December 2013 NUMBER 11 YEAR 6 Da crisi economica a crisi sociale… o viceversa? From an economic crisis to a social crisis… or vice versa? A t the end of the First World War, Italy, although among the winners of a conflict that had never experienced so much pain and counted so many casualties before, could not reap the benefits of its advantageous position over the other neighboring countries. The Bel Paese (Beautiful Country) wasted too much time worrying about its war wounds, thus entering into a deep economic and social crisis which saw thousands of people take to the streets because they were exacerbated by poverty and unemployment, but also by the uncertainty of a future that nobody could see ahead; a distressing feeling of instability was sensed everywhere, no one could make plans, no one knew where to turn to, but everyone agreed that there was no leadership that might have got rid of fears and concerns, a leader to whom it was possible to entrust the people’s future. segue a pag. Gianluigi Trevisani A group of Citizens was more cunning than others and took power with an almost unanimous consent, and so “the Italy’s fascist era” was born, a period that marked our history. The comparison between what happened in the past with what might happen today is almost spontaneous, due to the basic affinity with the fil-rouge of the current political and social uncertainties; we see people protesting in the streets, people who have lost hope for a better future because of the immobility and our political excesses, the advancement of contradictory characters on the political scene, such as semi-serious politicians, comedians and jugglers who discard - with vague and empty promises and imaginative solutions - each concrete proposal that is submitted for acceptance; characters who might suggest to the many exasperated people an insane hope to have a new “Leader”, like the one who used to say: I’ll sort it out myself! That’s not how the needs of citizens can be solved; consensus, pragmatism, respect for the views and roles, commitment to research the common good as well as the jobs that produce prosperity for all, the attention to avoid waste and useless things, are all positive elements which, if properly applied, may change the recession more rapidly. We are certain that the foundation of any serious change must be our will of “doing”, and more precisely, not only that, but “doing it in the best possible way”. A will that all should adopt: in politics, in schools, at work, in families and even in the spare time! Each of us must aim at optimizing one’s own work, with less waste and perhaps involving some sacrifice, but with an eye to the achievement of objectives and the enhancement of returns. Ultimately, we return to the British concept of ““accountability”, i.e. the individual responsibility of “doing well”, first of all by acting on ourselves and on what we do, and then on our neighbors, the society around us. In the business world, in factories, at home, there are plenty of opportunities to know, to learn and to study; we spend time in front of the computer and we seem to have the world in our hands, but it feels like we just lack one thing: time! Today, everything runs at the speed of light, everything must be done “right now”! It feels like we have no more time to reflect, to better understand our neighbors, our very work and family needs. We have to find this time, along with the ability to improve ourselves at personal level with regard to the values that we care the most, such as family, work, friendship, professionalism and respect, all things that only after we practice them, we could, and we should demand even from others. Best wishes for a more peaceful New Year! Watson is a success story that dates back 90 years, starting from its foundation to its integration in the Trevi Group. Mr. Verne Watson, founder of Watson. Doug Watson 6 December 2013 THE TREVIGROUP JOURNAL News dal nostro mondo Our News The history The history of Watson Incorporated goes back to 1923 when Verne Watson rigged up a single wood-rimmed flatbed truck and started Fort Worth House Moving Company in his home town of Fort Worth, Texas. From these humble beginnings, his business quickly grew to include larger structures and industrial machinery. In the mid 40’s, Verne adapted some of the lift cranes to the purpose of drilling shafts and expanded the company’s drilled shaft operations. By the mid 1950’s the company was known as Watson Foundation Company and had operations in Denver and Atlanta as well as Fort Worth. By the early 1960’s, Verne and his son Jack began to see increasing demand by other drilling contractors for the drill rigs Watson was designing and building for themselves. Watson Manufacturing Company was established to meet this demand and made its first sale of a 5,000 crane attachment in 1965 to Peter Lind Ltd., located in the UK. Between 1965 and 1973, the Watson’s migrated out of drilled shaft contracting and devoted all resources to Watson Incorporated, a company solely focused on the design, manufacture, and sale of foundation drilling equipment for the up and coming drilled shaft industry. Verne and Jack Watson continued to be instrumental in pioneering and gaining acceptance of the use of drilled shaft foundations for many years to come, including Jack’s service as a founding member and the first President of the Association of Drilled Shaft Contractors (ADSC). Since the 1970’s, the Company has emerged as an industry leader in foundation drilling rigs. During that time, the 3rd and 4th generation of Watson’s joined the company fostering the evolution of the company into the modern era of business, manufacturing and technology. Bringing with them their business and mechanical engineering backgrounds, David Watson and his son Doug are driving the company to deliver a wide range of increasingly dependable and productive drill rigs, while maintaining the critical focus on strong customer relationships and exceptional customer support that have helped to define the company. Recent years and Trevi Group Foundation contracting is a challenging business no matter where you are in the world, but finding prosperity in the shallow rock of North America has always required the toughest rigs and resourceful people. The lessons learned from Watson’s 90 years in this market have shaped the two key success factors of our company today: A genuine dedication to the success of our customers and a time tested line of reliable and productive drill rigs. Watson’s business model of manufacturing simple, tough machines that are built-to-order and supported directly from the factory has given Watson its competitive advantage and forged strong loyalty in our customers. Ironically, the same advantages that have built the company are now proving to be an obstacle to growth. Globalization over the last 20 years has brought a new set of challenges that demand businesses to evolve or step aside. In 2009, Watson joined the Group having just achieved the highest turnover to date of 62 rigs. Unfortunately, we did not have a chance to top it in 2009 as the “Great Recession” quickly changed our focus from achieving sustainable growth to sustaining our existence. However, this adversity became an opportunity as the slow down gave us time to refine our business model and build the teams needed to surpass our record of 62 but with better quality and lower costs. Thirty years ago, Watson and Soilmec were surprisingly similar companies, but the aligned efforts of the people behind Trevi have propelled the family owned business to the diverse group of global companies it is today. The lessons learned from Trevi’s remarkable growth, the technological development and process refinement over the last two decades are now a valuable asset to Watson. Watson’s growth strategy balances elements from both Soilmec and Watson: Build-to-Stock and assemble-to-order while retaining the right amount of in-house manufacturing to allow for customization of our rigs. The critical goal of reducing leadtimes has led to increasingly modular designs, sub-contracting where beneficial, better forecasting, and new supply chain systems geared towards a pull system. This will provide Watson the right combination of flexibility and availability that is still crucial in today’s equipment market. The addition of Watson to the Trevi Group is a great example of the types of opportunities created when diverse collections of companies and cultures work together to help each other. Maintaining the distinction of the Watson brand, the culture and market strategies while simultaneously leveraging cost and process improvements allows the Group to appeal to a broader customer base and ultimately gain more market share. B ehind the Watson building there is a big field, which employees friendly call “the hill”. This area is used to test all of the rigs before final delivery. Johnny Richmond, Quality Inspector, has been with Watson for 20 years. He performs the rig tests in order to ensure the delivery of a quality rig. “At Watson, we believe that the quality of our rigs is guaranteed by an accurate assembling and thorough test. When I test, I am not afraid to be rough when operating the rigs because that’s how they are used out on the jobsite. If the machine passes my test, I’m confident that it isn’t going to have any problem out in the field!” explains Johnny. May Lan Pope, Quality Assurance, came up with the idea and organized this rare opportunity for employees operate a Watson rig. The Quality Team understood the importance for employees to learn more about how the rigs actually work. Several women from various departments took advantage of this opportunity. Watson employee Pam Luke, Inside Sales, operated Watson 1100 truck model. “This great opportunity closed the circle from watching the day to day operations and manufacturing of the rig to actually sitting in the seat and drilling a hole. It gave me more insight on how powerful these rigs really are. It makes me proud to work for Watson.” “Watson and Soilmec North America recently had their first opportunity to work together to deliver a joint solution to the market, a short-mast SR30. The Watson ‘Excadrill’ excavator attachment was selected to be integrated onto the SR-30 base using the existing SR30 kinematics and controls. Very few changes were required to accommodate the Excadrill. Upon completion of the attachment in 2012, a longmast SR-30 was ‘borrowed’ to complete the prototype assembly and commence testing at Watson’s facility in Texas. The installation proved to be quite simple, the issues were quickly resolved and the rig performed as designed. After testing, the SR30 was reassembled and shipped to a customer. This fast paced testing process was completed in two weeks with the combined efforts of American Equipment technicians, Watson engineering and assembly personnel and the Soilmec Technical department. The dedicated SR30 base arrived in the spring of 2013 and the Excadrill was installed, tested and prepared for touch-up and shipment. This collaborative effort offered several lessons on how to best leverage the strengths of our product lines in the future. Like any project, communication throughout the process, a clear understanding of the customer requirements and design tradeoffs involved and the teamwork and resourcefulness of the people are the crucial elements to achieving success.” SR-30 con antenna corta Watson./SR-30 with Watson short mast. “I have been working for a long time with the management of Watson, and we share together projects and strategies for the future. I’ve met people fond of the brand and their products, but at the same time ready to discuss with me how to solve their problems. I am grateful and honored to be able to help solve some of the challenges Watson faces and to use all the Soilmec experience to help them in this. I see this as the key to increase the Watson market in the actual U.S. and, I hope, all over the world in the future.” “My function in Watson is to coordinate and develop joint projects with Soilmec, identifying strategic areas for the Group. The assembly of Soilmec machines in Watson is perhaps the most ambitious project because to be successful it’s necessary to reorganize production and supply. After a long period of study we see the first results precisely in supply area, thanks to the introduction of global suppliers. Thanks to the increasing mutual trust and cooperation, the involvement of the headquarters and the support from Mauro Palumbo, now we can work towards a common goal, exploiting the synergy of the Group companies.” 8 December 2013 THE TREVIGROUP JOURNAL News dal nostro mondo Our News Settore Drilling/Il Gruppo Trevi avvierà la produzione di impianti HH ad alta tecnologia in Argentina Drilling Sector/Trevi Group will manufacture high-tech HH rigs in Argentina D rillmec, società del Gruppo Trevi specializzata nella realizzazione di impianti per la perforazione petrolifera e pozzi d’acqua, avvierà la produzione di alcuni impianti ad alta tecnologia serie HH in Argentina. Trevi Group will start production in Argentina of its highly technological drilling rigs for the Oil&Gas sector in 2014 and will provide for the integration of locally produced components of approximately 40%. It is estimated that the local component will rise to at least 60% in the next four years until 2018. The event, heldattheMinistry of Economy, was attended by representatives of more than 15 operating companies and entrepreneurs in the field of hydrocarbons including, YPF, Petrobras, Pan American Energy (PAE) Total, San Antonio Estrella, Pluspetrol Emepa and Nabors, former users of such rigs. The oil drilling rigs that will be produced in Argentina are HH220 Drillmec series widely used and tested in the South American regions. Due to the length of the line and the rather varied and tortuous orography, the work involves building 56 bridges and/or viaducts, 1 tunnel and 3 stations. The most representative part of the project which deserves special men- tion is the “Exceptional” viaduct with pile shaft foundations; another feat of engineering is the “Special” viaduct with shaft foundations and, in this case, micropiles. The “Exceptional” viaduct, located about 35 km from the city of Tlemcen, will be almost 1,800 m long and will have 16 spans with breadths varying from 85 to 114 metres. The height of the piles will also vary considerably, ranging from 16 to 134 metres. To be precise, Trevi is responsible for building foundation piles with 1,200 mm diameter (with shafts between 15 and 38 metres long), micropiles with 240 mm diameter (with shafts 25 m long) and jet grouting. The shaft foundations have shafts with an average diameter of 30 m, constructed with 1,200 mm tangent piles at a maximum depth of 40 m. In areas where there may be a significant water table, impermeabilisation of the shaft excavation site will be guaranteed by a screen of jet grouted columns positioned behind the piles. Trevi S.p.A. was involved in the project for the new metro line of the Turin metropolitan area. The section Lingotto-Bengasi will be very relevant as it will significantly increase the quality of the service, with a greater train frequency and passenger numbers (estimated in about 40 million users per year). The chosen Soilmec Hydromill was an SC90 in Tiger configuration with hydraulic and mud winders positioned on the base carrier that gives a compact unit wh i le m a i n ta i n i n g the high depth drilling performance. The rig is equipped with the Soilmec rotating module system which allows the module itself to rotate for T panel execution. This is really useful especially in small job sites where the change of rig orientation is a very difficult operation which increases time loses and costs. The new Bengasi station fo u n d a t i o n wo rk s , awarded to Trevi Spa, consist of a continuous diaphragm wall with 64 panels measuring 1,200x2,800 mm excavation dimension up to a depth of 31 m. The morphology of the soil consists of a compacted fill material on the top, followed by alluvial soil mainly composed by gravel from 3 to 28 m deep crossed by a concrete conglomerate layer (3/ 5 m thickness), between a depth of 1116 m, and a layer of clay for the last 2/3 meters. Due to the soil ch a ra c te r i s t i c s , i n particular the concrete layer, together with the depth to be reached and the high vertical value requested by the project (panel deviation ≤ 0, 2%) the equipment to use was the Soilmec Hydromill, as it is more effective than grabs both in hard soil overcome and because it is able to ensure the verticality, thanks to the DMS Soilmec monitoring and control system. In addition the work is in a narrow job site, located on a square in a very busy area of Turin. Hydromill positioning into the trench. The panel execution phases started with the construction of a shallow pre-trench, for the suction pump start-up and then proceed to excavate the panel with the Hydromill module that is lowered progressively into the trench. The powerful submerged mud pump located immediately above the cutter drums delivers the cuttingsladen mud to a mud treatment plant. During the excavation phase Trevi experienced the biggest challenges of this project for a hydromill rig, in fact the stratigraphy T he project consists of the execution of 1,9 km tunnel, 2 new stations (Italia ’61 and Bengasi square), two ventilation shafts and a terminal tunnel that extends for about 200 m from Bengasi square. The tunnel will be done by a Tunnel Boring Machine starting from the Bengasi station, that will be used as the headquarter for storage of the ashlars and the extraction of the excavated material in order to minimize the job sites impact on the urban area. Nelle foto, l’idrofresa Soilmec “Tiger” al lavoro a Torino./In the pictures, the Soilmec “Tiger” hydromill at work in Turin. revealed three different types of soil that required three different working approaches. The gravel part is quite easy to excavate and the debris treatment process is fast ensuring productivity and profitability. To overpass the concrete conglomerate layer was difficult due to the hardness, Jordan bits were welded on the tooth bodies which simultaneously reduced the wear and aided the conglomerate fracture. The clay major difficulty was the cohesive material, peculiarity easy to excavate but hard to discharge, in fact the clay tended to create a sort of dough around the milling unit. The solution adopted was to anticipate the teeth replacement by checking the milling unit condition regularly in order to excavate this part in the best possible condition. The Bengasi metro station project was a really hard job site: narrow space, hard and various soil conditions, high verticality value required and considerable panel size. The Trevi choice to complete this work with a Soilmec Tiger Hydromill, hose drum design, has revealed a proper and successful conclusion. 18 December 2013 THE TREVIGROUP JOURNAL Trevi USA/Diga di Wolf Creek, progetto nazionale di recupero dell’anno USA/Wolf Creek Dam, National Rehabilitation Project of the Year La diga Wolf Creek Dam è stata progettata, ed è attualmente gestita, dall’ USACE-Nashville District. US Army Corps of Engineers ). T he combination earthfill embankment and concrete gravity dam was built on alluvial soils overlying a karst limestone foundation in the 1940s, prior to modern design and construction methods. Significant piping became evident during the 1960s, prompting an emergency grouting program, followed in the 1970s by installation of the first cutoff wall ever installed by USACE (US Army Corps of Engineers). This wall worked well for the features it intercepted, but was not sufficiently deep or wide; subsequently, it became apparent that a new cutoff wall was needed. In 2007 the dam was given a Dam Safety Action Classification “I” – Urgent and Compelling (DSAC I) rating which is the highest category of risk. In 2008, construction of a state-of-the-art barrier wall began. The project involved development of ground-breaking methods for construction and qual- ity control verification of seepage barrier walls deep beneath active high head dams. The combination of total depth (up to 275 ft), depth into limestone (up to 100 ft), and hardness of the limestone (average strength around 14,000 psi with a maximum of 35,700 psi) was unprecedented for barrier walls of this type. Concerns for dam safety and risks associated with such work inside an active high head dam put safety at the forefront of all decisionmaking. The Corps and its contractor teams constantly monitored and reacted to the dam’s response to construction activities; this required a robust QA/QC program and substantial upgrades to the existing instrumentation on the project. In March 2013, nine months ahead of schedule, the wall was successfully completed as part of rehabilitation project. Integral to the success of the project was an aggressive public outreach program that utilized news articles, websites, and public meetings to keep the public informed of the dam’s condition and of progress of the foundation repairs throughout construction. Visitors to the stand were particularly interested to hear about the record-breaking 250 m deep excavation for diaphragm walls at the test site in Gualdo, the part played by Trevi in the rescue effort on Giglio Island to salvage the Costa Concordia, and the company’s experimental work involving the recovery/treatment/ consolidation of marine sediment. Once again Remtech Expo 2013 provided an excellent opportunity to showcase activities in the sector, with the specialised public in attendance including technicians and designers from the leading consultancy groups, major clients in the environmental sector (for example Gruppo Eni and several port authorities), public administrators and representatives from a number of ministries and research institutes. Il sistema “TREVICALATORE” presen- THE TREVIGROUP JOURNAL 21 December 2013 Technology corner / L’angolo della tecnologia Gruppo Trevi “TREVI-CALATORE” An innovative system for the installation of plunge columns aimed to excavate underground structures through the “top-down” method. T he installation of foundation elements (large-diameter bored piles or diaphragm walls) for the carrying out of underground works to be performed through the “top down” technique (stations, car parks, subways, artificial tunnels) often implies the need to insert within said foundation elements, with pinpoint accuracy, some steel or prefab structures serving as provisional/ definitive columns of the whole work structure. The future high-speed railway station of Florence Belfiore is a gorgeous example; the new station will be built in the northwest area of Florence, located about two kilometers away from the existing station of Santa Maria Novella. The architectural design of the new Belfiore station is by Norman Foster, while the engineering design is by Arup (picture 1). The project involves the construction of a facility that will occupy about 45,000 square meters with a vertical distribution, going down to 25 meters below the street level. The supporting roof structure will be made entirely of glass, which lets the light in at the trains level. The construction procedure envisages employment of the topdown system, with realization of the external supporting structure by means of 41,000 square meters of reinforced concrete diaphragm walls, thickness 1.6 m, depth 40 meters. Loads due to internal structures and roof will be taken by n° 500 bored piles, installed in the station footprint, with a diameter of 1,2001,500-2,100 mm and a depth ranging from 50 to 70 m. In the upper blind part of 250 piles, a heavy steel column (weight 15- 20 t, length 22-25 m) has to be inserted with pinpoint accuracy, acting as a pillar to support the temporary struts during stage excavation. About 2.5 million kilograms of steel will be employed to produce the plunge columns (picture 2). In that phase, a special device called “TREVIC A L AT O R E ” w a s specially desig ned, developed and employed to adjust the proper plano- altimetric installation of the plunge columns and their verticality. The “TREVI- CALATORE” consists of two lightweight frames (base frame and leveling frame), not bulky, that can be quickly Figura 2. Posizionamento delle colonne pilastro./Picture 2. Steel column pillar positioning. Figura 3. Posizionamento del “TREVI-CALATORE”. (Brevetto in corso di registrazione) Picutre 3. Positioning of “TREVI-CALATORE”. (Patent pending) installed just by means of a small service crane (picture 3). The main feature of the system is that the planimetric adjustment is initially performed by moving the upper leveling frame, with the base frame previously positioned and fixed to the drilling casing; only when the leveling frame is in perfect position, the steel heavy column is lowered and suspended in the proper position, by adjusting the tilting. In this way there is no need to translate the heavy column (max weight 20 ton), so the base and leveling frames can be considerably lighter. The “TREVICALATORE” has the following advantages and innovation features: • All the supporting and adjusting devices of the system are located out of the excavation, hence it is easy to access and control; • The system consists of lightweight and flexible steel frames, easy to handle; • The system allows to install and adjust the pillar column’s position regardless of the pile steel cage previously laid; in that way, the system allows to separate the verticality tolerances of the pillar elements (<0.4%), from those of the bored pile (generally < 1.5%); • The system allows to lay pillar columns or elements with different shape or dimensions. Toniolo – Trevi S.p.A. 22 December 2013 Soilmec THE TREVIGROUP JOURNAL DIRECTORS Francia/Una presenza storica e forte France/An historical and strong branch S oilmec è presente in Francia dall’inizio degli anni Sessanta. To date, it is said that a machine developed for the French market after five to ten years will be successful in other parts of the world. Later, in the 70’s a territorial agency was created, first called LSM then LBSM, led by M. René Ledez, who sold Link Belt cranes on which our famous RT3 units were mounted. The agency agreement LBSM-Soilmec lasted successfully for 40 years. Then in early 2006 it naturally led to the creation of Soilmec France, a company headed by Mr. Francesco Bassi, who still avails himself of the advice of Mr. Ledez, and later in 2010 to the creation of Soilmec Algeria, a subsidiary of Soilmec France. Soilmec, as I said, has always believed in the market beyond the Alps, mainly because there is no foundation equipment manufacturer in France, although in France there is the largest Group in the world for foundation works, that is Soletanche, today renamed SoletancheFressynet and part of the Vinci Group, as well as other companies like Spie Fondations, Fayat, Botte or like many other medium small entrepreneurs, who have always tried alternative technical solutions to break into the market. A s a co n s e q u e n ce , Soilmec has always received from France many quite complicated and challenging technical requests. Let us just consider how many studies on feasibility our Italian technicians carry out for our cousins beyond the Alps, which are always very attractive since they allow the Italian creativity to implement its “savoir faire” at best. This is how new machines were born, like for example the equipment for CFA deeper and deeper, like the CM-1200, the CM700, the SR-30 (long m a s t ve rs io n ) a n d the brand-new SF-65 latest addition to the range. In parallel with the technical development of the machines, there has been a remarkable development of Soilmec France: it has grown from six employees to the current sixteen in France and five in Algeria. Soon M. Philippe Barbier joined Soilmec France and he contributed to the development of the micropile field, where Soilmec had decided to invest by creating a complete range of machines. Therefore, like it happened for the pile machines, several micropile machines, Officina di Soilmec France./Soilmec France workshop. Subsequently, Soilmec France realized that it was no longer enough to develop and sell new products, but it had also become essential to try to better serve our customers in terms of assistance. It was then decided to take o n E n g. S e b a s t i e n Canac to improve our customer service: from two technicians at the beginning, today we have ten people in France and two in Algeria, more than five workshops spread over France in order to better serve our customers. In addition, in early 2012 we inaugurated the new headquarters of Soilmec Fra nce g oin g from 3,000 square meters, of which 700 covered, to 10,000 square meters, of which 1,800 are covered with a new building equipped with an overhead travelling crane to facilitate all maintenance operations in compliance with the most modern technical requirements and safety standards. The strengthening of the company, from the structural and above all from the human resources point of view, with a working group of 21 skilled and motivated people, enabled Soilmec France to better serve i ts C u s tomers a nd represent the brands Soilmec, Drillmec and Trevi worldwide. However, what are the real qualities which make the MR-4000 so unique? First of all its main feature is given by the Carrier Truck 12x8, which is tailor-made by Tatra for this particular project and that can be certified in order to be driven on the public roads. This goal has been reached thanks Il nuovo impianto MR-400 su telaio Tata registrato presso la motorizzazione slovacca. In questo contesto andrà dunque a lavorare la ultima nata Drillmec: entro i confini di una nazione (la Slovacchia appunto) che produce T he increasing demand for workover rigs in the Oil&Gas market, pushes manufactures to develop new technologies and solution in order t o o f fe r a q u a l i t y product that complies with inter national standards. Drillmec has been able to satisfy market’s need manufacturing the new MR-4000 DB workover rig. This new series of rig with 90 mton hook load capacity, perfectly fits in Drillmec’s production range together with MR- 3500 (75 mton hook load capacity) and MR-5000 (113 mton). to strong cooperation between Drillmec and Tatra, a Czech company who produces heavy vehicles born on 1850s in Kopřivnice and nowadays famous for being the first Central Europe engine car (the Präsident) manufacturer on 1897. Moreover Tatra is the third world’s antique vehicles manufacturer company. Secondly, such new rig has to be strictly tested and inspected in order to comply with the European Regulations. Fo r t h e s e re a s o n s the Tatra MR-4000‘s carrier is equipped with a powerful 280 kW, 8 cylinders diesel engine, which is the only Euro 5 air-cooled automotive engine, joined to CAT C11 which drives rotary table and auxiliaries. Drawwork is equipped with disc brake according to Atex regulations and it could be controlled from a remote location for increase the operator’s safety. All of this is possible forasmuch the vehicle’s minimum amount of space: 19 m total length considering the mast projection from the front, 2.5 m width, and 4.1 m high from the ground. The rig position while running occurs through lateral outriggers, hydraulically controlled and placed on the rear vehicle. The mast’s guylines are linked with them and this solution permits to achieve 2 goals: the reducing of occupied ground area and the feasibility to perform a stable anchoring on various soil types. This new concept of vehicle has got the green light by the Slovakian Department of Motor Vehicle which has the most strict homologation rules in Europe. In this country (Slovakia) the Drillmec’s new born will run its very first steps: in a land which produces an average of 3.500 barrels of oil per day (BP Statistical Energy Survey, 2008) therefore supporting NAFTA, the main drilling company in Slovakia. NAFTA can count on 125 oil wells with a depth range between 4,000 and 5,000 meters. T urkana is one of the most interesting area of Kenya Republic. It is located by the namesake lake, about 550 km from Nairobi and 200 km from Kericho district which is famous for its own tea exported all over the world. MDAL (Marriott Drilling Africa Ltd.) the subsidiary of The British Company PR-Marriott is the drilling contractor who has signed a threeyear exploration contract in the Lokichar basin and which has bought a 1,000 HP rig from Drillmec. Drillmec has supplied a MR-8000 rig which is one of the most popular model of Drillmec’s range, it has been engineered according to API and EU regulations and can work in ambient temperature up to 50°C. Its maximum hook load capacity is 200 mton and it can work with DP range II in double configuration; moreover this project has also included a complete package with two 9T1000 mud pumps and a 1330 bbl mud system suitable for Europe application as well. The main feature of this rig, according to The AngloIrish oil company Tullow Oil requirements, consists of its capability to have an iron roughneck installed instead of the usual power tong. Drillmec has been able to meet all the customers and the Oil Company needs, working full time and together with all the holders of the project. Furthermore, some major components, such as the Hydraulic HTD-250C Top Drive has been tested in detail in accordance to the Drop Object regulations (i.e. the prevention of falling object from high position). The Top Drive assembly has been made by Nord-Lock washers, fully used in on-shore and offshore drilling field. This MR-8000 rig has been engineered 100% in conformity to customer needs showing that a standard rig could be customized and tailored for any kind of application. Tullow Oil has recently announced that the first exploration well (Etuko-1) has reported a significant productivity evaluation, quantified as approximately 231 million barrels of oil. At the moment two out of three exploration wells have been successfully tested. The Marriot Drilling Company has positively commented the first results by saying the exploratory studies of the Etuko-1 well have been higher than the expectation. The presence of British companies together with current results allow Kenya to increase the production and the exportation of crude oil soon. THE TREVIGROUP JOURNAL 33 December 2013 Drillmec RIG 5970 Arabia Saudita/Via alle perforazioni dell’impianto Saipem Saudi Arabia/Saipem rig started drilling O Impianto fanghi e di alimentazione. Mud system and Power System. This rig is part of the three package supply done by Drillmec S.p.A for the Saipem new contract with Aramco. “The state-owned company, known as Saudi Aramco, will use a record 170 rigs by the end of 2013, according to estimates from Schlumberger Ltd. (SLB) and Halliburton Co. (HAL) That exceeds the total number forecast by the oil-service companies earlier this year” says Wael Mahdi, Bloomberg. Currently, the Italian drilling contractor Saipem, the leading drilling contractor in the country, have always brought considerable technologies and modern solution to enhance safety, increase efficiency and reduce costs which emphasized the Italian presence in the Kingdom. Saipem’s plans are evolving to continue the contribution to realize Aramco’s plans by increasing its fleet in Saudi. As a matter of fact, Saipem has just spud three 2,000 HP land rigs designed, manufactured and fully delivered by Drillmec S.p.A as a major Saipem’s rig supplier and partner in R&D. Drillmec has already built several rigs for Saudi that sum-up now to six packages. In addition to the design, procurement and manufacturing, Drillmec has also managed the project’s Expediting making the supply tailor-made according to the Aramco’s requirement for the entire project’s aspects. The main challenge is this project was the lead time that was set to four months a milestone for the project’s success. Thanks to its experience in the field and close market follow-up, Drillmec was able to setup an established strategy that optimized its human and material resources to meet the project’s time and budget. The event conceded with the Africa Oil&Gas Awards Ceremony, during which Drillmec’s received the “Innovation of the year” award for his hydraulic rigs of the HH series. In the picture, from above: the team of Drillmec India and some areas of the new facility. lo di produrre un modello di impianto di perforazione meccanico parzialmente montato e di procedere con il “rig up” finale a Kakinada. G iven a total rig “population” of about 100 working drilling rigs for oil and gas, Drillmec considered strategic to locate a new office and facilities in Indian country. Discussion started last year while heavy land rigs 2000 Hp where offered to national oil company “Oil India”. However the company structure was finalized in early 2013. Drillmec India is a partner company between Drillmec Italy and KMOC which is local manufacturer of tanks, mud system and steel structure. The main commercial office is located in Mumbai where main drilling contractors and oil companies are located. On the other hand we can rely on a production facilities in Kakinada (in joint venture with KMOC). Here drilling rigs can be assembled as well as tested and the workshop has easy access to the sea. Kakinada is located in the east coast and faces the bay of Bengal in the Indian ocean. Main global companies involved in oil and gas and offshore business are located here and we can enhance the business relationship through cooperation. Future plan for this country is to manufacture a sample mechanical drilling rig with partial assembly and proceed with the final rig up in Kakinada. In future, rigs manufacture there can be marketed over there and in surrounding countries. Indeed the local workshop is currently applying for API license. With regards to HH rigs we have to say that there is an increasing interest and demand. Hydraulic and automatic rigs are moving to India from Asia, Europe and Australia through foreign contractors. We also forecast the domestic contractors to be ready for new rigs acquisition in the near future. P T Coal Gas Solutions (CGS) was established in Jakarta in 2010 to provide a range of services to the emerging Coal Bed Methane (CBM) industry in Indonesia and since then has become a subsidiary of PT Timas Suplindo, a leading EPCI contractor in Indonesia’s oil & gas sector. CGS specializes in the provision of onshore drilling and construction services and the company is bringing a new approach to land drilling in Indonesia in the form of a highly mobile, modular, automated, hydraulic super single drilling rig as the Drillmec HH-75. This is the first rig of its kind in Indonesia and should pave the way for many more to follow once its benefits have been demonstrated and understood. CGS has selected the HH-75 to enable them to provide clients in Indonesia with improved overall drilling performance including speed, reliability, safety and cost efficiency, particulary in the CBM sector where the drilling of multiple shallow wells quickly and cost efficiently is a key to success. CGS is currently preparing to mobilise the HH-75 for its first project, a one year drilling program for Vico (a BP & ENI partnership) in East Kalimantan. To support CGS during the start-up period Petreven, Drillmec’s sister company of Trevi Group, has entered into an agreement with CGS to provide technical support and rig supervision as required. S ince August 2013 Petreven Argentina is working on the new center of energy development in Argentina, “ Vaca Muerta” . Several international players are looking to partake in the exploration and development of Argentina resources under different forms (association, direct management, etc.) . Among them are companies such as Shell, Chevron, Petrobras, YPF, Apache, Pae, etc. The main investor is YPF, which has dedicated to this purpose 19 drilling rigs and 9 “workover” equipment. YPF, however, claims having to renew the plant fleet (currently 70% of the plants have more than thirty years). To this end, YPF began looking for the acquisition of fast, safe, efficient and up to date equipment. Petreven stands out among last generation plants with its two HH -220, one of which is already active in the area since August while the other one will start to work in January 2014. The first operation results have shown some of the typical Petreven characteristics: since the third well drilled a significant reduction of execution time was evident, and the company stated to be able to get further improvement in the near future. At this time, the works in this field (Loma Campana Vaca Muerta formation) involves two plants in the same location drilling three wells each. I n February 2013 Petreven Argentina formally began operations in the province of Santa Cruz, in the southern area of the country, sending the first automatic equipment H-103, which was followed in June by the H-105 equipment. Both plants are covered by a 5 year contract. This was a major leap for Petreven, due to the 1,500 miles gap between the operation area in the province of Santa Cruz and the Neuqeun area, where the company has worked until now. The operation base is located in an area of Pico Truncado, a town with 23,000 inhabitants. After 8 months from the beginning of the works Petreven completed the operations base, workshop and offices. At this time drilling operations in North Santa Cruz in the Gulf of San Jorge basin (number 4 on the map ) employ 80 people with two rigs and possibly a further equipment from July 2014. Petreven is working in the country with the contractor YPF since 2004. On October 15th, 2013 the installation of the Operating Base was completed with the salute ceremony of Italy and Argentine flags. Auguri Frenque! I n September 2013 we organised our outing to Rocca delle Caminate. Every year without fail, as the outing approaches, we are plagued by bad weather, commitments we can’t get out of, end-of-season tiredness … and so on. This year we did it! You can see from the photos how many people attended … a first! I n July 2013 we enjoyed an unforgettable ride in Carpegna, tackling the steep climb that is affectionately known as the Cippo, or the Carpegna. The almost 5 km-long stretch has a constant gradient of between 15 and 18%. Pantani, who regularly used it for his training sessions, used to say “Carpegna is enough for me”. Now we know why it was… it is more than enough for us! THE TREVIGROUP JOURNAL 43 December 2013 Sport YOUNG TEAM I giovani componenti del gruppo: da sinistra/Young members of the group: from left, Michele e Giovanni. T he date for this year’s meeting was 5 May, different from previous years. But the number of people who took part was exactly the same, or rather… we had three more participants than usual! We always look forward to the Trevi Group meeting and it is always a great success. Last year’s meeting deserves special mention because all the money raised was donated to the people hit by the earthquakes in Emilia. At the final award ceremony on 24 November 2012, UISP presented the Trevi Group Cycling Team with a plaque thanking them, which is currently on display in the canteen. Another piece of news is that this year our new members are really giving it their all. Michele, Giovanni, Ugo: all very strong guys, keen to do their very best. They have brought a breath of fresh air to the Cycling Team, and everyone if feeling the benefit. A suggestion: don’t forget to invite any cycling enthusiasts you have among your work colleagues and family, it’s a good chance to spend time with other people who love cycling and it’s good for team spirit. Last but not least, the Trevi Group Cycling Te- am would like to mention the charity project it is involved in: in conjunction with AVSI of Cesena, we are helping a boy called Frenque in Mozambique to grow and build himself a dignified future, in living conditions we could not even begin to imagine. Every year we send a donation to help with his upkeep and schooling. Frenque sends us letters and drawings and tells us how things are coming on. As well as the practical aid we give, the Group also sends letters and photos. This year we even sent a Group T-shirt as proof of our affection. “Knowing there is someone who loves him and thinks about him” said his tutor “is enormously important!”. We realise that although we are helping one person in this modest way, we can’t help everyone. We are well aware of this limit. In any case… good luck Frenque! In its report, Africa Mission points out how the projects in the NGO’s “water sector ” have increased significantly over the past ten years - from 2003 to 2012 - compared to the previous thirty years, thanks to the collaboration with Trevi Group and Drillmec. For example, of the 951 wells drilled in the 40 years since the NGO from Piacenza was set up, 501 have been produced in the past ten years; out of a total of 1,555 wells restored to working conditions, 855 have been restored in the last decade.
