In the past you would have been entirely on your own if something went wrong. If something goes wrong today it's often just a matter of minutes until another car comes along, at least during the tourist season. Fuel and supplies are available at several points along the Gibb River Road, and so are tyre and mechanical repairs. But even if the idea of your vehicle breaking down out here is not as scary as it used to be, it's still a major inconvenience. And a rather costly one as well. There have been seven deaths on the Gibb River Road since 1993, and many travellers manage to get themselves into trouble through their inexperience and their lack of preparation. Don't ruin your holidays through a road crash... Let's make sure your trip will be smooth and just wonderful all the way. Here is what you should know about the Gibb River Road conditions and about the hazards that you might encounter on your drive. Permits/Permission: You don't need a permit to travel on the Gibb River Road, the Kalamburu Road or the Mitchell Plateau Road. However, you do need a permit if you want to enter the Kalamburu Aboriginal community, and you have to organise it before you leave. Any of the Kimberley tourist information centres can do that for you, or you can do it online at the Department of Indigenous Affairs. All the land either side of the Gibb River Road and other roads in the area is private land. If you want to go of exploring on any tracks other than the sign posted gorge access tracks you have to get permission form the owners! Any travel on roads across Aboriginal land requires a permit Your Vehicle: Make sure your vehicle is mechanically sound and have it checked over and serviced before you leave. If you have no four wheel drive (4WD) experience or are driving a hired car make sure you familiarise yourself with your vehicle. Know its limitations. And above all, know how to engage the four wheel drive! Every year people get stuck and cause expensive rescue operations, and all the rescuers have to do is engage the four wheel drive... I have been contacted by people asking if it is possible to drive the Gibb River Road in a conventional two wheel drive vehicle (2WD), or if they can take their caravans. Well, it has been done before. Ìm not saying it is impossible. But taking a caravan is madness. Don't do it (Off-road trailers are ok.). Taking a 2WD during the middle of the dry season is not quite as mad, but I don't see the point. You will probably make it across the Gibb River Road ok. You do run a risk of severely damaging your vehicle in one of the river or creek crossings because of your low clearance. But the main point is, all the attractions that make the Gibb River Road a worthwhile drive are on side tracks, and pretty much all of those are strictly four wheel drive only. You wouldn't see anything! Road Conditions: Mostly awful... Most of the Gibb River Road is heavily corrugated, enough to rattle your teeth out. It gets graded regularly which certainly improves it, but that never lasts long. However, as long as you make sure that all you gear is stowed securely (lids on tightly etc.) the corrugations are only a nuisance. So is the dust... At the start of the season (April/May) you may encounter holes and washouts left after the wet season rains. However, since all the steep sections where the Gibb River Road climbs across the ranges have been sealed this isn't really a problem any more (But watch out on any side tracks.).The only real concern at the start of the season are creek and river crossings. Just because the Gibb River Road is open doesn't mean that your car will make it across! It comes back to knowing the limitations of your vehicle. To get up to date information about road conditions and water depth ask the nearest tourist information centre, or at the Main Roads Department (free call 1800 013 314). It's so obvious I nearly forgot to mention it: the Gibb River Road is of course closed during the wet season. The date it closes and reopens depends on when and how much it rains. The Gibb River Road is generally open from May to November. However, early or late in the season you better double check the road conditions and water depth, and be flexible with your plans Driving/Speed: This one is obvious, too, you would think, but when you look at the accidents that happen every year... You can't drive on unsealed roads at the same speed as on a sealed road! You have to slow down! Corrugations are particularly hazardous. Flying over the top of them might feel a lot more comfortable, but think about how little traction you have when you only just touch the top of those bumps... Especially around bends it is very easy to lose control. So take it easy. Dust is always a problem on the Gibb River Road, but don't let it tempt you into overtaking a slower vehicle unless you can actually see the road ahead. You should also drive with your headlights on so the vehicle you are approaching and any oncoming traffic have a chance to see you. If you do overtake anybody put some space between them and you before you move back to your side of the road and shower their windscreen with gravel... The Gibb River Road is an important transport road for the cattle industry. You will come across many road trains, trucks with three, four or more trailers. And they move... Whatever you do, keep in mind that these road trains can't just jump on the breaks and stop in a hurry, so stay out of their way. Don't take any risks trying to overtake them. You will need a lot of clear straight road ahead to do so, and how you are going to see that in their dust cloud I don't know... Last but not least: at dusk and dawn there is always a risk of animals on the road. Not only wildlife but also cattle are a big hazard. Remember that all the land along the Gibb River Road is cattle farming country, and that the road is not necessarily fenced. (More information and tips for driving on unsealed roads in the Kimberley, and some tips on what to do when you get bogged or stuck, can be found here (soon): Driving in the Kimberley.) Tyres: The Gibb River Road is famous for its sharp rocks and has a bad reputation for shredding tyres. You will need to take at least two spare tyres (and ideally extra tubes, repair kit and air compressor), but I know of many people who ruined three or more. That can be 17 avoided, you know? I don't have much faith in any of the tyre pressure theories. Some people say run your tyres soft (so they give a bit when in contact with rocks), some they run them hard (so the side walls are kept straight and don't come in contact with rocks). My theory is, if you run them soft you ruin them because the side walls aren't straight, and if you run them hard you ruin them because they don't give. But there is one method to prevent punctures that works without fail: go slow. If you dislike changing tyres (and paying for them) as much as I do just keep your speed down at 60 kph or less on the rocky sections. It will greatly improve your chances. (Not saying I guarantee you won't get a puncture some other way...). I have yet to change a tyre on the Gibb River Road, or any dirt road for that matter. I have yet to overtake another vehicle there, too RIVER CROSSING: River crossings are another popular way to get into trouble on the Gibb River Road. Luckily the water usually disappears pretty quickly, so this is only a problem at the beginning of the season. I already said it, just because the road has been opened does not mean that you will make it across all rivers. It really depends on your car. A few rules of thumb: If the water flows too strong for you to walk across then it is not safe to drive across. (The flow is more important then the depth.) A water depth of no more than 50cm is recommended for 4x4 vehicles. A water depth of no more than 20cm is recommended for 2WD vehicles. Of course it is possible to cross water a lot deeper than that if you have the right vehicle, but you should know your car and you should know what you are doing. The above rules of thumb are a guideline for inexperienced drivers. If the river or creek is crocodile free it never hurts to wade across first and check for bottomless holes, submerged logs etc. (Don't wade into the Pentecost, ok? Yoùll end up as croc dinner). So how do you actually drive across a deep crossing? Engage the four wheel drive for additional traction, select first or second gear in low range (don't change gears in the water!), and let the car slowly make its way across. Don't feel you have to take a run up and go fast to make it. Ìve seen people do that and you are really asking for trouble if doing that. Fuel/Supplies: Plan ahead what you want to do. Find out where exactly along the Gibb River Road you can refill your tank. You might need jerry cans. Diesel is available at many points, but anything else could be bit harder to come by. Several stores, stations and roadhouses along the way sell basic supplies and ice. The page with the Gibb River Rd Route Description has more details. Drinking water is available at a few points, too. But you should still take plenty, especially if you plan to do a bit more exploring. Drinking water is the one thing you can never carry too much of. You should always have enough to last you for at least two to three days, just in case. And just in case you missed that point: the single most effective thing you can do to avoid any kind of trouble along the Gibb River Road is to take it easy. Slow down, enjoy, and you and your car will arrive in one piece. Kimberley Climate and Temperatures September/October - The last of the dry season It's warming up and the tourists are fleeing northern Australia already. Ok, not really, but the drop in numbers is noticeable. As long as you can handle the warmer weather this is still a good time to visit the Kimberley. Roads are still open, in October you might get the odd shower, but no substantial rains yet. The humidity is going up slightly, but not that much. It's mostly the temperatures that increase. Kimberley climate: temperatures in September/October Daily Average Max: 37°C/98F Nightly Average Min: 21°C/70F What the Kimberley climate means for you: If you plan to do walks or other physical activities schedule them for the mornings and evenings, it does get hot during the middle of the day. The temperature at 9 am is about 5 degrees below the average daily maximum, after 10 am it's high time to look for a swimming spot... The sun rises before 5am, so there is lots of time to do things... However, the evenings provide relief, they are actually very pleasant, and insect numbers are still low. No hint of a wet season yet... If yoùre camping you can leave the warm sleeping bag in the car, a sheet or thin blanket will do. In October it pays to look at the weather forecast before venturing too far into uncharted wilderness... Or just to find out if you need to put up the tent... Why we love this time of the year: Tourists are like the rains, we love them when they arrive, and 6 months later it's good to get a break... For many people it will be the first time in months that they get a day off. It's also nice to drive to the post office or supermarket and be able to park the car near the door, just like that. The swimming holes and fishing spots are not so crowded any more (keep in mind that we will probably consider two other cars a crowd...), and we have time for swimming and fishing again. As far as the heat goes, we just ignore it. You can do the same. Beautiful lookout over the Cockburn Ranges and the Pentecost River, not to be missed. Home Valley Station. Accommodation, camping and tours. Very friendly place with an excellent chef! Pentecost River Crossing. Like the Durack River this is one of the rivers that can be rather exciting to cross early in the season. Beware, this is serious crocodile country. El Questro Station turn-off. Huge and rather expensive tourism operation aimed at the high end market. General store, diesel, unleaded, accommodation, steakhouse, bar... Camping is available, at a price... Emma Gorge turn-off. Belongs to El Questro. Used to be lush, green and shady, but has been severely damaged during the 2006 wet season. Nota di un tour che fa il percorso inverso: We make an early morning visit to Zebedee Hot Springs (easy walk) bring bathers as you can bath in the hot pools. Afterwards, we head southwest via the Pentecost Ranges and river crossing for our overnight stay at Mount Elizabeth Station (cattle station/ farm). N° 1172395222 e n° 1172394827) The resort is situated at the corner of Giles Street & Cameron Street. Km percorsi: 512 Sabato 15 settembre (Katherine - Cooinda) Dopo la colazione ci si reca, attraverso la Jatbula Road (30 Km) all’imbarcadero del NITMILUK CENTER per una crociera di due ore a NITMILUK GORGE, più noto come KATHERINE GORGE (imbarco ore 9.00, tour NGNG107312 voucher 34073) Please make your way to boat landing adjacent to Nitmiluk Centre 20 minutes prior to the departure time of your Nitmiluk Gorge Cruise. Please present your travel voucher to the representative who will guide you to the boat ramp for your cruise. Dovrebbero esser circa le 13.00 24 25 Jim Jim Fall The day's itinerary looked good. Our plan was to take in the most spectacular waterfalls in Kakadu - Twin Falls and Jim Jim Falls. Unfortunately it would take us a significant part of the day to reach both sets of falls, which are located about 10km from each other at the end of a rough 4-wheel drive track. It took us two hours to cover the 60km to Twin Falls from the highway, much of which was spent crawling along a single-vehicle track that had more turns than a spool of yarn and bigger craters than an atom bomb test site. We were introduced to a new frequency and intensity of jarring and lurching. The track was barely wide enough for our bus and more than once I swore we were going to pitch into a tree, but we always seemed to just graze their branches. Passing by another vehicle required much forethought and a well-timed detour off the track into the trees. Some of the turns looked like a particularly devious or drunken road builder had put them there for fun, but on further thought I concluded that there could have been no such road builder, for there certainly wasn't anything worth calling a road. We crossed through a creek where the water sloshed under the cabin door and onto the lower step. We ascended slowly up the far bank. Losing momentum, we hung motionless for a brief instant while the strained clutch considered our fate. We made it to the top, but only just. Eventually we reached a clearing at the end of the track where half-a-dozen battered LandCruisers and other 4-wheel drives baked in the midmorning sun. Justine parked in the best available shade underneath some trees to try and keep the bus cool, but it was pointless - as soon as the overworked air-conditioning shut off, it became an oven inside. We prepared to cover the final kilometre or so to the falls, which would require both walking and swimming - there was no way to reach their base except by water. I scurried along the exposed path to the river's edge, firmly convinced that the hole in the ozone layer was directly above Kakadu and that the sun was falling through it. The crystal clear river emerged from between the towering black walls of a monsoon-forested gorge, gliding quietly and self-assuredly past us. A sign nearby warned us against the small possibility of saltwater crocodiles in the river, despite netting downstream and thorough, regular checks upstream by park management. Swimming was at our own risk. It was not a sign to be taken lightly, but Justine rattled off some statistics about the number of people that safely visit Twin Falls every year and I figured that I had a greater chance of getting hit by a bus (no, not in the river). The retired couple in our group predictably chose to stay behind. I pulled the elastic strap of my waterproof camera onto my wrist, coated myself with another layer of waterproof sunscreen, and jumped into the water. Resurfacing, I counted my limbs - one, two, three, four - all there, no crocs about yet anyway. Out in the middle of the river, I could see up through the gorge, and in the distance, the twin towers of cascading water that marked our destination. The relaxed swim upriver was just short of a kilometre and was absolutely delightful. Cool water, warm sunshine, a remote adventure in a magnificent gorge, the entire afternoon before us and the sense of freedom gained by leaving all of my tourist paraphernalia behind - no backpack, no map, no sunglasses, no wallet, no guidebook, not even my beloved sandals - it felt great. The unclouded water revealed a contoured underwater landscape of smoothed rocks when I paused and let the ripples around me subside. Being able to see the rocks led me into a false sense of security, and I stubbed my toes on several of the more prominent boulders while my brain argued with my eyes about how much the water refracted what I was seeing. There were fish in the water too, although they were far too wary of my size and too ashamed at my lack of aquatic grace to come anywhere near me. We had to climb out of the river, onto a beach and over some rocks halfway through the ascent upriver, but the body of water on the far side opened into a plunge pool that reached up to the base of the double falls. Reaching the falls was worth every step and every stroke. Plunging about 30 metres, the whitewater splashed and bounced its way down the gleaming wall into the pool as two separate channels. The pool itself was enclosed by equally high rock walls except for the cleft through which we had entered. Its undulating floor of fine sand reached up to form a golden beach alongside the falls, where I lounged for the brief period when I wasn't playing in the water. I swam to the base of the waterfall channel that plunged into a deep pool (the other channel dropped into water shallow enough to wade in) and backed up until I was directly underneath the cascading water. It was exhilarating - the king of all power showers. Its thundering roar assaulted my ears, and I could feel nothing except the tremendous pressure of the water as it pounded on my head and my back, trying to force me down and away to the relative calm of the surrounding pool. Trying to tread water, I felt like I was advancing head first into the jet of a firehose. There were alcoves in the rock curtained off by cascading water that demanded exploration, and shallow sandbars in the plunge pool that cradled me in sun drenched water. I had a water fight with Denise and tried my hand at bodyboard surfing from the beach. Despite the humiliation suffered during both of these activities, I enjoyed them immensely. We stayed at the falls for over an hour, but it seemed like ten minutes. When I was called to go, I hung back to gaze in awe at the beautiful gorge and only reluctantly began the swim downriver. Back at the baked bus, we ate another insect-accompanied meal in the relentless sunshine - I had to double-check when making my sandwich that there were no insects trapped between my ham and cheese slices, and that the mayonnaise hadn't become a graveyard for drowned bugs. Having seen too many Saturday morning cartoons in my youth, I half expected our picnic to be carried away by an army of ants marching to the beat of an eager drummer, but thankfully the tomatoes, cucumbers and other foodstuffs stayed right where we put them. We backtracked towards Jim Jim Falls, which at 215 metres high, makes Twin Falls look like a gentle cascade. Well it would do, if there happened to be any water coming over the falls. It was well into the dry season and Jim Jim had dried up. A short hike along a rocky forested trail ended at the edge of a large and dark pool from where we could make out where Jim Jim should have been - a series of long black streaks painting the cliff wall on the far side of the crocodile-patrolled water. I had known the falls would be dry, but it came as a disappointment anyway. We were not one of the lucky few who get to see Jim Jim Falls during the six brief weeks in the year at the beginning of the dry season when they are both accessible and flowing. Most tour companies fail to mention this hiccup to prospective customers in their brochures. An honest mistake Ìm sure. I dozed intermittently on our rolling jaunt back towards Yellow Waters. The sinking sun warmed the rocky Arnhemland Escarpment which jutted out of the forest on our right, marking the boundary of the Aboriginal-owned wilderness after which it is named. Arnhemland is enormous, comprising the eastern half of the Top End of Australia, although it is home to only a few thousand Aborigines. They prefer to be left alone, and industries such as mining, forestry, and tourism have been controlled to ensure their privacy. Access into Arnhemland is virtually impossible for tourists travelling independently. Even when travelling on restricted tours, permits are limited and very expensive. Arnhemland is the Bel-Air of Australia. For dinner I ate enough stirfry chicken and rice to feed an army, and afterwards regretted it. Feeling heavy and sleepy, I couldn't stay in the stuffy kitchen tent, so I headed up to the terrace of the resort pub for a beer with my fellow travellers. Our Dutch companions were already there, swigging heavily from their Heineken substitutes, but I didn't last long. At least I managed to stay up later than the retired Australian couple with whom we were sharing a cabin tent - if I had faded before them I would have been seriously concerned about my stamina. My worries about such things though, were quickly superseded by feelings of vulnerability as I lay on top of my sleeping bag in just a pair of shorts, an open banquet to any 26 mosquitoes who had managed to penetrate our bug nets. As Arnie Schwarzenegger used put it when challenging the baddies: "Come and get me!". Detours: Km 154 (94) Domenica 16 settembre (Cooinda - Jabiru) Sveglia molto presto e partenza per la visita di due ore a YELLOW WATERS BILLABONG (imbarco ore 06.45, tour NGNG107312 voucher 34257) Please make your way to reception at the Gagudju Lodge Cooinda 20 minutes prior to the departure time of your Yellow Waters Cruise. Please present your travel voucher to the reresentative who will guide you to the boat ramp for your cruise. Occorre essere all’imbarcadero per le ore 14.45 (imbarco ore 15.00; tour NGNG107312 voucher 34074) Please make your way to Adventure Cruises boat ramp 15 minutes prior to the departure time of your Jumping Crocodile Cruise. These classic schooners, handled by small crews, formed the hub of the trading industry and the basis for a thousand books written on small sailing ships. Launched in 1994, Windjammer is considered to be one of the most beautiful yachts ever to be built in Australia. She epitomises the grandest of schooner qualities, sailing at speeds of 10 knots or more on the beam and broad reaches. With her 2000 ft of sail area and raked masts she is certainly a spectacular sight. Whilst built in the best traditions of her class offering sailing as it was in yesteryear, that is where Windjammer's resemblance to her predecessors ends. Below decks she is luxuriously appointed displaying a timeless elegance. New Guinea rosewood adorns the interior with fittings reminiscent of a bygone era. Windjammer is a classic example of elegant lines and fine craftsmanship.
