In 2007 I was approached by Ingrid Edlund-Berry with a request for photos to be used
at an Etruscan conference in Austin, TX. Ingrid and I had been students at the Etruscan
site Poggio Civitate in the late ’60s and she recalled that I just might have something,
which I also had. I was gratified by many flattering and encouraging remarks. At about
the same time Emilia Muzzi, then director of the Murlo Museum, raised the idea of
making a modest exhibition of my photoes, most of them taken at the late sixties and
early seventies. And there we were!

Creating the mostra Gente di Murlo was a far larger project that I could ever have
imagined. Ingrid, Emilia and I made a selection of pictures from my archive, and we
soon realized that beautiful landscapes came by the dozen, but Murlo the way it looked
forty years ago, and especially the people were particularly interesting. Everyone in the
pictures had to be identified, a task that was partly carried out locally but also by Emilia
interviewing her parents at the Tabacchi and others that were present at the time.

Finally, in May 10 2009, the mostra was inaugurated at il Circolo in Vescovado and the
some sixty photos were on display.
My sincere thanks to ”the team”, Ingrid and Emilia, without whose constant help and
support I would never had been able to carry out this project.

Gabriella Hansen, architect colleague and designer in Simrishamn/Malmö, let me use
her showroom for two weeks to try the pictures ”in real life”. For her experienced advise
and also for creating the beautiful poster, and the graphic profile of the mostra I am most
grateful.
We decided Il Circolo to be a most appropriate venue, and Giotto Boscagli, President of
the Circolo, and his family agreed to let us use that location. Thank you!
For PR and for translation of all documents into impeccable Italian I thank Annalisa
Coppolaro-Nowell, journalist and author living in Lupompesi, near Vescovado. My
sister-in-law, Catharina Soulaine, provided excellent assistance with the translations

and his lovely daughter Valentina, for letting us use their house.
When the day of opening the exhibition came very close a charming group of extremely
competent friends gathered to give a hand with the actual hanging. I had prepared it
back home, I had taken advice from my ninety-year-old uncle, Lennart Roupe, with
sixty years’ experience of hanging paintings on a wall, and also from my daughter Katja
Roupe for invaluable lay-out work.

Lancing, a new friend who at his own expense came with us to make a video of the

My wife Birgitta followed with patience and some amazement the year-long preparation,
my travelling to Vescovado, and endless e-mails and frequent anguish over photos. She
came with me for the inauguration which contributed immensely to my peace of mind.

even to carry a camera.

Ringraziamenti
Nel 2007 mi ha contattato Ingrid Edlund-Berry chiedendomi alcune foto per una conferenza
sugli etruschi ad Austin (Texas). Ingrid ed io eravamo stati studenti insieme presso il
sito etrusco di Poggio Civitate alla fine degli anni ’60, e pensava che io potessi avere
qualcosa, che in effetti avevo. Mi sentii assai gratificato da molti commenti incoraggianti e piacevoli. Più o meno in quel periodo Emilia Muzzi, all’epoca direttore del Museo
Etrusco di Murlo, ebbe l’idea di organizzare una piccola esibizione delle mie foto, gran
parte delle quali scattate a fine anni ’60 ed inizio anni ’70. E allora ecco qua!
Creare la mostra Gente di Murlo si è rivelato un progetto molto più esteso di quanto
avessi mai potuto immaginare. Ingrid, Emilia ed io effettuammo una selezione di foto
del mio archivio, e ci rendemmo presto conto che vi erano decine di bellissimi panorami,
ma era soprattutto interessante vedere Murlo com’era quarant’anni fa, specialmente la
gente. Tutti coloro che erano nelle foto dovevano essere identificati, un compito che
venne fatto in parte localmente, ma anche da Emilia che ha chiesto ai genitori alla tabaccheria,
ed altri che erano in zona all’epoca.
Tantissimi ringraziamenti a Nancy Winter ed Ingrid Rowland che sono venute da Roma,
a Lars Sandström, un vecchio compagno di scuola, che è arrivato da Stoccolma, a Johannes
Lancing, un giovane amico che, a sue spese, è venuto con noi per fare le riprese video

En stor stad en stor skatt …
Traditionerna om Murlo och Vescovado går långt tillbaka i tiden och det kom inte
som en överraskning för den eminente arkeologen Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli att
både landskapet och befolkningen skapade kontinuitet mellan forntid och nutid. När
han vandrade på vägarna i Toskanas kullar på 1920-talet och talade med folket som
bodde och arbetade där, framstod Murlo och dess omnejd som en historiens pärla. Inspirerad av Professor Bianchi-Bandinelli besökte Professor Kyle M. Phillips Jr. från Bryn
Mawr College Murlo och Vescovado och blev omedelbart fascinerad av kullen med det
talande namnet Poggio Civitate som en lovande plats för en utgrävning av en etruskisk
bebyggelse.
Och så hände det att en grupp arkeologer startade utgrävningarna vid den numera världsberömda platsen Poggio Civitate år 1966 och arbetet fortsätter. Varje grävningssäsong
har studenter kommit från Förenta Staterna, Sverige, Danmark, England, Frankrike,
Tyskland och andra länder för att delta i utgrävningarna och för att få kunskap om
historien och betydelsen av etruskiska och senare bebyggelser i trakten kring Siena.

Förutom den givande erfarenheten av själva grävningen har under åren studenter och
andra haft förmånen att lära känna de många personer som på olika sätt infogat dem i
det dagliga livet i Vescovados och Murlos samhällen. Det var borgmästaren, Maurizio
Morviducci, som satte tonen för att välkomna studenter och besökande när de anlände
för första gången till Vescovado, och i Murlo var det Armida Ferri, erkänd kokerska
på grävningen, vars omsorg fick alla att känna sig hemma. Under de första årens grävningar var det många arbetare från Vescovado och kringliggande samhällen som visade
sin förmåga att gräva fram murar och arkitektonisk dekoration och som hade mycket att

Syftet med den här fotoutällningen är att hylla alla våra vänner i Vescovado och
Murlo som på så många vis har varit pionjärer genom att låta studenter och andra få
delta i samhällslivet. Göran “Giorgio” Söderberg kom till Murlo från Sverige som
utgrävningsfotograf 1968 och blev genast fascinerad av landskapet, byggnaderna, och
invånarna som representerade arvet från det förgångna såväl som dagens samhälle.
De fotografier som visas här är ett litet urval av de porträtt och bilder av dem som
han träffat under de år han arbetade på grävningarna vid Poggio Civitate eller i samhället eller under fritiden, sittande utomhus eller på promenad med vänner. Många
av dem som avbildats finns ej mer i livet, och vi hedrar deras minne; andra deltog i
de första årens grävningar och har mycket att berätta för sina barn och barnbarn; åter

The traditions of Murlo and Vescovado go far back in time and it was no surprise to
the great scholar Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli that both the landscape and the people
provided the continuity between past and present. As he walked the paths of the hills of
Tuscany in the 1920s and talked to the people who lived and worked there, the area of
Murlo stood out as a gem of history. Inspired by Professor Bianchi Bandinelli, Professor
Kyle M. Phillips Jr. visited Murlo and Vescovado and was immediately drawn to the
hill of Poggio Civitate as a promising site for an excavation of an Etruscan settlement.
And so it was that a group of archaeologists started excavations at the by now worldknown site of Poggio Civitate in 1966 and the work continues. Every season students
have arrived from the United States, Sweden, France, Germany and other countries
to participate in the excavations and to learn about the history and significance of the
Etruscan and later settlements in the area of Siena.
In addition to the rewarding experience of excavating, through the years students and
others have benefitted from getting to know the many individuals who in different ways
have included them in the daily life of the communities of Vescovado and Murlo. It was
the late mayor, Maurizio Morviducci, who set the tone of welcoming students and visitors as they arrived for the first time at Vescovado, and at Murlo the gentility of Armida
Ferri, the renowned excavation cook, made everyone feel at home. In the early years
of excavating, many workmen from Vescovado and neighboring communities applied
their skills in uncovering remains of walls and of architectural decoration and had much
to teach the students about the hard work of careful excavating. Outside work, students
appreciated the friendliness of all, young and old, with whom they came into contact in
Vescovado and Murlo, be it at the tabacchi, at the butcher’s, at the bars, at the post office
or just walking down the street of Vescovado towards Murlo.

Through this photographic exhibit we wish to honor all our friends at Vescovado and
Murlo who in so many ways have been pioneers in allowing students and others to
become part of the community. Göran “Giorgio” Söderberg came to Murlo from
Sweden as the excavation photographer in 1968 and immediately became fascinated with the landscape, buildings, and people who represented the heritage from the
past as well as the present society. The photographs included here represent a small
selection of portraits and views of those he has encountered through the years at work at
the site of Poggio Civitate or in town or during leisure hours sitting outside or walking
with friends. Many of those shown are no longer living, and we treasure their memory;
others were part of the early years of the excavations and have stories to tell their
children and grandchildren; others again we first met as children and they have grown
up to see a steady stream of new students arrive each season and visitors came in search
of the site and museum.

Murlo e Vescovado hanno radici che affondano nei secoli, e non fu sorpreso il grande
studioso Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli di scoprire come il territorio e la gente di
qui offrissero una continuità tra passato e presente. Mentre passeggiava sui sentieri
collinari della Toscana degli anni ‘20 e parlava con la gente che qui lavorava
e viveva, capì che Murlo rappresentava un grande tesoro nella storia. Ispirato dal Prof.
Bianchi Bandinelli, il Prof. Kyle M. Phillips Jr. visitò Murlo e Vescovado e venne subito
attratto dalla collina di Poggio Civitate ritendendolo un sito promettente per la ricerca
di un insediamento etrusco.
Avvenne così che un gruppo di archeologi iniziarono a scavare nel 1966 a quello che
oggi è divenuto il sito di Poggio Civitate, noto a livello mondiale, ed il lavoro continua.
Ogni stagione gli studenti arrivano dagli Stati Uniti, dalla Svezia, dalla Francia, dalla
Germania ed altri paesi per prendere parte agli scavi e per imparare la storia e
l’importanza dgli insediamenti etruschi e successivi nella zona di Siena.

Oltre alla soddisfacente esperienza degli scavi, durante gli anni studenti ed altre
persone hanno tratto beneficio dall’incontro con molti che, in vario modo, li hanno resi
parte della vita quotidiana delle comunità di Vescovado e Murlo. Fu l’allora sindaco
Maurizio Morviducci ad iniziare l’abitudine di accogliere studenti e visitatori quando
arrivavano a Vescovado per la prima volta, mentre a Murlo la gentilezza di Armida
Ferri, la rinomata “cuoca degli scavi’’, faceva sentire tutti come a casa.
Nei primi anni di scavo, molti lavoratori di Vescovado e delle zone circostanti hanno
offerto il loro lavoro nella scoperta delle mura e delle decorazioni interne, ed insegnarono molto agli studenti sul duro lavoro di uno scavo attento. Al di fuori del lavoro, gli
studenti hanno apprezzato molto i modi amichevoli di tutti quelli, vecchi e giovani, con
cui sono entrati in contatto a Vescovado e a Murlo, dal tabacchino, dal macellaio, nei
bar, alla posta o solo camminando per le strade da Vescovado a Murlo.

Attraverso questa mostra fotografica vogliamo onorare tutti i nostri amici di Vescovado
e Murlo che in tutti questi anni sono stati pionieri di un modo di accogliere gli studenti
e tutti gli altri, rendendoli parte della comunità. Göran “Giorgio’’ Söderberg arrivò
a Murlo dalla Svezia come fotografo degli scavi nel 1968 e subito rimase affascinato
dal paesaggio, dagli edifici, dalla gente che rappresentava sia le radici del passato che
la società del presente. Le fotografie incluse qui rappresentano una piccola selezione
di ritratti e immagini delle persone che ha incontrato durante gli anni di lavoro al sito
di Poggio Civitate o nei paesi, o durante le ore di tempo libero a sedere all ‘aperto
o passeggiando con gli amici. Molte delle persone fotografate non ci sono più, e ne
conserviamo un caro ricordo; altri presero parte ai primi anni di scavo ed hanno storie
da raccontare ai figli ed ai nipoti; altri ancora erano bambini e sono cresciuti assistendo
ad un flusso continuo di nuovi studenti arrivati ogni stagione e visitatori venuti a vedere
il sito ed il museo.

Les traditions de Murlo et Vescovado remontent au temps jadis, et ce ne fut aucune
surprise pour le grand archéologue Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli que le paysage aussi
bien que les gens formaient la continuité entre le passé et le présent. Lorsqu’il se promenait
sur les chemins des collines de Toscane dans les années 20 en parlant aux gens qui
y habitaient et y travaillaient, la terre de Murlo lui semblait une perle précieuse de
l’histoire. Inspiré par le Professeur Bianchi Bandinelli le Professeur Kyle M. Phillips
Jr. visita Murlo et Vescovado, et il fut aussitôt attiré vers la colline de Poggio Civitate
comme un endroit promettant pour entamer des fouilles archéologiques d’une habitation
d’Etrusques.
Et un jour, en 1966, un groupe d’archéologues se lancent à l’expédition de fouilles au
site de Poggio Civitate, maintenant bien connu dans le monde, et ce travail continue
toujours. Chaque saison les étudiants arrivaient des Etats-Unis, de Suède, du Danemark,
de Grande Bretagne, de France, d’Allemagne et d’autres pays pour participer aux
fouilles et pour apprendre l’histoire et l’importance des habitations étrusques et d’autres
plus tard, de la terre de Sienne.
En plus de la riche expérience de ces fouilles les étudiants et toute autre personne ont
eu pendant des années l’avantage de connaître les nombreuses personnes qui de façons
différentes leur ont fait bénéficier de la vie quotidienne des communes de Vescovado
et Murlo respectivement. Ce fut le défunt maire, Maurizio Morviducci, qui donna le
ton à l’accueil des étudiants et des visiteurs lors de leur arrivée la première fois à Vescovado, et à Murlo ce fut la gentillesse d’Armida Ferri, la fameuse cuisinière travaillant
aux fouilles, qui faisait sentir à tout le monde comme chez soi. Pendant les premières
années des fouilles il y avait plusieurs travailleurs de Vescovado et des villages voisins
qui montraient leur talent en découvrant des vestiges de murailles et de décorations
architecturales, et ils avaient beaucoup à enseigner aux étudiants sur le travail dur et
l’importance d’un travail minutieux aux fouilles.

SYMPOSIUM, AUSTIN, TX
FEBRUARY 2008
The symposium Etruscans in Austin was held on
February 28 2008, to honor scholars and friends who
have contributed to the study of Etruscans, both in
Austin, TX and elsewhere. Papers were presented by
Ingrid Edlund-Berry, Ulf Hansson, Ingela Wiman and
Gretchen Meyers, and there were two exhibits, one of
books on Etruscan archaeology from the University
of Texas at Austin libraries, and a photo exhibit with a
selection of photographs from Murlo (Poggio Civitate)
taken by Göran Söderberg. The event was well attended
and has served as the springboard for continued exchange
of ideas and research on the Etruscans, whether in
Texas, in Sweden, or in Italy.
