These thermoplastic elastomers are block copolymers composed of a crystalline segment (hard segment) of polybutylene terephthalate and a soft (amorphous) segment based on long-chain polyether glycols. 01 N Hard segment/Crystal region • Rigid/Strong • Heat resistance • Chemical/Oil Resistance • Processing Soft segment/Amorphous region • Softness • Low Temperature Impact Strength • Elasticity Model of the microstructure and chain conformation in the polyether-polyester block copolymer material Heraflex® E is a thermoplastic "rubber" combining the properties of flexible plastics with the performance of thermoset elastomers. Since Heraflex® E is a thermoplastic elastomer, it can be easily processed using many different techniques, such as injection moulding, extrusion, blow moulding, etc.. Compared to other elastomers, it performs very well over a range of temperatures because its properties remain substantially identical at high and low temperatures. On top of this, it is resistant to many chemicals, solvents and oils. Heraflex® E is generally rated according to its nominal value on the Shore D hardness scale. Heraflex® E è genericamente classificato con la nominale durezza Shore D. However, Shore D hardness is not an accurate parameter for choosing the most suitable material. In general, Shore D hardness is only a rough indicator. To make the best choice of materials, other more precise parameters should be used, such as flexural modulus, low and high temperature stress-strain, impact strength and solvent resistance. Moreover, masterbatches UV, HS, black are available. I dati più utili per determinare tutto ciò sono: Flex modulus versus temperature curves Rilevare il modulo a flessione verso la temperatura stress-strain curves La curva di stress-strain The stiffness of the product depends on the relative proportions of the hard crystalline and soft amorphous segments: La rigidità del prodotto dipende dalla composizione percentuale tra il segmento amorfo e quello cristallino: 05 When the hard block percentage increases stiffness, chemical resistance, creep resistance and load-bearing capacity increase. When the hard block percentage decreases low-temperature impact, flex fatigue, elongation at yield and compression set properties improve. When the soft block percentage is high resistance generally increases. Ad alte proporzioni di parte amorfa aumenta la resistenza all'idrolisi. hydrolysis generalmente Heraflex® E works as an elastomer as long the operational temperature is within the rubbery plateau for each grade. This is shown by the flat portion of the curves in figure 5, typically between temperatures of - 40 and 150°C. The lowest Shore D (39-47) materials are excellent at low temperatures. The 65 Shore D and 77 Shore D grades do not have such high impact strength at low temperatures, but show better high temperature load-bearing capacity, as well as creep and chemical resistance. The 56 Shore D grade is often chosen for its balance between mechanical and elastic properties. Stress-strain curves are important in understanding flexibility (Fig. 6). Usually the lower the stiffness of a material, the lower the yield point and the higher the elongation at yield. This defines the strain range where the material has elastic properties. Heraflex® E's outstanding creep resistance is explained by its excellent retention of mechanical properties under con- Le curve di stress-strain sono importanti per capire i comportamenti elastici (fig. 6). Depending on the grade, it retains its mechanical properties at temperatures from -45 to 150°C. Heraflex® E is the material of choice for applications such as airbag doors where low temperature performance is vital so they can deploy without shattering even at -45°C. Heraflex® E also retains its mechanical properties at high temperatures. For example, it is used for under-the-bonnet applications like air ducts. 2.3.2 Hydrolysis resistance 2.3.2 Resistenza all'idrolisi Heraflex® E has superior hydrolysis resistance in water at room temperature. In hot water hydrolysis could lower its performance. 2.4 ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES 2.4 PROPRIETÀ ELETTRICHE Heraflex® E has good electrical properties. It has excellent surface and volume resistivity, as well as a high resistance, dielectric constant and dissipation factor. Heraflex® E ha buone caratteristiche elettriche. Heraflex® E shows excellent chemical resistance to greases, hydrocarbons, benzenes and oils. On the contrary, if the polarity of the solvent increa- Come detto in precedenza la resistenza chimica migliora con l'aumento dello Shore D. Gli Heraflex® E mostrano eccellenti resistenze chimiche ai grassi, agli idrocarburi, alle benzine ed agli oli. Se la polarità dei solventi aumenta i 08 ses, Heraflex® E becomes less stable, as in the presence of hot water, concentrated acids and bases and alcohols at temperatures above 60°C. Highly chlorinated solvents should never be used. Soft grades are soluble in halogenated hydrocarbons at room temperature, whereas harder grades will only dissolve at high temperatures. Overmoulding with Heraflex® E is also used in applications such as car door latches for sound dampening. Overmoulding can be easily implemented for pieces designed to achieve mechanical bonding, for example, with back drafts or ribs. At temperatures above the softening point, excess water (more than 0.1%) causes hydrolytic degradation of the polymer. At normal processing conditions, a little degradation of the polymer may occur even if the moisture is below 0.1%. If dry polymer in open bags or in the injection moulding machine's hopper is exposed to air with 50% relative humidity, a 0.1% increase in moisture will occur in about 2 hours, while at 100% relative humidity it will take less than an hour. Therefore, pellets which have been exposed to air should be dried before use. To avoid processing problems and any adverse effects on the quality of the moulded parts, moisture absorption prior to moulding should be avoided as much as possible. During storage, the bags or other packaging should be kept sealed and damage free. The following recommendations should be scrupulously observed: Per evitare problemi di processo ed ogni effetto sulla qualità del prodotto processato, l'assorbimento di umidità deve essere limitato al massimo. Durante il magazzinaggio, i sacchi od altro tipo di packaging devono essere mantenuti integri e chiusi. le seguenti raccomandazioni devono essere seguite scrupolosamente: -Bring the pellets into the work area in sealed packages -Portare il materiale nell'ambiente di lavorazione nell'imballo sigillato -Open the packaging just before filling the hopper -Aprire il packaging appena prima del riempimento delle tramogge -Close packaging securely if all of the contents have not been used -Richiudere accuratamente il rimanente materiale nell'imballo originale A molecular sieve dehumidifier should be used if drying is necessary. Typical drying requirements in a dry air/nitrogen flow oven: 3-4 hours at 110°C may be adequate. 4.2 REGRIND 4.2 RIGRANULATO Up to 50% regrind can be added without a significant drop in properties. However the quality of the regrind is vital to ensure the mechanical properties are retained. 5.0 INJECTION MOULDING GUIDE GUIDA PER LO STAMPAGGIO AD INIEZIONE 5.1 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR INJECTION MOULDING 5.1 RACCOMANDAZIONI PER LO STAMPAGGIO 5.2 MACHINERY 5.2 MACCHINARIO A standard injection moulding machine screw should be used. The product weight should be in the range of 40% to 70% of the maximum shot capacity, and thus the machine Vengono usate viti standard per macchine ad iniezione. Il peso del prodotto iniettabile deve essere in un intervallo che va dal 40% al 70% della capacità massima della portata di 16 and relative barrel diameter should be compatible with these values. The screw should have a L/D ratio from 17 to 23 and a thread depth ratio of 1:2; a non-return valve is recommended. Screws for PVC cannot be used. Nozzles should be short to minimize friction and pressure loss. The hopper must have a tight-fitting lid to keep the pellets dry during processing. iniezione e quindi la macchina ed il cilindro devono essere in accordo a quanto sopra. 5.3 PROCESSING CONDITIONS 5.3 CONDIZIONI PER LA TRASFORMAZIONE 5.3.1 Barrel temperature profile 5.3.1 Profilo temperature del cilindro To keep the pellets from sticking to the screw and when higher than recommended melt temperatures are used, a rising barrel temperature profile is normally preferable. Occasionally, a decreasing barrel temperature profile can be used to reduce screw torque or to improve melt homogeneity. Hopper Feeding Section Transition section Metering section Nozzle section 5.3.2 Mould temperature 5.3.2 Temperatura dello stampo A range of temperature between 20°C and 50°C is recommended depending on wall thickness. 5.3.3 Injection and hold pressure (H.P.) 5.3.3 Pressione di iniezione e postpressione (H.P.) For the harder grades of Heraflex® E (above 56D), the hold pressure can be the same as the injection pressure. Too high a hold or injection pressure can cause overpacking and sticking to the mould cavity, especially when using softer grades. The hold pressure should be 40% to 70% lower than the injection pressure to ensure that volumetric shrinkage of the cooling melt can be compensated for. The hold pressure should be high enough to prevent sink marks and must be kept on until the gate freezes; if sink marks or shrinkage voids appear, it is an indication that the hold pressure time is too short. High pressure will reduce apparent mould shrinkage, but can increase flash. sarà settata in modo da seguire un profilo a scendere. 5.3.4 Injection speed 5.3.4 Velocità d'iniezione Injection speed must be high enough to fill the mould quickly in order to avoid premature freezing of the melt. 5.3.5 Back pressure and screw speed 5.3.5 Contropressione e velocità della vite A hydraulic back pressure of 3 to 6 bar is adequate. A screw speed of 30 to 100 rpm is sufficient and will not cause excessive shear heating. 5.3.6 Metering 5.3.6 Trasporto ed omogeneizzazione A buffer of 2 to 5 mm is recommended. Un polmone da 2 a 5 mm è raccomandato. 5.4 MOULD DESIGN 5.4 STAMPO Gating systems: all can be used, including hot runners, but require suffucient heating capacity and deep temperature control. Flash, fan, tab gates are recommended to minimise problems of flow lines. Round and trapezoidal runners should be used. Le dimensioni dei canali e dei punti d'iniezione sono esemplificati sotto in funzione di vari spessori di parete: Wall thickness (mm) Gate diameter/length (mm) 0.7 - 1.2 0.7 - 1.0 / 0.8 - 1.0 1.2 - 3.0 3.0 - 5.0 0.8 - 2.0 / 0.8 - 1.0 1.5 - 3.5 / 0.9 - 1.0 18 5.5 VENTING 5.5 SFOGHI D'ARIA Vents should be located in the mould at the last place to fill. 5.6 EJECTION 5.6 ESTRAZIONE Due to the flexibility of this type of material, the parts in contact with the ejectors must be under uniform load. Fairly large ejectors are needed. 5.7 COOLING 5.7 RAFFREDDAMENTO A good cooling system is an important part of the mould, and this aspect should be discussed with the mould maker in order to achieve the best cycle time and less warpage. 6.0 EXTRUSION GUIDE GUIDA PER L’ESTRUSIONE 6.1 MACHINERY 6.1 MACCHINARIO Heraflex® E can be easily extruded; a conventional single screw extruder is usually used. 6.2 EXTRUDER BARREL 6.2 CILINDRO Barrels for polyamides, polyesters and polyolefins can be used for Heraflex® E. Cilindri per poliammidi, poliesteri e poliolefine sono usati per l'Heraflex® E. 6.3 SCREW DESIGN 6.3 VITE Length to diameter ratios of 24:1 or higher provide the best melt quality for good extrusion. There should be a small clearance between the screw flight and the barrel; the following measurements are recommended: Lo spazio tra il filetto della vite ed il cilindro deve essere piccolo; le raccomandazioni sono: 0.08 - 0.10 mm for extruders with up to a 50 mm screw diameter 0,08 - 0,10 mm per estrusori con viti fino a 50 mm di diametro 0.1 - 0.16 for larger extruders 0,1 - 0,16 per estrusori più grandi Compression ratios should be between 2.4:1 and 3.5:1. Metering channel: if it is so deep, pressure will be inadequate and can cause irregular output, particularly with low-viscosity grades. If the metering channel is too shallow, it can cause overheating of the melt due to excessive shear. 19 FEED SECTION (30% to 40%) D h1 TRANSITION SECTION (25% min) METERING SECTION (25% to 40%) W Pitch h2 Typical dimensions* Diameter (D) (mm) Pitch (P) (mm) Channel depth of feed section (h1) (mm) Channel depth of metering section (h2) (mm) Land width (W) (mm) 30 40 50 60 80 90 120 150 30 40 50 60 80 90 120 150 5.5 6 8 10 11 11 13 15 2 2.2 2.5 3 3.5 3.5 4 4.6 3.5 4 5 6 8 9 11 15 * for guidance only Conventional three-zone single screw Vite convenzionale a 3 zone 6.4 ADAPTOR, HEAD AND DIE 6.4 ADATTATORI, TESTA E FILIERA Adaptors and heads must have a streamlined design. Any obstructions or surface imperfections that might prevent good flow and cause dead spots should be avoided. 20 7.0 TABLE OF TYPICAL PROPERTIES TAVOLA DELLE PROPRIETÀ TIPICHE Properties Rheological MELT FLOW INDEX HARDNESS DUROMETER D TENSILE STRENGTH AT BREAK Mechanical ELONGATION AT BREAK FLEXURAL MODULUS TEAR STRENGTH ABRASION RESISTANCE IZOD NOTCHED IMPACT STRENGTH MELTING TEMPERATURE Thermal VICAT SOFTENING POINT A/50 DENSITY Physical WATER ABSORPTION The above-mentioned technical data is purely indicative and is given without any guarantee.
