1.1 A LONG TRADITION
The University of Macerata was founded in 1290. Around eight centuries of social
and personal history have rolled by, and since then thousands of students have gone
on to be ruling class members, professionals, entrepreneurs and educators. It would
be true to say that we owe part of Italian, European and international history to
past Maceratesi graduates.
1.2 MACERATA AND ITS TERRITORY
Studying in Macerata can offer a unique cultural experience for students not only
those from Italy, but for students from all over the world as the Eastern side of Central Italy has plenty to offer. Macerata is a medium-sized town (45,000 inhabitants)
standing in the Province of Macerata which lies in the centre of the Marche region
which is nestled between the sea and mountains and surrounded by soft rolling
hills. The quality of life in Macerata is excellent because of the peaceful atmosphere,
clean air, beautiful parks and natural landscape. The Adriatic Sea Coast, ski resorts,
and the Sibillini Mountains National Park are all relatively nearby.
The Province of Macerata is notable for its high employment rate and the large
number of small and medium-sized businesses. Many companies in the Province
are international leaders in various fields including footwear, electronics, lighting
technology, food products, furniture, toys and leather goods. The province has
several attractions for lovers of art and architecture. It is rich with churches, abbeys,
historic palaces and museums that tell the tales of different historical periods and
the important people who are linked to our country. Moreover, the theatre and
outdoor opera house (the Sferisterio) ever year welcomes tourists with a rich theatre and opera season, featuring internationally famous artists and shows. The city of
Macerata offers plenty of ways to enjoy yourself, with several coffee shops, restaurants and pubs throughout the historic centre. These places are popular gathering
spots for many university students and young people to hang out and make new
friends.
1.3 THE CURTAIN RISES
All year round there are lots of enjoyable things to do in Macerata, including cultural events, sporting activities and competitions, theatrical and musical shows. Two
big events in particular have drawn the attention to Macerata, not only from other
parts of Italy but also from other countries of the world: the opera season Mace-

_what are credits?
The University credit system (CFU), which is based on the ECTS system, is represented by numerical values allocated to course units to describe the student workload.
Each credit is equivalent to 25 hours of work including: lessons, hands-on practice,
laboratories, internships and self-study. The total workload of an Italian student is
calculated as 60 credits which correspond to 1500 hours per year. A course unit will
be allocated with credits when the relevant examination is passed by the student
with a minimum grade of 18/30.

1.4 ORGANIZATION OF THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM
THREE-YEAR BACHELOR’S DEGREES AND TWO-YEAR MASTER’S DEGREES
With the Ministerial Decree no. 270 of October 2004 the Ministry of Education brought in extensive reforms of the Italian University system so that there now exist two
levels of degree (laurea):
- The first-level degree is the Laurea Triennale, obtained at the end of a three-year
programme. It prepares students for intermediate job positions in the labour market;
- The second-level degree is the Laurea Magistrale, a postgraduate degree obtained after a two-year programme. It prepares students for higher, managerial and
professional positions.
_what are classes?
Under the new system, following the reform, all degree programmes are grouped
into classes (classi) which relate to a specific field of study. Programmes belonging to
one class all have the same legal value.
Via Pe
rataOpera and the singer-songwriter song festival Musicultura, both of which take
place in the unique and spectacular setting of the Sferisterio Arena.
The University of Macerata is an active partner of the Musicultura festival. This
music contest gives students the chance to be members of the editorial staff and
jury. If you prefer athletic events, the University of Macerata has also been for years
one of the official sponsors of “Lube Volley”, the Italian male volleyball champions.
Through a combination of sport, young people and education Macerata is home to
a winning team.

The city of Fermo, located on a hill facing the Adriatic sea and a short distance from
the area’s principal roads, conserves within its urban structure medieval elements
of exceptional interest: the harmonious Piazza del Popolo and the town hall, the
Palazzo degli Studi, and the 12th century Duomo on the flat ground of Girfalco.
One of the town’s extraordinary treasures is the collection of antique books housed
in the municipal library. The cultural traditions and the artistic legacy come together
to form a strong, industrious social environment, keenly intent on moving forward,
toward international markets.

RIGHTS are admitted under the same conditions as Italian students, with no limitations of quota.
NON-EUROPEAN UNION STUDENTS RESIDING ABROAD

must contact their local Italian Diplomatic Authority and submit a pre-enrolment
application for Italian universities before the specific deadline established by each
Embassy/Consulate. Please specify “Studi Politici e Internazionali, curriculum International Economic and Trade Relations” if you wish to enroll in our Master’s Programme. More information on the procedure is available at:

Macerata. The Student Registry Office admits these candidates conditionally. Their
enrolment is finalized only when, on their arrival in Macerata, they hand in all the
documents specified in the “Step 3” section.
STEP 3_ENROLMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MACERATA
Upon their arrival in Macerata, students must submit the following documents to
the Student Registry Office of the University, in order to finalize their enrolment.
a) School leaving certificate (diploma, final certificate, etc., in the original or certified photocopy) or a replacement document valid to all legal effects;

leaving qualification and 1st cycle H.Ed. qualification;
c) 2 passport-size photos, one of which certified;
d) Certified photocopy of their 1st semester or year/university-level qualification
(degree, diploma or title) which allows access to 2nd semester or year degree programmes in the awarding country;
e) Official University transcript, which records all the subject courses/exams included
in the curriculum of their 1st semester or year/degree cycle H. Ed. qualification and
30
syllabi of the individual subject courses covered by their 1st cycle H.Ed. qualification;
this should provide details on the number of credits allotted to each discipline and
on the credits needed for the award of the final qualification, or on the weekly /
yearly hours for all teaching and learning activities (theory and practice).
f) Copy of their residence permit issued by the competent Italian police office (this
concerns only non-EU citizens legally living in Italy). This permit is to be applied
for within 8 days from arrival in Macerata. You can read more on this procedure in
section 8 of this Guide.
Degree/diploma, as well as all related documents that are issued by a foreign
authority must be submitted along with a legal translation into Italian. Documents
written in a foreign language must be presented in the original copy together with
the official translation into Italian; the translation is a responsibility of the applicant and must be certified by the relevant Italian diplomatic representation abroad.
Translations of the list of undertaken exams and “programmes of the university
exams” passed are not required if these are written in English.
The documentation handed in by the applicant does not allow for direct access/
admission to Laurea Magistrale (second-cycle degree/Two-year Master’s Programme), as the University must also assess if the degree/diploma/certificate held by the
applicant can qualify him or her for admission.
As required by current Italian law, in order to enroll in a second-cycle Master’s
Programme the applicant must have completed a total of 12 years of schooling and
hold an academic degree for a three-year programme granted by a foreign university. Applicants are required to verify that they have completed 12+3 years of education before pre-enrolling.

The International Office offers specific services designed for Exchange/Erasmus
students:
• We will take care of your enrolment and the final recognition of your credits.
• We will help you find accommodation.
• We will introduce you to an Erasmus Buddy – a student who will help you to find
your way around Macerata.
• We will put you in touch with MacErasmus, the European network ESN (Erasmus
Student Network) that organizes outings, cinema forums and cultural activities for
international students. Check their webpage at http://www.esnmacerasmus.it/
• We will help you improve your Italian offering you free courses. You can enrol
either for an online course that will be activated before your arrival or for language
courses during your first and second semester, which will give you ECTS credits.
Useful information for incoming Exchange/Erasmus students can be found on our
website: http://www.unimc.it/incoming-erasmus
6.2 Italian Language Courses
The International Office has established free Italian language courses to help
Exchange/Erasmus students with any difficulties in understanding university lectures. These courses are at no cost for the students and are aimed at developing the
language skills required for your subsequent studies.
Please visit: http://www.unimc.it/corsi-italiano
1_ONLINE COURSE / before arriving in Italy, from 3rd to 14th September 2012
The ONLINE course is based on a web environment, and is organized to allow students to become familiar with the Italian language, the University of Macerata and
Italy in general before their arrival. Although this is not intended to be a proper
language course, it offers a chance for interaction and intercultural communication
among all the students, to share ideas about Italy, Italian language and Italians. In
the online environment you can “virtually” meet and contact other visiting students
and other people from the University of Macerata.
2_ON-SITE COURSES / classroom-based , once you have arrived in Italy
We recommend that you organize your arrival in Macerata based around the dates
of these courses.
36
1st sem. from 17th September to 28th September 2012
Level beginner, intermediate, advanced.
2nd sem. from February to May 2013:
Level to be decided according to the number of applicants and to their Italian language skills.
If you wish to attend our Italian language courses (either online or on-site) please
mark the appropriate entry in your online application form.
The on-site courses are held in two cycles. During the 1st semester they are meant
to be intensive and preparatory to the academic lectures. During the 2nd semester
they are held in the same period when the lectures take place. Each course will last
40 hours at beginner, intermediate or advanced level, depending on the results of
a preliminary assessment exam which tests your prior Italian language skills. 8 ECTS
total credits per academic year are recognized for students attending 75% of the
classes and passing the final exam. Please note that the 8 ECTS credits for the Italian
Language Course can be awarded only once in an academic year. So if you get 8
ECTS credits from the first semester course and you attend the second semester
course too, you will not get any further credits for the latter.
3_COURSES BY THE UNIVERSITY LANGUAGE CENTRE / CLA
There are free courses open to all international students enrolled at the University
of Macerata. The courses are held throughout the semester for a total of 40 hours.
Please note: these courses will not provide ECTS. However, at the end of the course
you will receive a certificate confirming the hours that you attended and the grade
you obtained in the final exam. You can find more information on the available
courses at: http://www.unimc.it/cla/
4_ SELF-STUDY SOFTWARE “TELL ME MORE”
During your stay in Macerata, you can continue to study Italian with the self-study
software “Tell me more” available for free at Palazzo Ciccolini. “Tell me more” is a
very easy-to-use program. You can listen to dialogs, read texts and do exercises, and
immediately check your results.
We recommend that you make the most of all this software offers to allow you
to improve your knowledge of Italian and a range of other European languages.
37
When you use the software for the first time, ask for help from a university technician (available at Palazzo Ciccolini). After that you can use the system independently during the opening hours of the building.

6.3 ERASMUS BUDDY
The International Relations Office gives all Erasmus/Exchange students the opportunity to apply for an Erasmus Buddy, i.e. a student from the University of Macerata
who will help them get integrated into Macerata’s university and social life. If you
want to take part in the programme, tick the relevant item in the application form.
We always try to find Erasmus Buddies for all international students. However, since
the programme is on a voluntary basis, there is always a possibility that there might
not be enough Italian students for all the applicants.
6.4 LEARNING AGREEMENT & ACADEMIC COORDINATORS
All exchange students define their Learning Agreement together with the coordinator of their area of study. Upon your arrival in Macerata, we suggest that you check
the office hours (ricevimento) of your Erasmus/Exchange coordinator and arrange a

6.5 HOW TO SELECT SINGLE COURSES
In order to facilitate them in their period of study, the University of Macerata
allows all Erasmus/Exchange students to attend any and every course of whichever
department they are interested in (even if different from the area stated in their
Bilateral Agreement) on the condition that:
- Their Learning Agreement has been approved by the Erasmus coordinators of both
the home and the hosting institution;
- The course attended is delivered in the current academic year.
After having selected your courses, you will attend your lectures without having
to register in advance – you simply go to the first lesson available. This does not
apply to students outside bilateral agreements and to those who wish to attend
the Scuole di Specializzazione, the Ph.D. Programmes and the one-year Master’s
Programmes; Exchange students are not admitted to such courses, unless there are
specific agreements in place. More details on timetables, lecture rooms, lecturers’
office hours, etc. are available on the web page of the single Departments (http://
www.unimc.it/didattica/facolta). The dates of the final exams are available on this
webpage: http://www.unimc.it/esami-exams
6.6 FINAL EXAMS
6.6.1 Student memorandum
1_ Check the official dates of the exams on the web page “BACHECA APPELLI” and
search for the department in which you are taking the course: http://www.unimc.it/
esami-exams
40
2_ To take the final exam, you will have to register 10 days in advance by sending an
email message to the lecturer, specifying:
- your name;
- your exchange study program (Erasmus or bilateral agreement);
- the exam title;
- the date you will be taking the exam;
For each exam session there are, generally, three different dates you can choose
from to take the same exam. When you register you have to choose one. If you
don’t pass the exam, you can present yourself for re-examination and register again
for the next exam date. You are allowed to take exams in the exam sessions of
January, February, March, May, June and July. However, you will not be allowed to
take any exam in the session of September as your Erasmus period must end by 31st
July 2013 at the latest. Section 2.2 explains how you can contact your lecturers.
3_ On the day of your exam, do not forget to bring your libretto universitario
(student academic record) with you. Your teacher will record your exam, your marks
and the number of ECTS credits awarded, both on your libretto universitario and
on the official exam register (the libretto is not legally valid and is only a student
memorandum).
4_ At the end of your stay, the Centro Rapporti Internazionali (CRI office) will register all of your exams in the “Transcript of records” which will be sent by post to
your home university, within two months after your return at the latest.
6.6.2 Teacher memorandum
- International students on mobility programmes can access all degree courses
without distinction, both from the first and second level, attend the lectures and
take the related exams (except for the Specializing Schools, Doctorates and Master’s
Programmes).
- The exams of mobility international students will be recorded following exactly
the same procedure adopted for Italian students, carefully filling all the fields provided in the exam register.
41
- When recording an exam, the lecturer must always indicate the number of credits
awarded according to the Italian study plan. Should the student ask to take an
exam for a different number of credits compared to what is indicated in the current
study plan, the home Institution Coordinator will have to make a specific request
for this in writing stating the reason. Then, the Delegate to International Relations
of the relevant area at Macerata University will evaluate if the request is relevant.
However, only special cases will be accepted for this procedure.
- In the exam register, in the space for the student registration number (“numero
di matricola”), the lecturer must write the type of mobility or exchange programme. So, for example, «Erasmus student», «Bilateral agreement student», etc. (as
provided in the student academic record under the item «Università degli Studi di
Macerata»).
- The session in which the international student takes the exam must correspond to
the academic mobility year of the student. For instance: if a student is part of the
Erasmus exchange for the academic year 2012-2013, he/she cannot take exams scheduled for students of previous academic years, otherwise if this happens the results
will be automatically cancelled.
- International students must take the exams following the prearranged schedule
and the enrolment procedures as requested by the various Departments. If some
exam dates clash and the students cannot extend their mobility stay until the next
available exam date, they can submit a specific request to the lecturer, duly documented and with the detailed reasons to postpone the exam. The lecturer can reopen the exam session (always complying with the session beginning and end dates)
and record the exam by clearly specifying that the re-opened session is reserved
only to international students who have clashing exam dates. However, only special
cases and oral exams can be accepted for this procedure.
6.7 EXCHANGE/ERASUS STUDENT ACCOMMODATION
For the a. y. 2012/2013, the International Office will book on behalf of exchange
incoming students an amount of accommodation places in University residences.
If you wish to apply for one of the available rooms (mainly double), choose the relevant entry in the section “Accommodation” of the online application form by:
• 30th June (1st semester students or full a.y. students)
• 30th October (2nd semester students)
Shortly after these deadlines, we will let you know if you have been assigned a
room by sending you a confirmation email. In this email we will specify the residence you have been assigned, its costs and services. You will then have approximately
10 days to accept or decline this offer.
The rooms in University residences will be assigned on a first come - first served
basis, based on the submission date of your online application form. The price
range for a double room in a University residence is from 165,00 to 180,00 Euros per
month, per person.
Please note that the number of places available in University residences is very limited. While waiting to know whether you have been assigned a room, we suggest
that you also consider looking for a room in a private shared flat, which is the most
popular accommodation option among resident and international students alike.
To find out more about private flats, you can read section 7.3 of this guide or take a
look at the current ads in the online notice boards: www.unimc.it/private-flats.
We also suggest that you apply for an Erasmus Buddy, as he/she can help you to find
a room in Macerata.
- The lecturer must submit through the university post service the copies of the
exams registers (yellow sheets) to the Student Registry Office of the relevant area
immediately after the end of the exam. The International Relations Office will draw
up the “Transcript of Records” based on what is submitted to the Student Registry
Office, and will promptly forward it to the student’s home Institution.
