Description
The Rocca Viscontea of Castell?Arquato is a splendid example of Medieval
architecture built upon the wish of Luchino Visconti between 1342 and 1349, inherited
by the Sforza family and finally by the Farnese, Dukes of Parma and Piacenza. The
fortress hosts a new exhibition with the main torture devices used between the Middle
Ages and the period of the Holy Inquisition to force a person to confess murders,
witchcraft or conspiracies. If there is something that always existed in history are the
cases of body torture, with the most gruesome techniques one could imagine: nails,
poles, wheels and many other tools that seemed innocuous at first sight, but macabre
if used to do violence to another person.
Among these tools there were those invented by the Holy Inquisition to extort
confessions during the trials that characterised this institution: the The "Virgin of
Nuremberg", the "Gibbet", the "Guillotine" are among the most famous, accompanied
by devices such as the "Inquisition chairs", the "Circles to Crush Heads", the
"Crucifix/Dagger" and many more. i
These devices were extraordinarily sophisticated and prove how the human
imagination and genius concocted the most atrocious tools to torture people.
The torture devices have been created by Associazione L'Inquisizione, taking
inspiration from ancient iconographies, and all the pieces exhibited are accompanied
by descriptions and images.
The exhibition ?Strumenti di tortura tra Medioevo e Inquisizione? was creted by Antea
Progetti and Servizi per la Cultura e il Turismo scrl in collaboration with
Castell?Arquato Municipality and Associazione L?inquisizione. It is open from May
16th 2015 to January 6th 2016, when the fortress is open.
