FOGOLAR CALENDAR CORRECTIONS ************************************ The next general assembly will be on Sunday, January 28. ************************************ Carnevale will be on Sunday, February 25, not on February 18 as was indicated in the calendar. ************************************ The Spring Members' Banquet will be held on Sunday, May 27 this year, not on Saturday as was indicated in calendar. We sincerely apologize for the errors in this year’s calendar. Carnevale The holidays are over now and we can look forward to longer days and eventually Spring. For myself, after the shortest day of the year has passed, I start to feel better, the earth is gravitating towards longer days and a new cycle. The Friulano saying is “Les zornadis a si slunğhin cusì a Nadâl un pid di ğhal, a Prin dal’An un pid di čhan, e L’Epifanie un pid di strie.” The Christmas Member’s Banquet was a big success; 520 people were present, the choir was super delightful and the food was great. Lots of young people participated and the music catered to them. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN 2007 Singer/songwriter "Miani" from Udine, Fruili, Italy will be performing at the Fogolar Furlan Windsor on the eve of Friday, February 2, 2007. Miani is a winner of the Festival di Sanremo 1985. There are two ticket options. Option A costs $15 and includes the concert only which starts at 9PM. Ticket Option B costs $25 and includes both the concert itself and a pre-concert meet-and-greet with Miani, where he will be available to speak with and to sign autographs. The meet-andgreet also includes an extravagant antipasto bar (see advertisement on page 3 for full details). We are also looking for about 12-15 volunteers to take tickets and watch the entrances for the evening. Anyone wishing to help out can contact Enrico DeCecco at [email protected]. On February 11, we are holding the Oustanding Volunteers Banquet, please confirm your attendance according to your invitation. Tickets are $43 per person and can be purchased at the Fogolar Office or by contacting one of the hunters. Then, as usual, we roll along with Carnevale, Easter festivities, the Member’s Spring Banquet, Sunday, May 27, followed by Father’s Day celebrations, and that wraps up our first six months of the year. P O P C O R APPRECIATION NIGHT Friday, January 26 Events, anniversaires and occasions keep the Fogolar busy and we are grateful when the membership participates and enjoys the festivities. CARNEVALE Sunday, February 25 This year's Carnevale event is being held in the Friuli hall on Sunday, February 25, 2007 at 3PM. There are 5 new games this year and we've been hard at work refurbishing some of the older games. As we did last year, we are asking only canned goods for admission. This year we will be selling and raffling off some youth-size Fogolar Furlan T-shirts and the Women's Association will be selling Crostoli. Page 3 Fogolâr News YOUTH GROUP PER I SOCI E AMICI www.ffygwindsor.com DOWNTOWN MISSION The Youth Group would like to thank all of the members and staff who donated over 100 canned goods for the Downtown Mission. We would also like to thank the Fogolar for providing the pasta lunch which was served by the Group. The Youth Group also donated cans and money raised from the Halloween Party Costume Contest. The 8 members from the Youth Group who volunteered at the Mission were given various tasks around the building such as sorting through canned goods and preparing lunch. Everyone who participated had lots of fun and look forward to doing it again next year. The day was a huge success and could not have been accomplished without the support of the Fogolar Membership. AFTER CHRISTMAS BASH On January 5, the Youth Group held their 2nd Annual After Christmas Bash. The evening was themed as a Casino Night, where guests played Poker and Blackjack to receive tickets for the raffle. The Committee was pleased with an excellent turn out and guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and danced all night. THANK YOU FOR OUR FIRST YEAR! The Youth Group would like to thank the Fogolar Board of Directors and the General Membership for their support in our first year of existence. Without this support the Group would not have been as successful as it was. The Youth Group looks forward to continuing to work with the members to ensure the involvement of the younger generation in the club. OUTGOING AND NEW COMMITTEE I would like to thank the first Committee and co-founding members of the Youth Group. Together we brought an important aspect of membership back to the Fogolar. Without the support and involvement of the Committee, our members would not have had such an amazing year. I would like to thank the outgoing committee members, Sandra Bortolin, Diana Volpatti, Brent Hudson, Tony Bagnarol, and Dianella Mussio for an excellent year. I truly enjoyed working together in bringing the Youth Group back to the Fogolar. I would like to welcome Rob Perissinotti (Vice President), Daniela Marier (Secretary), Eric Grenier (Events & PR), and Barry Pizzuti (Treasurer) to the Committee and look forward to working with you over the two years. On behalf of the Women's Association Executive we wish everyone good health and peace throughout the 2007 year! December was a very busy month for the Women's Association. This year we arranged for t h e G o t i s d i Rosade Children's Choir to perform a christmas concert for the residents and families of Windsor Western H o s p i t a l . O n Wednesday evening, December 6, thirty children from the choir sang a medley of Christmas songs in the Windsor Western hospital auditorium. The performance was well received by the residents, as many were seen joining in by singing along with the choir. A very beautiful evening to see the interaction of young children with the older patients that are not able to get around. After the performance the children's choir was treated to cookies and juice by the staff at Windsor Western. Great job to all of you! Another beautiful performance by the choir was evident at the Fogolar’s Christmas Party on December 23. The choir is truly blending well together and their performances are very entertaining. Keep up the great work. A special thank you to Amelia Pavan for her passion, and many hours devoted with love to keep the choir alive! Thank you also goes out to the group of ladies who sewed the skirts for the choir. On Sunday December 10, the Women's Association celebrated Christmas by attending the Windsor Symphony at the Chrysler Theatre. A group of 58 ladies attended the Symphony Family Christmas concert and then returned to the Fogolar for hors d’oeuvres, panettone, torrone, wine, and comraderie as we exchanged Christmas greetings. O n D e c e m b e r 14, the Women's Association Executive, along with Larry Masotti, V.P. of the Fogolar, were invited to attend a reception in honour of the significant contribution made to Hotel Dieu to purchase the wheelchairs. The Women's Association was presented with a beautiful plaque which will be displayed at the Fogolar, inscribed and symbolizing the "Tree of Life." All the way from the North Pole, Santa and Mrs. Claus came to the Fogolar on Sunday, December 17. Over 100 children with their parents attended the annual Fogolar Furlan Christmas Party. All the children in attendance received gifts from Santa and enjoyed the Mad Scientist and Boppo the face-painting clown. Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus were happy to see so many good little boys and girls at the Fogolar! Our next general assembly will be on Thursday, January 25, 2007. An old person, retired from work, lives on memories of past life, some happy and many times sad. Today, thinking about my grandfather, in my memories I see him when he was just past fifty years old, dressed in his usual grey vest, stubble of three or four days on his chin, thread bare pants, home made wooden shoes, and a hat that was new eight years ago. How he seemed much beyond his years! Of his teeth there were only six remaining. Fortunately three were near each other so that he was able to pinch his pipe between them. The pipe was usually not lit, unless he was smoking the bark from the grape vines, since even the cheapest pipe tobacco was too expensive for him. Speaking of grape vines, the few that he had were intermixed with mulberry trees, in a line in the middle of a corn field. Nonno loved his wine, and starting in August he would wet his feet in the morning dew while taking a turn around the vines, happy to see the first grapes starting to turn red, and licking his moustache in anticipation of the wine that would follow. Meanwhile, the barrel in the cellar, empty since January, was so dry that it was losing its bands. How much thirst Nonno suffered! In autumn the corn was harvested. Immediately after, the stalks had to be cut in order to till the soil and plant the wheat. All the strenuous labour, of course, was done by hand without the benefit of any machinery. The times were miserable. There was a depression, no television, not even a radio. Not having electricity, at night they would have to use an oil lamp, its glow barely enough for the ladies huddled nearby to spin wool, make sweaters and socks, or mend pants. Compared to those times, we are all rich. The newspaper he did not have either, not that he needed it, since poor Nonno was illiterate. From the time he was very young, he escorted the sheep and goats to the pasture. To school, to tell the truth, he went for some months, but then the spelling book was not seen again; rumour has it that the billy goat ate it! Nonno was an honest man, respected for his wisdom and esteemed because he treated all his family with fairness and justice. This is a snapshot of all our grandfathers' lives; poor humble men, honest workers that made many sacrifices for the good of their families. DID YOU KNOW... That volunteers contributed over 2100 hours of time and labour to the Fogolar Furlan during 2006.
