Separated from her young son, Helly struggles for money. She meets Didier, who pays her to play his fiancée for the night, but the act comes to a tragic ending. Left stunned, Helly meets Marie, who takes her on her way to the coast. There they encounter Chris, and all three will end the night together. DIRECTOR’S NOTES 24_meas_DV_ANG-IT_OK 3/08/07 18:57 Page 4 THE BASIS OF THE SCREENPLAY This film is about four lonely individuals and the people they meet as they wander one Christmas Eve. Through them, I have tried to examine how we relate to the notion of “verticality.” By “verticality” I mean the rapport we have with our fathers, our mothers, our children, and, finally, God. The idea for the film grew out of this query. Four people have nothing in common but their paths cross – they are characters who seem to be led like puppets on a string. But who is pulling these strings? They each have the feeling they are alone and abandoned, but they’re not. On the contrary, they have a same need of others to fulfill themselves. Together they break out of their nocturnal urban loneliness to find release from their fate. It was essential that the screenplay, though sad and moving, still be funny and stirring. The incidents overlap in a constant movement that must be maintained without immobilizing the individuals or situations they encounter. The film does not delve into the characters’ psychology. They appear and disappear very suddenly, as in real life. There is nothing intellectual about them, nothing betrays their thoughts. The meaning of their actions should be taken at face value. 24_meas_DV_ANG-IT_OK 3/08/07 18:57 Page 6 THE TREATMENT Because we accompany these people through four separate stories, the treatment had to be classical so as to avoid a trendy or “patchwork” feeling. The problem was to synchronize the lives of these people as part of one single film. But within this classical framework, I sought to preserve a certain sense of spontaneity and surprise. The settings and lighting as well as the performances also had to remain as wide-ranging and chaotic as life itself. In addition, the music, jazz in particular, pulls these different stories together. The group brought together in the film will also compose the original soundtrack. A single theme but with multiple variations will punctuate the action until we hear it played on stage. As in any film, the greatest challenge is to bring the characters to life. Thus, the camera (when it is not the characters) must always keep moving. The playing areas must be expanded as much as possible by using sequence shots. As for the continuity, the cuts must come at the very last moment when all other alternatives have been ruled out. The camera will frequently be held on tracks, by a dolly or crane, or be hand-held. But generally speaking, the framing and continu- ity will remain very restrained, elegant and simple. Three-quarters of the story takes place at night. The lighting will often be low with a high-contrast image, which will lend the characters added density, a sense of mystery and the feeling that they are traveling between two worlds, to a place where things still seem possible but where in fact it is already too late. The use of long focal lens to isolate the main characters will bring us closer to them. The farther they seem from the world around them and the greater the focus on them, the more authentic, palpable and touching they will appear to us. A dynamic pace and rhythm must be preserved. The camera will follow the characters closely as they come alive and are constantly on the move, to keep the ambience consistent with the film’s theme: What is this perpetual movement we are all caught up in? 24_meas_DV_ANG-IT_OK 3/08/07 18:57 Page 7 LA REGLA Per seguire questi personaggi e poiché attraversiamo insieme a loro quattro storie diverse, la messinscena doveva essere classica per evitare l'aspetto alla moda o « patchwork ».
