10th SIMAI Congress
The 10th Congress of SIMAI will be held in Cagliari
from June 21 to 25, 2010 in cooperation with SEMA
(Spanish Society for Applied Mathematics/Sociedad
Española de Matemática Aplicada). The main topics
concern: applied mathematics and applications of
mathematics to industry, technology, environment, cultural
heritage, biology and society. The scientific program
consists of general lectures, minisymposia, round
tables, and contributed papers. All scientific events
will be shared with SEMA. Visit the website of the

Gruppo di Attività in “Scienze della Vita e
dell'Ambiente”
Il Consiglio Direttivo della SIMAI, su proposta del
CIMAB (Centro Interuniversitario per la
Matematica applicata alla Biologia, Medicina e
Ambiente), ha deciso di creare un gruppo di
N.1/2010
attività per le "SCIENZE DELLA VITA E
DELL'AMBIENTE".
Obiettivo del gruppo è quello di stimolare le
applicazioni della Matematica nel campo della
Biologia, della Medicina, della Biotecnologia, e
delle Scienze Ambientali, nonché di stimolare
ricerche di metodi matematici innovativi utili alla
indagine in tali campi.
Questo obiettivo verrà perseguito, per esempio,
• sponsorizzando qualificate iniziative scientifiche e
di formazione,
• stabilendo e sviluppando i contatti tra i soci ed il
mondo biomedico,
• elaborando e coordinando proposte di minisimposi
per i grandi convegni nazionali ed internazionali,
come quelli della SIMAI, della ESMTB, dell'ICIAM,
della SMB,
• segnalando le scadenze per i progetti nazionali ed
internazionali,
• lanciando proposte editoriali.
Il gruppo è aperto alla partecipazione, ai contributi
ed alle proposte non solo di matematici, informatici,
fisici ed ingegneri che vogliano contribuire allo
sviluppo delle metodologie basate sui modelli
matematici e sulla loro simulazione sia da un punto
di vista generale che attraverso la soluzione di
rilevanti problemi applicativi, ma anche a biologi e
medici che siano interessati all'applicazione di metodi
matematici per lo studio di quei sistemi complessi
che caratterizzano il loro settore di ricerca

European Multi-Grid Conference EMG 2010

The Conference provides a forum for reseachers to
present and discuss recent research on the
development,
theory,

multigrid, multilevel, and multiscale methodologies.
Previous EMG conferences were held in Cologne

School on Mathematical Ecology and Evolution
2010, an EMS-ESMTB school in Applied

Si svolgerà in Sicilia il bimestre intensivo INDAM
“Analytical and Numerical Problems in Fluid
Dynamics and Applications”.
Obiettivo del periodo è riunire esperti del settore,
ricercatori e studenti interessati ai recenti sviluppi
della fluidodinamica.
Sia aspetti analitici che numerici verranno trattati,
con una particolare enfasi alle applicazioni. Durante
tale periodo si svolgeranno a Catania dei tutorial che
forniranno una introduzione all'argomento per
studenti di dottorato e giovani ricercatori. Un
programma preliminare e le informazioni sulle date e
i luoghi del bimestre si trovano al sito. E' previsto un
piccolo supporto economico a studenti di dottorato
e giovani ricercatori che intendano partecipare
all'iniziativa. Chiunque sia interessato è invitato a

Corso di Dottorato "Regularization Methods for
High Dimensional Learning"

La Scuola di Dottorato di Scienze e Tecnologie della
Conoscenza dell'Università degli Studi di Genova
organizza un corso su "Regularization Methods for
High Dimensional Learning" tenuto dalla Dott.
Francesca Odone (DISI- Universita' di Genova) e dal
Dott. Lorenzo Rosasco (DISI-Universita' di Genova
e CBCL – MIT).
Il corso si svolgerà, previo il raggiungimento del
numero minimo di 20 iscritti, presso il DISI (http://

Descrizione del Corso:
Lo scopo del corso è quello di fornire
un'introduzione ai più recenti metodi di
apprendimento automatico per il trattamento di dati
in alta dimensione. Tale argomento è di interesse in
numerose branche delle scienze applicate, quali la
visione computazionale e la bioinformatica, dove i
dati sono descritti da migliaia di attributi. In questi
scenari, il problema della bassa cardinalità dei
campioni diventa rilevante e, nella maggior parte dei
casi, gli strumenti della statistica classica non
consentono di ottenere risultati soddisfacenti.
Oltre a presentare tecniche di apprendimento ormai
consolidate, quali i metodi di kernel, il corso prevede
una descrizione dettagliata di diverse principi ed
algoritmi per la modellazione di dati in alta
dimensione. In particolare verrano discussi algoritmi
recentemente proposti basati sulla geometria
intrinseca dei dati (apprendimento da varietà),
sull'analisi di segnali sparsi e sull'apprendimento
congiunto di molteplici problemi.
Il corso pone particolare enfasi agli aspetti
algoritmici e prevede sessioni di laboratorio (svolte in
ambiente matlab) durante le quali gli studenti
possono sperimentare con le tecniche di
apprendimento presentate.
Saranno inoltre oggetto del corso:
– applicazioni tratte dalla visione computazione e
dalla bioinformatica,
– discussione dei principali concetti della teoria
quali le proprietà di generalizzazione e la
regolarizzazione.

The school is organized by SMI-INDAM and

PDE constraints. It will be hosted in the Palazzone

KEPLER Award for European Young Scientists
(KEYS)
The European Academy of Sciences (EAS)
announces an award for highly talented young
scientists successfully working in European
Universities or Research Institutions.
The award is granted to an international team of
young scientists, selected in a competition for a
workshop, planned and organized by the team and
covering interdisciplinary topics chosen by the
applicants in a field selected by EAS.
The award consists of financial and organisational
support to run the workshop.
The starting Kepler workshop is dedicated to
Modelling and Simulation in the Life Sciences and is
planned to take place in Heidelberg (Germany) in
2010/11, in cooperation with the Heidelberg
Academy of Sciences and Humanities (HAW), the
State Academy of State of Baden-Württemberg.
Help for the local organisation will be provided.
The basic financial grant for this workshop will be
10.000 €. The proponents of the winning team will
be invited to become Kepler fellows of EAS for 5
years and to cooperate with members of the
Academy.
Aims
This award has the goal to stir the cooperation of
young researchers in Europe interested in research
crossing the borders of disciplines and states. By
offering communication and cooperation with its

members the interactions between generations is
going to be enhanced. Fellows will have the right and
are expected to take part in scientific activities of the
EAS.
Application
The teams, participating in the competition, should
have at least two, but not more than four members,
they have to be interdisciplinary and its members
should come from institutions located at least in two
European countries. The applicants should not be
older than 35 years and not yet in a permanent
position as professors. All members of the team
should have received the doctoral degree and
successfully published papers.
The proposed list of supported participants should
include at least two thirds from European countries
(either EU or associated states). The list of proposed
participants may include senior scientists, who are
supposed to be financially self supported.

The deadline for applications for the first Kepler
Award is April 30, 2010.
Expected decision by the Selection Committee is
mid June, 2010.

Faculty Positions in Computational
Mathematics at the Ecole Polytechnique
Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL)
The EPFL announces the creation of a new
Mathematics Institute in Computational Science and
Engineering (MATHICSE).
In this framework EPFL is planning to make a
number of appointments at the assistant, associate
professor or full professor level.
Candidates for these new positions are expected to
have an exceptional track record in research that
conjugates mathematical and numerical techniques
for the solution of complex problems in science and
engineering.
Successful candidates will establish and lead vigorous
independent research programs, interact with
existing projects in the CSE area across the EPFL

Postdoc position at Kansas State University
K-State EpiCenter, an interdisciplinary center
focusing on computational epidemiology at Kansas
State University, Manhattan - Kansas, invites
applications for a Post Doctoral position affiliated
with the department of Electrical and Computer
Engineering.
The successful candidate will work on a project
aiming at developing mathematical models and
software tools for simulation of epidemic in rural
regions at different scales and for dynamic
environmental inputs. The project goal is to design
efficient, realistic simulations for prediction and
mitigation of infectious diseases transmissible
among humans and animals.
Applicants should possess a PhD in Electrical
Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer
Engineering, Statistics, Computer Science, System
Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or related areas,
and have experience in computing programming (e.g.
C/C++, Java etc).
Proven ability to work independently and experience
in numerical simulation methods and complex
networks theory are considered to be important
assets for this position. High motivation, ability to
quickly adapt to a new environment, excellent
written English, and good personal and
communication skills are required for this position.
The position is available starting immediately and the
duration is one year extensible for a second year.

Visti i pareri espressi dal C.U.N. nelle sedute del 5 novembre 2009 e del 19 novembre 2009.
Viste le Linee Guida del C.I.V.R. per la valutazione della ricerca, sulle quali il C.U.N. ha espresso
parere favorevole nella riunione del 27 gennaio 2010.
Il C.U.N. , ai fini del summenzionato art. 3-ter commi 1,2,4 del d.l. 180/2008, formula la seguente

1) Sono da considerarsi pubblicazioni scientifiche:

gli articoli a firma singola o plurima pubblicati su riviste scientifiche (rispondenti ai
requisiti di legge per le pubblicazioni periodiche), identificate dal possesso di un codice
ISSN e dall’esistenza di una procedura di revisione degli articoli sottomessi per la
pubblicazione che subordini l’accettazione al parere favorevole di almeno due esperti
terzi e possibilmente anonimi o comunque al giudizio di un Comitato Scientifico (o
organismo equivalente) che offra garanzie di autorevolezza e di terzietà;
b)
le monografie di ricerca, identificate dal possesso di un codice ISBN e dal
superamento di una procedura di accettazione per la pubblicazione basata sull’esistenza
di un Comitato Scientifico o di una Direzione Scientifica (della Casa Editrice o della
Collana in cui la monografia è pubblicata) e su meccanismi di revisione che offrano
garanzie di terzietà;

i prodotti quali brevetti, composizioni, disegni, design, performance, esposizioni,

pubblicazioni (anche non curate dall’autore del prodotto) e/o documentazione atta a
consentirne la valutazione.
Le pubblicazioni in forma elettronica, purché conformi alla normativa vigente in materia e
soddisfacenti i criteri di scientificità di cui al punto 1), sono da considerarsi alla stessa
stregua delle pubblicazioni a stampa.
L’accertamento dell’esistenza di pubblicazioni scientifiche nel periodo di riferimento spetta,
ai sensi dell’art. 3-ter comma 1 del succitato d.l. 180/2008, all’Autorità Accademica
competente, che potrà servirsi dell’ausilio del Nucleo di Valutazione di Ateneo al fine di
identificare il soddisfacimento dei criteri di scientificità di cui al punto 1). Spetta all'Autorità
competente anche la valutazione delle eventuali differenze tra la data di accettazione e
quella di pubblicazione.
Al fine di agevolare le attività di accertamento di cui al punto 3), il C.U.N. potrà
predisporre, con l’ausilio delle associazioni scientifiche e delle comunità di ricerca di
riferimento, elenchi di riviste di riconosciuto carattere scientifico, soggetti ad aggiornamento
periodico, possibilmente annuale.
Dovrà essere previsto un periodo transitorio, di durata biennale, sufficiente a consentire alle
comunità di ricerca e alle case editrici di adeguarsi pienamente ai criteri indicati. In tale
