They dreamed of developing a meeting place where Italian Americans could gather to preserve their traditions, values, and customs. These concerned few planned a community-oriented structure in which to develop cultural programs and educational services attuned to enhancing the lifestyles of all Italian Americans, indeed the entire community. The IACS became a tax-exempt foundation in 1962. Our Italian culture abounds in a rich heritage: from our earliest ancestry in and around the ancient hills of Rome, through the building and restructuring of the Italian American Cultural Society Renaissance Period, to the evolution of the modern world in our land across the sea and in America, our new home, land of our hopes and dreams. We are the guardians and protectors of this culture. We are today’s Italian Americans, a creative and productive people, filled with the life and energy that exemplify vibrant and deeprooted traditions, nourished and preserved over the years, which are our legacy today. Operated by the Italian American Cultural Society, the Center is governed by a Board of Directors elected by the membership. Directors serve voluntarily and receive no compensation. An advisory board of directors, comprised of representatives from various clubs and associations, and advisors from the academic community freely donate their knowledge and expertise. A full-time staff of administrative, clerical, and maintenance personnel is employed by the Society. The Center’s primary sources of revenue are received from membership dues, fees for the use of the facilities, payments for educational courses and programs, and contributions from individuals, organizations, and foundations. It is the Center’s privilege to host many diverse community activities throughout the year, such as the Festa Italiana in summer and the annual Columbus Day Celebration. We proudly share our culture through musical programs, cultural/heritage lecture series, film festivals, art exhibits and displays, and patriotic observations, such as the Festa della Repubblica MARCH 2015 Italiana in June. Many social events are sponsored by either the Society or by other groups and associations. These projects and events supply resources necessary to maintain the facility and supplement revenues produced by the Center. The Center sponsors one of the largest Senior Citizens groups in the metro Detroit area. Members attend monthly meetings, which feature interesting and informative speakers and entertainment. A busy schedule of trips and activities is maintained, such as outings to restaurants, casinos, theaters, historic churches. The Seniors are an integral part of the IACS, volunteering at events and supporting the Center. In the summer months members can gather at the Center to play bocce on our two outdoor bocce courts. In the fall and winter months, Member’s Night attracts them to the Center to play games and cards or just socialize. The Italian American newspaper, underwritten by the Center, is a monthly, bilingual publication that provides Italian Americans and others in the metro area with information about the Center and its events, in addition to news and views about Italy. In addition, it features events happening out in the community. The paper also serves as a public relations tool for many smaller Italian organizations to help promote activities and programs. Italian language classes are offered at the Center through the Education Department. This is a five year program covering all four language skills, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Our instructors are highly qualified in teaching philosophy, methods, and proper use of materials. Italian Education Scholarships sponsored by the Italian American Cultural Society offer a wonderful opportunity to high school students (9th through 12th grade) to obtain two semesters of Italian language at the Italian American Cultural Center in Clinton Township. Five IACS scholarships consisting of two semesters of Italian education are awarded (September – April). The winners of scholarships receive a certificate towards continuing the Italian education classes at the Italian American Cultural Center and a letter of recommendation for college. MARCH 2015 Italian American Cultural Society My, My, My! Captain Jack’s Seafood Table Makes A Big Splash! The 4th annual Captain Jack’s Seafood Table was created as a fundraiser benefiting the IACS Italian Education scholarship program. The response from attendees of the event over the years has grown considerably – attracting passionate lobster and other seafood lovers. On Friday, February 6, the seafood gala featured a menu put together by executive chef and banquet general manager Alex Lozovoj. Highlights included a choice of seafood appetizers, chilled peel-and-eat gulf shrimp; fresh shucked oysters and claims, crab legs; steamed one pound whole Maine lobster; smoked salmon; seafood salad, and so much more…Followed by a variety of desserts, decadent chocolate fountain; espresso and cappuccino. In addition to enjoying delicious seafood, there was dancing to the live music performed by the very popular One Man Band. The seafood gala is just the beginning of the many exclusive events scheduled in 2015 that the IACS will host at the Italian American Cultural Society Banquet & Conference Center. At this year’s Dinner Dance, San Francesco Church will be honoring Richard Burrell and Ann Scianna-Burrell, Gordon McCarty, and Stanley Santilla. Richard (Rick) Burrell and Ann Scianna-Burrell have been friends to San Francesco Parish for many years. Rick has a strong commitment to family, faith and respect. He is hard working, faithful, respectful, generous, and honest. You can always find him at church when there is a plumbing problem that needs to be repaired, or to simply help out in whatever way he can. He is also very active in the San Francesco Food Drive. Richard and Ann have been married 34 years and have one daughter Maria Alexandra age 19, who is currently attending College. Ann helps in many areas at San Francesco Church. You can find her on Tuesday evenings at church in the position of CCD Coordinator handling all aspects of the CCD Program. This involves making sure the children/adults in the program are instructed traditional doctrine according to the teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. She also heads the Food for the Poor Project, Giving Tree Project, is a member of the Parish Council, Dinner Dance Committee, Feast of San Francesco Committee, assists with First Communions, Confirmations and Marriages within the Parish, and handles directives consistent with the Archdiocese of Detroit. Richard and Ann have a strong devotion to the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity and enjoy giving back to others who are less fortunate in the community and work diligently in this area. They are supporters of San Francesco Parish and are always willing to assist in any way they can. San Francesco Church honors and thanks them for their commitment to their faith and to San Francesco Parish. Gordon McCarty has been a member of San Francesco Parish since 1999. He has been active in the church for many years, helping in any way he can. He guides and supports the direction of Alter Servers, and proudly serves mass alongside his two sons. Gordon is a true example of a family man who leads by his faith. He is married to his wife Jamie McCarty and together they have five beau- tiful children. Alyssa age 20 attends Macomb College, Brenden age 14 attends Austin Catholic Academy, Haley age 11, Matthew age 9, and Savanna age 8, are all homeschooled. Robert Belarmine Catholic School through grade 4, and the remainder of his education through the Redford Public School System. He spent his teen years away from the church teachings trying to find himself. Gordon works full time as a Director of Logistics at Garden Fresh Salsa and occasionally as a Police Reserve for the City of Hamtramck. In his spare time, he is a committed family man, very active in his sons’ sports and enjoys coaching baseball and basketball games. Gordon has been active at San Francesco Church for many years and is an excellent example of a person’s personal commitment to faith and family, and for that reason San Francesco Parish honors him. Stanley worked for L’Anse Creuse Public School System as a Bus Driver “for 22 wonderful years.” He lived near St. Jude Catholic Church and realized he never forgot his catholic upbringing and he needed to be closer to God, and the way to do it was to become a member of St. Jude Parish. With some training and help from Father Colum Morgan he became a Eucharistic Minister and a Lector - Reader, which he truly enjoyed. Stanley Ronald Santilla was baptized August 3, 1941 at San Francesco Church in Detroit by Reverend Livius Paoli. Stanley went to St. After some time passed Stanley and his mother moved to Clinton Township, his life came full circle and he was back at San Francesco Church as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. He now has a permanent job dedicated to San Francesco Church where he truly enjoys the remnants of the original church which was on the corner of Brewster and Rivard in Detroit. San Francesco Parish honors Stanley Santilla and would like to sincerely thank him for his commitment to his faith, hard work, and general commitment to San Francesco Church. The number of hours volunteered by this group of people is immeasurable and we are blessed as a parish to have their leadership and support. Please help us celebrate this special event honoring these upstanding citizens of our community, and to support San Francesco Church as all proceeds go directly to the maintenance and preservation of the church. È diviso in quattro province: L’Aquila, Chieti, Pescara e Teramo, e in 305 comuni. «Continueremo a suonare in tutto il mondo, ma speriamo che l’Italia diventi sempre più importante nel nostro lavoro». http://spettacoliecultura. ilmessaggero.it/musica/ il-volo-felici-manon-chiamateci-ampldquo-tenorini-amprdquo/1195011.shtml Comfortable, spacious visitation rooms with private lounges Private hospitality suites for dinners & funeral lunches Outdoor seating on porches overlooking natural wetlands Dedicated children’s room • Ample parking Competitive pricing • Natural light throughout funeral home 0II)PPIRE*YRIVEP,SQI 6SQIS4PERO6H 7SYXLSJ1MPI6H 1EGSQF8S[RWLMT1- 7EVEL0II)PPIRE1EREKIV 0II)PPIRE*YRIVEP,SQIGSQ GIORGIO MARCHESE ATTORNEY/AVVOCATO Fluent in Italian 586-323-2300 • • • • Initial Consultation at no charge Divorce Real Estate Wills/Estates Corporations • • • • Civil Litigation Personal Injury OUIL/Traffic Offenses Business Transactions Silver Pine Complex 43455 Schoenherr, Suite 7 Sterling Heights, Michigan 48313
