Testo inglese The Research Unit of the University of Roma Tor Vergata (UNITV) is based on long-lasting cooperation on common research interests and expertise between the Electronic Engineering Department and the INFN Section of Roma Tor Vergata (attachments 2 and 3 paragraph 8). The activity of the UNITV Research Unit will be focused on the study of new electronic technologies for data acquisition and trigger system for the experiment KLEVER (KL Experiment to Detect Very Rare decays). The research activity will be arranged in the following two main topics. DEVELOPMENT OF ALGORITHMS FOR EMBEDDED PROCESSORS ON FPGA The embedded processors for FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays), such as the Nios II processor for FPGA Altera [4], have presented a significant development in recent years thanks to advances in microelectronics. The use of an integrated system where the wired logic and a microprocessor are both implemented on a single FPGA presents a considerable interest in problems in which we are able to split a given algorithm in more parts. So, the most simple of them can be run on hard-wired logic while the more complex parts can be executed on the embedded processor. Therefore, in this research activity, we propose the study of the performance of embedded processors for various tasks and algorithms of interest in high energy physics. In particular, this part of the research program will be conducted in collaboration with the University of Bratislava, which will take care of the programming software as well as the embedded processor. NEW HIGH BANDWIDTH BUS SYSTEMS In future experiments, to the increasing of the intensity of the beams will follow the requirement to perform algorithms of the trigger as well as the readout of detectors with an even wider occupancy. Therefore, this will require more resources and better performances from the hardware system and expecially for the data transmission system. In order to develop a system able to find a suitalbe solution for these requirements, the Research Unit will study and design a system for data acquisition and transmission bus based on ATCA (Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture) [6,7]. The bus ATCA defines a series of electrical and mechanical standards initially designed for the telecommunications industry. At the moment, it presents a great interest also for high energy physics. In order to acquire the necessary experience on the ATCA bus, we propose to develop a simple demonstrator based on two electronic cards with onboard new models of FPGA. These circuits will implement the serializers required for the demonstrator. This simple demonstrator will enable us to acquire the useful skills in terms of new knowledge on the aspects of "system" as the protocol and control software, allowing us, at the same time, to characterize the bus as well as the serializers implemented on the FPGAs. All these studies will be carried out by using the existing instrumentation and the expertises within the research group UNITV [8-11]. The whole software development will be done in cooperation with the team from the University of Bratislava. Testo inglese The high scientific and technological level of the research in this project proposal necessarily requires to take advantage of the contribution and support of other international partners that go well beyond those relating to the project itself. What we present here is part of a much wider international context, consisting in both European and non-European universities, as well as European institutes of excellence at world level with which we are having, for some time now, a fruitful collaboration. The realization of the project will enable Italy to maintain its present position of excellence inside the undisputed leading role of Europe in the context of K physics and particularly in the field of the measurement of their decay branching ratios (BR) to ultra rare channels (whose scientific significance is described in section 11 of the model A) since, both in Japan as in the United States, proposals are under study with the aim to achieve in the coming years experiments in the same research field. The study of ultra rare channels of charged K mesons is currently only performed at CERN in Geneva (Switzerland), by the international collaboration NA62, which includes almost all of the partners related to this project, together with groups of CERN, Belgium, United Kingdom, Slovakia, Romania, Russia, Mexico and the USA. The experience gained in precision measurements in this area is undoubtedly a crucial value for the success of the project, as well as the highest scientific and technological cooperation with specialized working groups in this area. In preparing this project to come up with a proposal for the experiment KLEVER (KL Experiment to detect VEry Rare decays), we therefore involved all the international institutions, European and non-European, qualified to help us in implementing the project, receiving an enthusiastic endorsement from them. In this respect, a key foreign partner who has joined the project is certainly CERN itself, with which we have a more than 20-year history of collaboration. The CERN engineers, who are concerned with the definition and achievement of the extracted beams, will collaborate with us to define the new beam line, required to ensure that the desired measurements may be: KLEVER will indeed need to use an appropriate primary beam of 400 GeV protons, extracted from the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN. This beam will be used to produce a secondary neutral beam, with an intensity that must be at least ten times higher than hitherto never realized for the NA48 experiment. This intensity is needed in order to have a number of KL decays in the fiducial region of the experiment of the order of at least 10^12 per year, in order to reach a meaningful statistics about the observation of ultra rare channels such as KL in neutral pion and a lepton-antilepton pair (charged or neutral). The primary beam must also be optimized to reduce the number of neutrons present in the secondary neutral beam, so that one could place at the end of the experimental setup a detector for gammas from KL decays ("gamma catcher") which will be developed within the project. The primary gammas, however, may be removed by placing appropriate converters and magnets along the beam line in a provision that the aforementioned engineers will study. This is complicated by the need to minimize the spread of neutrons and therefore requires a thorough redesign of the entire system of beams than what had been done, for example, for NA48, estimated still perfectly possible by specialists of CERN who will contribute actively to this phase of definition of the beam. Some of the partners involved in this project, in particular the CERN (but also G. Mason University and JINR who collaborate with the units of Naples and LNF, respectively) will contribute also to the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation of both signal and background events. Only through the most possible realistic simulation we could decide how to eventually modify the apparatus that is our starting point, i.e. NA62, and with the contribution of the foreign colleagues who have joined the project and who have great experience in this field, we will certainly gain time and avoid possible errors. The simulation will allow us to focus and understand both the problems regarding the acceptance of the full detector as well as the effects related for example to photonuclear interactions that affect the veto ability of the used detectors, and to the interaction of neutrons with nuclei of the atoms and molecules of the gas in the vacuum volume. Given the small size of the signal we are looking for, and then the real possibility that it could be swamped by the background related to the effects listed, a large statistics of MC events is needed, for which we will use both local resources and those made available by CERN and the GRID. The latter, as it is known, is a distributed computing infrastructure operating at a planetary level, designed and developed primarily by CERN for the needs of the LHC experiments, and it is one of the most sophisticated and advanced distributed computing solutions currently available. Beyond the purely financial value of this contribution, however estimated in the order of hundreds of thousands of euros, the other aspect that we must certainly emphasize is the one linked to the possibility that is so offered especially to the youth of our collaboration to make an experience in a field whose possibility of application in the industrial and financial world are certainly relevant. Coming to the Horizon 2020, the proposed programme will no doubt be classified as part of basic research, agreeing fully with the objectives outlined in the above-mentioned programme of the European Union, since it will maintain the excellence linked to this type of research in Europe. The very high level of specialization of the science and technology of the project implies the need to maintain viable and productive its research activities both in the Member States as in the European collaborations, as even a small setback could cause in this field an unbridgeable gap towards the Japanese and US competitors, both from the economic point of view and for the skills involved, because both infrastructure and scientific expertise may be subject in this area to a rapid and expensive obsolescence. Investing in this sector means maintaining and strengthening its primacy, both for Italy within Europe and for Europe in the global context. Also, just for the fact that, even within a 'national' project, the Italian network will collaborate closely with foreign institutions and international infrastructures of absolute excellence, this project also responds to the aim of encouraging cooperation between European areas for the frontier research, as outlined in Horizon 2020, and it keeps alive the Italian scientific collaboration relations with international partners in this field of science. Finally a last, not secondary item, still in agreement with the Horizon 2020 goals, is then the technological fallout that this kind of research and development activities usually has: the realization of innovative detectors and electronics, in addition to be extremely useful for future high energy experiments, involves highly specialized companies, making them protagonists of innovations that would otherwise not have the opportunity to develop: a framework of this kind obviously helps, albeit indirectly, to the scientific and technological bases of the `Industrial Leadership' Priority of Horizon 2020. Regarding the research topics in the Research Unit of the University of Rome Tor Vergata (UNITV) was established good cooperation with a team at the University of Bratislava (attachment 1). The researchers at the University of Bratislava have been involved since long time in the experiment NA62. In particular, they have a wide experience both in hardware and software, including the development of software drivers. Moreover, the Bratislava team has the responsibility, within the NA62 collaboration, for the system related to the timing and trigger distribution to the several subdetectors. Therefore, the research team at the University of Bratislava will contribute to both research topics of our Unit. Testo inglese The study of rare Kaon decays (such as K+ -> pi+ nu nubar, KL -> pi0 nu nubar, KL -> pi0 l+ l-) is, at the moment, a very active research area. By its very nature, this kind of research requires very intense beams and suitable detectors as well as data processing systems able to allow you to select a few interesting events from the rest of the decays. The NA62 experiment[1], currently being installed at CERN SPS, aims at measuring the Branching Ratio of the very rare kaon decay K+ -> pi+ nu nubar collecting O(100) events with a 10% background in two years of data taking. In order to estract few interesting signal events from a huge background a complex trigger and data acquisition system has been designed for this experiment[2,3]. The trigger of the NA62 experiment is divided into three levels, an hardware level (L0), which is based on fast information collected on the front-end electronics of the sub-detectors, and two software levels; Level 1 (L1), where for each sub-detector a trigger primitive is generated independently, and Level 2 (L2), where information from all sub-detectors are available and where high level algorithms (similar to the offline reconstruction) will be applied to select the interesting data. For almost all the sub-detectors involved in the L0 trigger, specific algorithms will be developed in the same custom cards (TEL62) that will manage the flow and the acquisition of the data coming from the analog-to-digital converter electronics. All the front-end electronics of the NA62 experiment is synchronized by a common 40 MHz coherent clock, generated centrally by a single free-running high-stability oscillator and distributed optically to all systems through the Timing, Trigger and Control (TTC) system designed and used for LHC experiments. The L0 processors implemented in a custom board equipped with FPGA, will receive and process the trigger primitives, sends via the TTC system a synchronous signal to all front-end boards in order to start the event acquisition and the data transfer to the L1 PCs. The maximum L0 latency is 1 ms, reducing the event rate to about 1 MHz. MIUR - BANDO 2010-2011 - MODELLO B Ministero dell'Istruzione dell'Università e della Ricerca The data from all sub-detectors are sent via Gigabit Ethernet to the L1 PCs. Each sub-detector will have a dedicated PC in the L1 farm which will verify the data quality and will apply selection criteria based only on the information of the specific sub-detector. The L1 processor (that will collect L1 primitives from all the PCs of the L1 farms) will decide whether to transmit the event information to the L2 farm. At this stage for each event all the data from all the detectors will be available in a single L2 PC, having the possibility to apply complex selection criteria by correlating information from different sub-detectors and applying a complete event reconstruction. The L2 stage can use all the time between two consecutive spills to process the data incoming from the L1. At the nominal intensity of the NA62 beam, the rate of events on the detector is of the order of 10 MHz. The first trigger level (L0) will provide a reduction of at least a factor 10. A further factor 10 will be applied from the L1, as well as from L2, obtaining a final rate of the order of few tens of kHz. 11 - Riferimenti bibliografici [1] The NA62 Collaboration, SALAMON A., et al. Lo studio dei decadimenti KL -> pi0 nu nubar e KL -> pi0 l+ l-, alla base della proposta KLEVER (KL Experiment to detect VEry Rare decays), richiederà quindi l'utilizzo delle più recenti tecnologie elettroniche. As a consequence, the design of the detectors as well as the trigger and the associated data acquisition systems has to meet very strong constraints. The study of the decay KL -> pi0 nu Nubar and KL -> pi0 l + l-, for the proposal KLEVER (KL Experiment to Detect Very Rare decays), then requires the use of the latest electronic technology. On this purpose, the research unit of the University of Rome Tor Vergata (UNITV) will focus on the study of new electronic technologies for data acquisition and trigger system for the experiment KLEVER. In particular, the proposed research activity will be focused on two main topics. The first of them will be the use of embedded processors on FPGA for algorithms development, while the second one will concerns the study of new buses with high bandwidth and high connectivity. DEVELOPMENT OF ALGORITHMS FOR EMBEDDED PROCESSORS ON FPGA The development of embedded processors for FPGAs (such as the Nios II processor for FPGA Altera [4]) has increased significantly in recent years thanks to the improvements in microelectronics. The use of an integrated system with wired logic together with a microprocessor both implemented on a single FPGA presents a high interest in the solution of several problems. In particular, this kind of architecture results particularly suitable when it is possible to split a given algorithm in a "simple" section to be implemented on the hard-wired logic and other "more complex" section that can be executed on the embedded processor. Among the others, these systems could be used for the data compression algorithms [5], reconstruction of electromagnetic clusters in the calorimeters, monitoring and on-line calibration of detectors. This part of the research program will be developed in cooperation with the University of Bratislava, which will deal with the software programming of embedded processor. NEW HIGH BANDWIDTH BUS SYSTEMS In the future experiments, to the increasing of the intensity of the beams will follow the requirement to perform algorithms of the trigger as well as the readout of detectors with an even wider occupancy. Therefore, this will require more resources and better performances from the hardware system and expecially for the data transmission system. In order to develop a system able to find a suitable solution for these requirements, UNITV will study and design a new system for data acquisition and transmission based on the ATCA (Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture) bus [6,7]. The ATCA bus specifications consists of a list of electrical and mechanical standards initially designed for the telecommunications industry. At the moment, due to the high bandwidth as well as the high interconnectivity standards ATCA seems to be really appealing in the applications of the trigger and data acquisition for high energy physics. In particular, the standard ATCA provides wide boards (blades) (sized 280mm x 322mm) which, inserted in an appropriate crate (shelf), are connected together by a backplane at high interconnectivity. The backplane presents three different connectors, the first one (zone-1) for power distribution and control of both shelf and blade. The second one (Zone-2) is used for high bandwidth connections among the different blades as well as among the blades and the external circuits. The last one (Zone-3) has been designed for the signals defined by the user and for the insertion on the back of the shelf of cards (Rear Transition Module). The connection among the blades in a shelf is currently guaranteed by switches up to 10 Gbps. At moment are being studied extensions with switches up to 40 Gbps. These features make the standard ATCA extremely suitable for future experiments. Many experimental groups (among the others some groups involved in the LHC experiments at CERN) are already developing the first prototypes of ATCA boards. In order to gain the necessary skills on the bus ATCA, the UNITV proposes to develop a simple demonstrator based on two blades only. The developed blades will present onboard high performance FPGA modules that will implement the serializers circuits. This simple demonstrator will enable us to acquire the skills on the system as well as the protocols and control software. Moreover, it will allow to characterize the bus itself and the serializers implemented on the FPGAs. The serial links will be studied and characterized with particular reference to the latency, jitter, the BER (Bit Error Rate) and the other operating parameters. Another topic of interest is the study of the distribution of a single synchronization clock among the several boards within the same ATCA shelf and the transmission fixed latency between two blades. Moreover, the demonstrator will be also used to test the algorithms for embedded processors on FPGA described in the above topic. All these studies will be addressed using skills and equipment (including a sampling oscilloscope with a reflectometer, module clock data recovery, low jitter clock generators) acquired in previous research project by various members of the group [8-11]. The whole software development will be carried out in cooperation with the team from the University of Bratislava. Indeed, they are, at moment, responsible research group for the developing of the software and the hardware related to the timing and trigger distribution system of the NA62 experiment at CERN SPS. Pubblicazioni su rivista e presentazioni a conferenze Ho pubblicato circa 100 articoli su riviste internazionali e presentato i risultati delle mie ricerche a varie conferenze internazionali. Publications in journals and conference presentations I have published about 100 articles in international journals and presented the results of my research at various international conferences. My h-index (inspire, March 4, 2012) is 26. Brief summary of scientific activities Past activities Study of neural networks for unsupervised learning with stochastic attractors (from 1996 to 2000) During my degree thesis I worked on the construction and testing of neurons, synapses, and a full network of integrated neurons. All circuits were manufactured in CMOS technology VLSI full-custom analog 1.2 u. In order to reduce power consumption many circuits were implemented using the MOS in the sub-threshold region, where conduction is dominated by diffusion. AGILE experiment for the study of Gamma Ray Bursts in the energy band 30 MeV - 50 GeV (in 2000) As member of the AGILE project I worked on the development of the Data Handling system architecture helping to define the requirements and parameters of the trigger and readout systems of the experiment. LHCb (from 2007 to 2010). The LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN is a forward spectrometer dedicated to the study of b physics, CP violation and rare decays. For the readout of the various detectors of the experiment a "general purpose" acquisition board was developed (TELL1), that can be programmed according to different subdetectors needs. Since the beginning of 2007 to 2010 I was responsible for firmware development for the readout of the muon detector. Present activities ATLAS experiment for Higgs boson and new physics beyond the Standard Model searches at the LHC (since 1998) Within the ATLAS collaboration I worked on the RPC trigger chambers and on the first level muon trigger in the barrel. Concerning the muon spectrometer trigger chambers I worked on test, installation and commissioning of all BOL (Large Barrel Out) chambers in collaboration with my Tor Vergata colleagues. Concerning the first level trigger I worked on simulation and implementation of trigger algorithms in the spectrometer logical sectors. I wrote the Monte Carlo and the firmware for programming the trigger logic and readout FPGA. Since January 2009 I'm responsible for off-detector trigger electronics (Sector Logic) of the ATLAS first level muon trigger. Parallel computing and technology research (since 2001) Since 2001, I work in the APENet proejct for the realization of a PC-based parallel computer for lattice QCD. In this project I developed the first prototype PCI card communication link with high bandwidth for data transfer between computing nodes. A cluster of 128 PCs is currently running at INFN Roma Tor Vergata. In collaboration with colleagues from various groups, I also worked on research in the field of data transmission and processing. In collaboration with an accelerator group I developed a reflective memory card for data acquisition and control systems with high speed optical communication links. With colleagues in the APE group I developed and characterized a card with FPGA serializers with embedded links and QSFP + with an aggregate bandwidth of 12 Gbps. Toghether with APE colleagues I studied and developed algorithms for data compression on FPGA and "embedded" processors. NA62 experiment for measuring the ultra-rare decay K + -> pi + nu nubar at CERN SPS (since 2006) I designed and proposed the trigger system for on-line cluster reconstruction in liquid krypton calorimeter. The trigger processor identifies clusters in the calorimeter, sending to the central trigger processor a list of reconstructed cluster associated with time, the position and energy. The main parameters for the definition of the trigger processor are the expected hit rate (30 MHz) and high performance requirements, especially on the time resolution (1.5 ns). The trigger processor is a parallel two-stage (front-end and concentrator) system based on the TEL62 cards (evolution of the TELL1 cards developed for the LHCb) and dedicated mezzanine. In total, the system will be made up of 36 cards TEL62, 108 mezzanines and 215 programmable logic. I also participate in the production, assembly and testing of all 100 TEL62 that will be produced for the experiment. Since May 2007, I'm local manager for the INFN experiment NA62, from April 2008 I'm Member of the Steering Committee of the experiment, and from July 2008 I'm responsible for the level 0 trigger of the liquid krypton calorimeter.
