Descrizione funzionamento applicatori 1.1. This section describes the different types of applicators to be installed on the labelling machine, that is to say, the devices which allow applying the label to the product. The labelling machine can work in three different positions: - “in vertical position” to label the top surface of the products - “in reverse vertical position” to label the bottom surface of the product. - “in LOW POSITION” to label the side surfaces of the product that are parallel to the advance direction of the same products. 1.2. Active pneumatic applicators 1.2 Applicatori pneumatici attivi All applicators are composed by a pneumatic piston, which moves a metal and teflon intake plate. The label, which film has been removed by a fixed labelling tongue, is delivered on the teflon plate of the application unit and kept in that position by a vacuum generator (Venturi meter); then the piston will move the intake plate and the label towards the product. At the photostart signal, an air-jet will stick the label on the product and then the piston will return to repeat the cycle. ! ATTENTION! This kind of applicator has moving mechanical parts that often cannot be protected by anti-accident rigid protections, since these sheds reduce the machine’s performances. ARCA Etichette S.p.A. always advises the final user to build around the complete machine, an anti-accidents protection equipped with positive reaction safety microswitches. The aim of these protections is to reduce the number of openings and to keep parts of the body far from dangerous parts of the applicator. Furthermore ARCA Etichette S.p.A in order to increase the security level of its machines, when these are equipped with pneumatic applicatorss, is equipped with the pneumatic plant of the machine with a gradual reset security valve. This valve immediately interrupts the pressure of the pneumatic plant, whenever the labelling machine is switched off or the thread on the connector of the control box, is interrupted. The main characteristic of this security valve is that it does not open completely when supplied. This valve opens completely, transferring all the air downstream, both under pressure and in capacity, only after the pressure of the downstream circuit is the half of the pressure in the upstream circuit. The dynamic of this safety valve enables to position the actuator in the home position without any risk, since the movement is slow and regular. Furthermore, interrupting the supply of the same valve (opening the doors of the anti-accidents protection) the air flow is blocked instantaneously, draining the pressure of the pneumatic plant set downstream of the same valve, completely removing the danger of the pneumatic pistons on the applicator. Questi applicatori possono essere configurati (tramite l’unità di controllo) per funzionare nei seguenti modi: PSSH PVT categories: PSS: the pneumatic actuator is linear and is composed of a single anti-rotation cylinder, which is equipped with the label application plate at one end. PSSH: the pneumatic actuator is linear and is composed of two guides which improve the label application precision. PVT: it allows applying the label on surfaces placed perpendicularly with respect to the label distribution position. It is conceptually very similar to the PSS, with the only difference that the application plate movement is rotating. 1.2.2 Dispositivi per attuatori a corsa variabile remains fixed in the inside position; once the photo-start signal is emitted the piston exits toward the product, when it has reached the end of stroke (signalled to the control box by an electro-magnetic limit switch, set on the base of the piston) an air-jet is emitted, which transfers the label on the product, then the piston returns repeating the described cycle. 2) CYLINDER OUT (cycles PSSOUT): the label is delivered on the intake plate fixed to the piston. The piston exits toward the product, when it has reached the end of stroke (signalled to the control box by an electro-magnetic limit switch, set on the base of the piston) an air-jet is emitted, which transfers the label on the product, then the piston returns to repeat a new cycle. 3) PRINTING AND APPLICATION IN REAL TIME (PSSPROD cycles): with the photo-start signal, the label is printed and distributed uniformly on the suction plate. The pneumatic actuator is positioned in maximum elongation towards the product and at the end of the stroke (signalled by an electromagnetic limit switch positioned on the cylinder liner), an air jet transfers the label on the product, then the piston retracts and restarts the cycle described. Thanks to this kind of technology, the range of the products to be labelled is very wide. In fact, the air jet allows the adaptation of the label (with fair results) to the side surface of circular-base products (the limits depend on the size and weight of the label) as well as to irregular-shape products, such as plastic or paper bags, since the application is not connected with the speed of the product, but with the frequency. These devices allow applying the labels on variable size products with a very high precision. With differential pressure switch: The label is distributed onto the application plate, which remains motionless in retracted position. With the start signal, the cylinder is positioned in maximum elongation up to touching the product (which must be motionless in labelling position). The label positioned on the suction plate, thanks to the vacuum generated by the Venturi meter, is transferred to the product by contact. This contact, signalled by a PEN switch (differential pressure switch), informs the control logic of the labelling machine that the labelling took place, then the same logic informs the pneumatic actuator that a new operating cycle must be effected. The working is the same as the differential pressure switch applicator, with the difference that the pneumatic actuator is retracted by means of a mechanic microswitch, fixed to the suction plate. With photoelectric cell: The working is the same as the differential pressure switch applicator, with the difference that the pneumatic actuator is retracted by means of a photoelectric cell, fixed to the suction plate. Thanks to such system, the labelling can take place while the product is moving since the actuator DOES NOT touch the product. The DUAL ACTION applicator is able to apply two labels to two different sides of a moving product (generally pallets or big boxes). 1.2.4 Funzionamento applicatori tipo “DUAL ACTION” 1.2.4 Working of the “DUAL ACTION” applicators L’etichetta viene erogata sulla piastra di applicazione, che rimane immobile nella posizione retratta. The label is printed and distributed uniformly on the application plate which remains motionless in retracted position. With start signal No. 1, the pneumatic actuator is immediately positioned in maximum elongation towards the moving product and, as soon as it touches it, it activates an air jet that transfers the label on the product, then it immediately retracts. After retracting in quiescent position, it prints, distributes the second label and stands by. With start signal No. 2, the pneumatic actuator is stretched out and applies the second label to the rear of the moving product. The cylinder retraction, in any point of its stroke in both cycles, is determined by the PEN transducer, whose working is described in the PSSH APPLICATORS section. /12 -- Applicatori pneumatici attivi 1.2.3 Applicators model “DUAL ACTION” NOTES: 1) In the DUAL ACTION configuration, the two start photoelectric cells must be connected with the suitable connector C1 (see the section relative to the wiring diagrams of the manual). Active pneumatic applicators APP_PN_Value 1.3. Regolazione applicatori pneumatici 1.3. Impostare la pre-erogazione in modo di avere l’etichetta a filo lama staccatore (vedi manuale stampante/etichettatrice). 1.3.2 Regolazione posizione degli attuatori pneumatici It is important to correctly adjust the stripper with the Teflon plate of the applicator (herein after referred to as “suction plate”) to obtain a correct distribution of the labels from the silicone paper to the suction plate. The application plate must be adjusted in order to obtain a 10-15° angle between the label and the suction plate during the label distribution. An excessive corner can cause a 10 - 15° wrong positioning of the label on the intake plate. In some cases for too rigid labels or metalized ones, it could be necessary to position the labelling tongue in such a way that the corner is equal to zero and that the labels are delivered upright on the intake plate. The labelling machine stripper must be on the same level as the chamfer (A) on the application plate (C). The exiting label will follow the correct angle of 15° and at the end of distribution it will be completely under the level of the stripper, thus avoiding the loss of the label (B) during the down-stroke of the pneumatic actuator. Correctly set the pre-distribution, so that the label is on the same level as the stripper blade (see the printer/labelling machine manual). 1.3.2 Adjusting the pneumatic actuators position La procedura che ora esporremo conThe here mentioned procedure enasente di avere buoni risultati duraturi bles to obtain good and time lasting nel tempo con la maggior parte dei tipi results with most of the labels. di etichette. At this point the inclination corner of the label band should be at its maximum level (please remember that a correct angle should be 10-15°, therefore, if necessary, repeat the above mentioned operations until a better result is obtained). 1.3.3 Regolazione del sistema “air-assist” 1.3.3 “Air-assist” system adjustment Ci sono vari fattori da considerare quando si effettuano le regolazioni necessarie a determinare la corretta posizione dell’etichetta sulla piastra di aspirazione. When the adjustment for the correct positioning of the label is done, it is necessary to take different elements into consideration. The intake plate is equipped with tiny holes that have both the function to intake (that is to retain the label when its silicone paper has been removed) and to blast (when the label is ejected by an air-blast and delivered on the product). It is important to get a correct alignment of the AIR ASSIST so that the label can be transferred correctly on the pneumatic grid. According to the dimension or to the shape of the label it could be necessary to adjust the pressure and the alignment of the airassist hose set between the labelling tongue and the aspiration plate. This device could be in fact adjusted using set wrenches supplied with the machine, taking care to position the small air ejection hole in the middle of the label and that the air ejection direction is slightly slanted towards the feeding direction of the label. By means of a special support, it is possible to approach or retreat the air assist tube from the application plate in order to enhance the effectiveness. 10 - 15° 1.3.4 Pressures adjustment Even if the entering working pressure of the machine (read on the manometer-filter-pressure regulator-general valve group) must be 6 bar, the air blast pressure of the air assist (B) and the vacuum pressure or VACUUM (A) can be adjusted from 0 to P max (the pressure set on the entering pressure regulator must be 6 bar) by means of two independent pneumatic regulators marked with the corresponding codes. During the adjustment it is necessary to keep in mind what follows: - insufficient air-assist: the label does not adhere on the intake plate. - air-assist too strong: the label is pushed beyond the plate or is not aligned on the suction plate. - Too strong vacuum: the label does not slide regularly on the intake plate. General test and final adjustments: - Uniformly distribute a label by means of the FEED key or single-distribution button of the printer and make sure that it is correctly positioned on the suction plate. - check the cylinder’s stroke and adjust, if necessary, its output and return speed by the adjusters (C) (output) and (D) (return), and the end of stroke deceleration by the fit C adjustment device set near to the already mentioned adjustments. D NOTE: if the piston works too fast, excessive vibrations are caused, which reduce the accuracy and the operating autonomy of the whole system. Manually distribute some labels uniformly (by means of the FEED key or single-distribution button of the printer) to check the exact position of the air-assist tube as well as the correct air pressure. In fact, the exact position can be found when the label is positioned correctly on the pneumatic mask. 0,5 - 1,5 cm aspirazione. Togliere aria all’impianto pneumatico tramite la valvola generale (posta sul gruppo manometro regolatore-filtro), portare il cilindro alla sua massima elongazione e regolare l’altezza della macchina in base al tipo di applicatore in possesso: 1 cm 1.3.5 Prova di funzionamento e regolazioni finali Position a sample of the product which must be labelled on the transport and adjust the position of the label with the adjustment wheels in order to position the intake plate above the product checking that it is as parallel as possible to the product. Take away the air from the pneumatic plant by the general valve (set on the manometer-adjuster-filter unit), set the cylinder in its maximum output position and adjust the height of the machine according to the type of application unit: • “PSS”,”PSSH” la piastra di aspirazione, con cilindro in massima elongazione, deve distare circa 0,5-1,5 cm dal prodotto. • “PSS”,”PSSH” the intake plate with cylinder in its maximum position must be 0,5-1,5 cm from the product. • “PVT” la piastra di aspirazione deve trovarsi sulla faccia frontale rispetto al senso di avanzamento del prodotto, nella posizione in cui si desidera applicare l’etichetta. switch; the intake plate with the cylinder out must be about 1 cm over the product’s surface (in order to give PEN time enough to feel the pressure variation). • “PVT” the intake plate must be on the front face respect to the feeding direction of the product, in the position in which the label must be stuck. 1.4. 10/12 -- Applicatori pneumatici attivi • with stop photoelectric cell; position the intake plate against the product surface and than adjust the photocell or the micro-switch in the reading position. • with end of stroke micro-switch with springs; the intake plate must touch the product surface and cause a slight tension the spring, than adjust the micro-switch to set them in the reading position. Now reset the air in the pneumatic plant; wait some seconds until the plant is ready and try to eject and apply a label on the product, by pushing the single stroke button, checking how it adheres on the product. Electrically connect the photo-start photocell to the control unit and connect it physically to the transport unit; action the transport letting it pass in front of the products photocell. 1.4. Differential pressure switch regulation The PEN transducer is the sensor that causes the pneumatic actuator to retract. B To adjust it, it is necessary to set a working pressure on the main air manometer. In fact, any pressure change requires the regular adjustment of the transducer. Now, open the back protection cover, act on the adjusting screw (A) to enable the yellow exit LED (B) and the cylinder retraction. Carry on some tests with the product positioned under the pneumatic actuator to check the pressure degree the actuator exerts on the product. Turn the screw clockwise to increase pressure and anticlockwise to decrease the contact between the actuator and the product. A 1.5. Regolazione valvola a ripristino graduale 1.5. This valve is available on all the machines equipped with pneumatic actuator. It is used to delay, just for a few seconds, the insertion of the maximum air pressure when starting the air system or upon the opening and closing of the safety contact on the external connector (see wiring diagrams). Turn the yellow screw (A) clockwise to increase the delay and anticlockwise to immediately obtain the maximum pressure. 1.6. 11/12 -- Applicatori pneumatici attivi Position the photo-start photocell in such a way that it gives the labelling consent to the Control Unit when the product labelling area is positioned under the grid covered by the label. Possible tiny adjustments, mainly in advance to the transport direction of the products on the transport band, will be necessary later on, to moving transport when the production starts, in order to compensate the response times. If the band speed has changed, further tiny adjustments of the photocell could be necessary. Active pneumatic applicators APP_PN_Value 1.7.
