Editoriale SIMAI2010
Il Convegno Biennale SIMAI2010 si è svolto a
Cagliari dal 21 al 25 Giugno. Il Convegno è stato
organizzato in collaborazione con la Società
Spagnola di Matematica Applicata SEMA. Sedi del
Convegno sono state la Facoltà di Ingegneria per la
sessione inaugurale di lunedi mattina e quella di
Architettura per le successive.

fornisce tutte le informazioni di carattere scientifico
ed organizzativo, dalla composizione del Comitato
Organizzatore a quella del Consiglio Scientifico, che
ha individuato le Conferenze Plenarie che sono state
affidate a quattro conferenzieri SIMAI (L.
Formaggia, B. Piccoli, L. Preziosi e A. Tramontano)
ed a quattro conferenzieri SEMA (C. Pares, P.
Quintela, J.L. Vasquez e E. Zuazua).
In sintesi, i dati del convengo sono qui riassunti:
oltre 350 partecipanti, di cui circa 60 provenienti
dalla Spagna, con quasi 400 comunicazioni articolate
in 48 minisimposia. I temi trattati sono stati quelli
classici della matematica applicata e industriale:
problemi matematici in biologia e medicina, in
fluidodinamica, in meccanica dei continui, in
N.2/2010
matematica finanziaria, nel calcolo scientifico, solo
per citarne alcuni. La lista completa dei misimposia e

Da segnalare che il giorno Mercoledi 23 Giugno si è
svolta una tavola rotonda sul tema dell’esperienza dei
Corsi di laurea in Ingegneria Matematica, mentre la
Dott.ssa P. Antonietti, vincitrice del premio Fausto
Saleri conferito nel corso del precedente convegno
SIMAI2008, ha presentato i risultati delle ricerche
finanziate con il contributo del premio stesso.
All’assemblea dei Soci SIMAI ha partecipato anche il
Professor Cinquini Presidente dell’AIMETA
(Associazione Italiana di Meccanica Teorica e
Applicata). Dall’assemblea è emerso l’interesse e la
necessità culturale di un migliore collegamento fra le
due società con iniziative comuni come già avviene a
livello Europeo.
In aggiunta a questi dati riteniamo importante
segnalare che la partecipazione, sia dal punto di vista
della numerosità che dal punto di vista qualitativo, è
stata superiore alle aspettativa nonostante le
difficoltà di finanziamento della ricerca che tutti
conosciamo. Anche la partecipazione dei colleghi
spagnoli è stata superiore alle aspettative e con
grande soddisfazione possiamo dire che sessioni,
tavole rotonde e discussioni generali hanno visto una
partecipazione importante.

verra’ pubblicata sui prossimi due numeri del volume
2010 della nuova rivista SIMAI: “Communications in
Applied
and
Industrial
Mathematics”

Potranno essere sottomessi articoli non pubblicati
(anche parzialmente altrove). Questi verranno
sottoposti a un referaggio rapido, ma accurato,
utilizzando due referees indipendenti. L’augurio è
che la rivista si affermi presto a livello di
pubblicazione di prestigio.

Carissimi,
sono lieto di informarvi che il Congresso
SIMAI2010 ha visto la partecipizione della Società
AIMETA Associazione Italiana di Meccanica Teorica
ed Applicata.
Il Collega Cinquini (Pavia) Presidente AIMETA e
Cuomo (Catania) Coordinatore del Gruppo di
Metodi Computazionali in Meccanica hanno
auspicato una più stretta collaborazione fra SIMAI e
AIMETA in particolare fra i gruppi coordinati da
Falcone e Cuomo.

EMS-ESMTB School in Applied Mathematics
University of Helsinki, 22-29 August, Turku, Finland
We are pleased to announce the Helsinki Summer
School on Mathematical Ecology and Evolution
2010, an EMS-ESMTB school in Applied
Mathematics. The one-week intense program
consists of five topics:

Course on Finite Element program
The Department of Geotechnical Engineering and
Geosciences of the Technical University of
Catalonia (UPC) is organising a short course on the
Finite Element program CODE_BRIGHT to be
held in Barcelona on 9th and 10th of September
2010. The course will take place after the Fifth
International Conference of Unsaturated soils
(UNSAT 2010) to be held on 6th to 8th of
September 2010 in Barcelona.
CODE_BRIGHT is a general-purpose code for the
3-D analysis of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical
(THM) phenomena in geological media (including
conservative transport of chemical species).

Postdoctoral Researcher in modelling and data
analysis for systems biology
This is a position in the collaborative ERASYSBIO+
funded project "Living with uninvited guests comparing plant and animal responses to endocytic
invasions". The project aims to understand the way
in which the Salmonella bacterium interacts with its
host during invasion of the bacterium using a
systems biology approach. The post is available for
36 months and is based in the Mathematical Biology
group at Royal Holloway, University of London.
You will develop new methods to extract
information about the functionality and properties
of the pathways from the systems biology data, and
apply these methods to data on the Salmonella
bacterium, generated within the collaborative project.
You should have a PhD degree in a quantitative
science (like biology, statistics, mathematics or
physics), experience in modelling and statistics and
an affinity towards Biology. The main aim of this
post is to apply and develop methods of qualitative
statistical inference to interpret systems biology data,
in particular time resolved data of the infection
process of the Salmonella bacterium. This position
would provide an opportunity for those with
modelling experience to apply their skills to a project
in systems biology

PhD position at Imperial College London
A PhD studentship is available at the Dept. of Earth
Science & Engineering, Imperial College, London
(UK) on Computing Entropy and Ordering of Granular
matter: From Description to Prediction.
Duration 42 months, starting from October, 2010.
Description:
Gaining a quantitative theoretical understanding of
random close packing is a challenge with a long
history. The problem has gained importance over the
N.2/2010
years, as it is key to a number of tough scientific and
technological challenges that involve granular matter.
The number of distinct configurations of randomly
packed structures is enormous and little is known
about the ‘packing entropy’ (i.e. The logarithm of
this number). Circumstantial evidence on this issue is
either indirect or limited to small systems. A
statistical-mechanical formalism has been developed
for granular and porous media, but it requires input
of information: the analogue of the ’density of
states’ and a temperature-like quantity called
’compactivity’. The calculation of these requires
quantitative knowledge of the packing entropy of
macroscopic jammed structures. Moreover, the
validity of the very assumptions of the formalism is
unclear and requires testing.
This is a joint 42 months theoretical and numerical
project between two world-renown leaders in the
field in Cambridge University and Imperial College
London. Its aims are:
1. To apply a novel method to compute directly the
number of configurations of random granular
packings;
2. To provide essential input data for theoretical
statistical mechanical analysis;
3. To test theoretical predictions against developed
numerical experiments;
4. To derive quantitative relations between packing
history and structural characteristics;
5. To quantify the dependence of granular crystal
nucleation rate on parameters of driving excitations.
The collaboration will involve a team of four: Dr
Rafi Blumenfeld, Prof Daan Frenkel, a postdoctoral
research associate and a PhD student. We also
collaborate with world leaders in condensed matter
physics, earth sciences and chemistry. Our team will
be in a unique position to achieve the above aims,
having developed already powerful methods that are
still not available to other groups in the field. For
example, we can currently compute the entropy of
up to e^70 (!) distinct configurations and we have
developed a uniquely useful method to describe,
quantify and analyse local granular structures.

Post-Doc position at Yamagata University, Japan
The Graduate School of Science and Engineering,
Yamagata University, Yonezawa, Japan has an
immediate opening for a postdoctoral position.
The
successful
candidate
will
join
a
modelling/theoretical research program in the area
of soft matter science/complex fluids/polymer
physics with a focus on flow phenomena. Within the
framework of the research program and subject to
frequent discussions, the candidate will have
significant freedom regarding both the choice of
research problem(s) and the direction of research.
The candidate will have the opportunity to interact
with a diverse group of modelling, theoretical and
experimental research groups at Yonezawa and
elsewhere. Communication of results through
publications and presentations at conferences is an
important component of the work.
Ideally, the candidate will have Ph. D in engineering,
physics, chemistry or a related discipline with
expertise in soft condensed matter, complex fluids,
polymer physics or statistical mechanics. Simulation
experience is preferred, but not necessary.
Annual salary is approximately 3,500,000 - 4,000,000
Japanese yen. The initial contract is for a period of
one year with possibility of extension for additional
year(s). The starting date is somewhat flexible but
within the next few months. A late summer/autumn
start would be preferable.
