AMCHAM In Milan, the ‘Champions’ of Business Between Italy and the US As happens every year, AmCham Italy has presented the Transatlantic Award to six American and Italian businesses which have stood out for their investments in 2013 ssembling over 600 people representing 92 of the largest multinationals in the world, 45 of which American and 47 of which Italian, is a strong signal of optimism and trust in the future of our economy. The Transatlantic Awards have become an important reference point for the Italian and American businesses communities, and are a testament to the friendship, collaboration, and strong economic relationship between the two countries.” These were the words with which Vittorio Terzi, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Italy, introduced the 2013 edition of the Transatlantic Awards Gala Dinner, which took place this past December 2nd in Milan and which, as has become tradition, each year awards those American and Italian businesses that have contributed the most to investments along the transatlantic axis between Italy and the United States. Before an audience of distinguished guests, both Italian and American – including John R. Phillips, the American Ambassador to Italy; Kyle R. Scott, US Consul General in Milan; Roberto Maroni, President of the Lombardy Region; Guido Podestà; President of the Province of Milan; and Giuliano Pisapia, Mayor of Milan – the Transatlantic Awards for 2013 were presented to: Sandro De Poli, President and CEO of General Electric; Mauro Vandini, CEO of Mohawk Industries; Massimo Noviello, President of Owens Illinois Manufacturing of Italy; Roberto Colaninno, President and CEO of the Piaggio Group; Valter Mainetti, CEO of Sorgente Group; and Paola Mazzoleni, USA Director of Human Resources of Tenaris. A special acknowledgement was also presented to Christopher Calenza, Director of the American Academy in Rome, which, since 1894, has upheld an unwavering commitment to strengthening the cultural relationship between Italy and the United States. “Over the past twenty years, Italy has become considerably less attractive to foreign investments, falling from sixth to eleventh place among the European countries, due to an increase in negative factors like cumbersome bureaucracy and a blurry legal framework,” stated Simone Crolla, Managing Director of AmCham Italy, during the course of the event. “Nevertheless, commercial trade between Italy and the US is positive: in 2012 Italian investments in the US reached the figure of $ 23.3 billion (+26.7% as compared to 2011), while American investments in Italy have increased by 3% as compared to 2011, for a total of $26.7 billion. We at AmCham Italy have become the primary representatives and spokespeople for the strength and potential of the economic and political relationship between the two countries.”
