However, when this virtuosity is so graciously proffered as by this young Italian, then we are willing to listen for hours on end – in short, for years no virtuoso has given me such intimate joy and pleasurable moments as Antonio Bazzini. My opinion is that he is known too little and, even here, not appreciated the way he deserves…He is Italian in everything, in the best sense: he seems to come not from a country of this earth but from a country of the world of singing, from unknown regions, eternally serene: this is what I feel when I listen to his music”. Thus wrote Robert Schumann on the Neue Zetschrift für Musik, reviewing a concert given by Antonio Bazzini in Leipzig in 1843, when the Italian violinist performed a Concerto of his own writing (probably the Concertino Op.14 which was composed in that same year). Coming from someone like Schumann, who was notoriously hostile towards Italian music and had an open dislike of the virtuosos in vogue, this review is quite remarkable. It shows the element of novelty introduced by Bazzini, who was then only twenty-five but, for two years, had already carried out a successful career as an itinerant virtuoso. That career would take him to the most important music centres of Italy and Germany, as well as to France, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, France again (where Bazzini lived from 1852 to 1863) and, finally, to the Netherlands. Despite his young age, in 1843 Bazzini had many qualities that could entice Northern-European audiences. He was an excellent chamber musician, had a good knowledge of Austro-German music and, as an interpreter, he shunned the histrionics typical of virtuosos who emulated – without much imagination – Paganini. His style, sober and technically flawless, could be extraordinarily beautiful in the expressive passages and precise and even in the difficult ones. As a composer he would produce his best output after his definitive return to Italy in 1864; but even before, he entertained European audiences with very effective pieces, such as the famous Ronde des Lutins - published in 1852 but composed several years earlier -, which soon all the major violinists of the day included in their repertoire, and other, less extrovert, chamber works, where his many international experiences seem to flow quite naturally into a strikingly original style. Although Bazzini’s creative results were not always homogeneous, his works are an important link between the Italian instrumental tradition, which by the middle of the 19th century was 6 already in decline, and authors such as Martucci and Sgambati, definitely influenced by the models of the German Romanticism. The present CD features a series of compositions for violin and piano written and published after Bazzini’s return to Italy, all dating from 1865/67. The most important piece is certainly the Sonata in E minor Op.55, composed in 1867. Structured in the customary three movements, this sonata was defined by Sergio Martinotti, in his important Ottocento strumentale italiano, “a work worthy of the highest European Romantic repertoire”. The passion, peaks of heroism and lyrical introspection of the first movement, Allegro deciso, betray Schumann’s influence; more surprising yet is the central movement, Andantino con moto, where the melody flows out with an intimate and tranquil expressiveness that has nothing of the vocal qualities of operatic inspiration. The capricious and exuberant Finale, Vivace, instead, is definitely a morceau de bravoure for the violinist, reminiscent of Mendelssohn’s frolicsome Scherzos and Finales. The two pieces that follow, reunited in a collection that bears the very Schumann-like title of Novellette Op.54, also date from 1867, and have individual French titles of literary or descriptive inspiration. Conte de Grand Mère is rhapsodic and imaginative, with frequent playful episodes; La Nymphe des Bois is a scherzo showing all the traits of a salon piece. The 3 Morceaux Op.53 (1867) and the 3 Morceaux Op.46 (1865), whose musical substance is sometimes sketchy and unoriginal, were inspired more by French salon music than by Schumann. Sotto i salici has the nature of a sad meditation, while Pourquoi? is perhaps the work, among the ones here recorded, that is more “French” in character and harmonic writing. Mignonne, finally, is a delightful short piece full of winks and irony. The first composition of Op.46 – which is generally weaker than Op.53 –, Une matinée au lido (Allegretto con moto), is a sketch with popular accents which seems to anticipate – although without much originality – certain works by Sarasate. Séparation (Andante appassionato) is marked by extrovert lyricism, while Inquiétude, by far the best of the three pieces, is a tranquil and expressive composition, in which the unease forewarned by the title never seems to take shape. 7 BAZZINI: WORKS FOR VIOLIN AND PIANO Danilo Prefumo Translated by Daniela Pilarz “ F or some time now audiences have begun to show their boredom of virtuosos…That the virtuosos themselves perceive it, seems to be proven by their recent desire to emigrate to America; and many of their opponents nurse the secret wish that they may - by all means - remain forever over there; because, all things considered, their new virtuosity has given a negligible contribution to the good of art.
