History
The foundation of the University of Catania, the oldest
in Sicily, dates back to 1434, when the king of Spain,
Alfonso of Aragon (who was also King Alfonso I of Sicily)
authorised the establishment of a Studium Generale with
the privilege of issuing legally valid academic titles in
the four core disciplines of theology, canon and civil
law, physical and joint philosophy, liberal arts.
In 1444, the first four faculties of Medicine, Philosophy, Canonic & Civil Law and Theology & Arts were
established. Students began to attend classes in 1445,
however it was not until two centuries later that the
university gained its own establishment in Piazza
Università. It still stands in the piazza today, in the
former grounds of the hospital of St. Mark’s. The
building was completely destroyed by an earthquake
in 1693 leaving students without a place to study. In
the interim period before it was rebuilt, the resourceful
students, unperturbed by such events and endowed
with infinite determination, transferred classes to
wooden huts near the harbour. The new building,
designed by Giovan Battista Vaccarini, is a magnificent
monument of Baroque architecture.
The University of Catania was not only structurally
powerful. It also held the exclusive right by Royal Decree
to grant degrees within the reign of Sicily.
Although the hierarchical power of the university
was in the hands of the Church, the Rector, an elected
student in his or her last year of studies, had the power
to put students on trial. The start of the academic
year was marked by 25 chimes from the Cathedral
bell. Throughout the year, a porter marked daily any
absences of professors. The figures were then taken
to a notary who subtracted a day’s wages from their
pay. At the end of his studies, a student was awarded
8
contents
his degree in the Cathedral as well as a gold ring and
a blessing from the Archbishop.
Although this ceremony and many other traditions
have fallen into disuse, the academic structure of
the university is still as strong today as it was in the
first half of the 15th century when it started out with
just 10 students.
Today the university buildings are spread throughout
the city, with a contrast between the modern, hi-tech
“University City”, and numerous historical buildings
in the old city centre.
It offers an attractive portfolio of academic titles
and it is engaged in creating a “laboratory” in which
the ancient knowledge of the Mediterranean culture
meets the new technologies in order to offer an
original and advanced training experience.
Prospective students wishing to take an undergraduate
degree will find our university to be a high quality
educational establishment, with degrees specifically
adapted to the employment market and which effectively
prepares the way for further studies. Excellent faculty
members and support services are offered throughout
all of our university sites in Catania, Siracusa and Ragusa.
Here, students can also discover a culturally dynamic
environment in which they can develop both as University
students and as individuals.
Those who are considering taking post graduate,
masters or doctorate studies can choose among a
range of many academic fields, developed by members
of research groups at international level. Students
have the opportunity to commence their university
career alongside the very best.
The University of Catania is also a very attractive
proposition for companies with an interest in the
transfer of technology from the university departments
and research centre.

Introduction
I TALIAN H IGHER E DUCATION S YSTEM
Italian higher education is structured in a binary system,
consisting of 2 main articulations:
UNIVERSITY SECTOR
It includes State universities, non-State universities
(legally recognised by the State), higher schools
specialised in postgraduate university studies and
telematic universities.
State universities are public entities endowed with
scientific, teaching, managerial, financial and bookkeeping autonomy and may draw up their own statutes
and regulations, issued by rectoral decrees.
Since 1999, the Italian university system has been
reformed so as to meet the objectives of the “Bologna
Process” and is now organised in 3 cycles:
– 1st Cycle Studies - Bachelor Degree;
– 2nd Cycle Studies - Master Degree;
– 3rd Cycle Studies - Ph.D. and Specialisation Courses
NON - UNIVERSITY SECTOR
The non-university sector includes 4 education
typologies of institutions:
– Higher Education in Art, Music and Dance (AFAM)
– Higher Education in Language Mediation
– Higher integrated Education (FIS) and programmes
of Higher Technical Education & Training (IFTS)
– Programmes in a few specific fields (e.g. archiving,
diplomatics, restoration, military studies, etc.)

E UROPEAN COMMUNITY COURSE CREDIT TRANSFER
S YSTEM (ECTS)
The University of Catania has adopted the CFU accreditation system which corresponds to the European
Community Course Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
WHAT IS ECTS?
ECTS has been developed by the European Commission
in order to provide common procedures to guarantee
academic recognition of studies abroad. It offers a way
of measuring and comparing learning achievements,
and transferring them from one institution to another.
The ECTS system is based on the principle of mutual
trust and confidence between the participating
higher education institutions. The rules of ECTS,
concerning information on courses available, agreement between the home and host institutions and
the use of credit points to indicate student workload
are set out to reinforce this mutual trust and
confidence.
ECTS CREDITS
ECTS credits are a value allocated to course units to
describe the student workload required to complete
them. They reflect the quantity of work each course
requires in relation to the total quantity of work
required to complete a full year of academic study
at the institution: lectures, practical work, seminars,
private work in the library or at home and examinations
or other assessment activities. ECTS credits express a
relative value.
In ECTS, 60 credits represent the workload of a year of
study and normally 30 credits are given for a semester.
It is up to the participating institutions to subdivide the
credits for the different courses. Practical placements
and optional courses which form an integral part of the
course of study also receive academic credit.
21
contents
Credits are awarded only when the course has been
completed and all required examinations have been
successfully taken.
ECTS GRADING SCALE
The ECTS grading scale provides a common currency
to measure the quality of student achievement.
ECTS

ECTS STUDENTS AND ERASMUS PROGRAMME
The students participating in ECTS receive full credit
for all academic work successfully carried out at any
of the ECTS partner institutions. They will be able to
transfer these academic credits from one participating
institution to another on the basis of prior agreement
on the content of study programmes abroad between
students and the institutions involved.
When the student has successfully completed the
study programme previously agreed between the
22

home and the host institutions and returns to the
home institution, credit transfer will take place, and
the student can continue the study course at the
home institution without any loss of time or credit.
Students may be awarded a student mobility grant if
they fulfil the general conditions of eligibility for
the Erasmus grant. They shall not be required to pay
tuition fees at the host institution and continue to
pay normal tuition fees to the home institution
during the study period abroad.

Introduction
ACADEMIC CALENDAR
The academic year in Italy is made up of 2 semesters.
The 1st semester starts in September-October and ends
in January-February. The 2nd semester starts in February
and ends in July. The actual start and finish dates will
vary in the various departments but each semester lasts
around 20 weeks and is made up of a teaching period
lasting around 14 weeks and an exam period lasting
around 6 weeks.
TEACHING AND LEARNING
Most teaching takes place in large lecture halls and
laboratories; students are also expected to carry out
a considerable amount of self study in order to prepare
for exams.
ASSESSMENT
Exams are held after the teaching period and are
mainly oral although some courses have written tests
taking place during the semester or before the oral
exam. Each exam has a number of dates offered during
the exam session and students can choose which date
they wish to take it. Students are also entitled to turn
down a mark and take the exam again if they are not
satisfied with the result.
GRADING SYSTEMS
Examinations are graded according to a scale ranging
from 0 to 30, with 18 as a pass mark. A “cum laude”
may be added to the highest grade as a mention of
special distinction. All examination results are used to
calculate the overall degree mark on a scale of 0-110.
The final result is based on exam results plus the presentation of a project or dissertation in front of a board
of examiners. The pass mark is 66 and students who
obtain full marks of 110 may also be awarded “summa
cum laude”.

E RASMUS FOR S TUDY
The programme enables students, selected by their
home higher education institutions, to spend a period
of study at the University of Catania, in the framework
of prior inter-institutional agreements stipulated between their institutions and the University of Catania,
in thematic areas indicated in the agreements.
Erasmus students do not pay any inscription or taxes
fees and can activate their mobility from 10th October
and 31st July of every academic year (in August and
September there is no provision of didactic activities).
A basic Italian language knowledge is required (A2
level of Italian language as for the Common European
Framework of Reference for Languages). However,
some courses are held in English language (generally
postgraduates courses within international educational
offer).
Within Erasmus Studio it is possible to undergo a
placement activity but only if it is regularly included
in the learning agreement and if it is preceaded or
followed by, at least, 3 months of didactics activities.
Placement activity must be done in a company linked,
for that purpose, with the University of Catania and
must be tutored by a professor belonging to the student’s study course in Catania, who will be in charge
of the relationships between the University of Catania
and the hosting company.
At the end of selection procedures, held by each foreign
University, the International Relations Office of the
University of Catania (IRO) receives, by e-mail, the
names of the selected students and informs in the
same way, students and universities about admission
procedures at the University of Catania.
Administrative Procedures
Before leaving
Before departure, students must:
37
contents
1. fill in the application form, available on-line,
within the deadlines;
2. wait for the acceptance letter, indicating the assigned study course and didactic tutors. IRO sends
the document by e-mail. The University of Catania
do not register students who haven’t filled in the online application form and obtained the acceptance
letter;
3. fill in learning agreements, indicating the courses
they want to attend and related ECTS credits and
send them to the International Didactic Unit related
to their field of studies (IDU) who will proceed
with their approval. The maximum ECTS credits
for the entire academic year is 60, for one semester
is 30 and for a term is 15. The minimum ECTS credits
to be accepted in Catania is 9. A learning agreement
must include at least 70% of courses given within
the destination department and maximum 30% of
courses given in other departments, if previously
agreed among them. The University of Catania will
not accept students who haven’t regularly transmitted
their learning agreements before their arrival. For
information on courses to choose it will be necessary
to get in contact with didactic tutor and IDU;
4. search for a provisional accommodation consulting
the information provided on the International
Mobility section of the website. Erasmus foreign students have to contact autonomously institutions
proposing accommodation solutions and they will
be glad to accept them at special prices through
an e-mail reservation in English.
Arrival procedures
When students arrive at the University of Catania, they
have to participate to the obligatory Welcome Days,
whose dates correspond to the official starting date
indicated on the attendance certificate.
38
contents
The University of Catania organizes 2 Welcome Days,
one for each semester, whose dates are indicated on
the website.
Students have to bring:
– the acceptance letter;
– the learning agreements;
– one passport-size photo.
During the registration, students receive a university
card to be kept during all the mobility period in
Catania, shown at exams and given back to IRO before
their departure.
Every IDU takes part to the event in order to provide
guidance to incoming students and give necessary
information on mobility didactic aspects and to help
them changing their learning agreements.
Moreover, the department of humanities provides an
intensive Italian and culture course that is offered to
Erasmus incoming students for free.
The Welcome Day is the occasion to get in contact
with Italian students and specifically with students’
Associations in charge of:
– supporting foreign colleagues upon their arrival;
– helping them in getting familiar with Italian culture
and environment;
– assisting them in finding a stable accommodation
for all their mobility length.
The University of Catania will not accept students arriving after Welcome Days, with the exception for
those who, for very relevant reasons (documented by
their International Relations Office) cannot take part to
the event and therefore receive a formal authorization
by the IRO.
39
contents
During mobility period
During their mobility period, students have to:
1. remember that it is necessary to get registration
attendance to all classes indicated in learning
agreements. Professors will regularly register date
and classes hours attended, as a minimum 60% rate
of classes attendance is required in order to be
admitted to the exams;
2. download the evaluation certificate for each exam
and, before starting, provide the document to the
professor who will fill it in entirely (it must be filled
in even if the exam has been failed).
Furthermore, students can:
1. interrupt their mobility only for very important
reasons within the minimum 3 month mobility
period. In this case, it is possible to start again the
mobility period. Conversely, in case of interruption
after 3 months, it is not allowed to continue with
Erasmus mobility. Host university holidays are not
considered as mobility period interruption;
2. extend the Erasmus mobility period, providing the
authorization of home institution by filling in the
form on-line. The authorization has to be transmitted
to IDU, who will proceed with its acceptance and
communication to the IRO. Only if their request has
been accepted, students can extend their mobility
period.
Leaving Catania
At the end of their mobility period and before their
departure, students must:
1. visit IDU with the following documents in original
– student card;
– learning agreement;
– evaluation certificates;
– proof of participation to the courses;
– Italian language course certificate.
40
contents
IDU, once checked all documents, issues a transcript
of records and sends it to the IRO by e-mail.
No document will be given to students.
2. go to the IRO with the same documents presented
to IDU in original, and the office issues an attendance
certificate which, together with the transcript of
records, will be given to the students in a closed
envelop addressed to partner universities. Students
are responsible for the envelop that has to arrive
undamaged to the International Relations Office
of the their own universities.
In order to obtain these certificates, students must
go to the IRO personally during receiving hours as
they are not allowed to delegate other people.
On planning their departure trip, students must
take into consideration IRO public opening days
and hours.

E RASMUS FOR P LACEMENT
Student mobility for placement enables students to spend
a traineeship period in an enterprise or organisation in
Catania.
Students receive an Erasmus grant from their own institution and the placement period is recognized in
their academic career.
Objectives of student placements are:
– help students to adapt the requirements of the
EU-wide labour market;
– enable students develop specific skills including
language skills and improve understanding of the
economic and social culture of the country concerned
in the context of acquiring work experience;
– promote cooperation between higher education
institutions and enterprises;
– contribute to the development of a pool of wellqualified, open minded and internationally experienced young people as future professionals.
Only incoming students belonging to foreign universities
that have an Erasmus Placement Bilateral Agreement with
the University of Catania are accepted to do a training
in Catania. Students with an Erasmus Studio grant can
ask to do a training only if it is indicated in their learning
agreement at the condition established by the specific
action.
Administrative Procedures
Before leaving
Before their departure, students must:
– check if there is an Erasmus Placement agreement
between their home university and University of
Catania and, if the case, contact the professor in
charge of the agreement in order to verify his/her
availability to accept them. Once accepted by the
professor, they jointly define the content of the
training agreement and finally fill in the document;
42
contents
– fill in the application form available on-line and
wait for the IRO official acceptance sent by e-mail;
– search for a provisional accommodation consulting the information provided on the International
Mobility section of the website. Erasmus foreign
students have to contact autonomously institutions
proposing accommodation solutions and they will
be glad to accept them at special prices through
an e-mail reservation in English.
Furthermore, students can get in contact with Italian
student associations helping them in getting familiar with the Italian culture and environment and
assisting them in finding a stable accommodation
for all their mobility length.
During training
As soon as Erasmus Placement students arrive in
Catania, they must:
– go to the IRO, on receiving hours, with one passport-size photograph and a copy of the training
agreement signed by all the parts. They will receive
the student card and all useful information for
their stay in Catania.
– meet their tutors and complete the registration
process at IDU.
– begin their training in the host institution according
to the training agreement defined programme.
Leaving Catania
At the end of their training and before departing,
students must go to the IRO (personally and in receiving
hours) in order to give back their student card and get
the transcript of record and the attendance certificate
in a closed envelop addressed to partner universities.
Students are responsible for the envelope that has to
arrive undamaged to the International Relation Office
of their home university.
43
contents
On planning their departure trip, students must take
into consideration IRO public opening days and
hours.
Students do not have to meet neither the tutor nor
the IDU, because the certificate stating the exact dates
of the training period, the amount of the working hours
and a brief description of the activities carried out is
directly sent by the tutor to IDU that is in charge of
issuing the transcript of records and sending it to IRO
by e-mail.

didactic activities).
A basic Italian language knowledge is required (an A2
level of Italian language as for the Common European
Framework of Reference for Languages) as, even if
some courses are held in English language (generally
postgraduates courses within international educational
offer), the majority are in Italian.
In case of a single student application, it is necessary to
refer to home International Relations Office to get their
authorization and to formally transmit the application
form. In case of a group of students application, the
sending International Relations Office will send to IRO
an annual mobility programme indicating students
number, personal data, mobility periods (1st-2nd semester
or academic year) and their study plans. Such didactic
information will be formalized, in case of acceptance,
in learning agreements.
VISA, insurance and medical assistance

Memorandum of Understanding and
International Cooperation A greements
A way to improve dialogue and experience transfer
between scientific communities, develop joint research
and tuition activities and facilitate the exchange of
teaching staff and students, is to establish a Memorandum of Understanding or International Cooperation
Agreements. These are the first tools for the realization
of all cooperation activities with foreign universities
and institutions for educational and scientific purposes.
The Memorandum of Understanding aims at establishing scientific collaboration contacts increasing
academic and cultural exchanges in education and
research fields, as well as students, researchers and
professors mobility. This kind of agreement doesn’t
have any financial backing.
The International Cooperation Agreement, unlike the
memorandum of Understanding, regulates the relationships among one or more departments of the
University of Catania and the foreign partner Faculties/
departments. This agreement has a specific and defined objective and doesn’t have a suggested format.
It is created and adapted to the needs of the
promoting faculty/department. If the agreement is
proposed by a foreign university, it is advised to
contact a promoting Italian professor according to
the scientific field the cooperation is focused on or
the internationalization delegates.
In order to stipulate a Memorandum of Understanding
and an International Cooperation Agreement it is first
of all necessary that professors promoting the agreement
have a preliminary contact with an Italian professor or
the internationalization delegates, acting as scientific
contact within the University of Catania.
72
contents
The agreement will be put into effect once it is duly
signed by both partners.

City of Catania
Catania is an Italian city on the east coast of Sicily
facing the Ionian Sea, between Messina and Syracuse.
It is the capital of the homonymous province, and is
the second-largest city in Sicily and the tenth in Italy.
Catania is known for its seismic history, having been
destroyed by a catastrophic earthquake in 1169, another
in 1693, and by several volcanic eruptions from the
neighbouring Mount Etna volcano, the most violent of
which was in 1669.
Catania has had a long and eventful history, having
been founded in the 8th century BC. In the 14th century
and the Renaissance, Catania was one of Italy’s most
important and flourishing cultural, artistic, and political
centres, having witnessed the opening in 1434 of the
first university in Sicily. Today, Catania is one of the
main economic, touristic, and educational centres in
the island, being an important hub of industry.
CLIMATE
Sicily is famous or its mild climate, greatly influenced
