C'e" pero' Gesu" ehe Dear friends, Lent is about preparing for Easter, when we celebrate the triumph of life over death, the triumph of God over sin, and the reality of Christ's risen life in us. We can prepare by taking stock of where we are spiritually, emotionally and mentally. It is time to think about the God who loves us and longs to have a meaningful relationship with us; longs to be involved in every aspect of our lives. It is a time to allow him to get elose to us, to show us the parts of our lives that could do with a little rc-ordering. It is a time to let Him toueh us where we aehe in pain - whether it is pain ,from long ago or pain from today. It is also a time to give expression to our own thoughts and fcelings about God. We may lament the inadequacy of our love and commitment to him, but 4 we must not let ihat stop us drawing nc.1r to him. God will mcet us where we are, becausc the relationship we have with him is two way and he does not expect us to battle on our own to keep it going. These meditations are designed to help you to rediseover your relationship with the God who loves you. 1. How import.1nt to you is your relationship with God? 2. What things in your life are you eonseious that you need to put right? 3. When you think about appro.1ehing Jesus, what is the first thing that eomes into your mind? His Ive for you? Your sin? FC.1r? 4. What prevents you from receiving things or love from others? Is there a sense in whieh you are rejecting real relationships with them? 5. Think of occ.1sions' when you have let down people you love. How did you feel? Imagine Jesus looking at you in sorrow, but ready to forgive you if you ask him. 6. What things of bc.1Uty or worth do you have or want? Do they bring you e10ser to God, or do they get in the way? 7. Is your faith a very personal, private affair, or is'it something you arc glad to have and like to tell people about? Do you regard it more like a hobby, or is it a way of life for you? RIVlSI'A DELLA COMUNITA'ITALIANA Young Criminals Sir John Smith In this third in a series of extracts taken from a recent speech entitled "Young Criminals" Sir John now examines the origins of delinquent behaviour and criminality. The Background to CriminaIity To attempt to prevent such appall-. ing deeds occurring, we must learn to recognise those elements in a child's history and early family' experience that ean predispose that child to criminal behaviour and violence. Childcare experts might have been less stunned than many of us to hear the seemingly incomprehensible ae-· tions of those two boys in Liverpool and Yummy Sandifer in Chicago had they been aware of the common factors in their backgrounds beforehand. We must acknowledge that violent abuse, poor parenting and deprivation during childhood and adolescence can create the potential for serious criminal activity at a very young age. This fearful thought and events like the callous murders I have described should urge us to take action. The authorities in Chicago had known of Yummy Sandifcr for' years. He had committed a crime a month during the year and a half leading to his dc.,th. Cook County public guardian Patrick Murphy was quoted aOer Yummy's dc.,th as saying: "If cver there was a case where the kid's future was predictable, it was this ease". Sandifer's mother was a tccnage drug addict who had the first of her eight children at IS. His father was in prison for most of Yummy's life and is currently serving scntences for drugs and weapons convictions. Not yet 30, Yummy's mother has faced several charges of child neglect - the first for fhiling to get an eye infection in her older son trc.,ted which eventually resulted in blindness. She has alrc.,dy been arrested 41 times, mainly for prostitution. Yummy's life was a catalogue of abuse and deprivation. He was burned and bc.,ten as a baby and had an erratic and unsuccessful time at 8 sehool - missing more days than they attended. He spent his childhood in a variety of homes and detention centres and finally safe houses kept by his gang, the Black Diseiples. As a small boy his mother was pronounced unfit to care for him so he was sent to live with his grandmother, herself described"as having a "severe borderline personality disorder". Just onc year ago, a psychiatrist evaluated Yummy as '''emotionally flooded"; he saw a child full of self-hate, lonely, illiterate and wary. Some who knew him saw belter in him. A neighbour said he could be polite, kind, loved animals, basketball and messing around with bikes and cars - like any other kid. Others described him as a bully,. extortionist and a fierce fighter prepared to take on bigger children. The family histories of the boys who killed Jamie Bulger, according to reports, bc.,r many similarities. The were also violent, disordered and chaotic. Both boys were brought up in fhtherlcss homes. In onc case the boy was bc.,ten by both his elder brothers and his father, until his father leO. Onc had an alcoholic' mother and onc a mother who felt so unable to cope on her own in diseiplining her son that she would take him to the local police to do it for her. One of the boys had one sibling in care and another who had asked for the same treatment. Both boys spent more time truanting from sehool than going. These common background factors - disordered and emotionally inadequate family lives, educational failure, emotional .and physical abuse, truanting; petty crime and violence arc not by any means excuses for the appalling crimes commilted by all these boys. But they do provide an insight, an explanation perhaps, of their behaviour. It is my strong belief that it is only by gaining such an insight that wc can start to address ourselves to the question of preventing such behaviour. A child psychologist was quoted in a newspaper as saying that he is now sceing more violent and disturbed behaviour in children. The problems are different now, he said, involving more desperation and brutality. He stresses the importance of looking at the child's early life - the foundation of his or her existence - and the relationship \vith the parents. Unhappily, good parenting is lacking or inadequate in the early years of a gro\ving number of our children. Emotional stability, a sense of well-being and high selfestcem all depend on the quality of family relationships in childhood. Moral development also rests on these c.,rly experiences. Children learn behaviour by example and from role models. They value themselves according to the value placed on them by the most significant people in their early lives - their parents - and from the interest shown in them. I believe that the origins of delinquent behaviour and criminality can be traced back to these childhood years. Each further stage of a child's development rests on the success or failure of the previous stages. Icvcls declinc. as Marzo 95 19 -b~ ~ . ·RIVISI'A DEU.A COMUNITA'ITALIANA No More War? Wouldn't it be wonderful if there were no more wars and famine. If we lived in peace and harmony With our families, friends and even people that we don't know? Is it possible? I think that the answer is more a positive response than a negative one. So what stops us? The first· thing is trust. We learn from very early on in life to nover trust another person. From this ~eason wc learn to justify our greed, Jealousy and pride. Since wc eannot trust other people, we begin to try to better ourselves at the expense of others. Wc also remain insecure about ourselves and the world around us and so \Jy also to· manipulate the situations that we fiiid ourselves in. This is a very negative way of trying to cope with the problems that wc arc dealing with. This kind of behaviour of "dog eat dog" becomes the only response that we can, give and wc never leave the vicious circle that wc arc in. Perhaps we respond this way because from early on someone did us wrong and we have never been able to put it behind us. There are many possibilities for why wc act the way we do. Again I ask, is it possible to change the situation. I believe that it can be done. So now, let's look at a few ways to deal with the problem. It might not be possible to change the world around you but you eaR change yourself. By becoming more secure in ourselves and realising' that if someone does something wrong to us it is a reflection on that. person and not on us. I must take responsibility for myself and only ,myself. I must also look at the situation that I am in and sce' if I have any fault in it. If I have some culpability in a siluation, I must try to right the wrong as fhr as I am able; It is important to try to be as· objective as possible with regards to oneself. Something else that I can do is to get to know and understand myself as much as possible so that I C<'1n move' more towards my own personal fulfilment. When I know mysclf I am in better control of all of my rC<'1ctions an emotions and will always be able to think more clearly. When I am able to put more perspective into the 20 things of my own life I will then become more able to understand others. This is also an important key to making the situations in life more pleasant. If I understand better why a particular person acts the way he or she does, I will be better able to cope wilh that person. In doing so I have already begun to create a better world around me just by starting with myself. So, as wc now see understanding and compassion are very essential for myself to myself, as well as for myself to'others. Don't wait for an Angel to hit you over the head with a trumpet It is always true that niany of us are not quite at the level of the Saints in dealing wilh others. 'But if wc rc.'1l1y look at their lives wc will find that they did help ·to crc.'1te a better world' around them. Even in all of their adversities and trials they always responded good for evil. Shouldn't we 'try also to do the same? Wc also have to remember that even the most evil person will respect the concept of good. I know 'no onc rc.'1I1Y wants to be' labelled as a "bad person". This is also a good sign and gives sonic hope to ihe situation. In Ameriea I remember the story of Fr. F1anagan who founded the first "Boystown" in the midwestern states. Flanagan &'1id that lIiere was no such thing as a bad boy and we!lt ?bout Michael Scotto SAC proving his statement. He had a tremendous success and "Boystown" has grown and even flourished up to this very day. He was someone who responded with good to every situation and changed the lives of thousands of problem children. In my book the man is a saint; his example gives me 'the inspiration to do the same. I think at this point wc can also say that it is part of our vocation as Christians to try to be in peace and harmony here on carth. Wc must all aspire to be Saints and endure even the most difficult of situations with patience, tranquillity and love. Believe mc, I know how difficult it is to treat people with kindness and love especially if all they want to do is butt you. I fcel that at times like these it becomes a grcat challenge to my own self. I try to look at the situation in the most positive way possible and I leave all to God by asking His help to make a truly Christian response to every siluation that I may find myself in. I know that God will nover abandon anyone who calls upon His name Wilh sincerity and goodness. Also if you. ever feel alone in your situation, never forget that God is always wilh you. St. Paul says "If God is for us, who can be against us", Or, in the Psalms il states, "Yaweh, I know that you arc near, standing always at my side. You guard me from the focand you lead ,me in ways everlasting". ' In my love I also become more disposed to charity. I will actually begin to really help others and actually be concerned for their well being, Just imagine that, if I started trying to change the world, eventually someone else might follow my example... and another... and another and another... So you see thal il is possible to imagine the world without wars and famine - for our families, friends and even people wc don't know - to live in peace and harmony. The question which is now being asked is whcther the European Championships should be hcld in this country in 1996. My. immediate reply is "yes'" and that"is not just because I have already applicd for my tickets. Thcre arc a number of reasons why I feel strongly on this point. The dis.,sters in Brussels, at Hillsborough, and the appalling behaviour of England fans in Luxembourg and Holland ultinmtcly led to the exclusion of English clubs from foreign competition. It was a blow which hit .hard and many clubs and supporters suffered as a result. If the purpose of the exclusion was to act as a deterrent and prevent a repetition of such events, it has s.,dly not worked. The reason is that this is not rc.,lly a footballing problem. It is a social problem and not just restricted to these shores. The most recent press reports make it clear that thcre was an organised campaign aimed at embarrassing the British Govcrnmcnt iil its pc.,ce negotiations with Ireland. What possible rclevance c.,n chants of "no surrendcr to the IRA" have to a football match? Everyone is agreed that the crowd behaviour wils totally unrelated to anything which happened on the pitch even though Kelly had just scored to put the home tc.,m I - 0 up. The British police had actually predicted that there would be trouble when the Natioual Anthcms were sung. In Germany, the frighteuing rise of neo-naziism has manifested itself in many forms not Ic.,st through football hooliganism. Let us not forget that the match between Germany and 32 Richard Evans England fixed for last year was cancelled because it coincided with Hitler's birthday. Wc all aecepted the decision at the time but take a step back - what an astonishing reason for not playing a football matchI In Holland, the supporters arc rapidly gaining a reputation to match the English and sadly, even in Italy it' is developing into a major problcm Howevcr, I belicvc t1mt thc police's vast expericnce will overcomc any major difficulties. So the European Championship should go ahead in England. Meanwhile, ,on a happier note, I was proud and privileged to attend a lunch at thc' Grosvenor House Hotel last Monday to mark the 80th birthday of Sir Stanlcy Mallhcws. The other speakers were Tom Finney" Nat Lofthouse and Jaekic B1anchllowcr. I evcn mamiged to get my mcnu signed by all four of thcm and I am making no pretcnce that thc autographswerc for thc bencfitof my son. They are ·for iuc. . Listening to thcm spc.,k and wal100ving in thcir nostalgia brought homc to mc how football has changed. Thcre have always been hard men and rough tacklcs. I rcmember going to a gamc in 1965 between Arscnal and Liverpool in thc fifth round of thc FA Cup whcn Ron Ye.,ts and Joc Bakcr wcre both sent off. This was thc first timc I had ever secn such an ineidcnt on a football pitch. Nowadays, my tcn yc.,r old son will Moro WOes for Graham Kellyafld the scc somcbody sent off almost evcry Football Associatio1l weck. Is the gamc Iha! much more vicious and dirty? Of eoursc, it is not. To vicw this narrowly as a foot- I have touched upon this subjcet in balling problem is only ever to past issucs. Wc arc, expcrienCing, scratch the surface and ncver allack officialdom gonc mad. Yes, it is the root of the problem. This is a necess.,ry to outlaw malcvolcnce and worldwidc social disease which mani- perhaps not enough has been done in fests itself particularly among speeta- thc past to achieve that cnd. I am in lors at football matehcs. What is' no doubt, howcver" that the directives worse - the disc.,se is sprc.,ding. Onc givcn to our rcfcrecs this sc.,son have of my partncrs has just returned from gonc too far. Supportcrs go to a game following the cricket Down Under to sce the star playcrs perform. They and was appalled by the behaviour of have been short changed if they cnd what the media nicknamed the up seeing nine men play eleven as in "Barmy Army". These were not the c.,se of Arsenal v- Shcffield cricket followers. These were drunken Wednesday and it is high time that louts engaging in fights outsidc the basic common sense was restored to grounds and in thc eitics thcy visitcd. our national game. The spotlight What will bc gained, thcrefore, by should be on the playcrs- not the stopping thc Europc.,n Championships referees. It has not been a good month. Let from being played in England. Thc only peoplc who will be punished will us hope for a bellcr cnd to the season. P.S. Thc only rc.,son, in my view, for peoplcs noses - thcn maybe the r.,ns preventing thc Championship going would respect them more and watch ahc.,d is if Ihe EngliSh police could football for what it is - a game - and not give a guarantee of crowd s.,fcty. not a fight.
