Cavalli nella moda?
Come spesso avviene nelle avventure di successo,
tutto è cominciato per caso. Sono stati il mio desiderio di sperimentare con la materia e la tecnica, il
mio amore per la bellezza, l’arte e il colore, che mi
hanno avvicinato alla moda. Ero ancora studente
all’Istituto d’arte di Firenze – la mia specialità erano
le applicazioni tessili della pittura – quando ho
avuto l’idea di realizzare delle stampe floreali su
maglia: una novità assoluta, che mi fu subito contesa dai maggiori maglifici italiani. Poi venne una
“manciata” di magliette serigrafate. Provengo da
una famiglia di artisti, ma cercavo un mezzo d’espressione più diretto e giusto per i tempi – erano
gli anni ‘60 del cambiamento, dopo tutto – e la tshirt mi sembrava il modo perfetto per dare sfogo
alla mia creatività: era come creare un quadro, ma
democratico e indossabile. Con mia grande sorpresa, anche quelle furono un successo immediato, e
mi convinsi che la moda era fatta per me. La mia
avventura vera e propria nella moda, col mio marchio, è cominciata negli anni ‘70, quando ho inventato e brevettato un rivoluzionario procedimento di
stampa su pelle, e creato i miei primi patchwork.
Sono partito dalla tradizione dell’artigianato fiorentino e la ho reinventata. Le radici della mia storia
sono tutte qui: individualismo, voglia di fare, di
scrivere nuove regole.
A cosa si è ispirato nelle sue prime creazioni?
La bellezza della mia Firenze, bellezza che è insieme artistica e naturale, mi ha nutrito e ispirato fin
dagli inizi, e continua a farlo. Arte e natura sono,
tutt’oggi, la base del mio lavoro, l’ispirazione
costante. Insieme, naturalmente, alla bellezza delle
How did Roberto Cavalli’s adventure in fashion begin?
Like it often happens in successful adventures,
everything started by chance. It was my desire to
experiment with matter and technique, my love for
beauty, art and colours that brought me to fashion.
I was still a student at the Florence Art Institute –
my special field was textile applications for painting
– when I got the idea to realize floral prints on
shirts: an absolute novelty, which was quickly contested by the major Italian knitwear factories. The
next step was a “handful” of screen-painted shirts. I
come from a family of artists, but I was looking for
a more direct and right way to express myself for
those times.
It was the 60’s, a time for change after all, and Tshirts seemed to me the perfect outlet for my creativity: it was like creating a painting, but democratic and wearable. To my great surprise even
those were an immediate success, and I was convinced that fashion was fit for me. My real adventure in fashion, with my own brand, started in the
70’s, when I invented and patented a revolutionary
process for printing on leather, and created my first
patchworks. I began from the traditional Florentine
craftsmanship and I reinvented it. The roots to my
story are all here: individualism, the want to do and
to write new rules.
Where did you draw inspiration from for your
first creations?
From the beauty of my Florence, a beauty which is
both artistic and natural; it nourished and inspired
me from the start and so continues. Art and nature
are even today the base of my work, my constant
inspiration.

Quali sono i movimenti artistici che l’hanno
influenzata maggiormente? E se dovesse
associare le sue creazioni a uno di questi,
quale sceglierebbe?
Sono affascinato dall’arte in generale, e per me è
difficile scegliere. Dovendolo fare, direi tutti i movimenti artistici che hanno trovato ispirazione nella
natura, come gli impressionisti e i macchiaioli – una
delle cui figure di spicco, Giuseppe Rossi, è mio
nonno – e poi tutti quelli che hanno fatto del colore un linguaggio, come gli
espressionisti e la pop
art. Ma non posso dimenticare l’arte fiorentina del
Rinascimento, esempio
sommo di bellezza ed
equilibrio. Se fossi un
movimento
artistico,
però, sarei il mio: come
ho già detto, sono un
individualista.
Quali sono le prossime
evoluzioni nel mondo
della moda?
Non è facile prevedere. In
generale, penso ci sia bisogno di recuperare autenticità, che in questi anni di produzione impazzita si
è un po’ persa. Oggi poi i tempi sono duri, e impongono un atteggiamento più aggressivo e mordace,
che anche io ho fatto mio, portando il mio linguag-

gio in una direzione più dinamica e moderna. Le
prossime evoluzioni della moda, quindi, dipendono
da dove andrà questo pazzo mondo. Io mi guardo
sempre intorno, rifletto, e poi creo. Forse proprio
questa capacità di creare il sogno partendo dalla
realtà è uno dei motivi del mio successo.
In un momento di crisi come questo che stiamo passando, come vede il futuro della
moda?
La moda sta vivendo un momento di forte crisi,
anche e soprattutto di immagine. L’urgenza di vendere a ogni costo ha fatto perdere magia, e senza
quella non c’è nulla. Bisogna recuperare fantasia,
originalità e unicità. La crisi per me si vince recuperando le proprie radici, e lavorando su quelle.
Come deve essere la donna Cavalli, che
immagine deve trasmettere?
La donna Cavalli è una persona positiva, solare,
gioiosa e sicura di sé. Personalità e indipendenza
sono i suoi caratteri principali, e ha il glamour nelle
vene. È una donna che ha un rapporto sano e vitale col proprio corpo, e che non ha paura di
mostrarlo e di sedurre. Segue solo le proprie regole, ed è padrona del proprio destino.
Cos’è che fa di Cavalli uno stile inconfondibile?
La gioia di vivere e la positività che trasmette; il
colore e la seduzione. Il mio è un mondo di sogno,
ma un sogno che tutti possono comprendere. Mi
piace sentirmi vicino alla gente, non allontanarla
con invenzioni astruse. La moda, per me, è anche
e soprattutto comunicazione: se non volessi rag-

influenced you, and if you had to associate
your creations to one of these movements
which would you choose?
I am fascinated by art in general, and for me it is
hard to choose. Having to do so, I would say all of
the artistic movements that have found inspiration
in nature, like the impressionists and the macchiaoli
– one of the key figures of which, Giuseppe Rossi, is
my grandfather – and then all those movements
which made colours become a language, like
expressionism and pop art. But I cannot forget the
Florentine art from the Renaissance, the paramount
example of beauty and equilibrium. But if I were an
artistic movement, it would be my own: like I
already said I am an individualistic.
What are the next evolutions in the world of
fashion?
It’s not easy to predict. In general, I think there is
a need to regain authenticity, which in these last
few years of insane production has somewhat been
lost. Today times are hard, and this demands a
more aggressive and cutting attitude, that even I
have shared, bringing my language into a more
dynamic and modern direction.
The next evolutions of fashion, therefore, depend
on what direction this insane world goes in. I always
look around me, think and then create. Maybe one
of the reasons for my success is the capacity to create a dream starting from reality.

Fashion is experiencing a time of serious crisis, of
image above all.
The urgency to sell at every cost has caused the
fashion world to loose its magic, and without that
there is nothing. There is a need to recover fantasy,
originality and uniqueness. For me the crisis can be
won if you regain your own roots, and work on
those.
How is the Cavalli woman, what image should
she convey?
The Cavalli woman is a positive person, cheerful,
joyful, and self-confident. Personality and independence are her principal characteristics, and she has
glamour in her veins.
She is a woman who has a healthy and vital relationship with her own body, and she isn’t afraid to
show it and seduce.
She follows her own rules, and she is the master of
her own destiny.
What is it about Cavalli that makes it such a
unique style?

giungere il pubblico, non ci sarebbe nessun motivo di fare questo lavoro.
C’è qualche personaggio noto che ancora
non ha indossato il suo marchio e che a lei
piacerebbe vestire?
Ho vestito così tanti personaggi famosi che davvero non mi posso lamentare, anche perché molti
sono poi diventati miei amici, e li frequento regolarmente.
Cosa emoziona Roberto Cavalli?
Le cose più semplici e vere. La natura, in particolare: uno spettacolo sorprendente, che mi riempie
sempre il cuore di gioia. Mi piace quella che chiamo la natura nascosta, che spesso sfugge al primo
sguardo, e che seduce. L’Africa, così come la campagna toscana, o i paesaggi del Mediterraneo, mi
regalano emozioni a non finire, che poi trasferisco
nei miei vestiti. Molte delle mie stampe, infatti,
sono rielaborazioni di foto che faccio in giro per il
mondo.
Dove e con chi ama condividere tempo e
passioni?
Sono italiano al cento per cento, e la famiglia è per
me il centro di tutto. Amo condividere tempo e
passioni con mia moglie Eva e i miei figli: nella
nostra casa, o sulla nostra barca. Il lavoro mi porta
dappertutto, in continuazione. La famiglia è il mio
punto fermo: senza sarei perduto.
Il suo Baglietto di 41 metri blu cangiante
racchiude tutte le più moderne e avanzate
strumentazioni di navigazione e optional
tecnologici, abbinati a soluzioni di décor
estremamente creative. Tutti gli ambienti
sono concepiti per rivelare un’attenta cura
del particolare e delle finiture. Da dove
nasce questa sua passione per lo yacht e che
rapporto ha con il mare?
Amo l’avventura, e non c’è niente per me che la
rappresenti meglio del mare. Lo yacht è per me
come una casa mobile sul mare: arredato col mio
inconfondibile stile, con tutti i più recenti ritrovati
tecnologici. Mi piace tantissimo ricevere i miei
amici sul mio yacht: quando ho ospitato a bordo
Sharon Stone, Victoria Beckham e Denzel
Washington abbiamo passato momenti indimenticabili di relax e libertà.
Sappiamo inoltre del suo amore per i gommoni, come nasce questa passione? Cos’ è
che la emoziona di questo mezzo? Quali
sono le particolarità del gommone di
Cavalli?
Amo l’autonomia estrema, la possibilità di muovermi dove e quando voglio e il gommone mi consente assoluta libertà di movimento. Mi è sempre
piaciuto commettere qualche follia in mare e con il
mio gommone Freedom ho fatto un indimenticabile viaggio avventura partendo con due dei miei
figli da Viareggio e arrivando fino a Ibiza dopo 15
giorni di navigazione… da solo con il mare guardando le stelle, che esperienza! Il gommone per
me deve essere così: rapido, scattante, anche un
po’ selvaggio ti dà la possibilità di entrare in perfetta sintonia con la natura.
Oltre alla nuova collezione Roberto Cavalli
casa, ha mai pensato di realizzare una linea
dedicata all’arredo di una barca o di uno
yacht?
Lo stile Cavalli non è solo moda: è uno stile di vita,
un modo di concepire le cose. Non ho ancora pensato di realizzare una linea dedicata all’arredo delle
barche, ma potrei farlo molto presto…perché no!

Tuscany, or the landscapes of the Mediterranean,
give me an endless amount of excitement which I
then transfer into my clothes. Many of my prints are
in fact elaborations of photos that I take around the
world.
Where and with whom do you like to share
your time and passions?
I am 100% Italian, and the family for me is the centre of everything. I like to share time and passions
with my wife Eva and my children: in our house, or
on our boat. Work takes me everywhere in continuation. Family is my reference point: without it I
would be lost.

C’è qualche personaggio noto che ancora
non ha indossato il suo marchio e che a lei
piacerebbe vestire?
Ho vestito così tanti personaggi famosi che davvero non mi posso lamentare, anche perché molti
sono poi diventati miei amici, e li frequento regolarmente.
Cosa emoziona Roberto Cavalli?
Le cose più semplici e vere. La natura, in particolare: uno spettacolo sorprendente, che mi riempie
sempre il cuore di gioia. Mi piace quella che chiamo la natura nascosta, che spesso sfugge al primo
sguardo, e che seduce. L’Africa, così come la campagna toscana, o i paesaggi del Mediterraneo, mi
regalano emozioni a non finire, che poi trasferisco
nei miei vestiti. Molte delle mie stampe, infatti,
sono rielaborazioni di foto che faccio in giro per il
mondo.
Dove e con chi ama condividere tempo e
passioni?
Sono italiano al cento per cento, e la famiglia è per
me il centro di tutto. Amo condividere tempo e
passioni con mia moglie Eva e i miei figli: nella
nostra casa, o sulla nostra barca. Il lavoro mi porta
dappertutto, in continuazione. La famiglia è il mio
punto fermo: senza sarei perduto.
Il suo Baglietto di 41 metri blu cangiante
racchiude tutte le più moderne e avanzate
strumentazioni di navigazione e optional
tecnologici, abbinati a soluzioni di décor
estremamente creative. Tutti gli ambienti
sono concepiti per rivelare un’attenta cura
del particolare e delle finiture. Da dove
nasce questa sua passione per lo yacht e che
rapporto ha con il mare?
Amo l’avventura, e non c’è niente per me che la
rappresenti meglio del mare. Lo yacht è per me
come una casa mobile sul mare: arredato col mio
inconfondibile stile, con tutti i più recenti ritrovati
tecnologici. Mi piace tantissimo ricevere i miei
amici sul mio yacht: quando ho ospitato a bordo
Sharon Stone, Victoria Beckham e Denzel
Washington abbiamo passato momenti indimenticabili di relax e libertà.
Sappiamo inoltre del suo amore per i gommoni, come nasce questa passione? Cos’ è
che la emoziona di questo mezzo? Quali
sono le particolarità del gommone di
Cavalli?
Amo l’autonomia estrema, la possibilità di muovermi dove e quando voglio e il gommone mi consente assoluta libertà di movimento. Mi è sempre
piaciuto commettere qualche follia in mare e con il
mio gommone Freedom ho fatto un indimenticabile viaggio avventura partendo con due dei miei
figli da Viareggio e arrivando fino a Ibiza dopo 15
giorni di navigazione… da solo con il mare guardando le stelle, che esperienza! Il gommone per
me deve essere così: rapido, scattante, anche un
po’ selvaggio ti dà la possibilità di entrare in perfetta sintonia con la natura.
Oltre alla nuova collezione Roberto Cavalli
casa, ha mai pensato di realizzare una linea
dedicata all’arredo di una barca o di uno
yacht?
Lo stile Cavalli non è solo moda: è uno stile di vita,
un modo di concepire le cose. Non ho ancora pensato di realizzare una linea dedicata all’arredo delle
barche, ma potrei farlo molto presto…perché no!

I am 100% Italian, and the family for me is the centre of everything. I like to share time and passions
with my wife Eva and my children: in our house, or
on our boat. Work takes me everywhere in continuation. Family is my reference point: without it I
would be lost.
