The art of LOCO LOCO has been Shozo Shimamoto’s favorite disciple and she is cooperating even at present with him (co-founder after the war of the Japanese Gutai group). Since the beginning LOCO conceives a new and very lively kind of art. She uses plastic or paper cups as means of expression and communication, instead of a classic canvas. The use of paper cups made LOCO quite famous in Japan as she often appears on television. LOCO’s art expresses the joy of living and the importance of relations between people. It is a very simple and direct art. Her works on canvas are a subsequent elaboration and, for this, at first they may look difficult to understand, but they are only a mirror of her lively performances. LOCO’s works are not intended to be explained with many words. Only to be seen and felt with the heart. LOCO Maggio 2009 Me, who loved paintings and jokes as a child “When I grow up I will be an artist! What a wonderful dream! Yes, but how can I make it true?” When I was in high school, a teacher suggested that I enter a university of fine arts. That would be a way to become an artist. I gathered some initial information and found a cram school nearby. I soon went there, but I was astonished at the scene waiting for me! There were students reproducing the assigned matter, such as plaster figures or still lifes. It was a line of similar paintings with the same style. Not only that, but the students had pained looks, as they were on the verge of crying. “What is this?” I thought. “Is this a rule to be respected?” However, after attending for some months, I became like the others, having a hard time to paint with the same style that is preferred for the fine arts in Japan. The time at last came to take the admission exam, and I was still thinking whether or not painting in those conditions made sense. Unfortunately, I failed—and not just once, but three times, reaching 21 years old. It was then that by chance I found a book by Shozo Shimamoto in a library, while I was wondering whether it was still possible to become an artist. In the book, I found the answers to all my doubts. I wanted to make his acquaintance and I first wrote him a letter, and then made the 700-km trip from Ibaraki Prefecture to Osaka. “Your paintings won’t have a future if you go to university. If you want to be an artist, you can become one now,” he told me. “Really, may I?” I replied, surprised. “Remember that to become an artist you don’t need anybody’s permission. Do you?” he said. And so, from that same day, I began a new chapter by living in Osaka. While working with Shimamoto, I succeeded in immediately finding my originality as an artist. I brimmed with ideas and I was happy as ever to create freely—just the opposite of when I was at the cram school. In that period, I understood that to paint with perfect technique is not the important thing. Since the spectator gives his time to the artist when looking at the works, for me, it is better to offer a “?”, or a “!”, or a smile, with my works. I think that it is my role as an artist to communicate joy through art. When I was a child, another thing I loved, besides painting, was joking. Jokes have innumerable forms and do not have a fixed style. A joke can be made out of any situation. I also get excited when thinking something up, and it must be so, otherwise I could not communicate anything to the viewer. It is also for this reason that I pay attention to preserving that part of my childish way of feeling. Andrea, my husband and art coordinator, collects all the sketches I leave here and there at home, without me realizing it. They are mostly scribbles I make while I am at the phone, but maybe it is also thanks to those ideas that my art is not stubbornly fixed in a pattern, because there is something interesting just where I did not notice. Andrea Mardegan The colors of LOCO People go to the museum, but the works, that are the reason they go, are kept at a safe distance, and the guards check that nobody touches the works of art, and often they also check that nobody takes photographs. Probably, the artist made those works to express a part of himself, or to communicate something. In the social reality however, works of art become objects to be protected and preserved as long as possible—for everyone. LOCO wants to express joy through her works, and unfortunately, the rope and all the protection in the museum would be a limit to this joy. About that, LOCO has thought that if a visitor is not permitted to fully enjoy a work, even if he goes to a museum, then it will be the work that visits the people. This is the meaning of LOCO’s main performance: to put on the head a big sphere made of cups, and travel many places, mainly in Japan, such as shopping centers and more traditional shops, roads, rural areas, local festivals… For this artistic performance she has become known even on TV with the name of Paper Cup Artist LOCO, in Japan. Her works of art are another way to express the same joy and simplicity and they may be thought of as a fruit of the temporary interruption of the performances in this period of maternity. At any rate, the message does not change, as the energy appears from the colors used, and the absence of a protective glass in the frame, along with the relatively small size of her works, are a way to get people closer. Therefore, the message is similar to the one expressed by the sphere of cups. This sphere makes the head look big, transforms an adult into a child, and even very shy people become curious and try to wear it. It may be the fact that the sphere hides the face and perhaps frees the person from the embarrassment of doing an unusual gesture, of dancing or yelling. Here in Japan, I saw very mild and introverted people who had the sphere of cups put on their heads by LOCO, and they unbelievably started singing and hopping. The rope in the museum has fallen down, the guards have gone away, and on the photographs there are the colors of LOCO. Francesca Baboni, Stefano Taddei The fabolous word of LOCO Loco style looks to the tradition of manga comics from a pop point of view with a touch of irony and a very solid intellectual path behind. Loco is the favorite student of Shozo Shimamoto with whom today still collaborates artistically. Her style can be considered a real connection between the past and the present of the Gutai style. Loco combines the remarkable expression of her masters with a modern interpretation which makes itself explicit by different techniques. In her works on canvas and paper, the young artist expresses her imaginative versatility by colorful pop images ( resembling with acid colours the Japanese manga works),and by works in which she uses the rain (the natural element of the tradition of the Gutai masters). The little ball, an emblematic sign of her work and theme of her poetry, together with bright and explosives colours is one of the main elements that represents her research: spontaneity and joyfulness. Even in the ironic pop videos JAPANORAMA (where you see the participation in a program led by Takeshi Kitano as well) people-automatons wear instead of the heads big balls made of plastic glasses. Loco directly refers to the theatrical and performative tradition of Gutai, when the men - ball interact nicely with the city and its inhabitants at the rythm of electronic or traditional Japanese music among modern psychedelic atmospheres and suggestions from video clips. In the fabulous world of Loco, where all is joy and color, there is no space for anxiety or sadness of living. All her works have a strong communicative power that emotionally involves the audience : the self portraits in oil paint where the author portrays herself as a cartoon child in different situations; the funny faces in ink on fabric outlined with a single mark; the little balls running from one painting to another under the canvans and emerging all of sudden sudden. The apparent lightness of the image hides a much more complex and articulated investigation. The artist speaks of the"joke" as one of the ways of interpreting her work, reminding us how art is a sudden and unexpected apparition to be faced with a laugh and not to be taken too seriously, just like life. Spazio Arte dei Mori is located in Campo dei Mori, close the house of Tintoretto, not very far from the ancient church of Madonna dell'Orto. Campo dei Mori is named after the eighteenth century carved statues of the Mori within the walls of the buildings that surround the Campo itself. It is considered one of the most charming and fascinating places of Cannaregio. Lo Spazio Arte, on the ground floor of a house of the eighteenth century, is situated directly on the Campo dei Mori. It has been recently renovated maintaining all the original shape of a Venetian house. Lo Spazio Arte dei Mori can be considered a center of contemporary art exhibition dedicated primarily to promote awareness of Italian and foreign artists, both emerging and well known.
