 12.The use of custom-made anchors components is excluded (plates, rings, etc.). shed from the rappel anchor points (by its position and/ or type) 20.When the anchors are natural, they are large enough and safe. They have been chosen for their convenient utility and not to save in equipment Very good (3 OK) The equipment of the canyon is considered unsafe in its current state. It’s probably best to integrate and improve the anchors. All the points below are fulfilled: 21.The terminal point of each anchor is metallic (through which the rope will be fed) 22.Each handrail bolt is easily and unmistakably distinguished from the rappel anchor points (by its position and/ or type) To belong to this class a canyon needs to be equipped so that even a less experienced canyoner can enjoy it safely. Besides possible wear & tear of the anchors components, it would be difficult to improve them without an expert ad-hoc intervention. All the points from the “excellent” class are satisfied except one. Moreover, canyon equipment fails to be classified “very good” when the points 1, 2, 6, 8, and 11 are not fulfilled. Insufficient (1 INSUFF) anchors evaluation 23.When the anchors are natural, they are large enough and safe. They have been chosen for their convenient utility and not to save in equipment Poor (1 INSUFF) The use of these anchors is deemed dangerous. It is necessary to integrate and improve the anchors. Bad (1 INSUFF) A canyon in this class can’t be descended safely and/or without a major integration on the anchors. In other words, these canyons have been already explored, but nothing more. Choosing to descend one of these canyons implies accounting for higher risks, unforeseen complications, longer duration of the descent, etc. as we would in an exploration. Good (3 OK) A canyon belonging to this class is equipped adequately for a safe, smooth descent. All the points from the “excellent” class are satisfied except two. Moreover, canyon equipment fails to be classified “very good” when the points 1, 6, 8, and 11 are not fulfilled. Ok (2 SUFF) A canyon in this class could present some challenges, especially for beginners. It’s definitely possible to integrate and improve the anchors. All the points below are fulfilled: 13.All the anchors (except the natural ones) are built with two anchor points 14.The terminal point of each anchor is metallic (through which the rope will be fed) 15.Each handrail bolt is easily and unmistakably distinguished from the rappel anchor points (by its position and/ or type) 16.When the anchors are natural, they are large enough and safe. They have been chosen for their convenient utility and not to save in equipment scala impegno generale I II III Sufficient (2 SUFF) This is the class to which most Italian canyons belong. It’s definitely possible (and probably best) to integrate and improve the anchors. All the points below are fulfilled: 17. In case of single bolt anchors, the bolt is chemically glued or it is >10 mm diameter expansion spit 18.The terminal point of each anchor is metallic (through which the rope will be fed) 19.Each handrail bolt is easily and unmistakably distingui- IV V VI Possibilità di porsi fuori dalla piena facilmente. The third is the exit on the Ayasse gorge, possible only with low flow rate (to be carefully evaluated); in case of big flow pools are turbulence and dangerous. The route inside the gorge has several toboggans and jumps, as well as two rappels. At the end of the gorge, when a metal bridge is visible, continue for about 300 m on the riverbed, until a concrete dike with water catchment on the left. Exit on the edge and reach a path that in 5’ takes back to the parking.
