Reason For Wanting To Receive The Award

Our History
The ItalianAmerican Cultural
Society was established in
1957 by a small group of
dedicated visionaries. They
dreamed of developing a
meeting place where Italian
Americans could gather to
preserve their traditions,
values, and customs. These
concerned few planned
a
community-oriented
structure in which to develop
cultural
programs
and
educational services attuned
to enhancing the lifestyles of
all Italian Americans, indeed
the entire community. The
IACS became a tax-exempt
foundation in 1962.
Our Italian culture abounds
in a rich heritage: from our
earliest ancestry in and
around the ancient hills of
Rome, through the building
and restructuring of the
Italian American Cultural Society
Renaissance Period, to the
evolution of the modern
world in our land across
the sea and in America, our
new home, land of our hopes
and dreams. We are the
guardians and protectors of
this culture. We are today’s
Italian Americans, a creative
and productive people, filled
with the life and energy that
exemplify vibrant and deeprooted traditions, nourished
and preserved over the years,
which are our legacy today.
Operated by the Italian
American Cultural Society,
the Center is governed by a
Board of Directors elected by
the membership. Directors
serve
voluntarily
and
receive no compensation.
An advisory board of
directors, comprised of
representatives from various
clubs and associations,
and advisors from the
academic community freely
donate their knowledge and
expertise. A full-time staff
of administrative, clerical,
and maintenance personnel
is employed by the Society.
The Center’s primary sources
of revenue are received from
membership dues, fees for
the use of the facilities,
payments for educational
courses
and
programs,
and contributions from
individuals, organizations,
and foundations.
It is the Center’s privilege to
host many diverse community
activities throughout the year,
such as the Festa Italiana
in summer and the annual
Columbus Day Celebration.
We proudly share our culture
through musical programs,
cultural/heritage
lecture
series, film festivals, art
exhibits and displays, and
patriotic observations, such
as the Festa della Repubblica
MARCH 2015
Italiana in June. Many social
events are sponsored by
either the Society or by other
groups and associations.
These projects and events
supply resources necessary
to maintain the facility
and supplement revenues
produced by the Center.
The Center sponsors one of
the largest Senior Citizens
groups in the metro Detroit
area. Members attend monthly
meetings, which feature
interesting and informative
speakers and entertainment.
A busy schedule of trips and
activities is maintained, such
as outings to restaurants,
casinos, theaters, historic
churches. The Seniors are
an integral part of the IACS,
volunteering at events and
supporting the Center.
In the summer months
members can gather at the
Center to play bocce on our
two outdoor bocce courts. In
the fall and winter months,
Member’s Night attracts
them to the Center to play
games and cards or just
socialize.
The
Italian
American
newspaper,
underwritten
by the Center, is a monthly,
bilingual publication that
provides Italian Americans
and others in the metro area
with information about the
Center and its events, in
addition to news and views
about Italy. In addition, it
features events happening
out in the community. The
paper also serves as a public
relations tool for many
smaller Italian organizations
to help promote activities
and programs.
Italian language classes are
offered at the Center through
the Education Department.
This is a five year program
covering all four language
skills, listening, speaking,
reading, and writing. Our
instructors are highly qualified
in teaching philosophy,
methods, and proper use of
materials. Italian Education
Scholarships sponsored by
the Italian American Cultural
Society offer a wonderful
opportunity to high school
students (9th through 12th
grade) to obtain two semesters
of Italian language at the
Italian American Cultural
Center in Clinton Township.
Five IACS scholarships
consisting of two semesters
of Italian education are
awarded (September – April).
The winners of scholarships
receive a certificate towards
continuing
the
Italian
education classes at the Italian
American Cultural Center and
a letter of recommendation
for college.

My, My, My! Captain Jack’s Seafood Table
Makes A Big Splash!
The 4th annual Captain
Jack’s Seafood Table was
created as a fundraiser benefiting the IACS Italian Education scholarship program.
The response from attendees
of the event over the years
has grown considerably – attracting passionate lobster
and other seafood lovers.
On Friday, February 6, the
seafood gala featured a
menu put together by executive chef and banquet general manager Alex Lozovoj.
Highlights included a choice
of seafood appetizers, chilled
peel-and-eat gulf shrimp;
fresh shucked oysters and
claims, crab legs; steamed
one pound whole Maine
lobster; smoked salmon;
seafood salad, and so much
more…Followed by
a variety of desserts,
decadent chocolate
fountain; espresso
and cappuccino. In
addition to enjoying
delicious seafood,
there was dancing to
the live music performed by the very
popular One Man
Band.
The seafood gala is just the
beginning of the many exclusive events scheduled
in 2015 that the IACS will
host at the Italian American
Cultural Society Banquet &
Conference Center.

San Francesco Church Honors
Richard & Ann Burrell, Gordon McCarty and Stanley Santilla
San Francesco Church in
Clinton Township will host
its annual Dinner Dance
Sunday, March 22, 2015 at
Penna’s of Sterling.
This event features a sitdown dinner and entertainment by Pino Marelli.
Doors open promptly at 3:00
p.m. Tickets are $50 in advance; no tickets will be
sold at the door. For tickets/
information call Geraldine
Calderone 586-294-8698 or
Sharon Ruggiroli 313-8825132.
This event is a fundraiser all
proceeds go directly to the
maintenance and preservation of the church. At this
year’s Dinner Dance, San
Francesco Church will be
honoring Richard Burrell
and Ann Scianna-Burrell,
Gordon McCarty, and Stanley Santilla.
Richard (Rick) Burrell and
Ann Scianna-Burrell have
been friends to San Francesco Parish for many years.
Rick has a strong commitment to family, faith and respect. He is hard working,
faithful, respectful, generous, and honest. You can
always find him at church
when there is a plumbing
problem that needs to be repaired, or to simply help out
in whatever way he can. He
is also very active in the San
Francesco Food Drive.
Richard and Ann have been
married 34 years and have
one daughter Maria Alexandra age 19, who is currently
attending College.
Ann
helps in many areas at San
Francesco Church. You can
find her on Tuesday evenings
at church in the position of
CCD Coordinator handling
all aspects of the CCD Program. This involves making
sure the children/adults in
the program are instructed
traditional doctrine according to the teachings of the
Catechism of the Catholic
Church. She also heads the
Food for the Poor Project,
Giving Tree Project, is a
member of the Parish Council, Dinner Dance Committee, Feast of San Francesco
Committee, assists with First
Communions,
Confirmations and Marriages within
the Parish, and handles directives consistent with the
Archdiocese of Detroit.
Richard and Ann have a
strong devotion to the theological virtues of faith, hope
and charity and enjoy giving
back to others who are less
fortunate in the community
and work diligently in this
area. They are supporters
of San Francesco Parish and
are always willing to assist in
any way they can. San Francesco Church honors and
thanks them for their commitment to their faith and to
San Francesco Parish.
Gordon McCarty has been
a member of San Francesco
Parish since 1999. He has
been active in the church
for many years, helping in
any way he can. He guides
and supports the direction of
Alter Servers, and proudly
serves mass alongside his
two sons.
Gordon is a true example of
a family man who leads by
his faith. He is married to
his wife Jamie McCarty and
together they have five beau-
tiful children. Alyssa age 20
attends Macomb College,
Brenden age 14 attends Austin Catholic Academy, Haley
age 11, Matthew age 9, and
Savanna age 8, are all homeschooled.
Robert Belarmine
Catholic School through
grade 4, and the remainder
of his education through the
Redford Public School System. He spent his teen years
away from the church teachings trying to find himself.
Gordon works full time as a
Director of Logistics at Garden Fresh Salsa and occasionally as a Police Reserve
for the City of Hamtramck.
In his spare time, he is a
committed family man, very
active in his sons’ sports and
enjoys coaching baseball and
basketball games. Gordon
has been active at San Francesco Church for many years
and is an excellent example
of a person’s personal commitment to faith and family,
and for that reason San Francesco Parish honors him.
Stanley worked for L’Anse
Creuse Public School System as a Bus Driver “for
22 wonderful years.” He
lived near St. Jude Catholic Church and realized he
never forgot his catholic upbringing and he needed to be
closer to God, and the way to
do it was to become a member of St. Jude Parish. With
some training and help from
Father Colum Morgan he became a Eucharistic Minister
and a Lector - Reader, which
he truly enjoyed.
Stanley Ronald Santilla
was baptized August 3, 1941
at San Francesco Church in
Detroit by Reverend Livius
Paoli. Stanley went to St.
After some time passed Stanley and his mother moved
to Clinton Township, his
life came full circle and he
was back at San Francesco
Church as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. He now
has a permanent job dedicated to San Francesco Church
where he truly enjoys the
remnants of the original
church which was on the
corner of Brewster and Rivard in Detroit. San Francesco Parish honors Stanley
Santilla and would like to
sincerely thank him for his
commitment to his faith,
hard work, and general commitment to San Francesco
Church.
The number of hours volunteered by this group of people
is immeasurable and we are
blessed as a parish to have
their leadership and support.
Please help us celebrate this
special event honoring these
upstanding citizens of our
community, and to support
San Francesco Church as all
proceeds go directly to the
maintenance and preservation of the church.

È morto a Montecarlo,

Le Regioni d’Italia
A cura di Sandra Tornberg
Con
questa
edizione
iniziamo una nuova serie
rappresentando le regioni
d’Italia. Si comincia con
l’Abruzzo, non perché è la
regione della mia eredità,
ma perché è la prima in
ordine alfabetico.
della
Dal 1948 al 1963, formava
insieme al Molise la regione
Abruzzi e Molise; ma già nel
1233, con la costituzione
del Giustizierato d’Abruzzo
ad opera di Federico II
di Svevia, per la prima
volta nella storia, venne
identificato formalmente
quel territorio che da
quel momento in avanti
verrà conosciuto come
Abruzzo.
Occupa una superficie
di 10.862 km² e ha una
popolazione di 1.332.689
abitanti. È diviso in
quattro
province:
L’Aquila,
Chieti,
Pescara e Teramo, e in
305 comuni. Confina a
nord con le Marche, ad
est con il mare Adriatico,
ad ovest con il Lazio e
a sud con il Molise. Si
divide
principalmente
in una parte costiera nel
versante orientale con le
spiagge
dell’Adriatico
e in una parte montuosa
dal lato occidentale con il
Gran Sasso d’Italia, 2912

più alto degli Appennini
continentali.

del continente europeo;
sul versante settentrionale
del Gran Sasso si trova il
ghiacciaio Calderone. E’
tra le regioni italiane con il
più alto numero di località,
ben 21, presenti nel
prestigioso Club “I borghi
più belli d’Italia”.
Quando
il
giornalista
e
diplomatico
Primo
Levi visitò la regione,
colpito dalla sua bellezza
e dall’animo dei suoi
abitanti, definì l’Abruzzo
“forte e gentile”, il titolo
di un suo racconto di
viaggio pubblicato nel
1882 . Quella citazione è
da quel momento il motto
della regione e dei suoi
cittadini.
Fino agli anni ‘50 l’Abruzzo
era una delle regioni più
povere del Sud Italia, ma
dal 1950 l’Abruzzo ha
avuto una crescita costante
del PIL (Prodotto Interno
Lordo). Nel 1951 il reddito
pro capite è stato del 53%;
nel 1971 del 65%, mentre
nel 1994 si è attestato al
76%; nel 2006 è arrivato al
84,4 dando all’Abruzzo il

più alto PIL pro capite del
Sud Italia, che ha superato
il tasso di crescita di ogni
altra regione d’Italia; la
costruzione delle autostrade
Roma-Teramo (Autostrada
A24) e Roma-AvezzanoPescara (Autostrada A25)
ha aperto la regione a nuovi
investimenti favorendo una
maggiore crescita della
produttività della regione,
che è diventata così una
delle più alte tra le regioni
dell’Italia Meridionale.
Secondo Eurostat nel 2009
l’Abruzzo aveva un reddito
pro capite a parità di potere
di acquisto pari al 84,0%
della media dell’Unione
europea, il più alto reddito
tra le regioni del Sud Italia;
le regione italiane più
povere erano la Sicilia e la
Calabria con il 68%, le più
ricche erano la Provincia
Autonoma di Bolzano con
il 148% e Valle d’Aosta e
Lombardia con il 133%.
Il Terremoto dell’Aquila
del 6 aprile 2009 ha
determinato una forte
frenata dell’economia, la
cui ripresa, secondo degli
esperti, è ancora piuttosto
incerta. Tuttavia, secondo
le statistiche di fine 2010,
sembra che l’economia
abruzzese
si
stia
riprendendo,

i dati negativi per quanto
riguarda
l’occupazione,
facendo sperare in un
futuro economico più
roseo; infatti a fine anno
2010 l’Abruzzo ha fatto
registrare una crescita
pari al 1,47% ponendo la
regione quarta tra le regioni
italiane con i maggiori tassi
di crescita annuale dopo il
Lazio, la Lombardia e la
Calabria. Anche nel 2011
l’Abruzzo conferma la
crescita economica, con un
+2,3% percentuale più alta
tra le regioni dell’Italia
Meridionale;
inoltre
nell’anno 2013 la regione
si conferma la regione più
ricca del Meridione d’Italia
con il Pil pro capite più alto
tra le regioni del sud Italia
(21.845 euro).

Il Volo: felici, ma non chiamateci “tenorini”
Nek li ha criticati, a
molti la loro vittoria
a Sanremo non
è andata a genio
mentre altri ancora
hanno cercato di
prendersi il merito
di averli scoperti.
Piero
Barone,
Ignazio Boschetto
e Gianluca Ginoble,
in arte Il Volo, tirano
dritto, forti di milioni
di visualizzazioni
su YouTube ma
soprattutto
dei
tanti fan dagli Usa
al Venezuela. Ieri
a Messaggero Tv
hanno risposto alle
loro domande. Perché
i “Volovers” (così si
chiamano)
«vengono
prima di tutto». Ma non
hanno perso occasione per
togliersi anche qualche
sassolino dalla scarpa.
Questi tre ragazzi che
insieme non arrivano a 60
anni sono già abituati a
cantare davanti a migliaia
di persone, in concerti da
centinaia di migliaia di
euro a volta. Il carattere,
per forza di cose, non
gli manca. Così, quando
qualcuno gli ricorda la frase
di sfida di Nek («Vediamo
dove arriverete») la replica
è scherzosa ma secca: «Ha
rosicato ma lo capiamo:
suona da tanti anni ed è
arrivato secondo dopo di
noi che siamo molto più
giovani».
Ad ogni modo l’Ariston è
già il passato: «Guardiamo
avanti e ci preoccupiamo
solo del nostro pubblico»,
dice Il Volo, orgoglioso
di
aver
«finalmente»
conquistato l’Italia dopo il
successo negli States e in
altre varie parti del mondo.
«In America - racconta
Gianluca,
unico
non
siciliano del trio - i nostri
fan sono per la maggior
parte adulti. Qua invece
c’è un po’ di tutto». E si
vede anche dalle decine
di domande arrivate da
ragazzine già infatuate
per questi tre giovanissimi
dalla voce potente (li hanno
ribattezzati
”tenorini”,
ma il soprannome non li
soddisfa: «Siamo due tenori
e un baritono», precisano).
«Vi siete mai innamorati?»,
chiede una Volover. «È mai
accaduto con una fan?»,
si spinge a domandare
un’altra. E la risposta a
entrambe le domande è
«no». Al massimo «qualche
cotta». «Siamo in giro per il
mondo nove mesi all’anno,
è difficile avere delle
storie vere...». L’unico
che ammette qualcosa è
Boschetto: «Ma ero troppo
piccolo», sorride.
Il
“Grande
amore”,
insomma, fuori dal palco
sanremese non è ancora
arrivato». C’è tempo solo
per la musica.
E ognuno ha
i suoi gusti.
«Se
poteste
incontrare un
personaggio
del passato chi
scegliereste?»,
è la domanda
di
Miriana,
da
Torino.
Barone, il più
giovane: «Elvis
e
Pavarotti».
Gianluca,
20
anni sul palco
dell’Ariston
l’11 febbraio
scorso: «Frank
S i n a t r a » .
Ignazio, il più ironico
e scanzonato: «Il mio è
ancora vivo quindi spero
di
incontrarlo:
Stevie
Wonder».
Con la vittoria a Sanremo
Il Volo si è guadagnato la
possibilità di partecipare
agli Eurovision. Poi partirà
il tour in Italia. Il 24 giugno
suoneranno all’Auditorium
Parco della musica di
Roma. E poi Trieste,
Taormina,
Viareggio...
«Non vedevamo l’ora
di tornare qua e adesso
non vediamo l’ora di fare
un concerto e sentire le
nostre fan cantare ”Grande
Amore”».
Il
futuro?
«Continueremo a suonare in
tutto il mondo, ma speriamo
che l’Italia diventi sempre
più importante nel nostro
lavoro».
