The concept of luxury has changed. In a complex and flexible work context, luxury takes also on the meaning of having time to be free, moving, and to connect with other people. In a society that is dedicateci towards intensive and frenetic exploitation of free time, luxury means being able to simply relax without the need to do something unique, adventurous or even downright dangerous ... In a world where everyone is conditioned by heaps of messages, people are progressively turning towards exclusive items: these items no longer bave any special symbolic meaning, and owning them is not representative of anything except oneself: they are not an expression of one’s identity, social position or culture. Luxury no longer means owning something that is luxurious and amazing, but rather going in search of whatever is rare. It needs not necessarily be expensive, but it is precious to the individual that has chosen it, because it is capable of stimulating their imagination, taking them back intime or projecting them into the future, helping to discover a part of themselves. Luxury means being able to fully enjoy a day in the sun, breathe calmly, eat a simple me al that reminds one of the childhood in a peaceful and remote piace, make small dreams come true; even if these are everyday dreams they are stili significant in defining one’s identity. Recognition actually li es a t the heart of every human being: the possibility of being able to see oneself reflected in others, or in what one has made, has always been a driving force to create, to discover oneself, to progress. Luxury in today’s world is being able to achieve all these things, without limitations in terms of time and space, just following the tempo of one’s own dreams. So then luxury becomes associated with experience, the wish to carve a free space where one can find or develop beauty, comfort, lightness, sophisticated and original taste, a sense of mobility that is open to the entire world, to the discovery of the micro-space in which one moves, lives and breathes. Lifeemotions will take you on this fascinating journey, in “exploring excellence”. In this editions, we want to look at the paths of luxury that are currently evolving, capture new offerings and emerging names, rediscover traditional styles and the leading figures in trends from the past. Our main objective is to create bridges between the old and the modern, new roads that make it possible to follow the increasingly rapid and significant changes in the world of communications, technology, culture, with a view to finding the most secret and attractive features. We are seeking, experimenting, and trying to make the most out of every breath of innovation, every comeback to the classics and we offer you this in the hope that something there may tickle your memory, stimulate your imagination and become deeply satisfying. Personality Re Mohammed VI di Daniele Biagi Mohammed VI is the Alaouite dynasty’s 18th king. The 50-yearold monarch ascended to the throne in 1999 and immediately won the approval of his subjects. He’s a modern ruler, who studied in Rabat and at the University of Nice, and a sportsman with a wellknown passion for personal watercraft. He’s open to dialogue and aims to lead his people towards progress, but with a velvet glove and diplomatic approach, without forsaking tradition. In 2002, King Mohammed married Salma Bennani, a 24-year-old middle-class graduate in computer science, a Fez beauty, flame-haired like many Berbers. She’s the country’s first princess (Morocco does not attribute the title of queen) not of noble lineage and is known as Lalla (“woman” in Berber) Salma. Another unprecedented action was the king’s decision to show photos of the future princess before the ceremony: until then, royal brides were never seen in public, spending their lives cloistered in the palace. In 2003 Salma gave birth to Crown Prince Mulay Hassan, followed by Princess Lalla Khadija in 2007. Lalla Salma writes a blog that is extremely popular both at home and abroad, and she’s known for her commitment to eradicating illiteracy, as well as to her foundation for fighting cancer. 13 Personaggi Una coppia regale dall’allure molto occidentale. 14 They are a regal couple with a very Western allure. King Mohammed VI is a supporter of moderate Islamism and in 2004 he reformed family law to ensure more rights for women. In his 15 years of rule he has revolutionized the image of Morocco. The country’s GDP is close to 5% and there are over one million inhabitants in Marrakech. He will be remembered in history for his revolutionary work in domestic politics. From July 2011 Morocco is no longer an absolute monarchy and via a referendum the king delegated part of his powers to parliament, inspired by the kind of monarchy seen in Spain and the UK. From 2011 the country’s official language is Berber, taught in schools alongside Arabic. King Mohammed VI is also very active in foreign policy and he has always sought agreements with neighboring countries to increase construction, healthcare, telecommunications, and energy, with human development always to the fore. He’s also known as a “green” king, sensitive to the environment, and Morocco has committed to achieving 42% of renewable energy by 2020, thus becoming an example of sustainability and political balance for many other North African states. She’s taken the world’s runways in her stride, posed for leading fashion magazines, and with 50 other female authors she’s written a book, Le mie amiche dicono che... Gli indirizzi segreti delle milanesi. Published by Electa, this an invaluable guide to finding the most unusual, out-ofthe-way spots in Milan; its proceeds are being donated to the Dominique Lapierre foundation City of Joy. Who better than this fashion industry and public relations expert— and darling of Milan and Rome high society—to organize fashion shows, exclusive events and exhibitions for the general public with success and professional flair? We meet Laura in her Milan offices, Morino Studio, which she designed and decorated herself. Glamour tall, blond and elegant, with poise that would stir the envy of many a red carpet celebrity. In spite of her numerous charity and business engagements, she never neglects her loved ones: her sweetheart, Adriano, and her cherished furbaby Luce. Judging by the decor, you have a soft spot for American design? Yes, that’s true ... I like everything that comes from the United States, from fashion to design. New York is the city I like most, and if I didn’t live in Milan I’d live there. I deco- rated my office myself, just as I’ve done with all my homes. I love to design and create the atmosphere of where I live. Here I wanted to create an American feel, and the space lends itself so well. For the reception area I chose a modern look, while for my studio the mood is Ralph Lauren, a style I just adore. Do you prefer to have your home close to your office? Close? They’re on the same floor! On one side is my husband’s office, our home is in the middle, and on the other side is this fantastic place where I work every day. Describe your typical day. I wake up at 8.30 and have my entire day planned out in my mind: it’s chock full of appointments and meetings. I don’t waste a minute. After an intense day out of the office, I come back here in the late afternoon or early evening, which is the best time for me to concentrate and come up with plans. Sometimes I stay at my desk until 2 or 3 in the morning. After all, it doesn’t take long to get home. 24 What’s your idea of luxury? Currently, the greatest luxury is finding time for myself. A mini bio? I started out as a model. Morino Studio was set up in 1993 to organize runway shows, so I could keep working in fashion, the field I love the most. In the beginning I just organized and directed catwalks, for both ready-to-wear and haute couture. Then times changed, so I expanded into 360° event coordination, not only for the fashion industry but also in the fields of art, design and culture. I happened into public relations when a client asked me to invite my friends and acquaintances from show business, culture, sports, industry and finance to one of her events. I did that and it was a success. Ever since, I’ve been constantly involved in PR. For example, when the Campari calendar was presented with spokeswoman Milla Jovovich and other celebrities, I filled out the red carpet with my mailing list of jet-setters—and that’s a list I keep near and dear! How do you manage to get your paper invitations delivered quickly and reliably? Good question. I’ve tried a few and when it comes to 800 – 1,000 invitations, I use Poste Italiane. They’re the most reliable. Glamour Despite the current situation, are your clients loyal? They are, fortunately. I’ve been working with many of my clients for years. Ninety years of designer jewelry Damiani jewelry is a favorite of international celebrities like Sharon Stone and Jennifer Aniston; it has enhanced the grace of Gwyneth Paltrow, the exuberance of Milla Jovovich, the polish of Isabella Rossellini and the charm of Sofia Loren. Its diamonds have had unforgettable ambassadors like Brad Pitt, one of the first male icons of inarguable sex appeal to convey the splendor of a piece of jewelry for women. Damiani is one of the few Italian jewelers that has always designed and produced its own pieces, making the brand especially exclusive. Following the tradition of luxury hand-made jewelry, throughout its nearly 100-year history the company has been a strong innovator, one of the first family businesses to focus on distinctive design and the use of new technologies. Worldwide, it has long been one of Italy's most coveted names in jewelry. The Damiani brand is backed by a solid history based on tradition and experience in the art of jewelry making, which has opened doors to markets around the globe, in Europe, the United States and Asia. 28 Jewelry The family The story of the Damiani business begins in 1924 in Valenza (Piedmont), a small town that in the late 1800s was already the heart of the Italian jewelry industry, home to the best goldsmiths and setters of precious stones and diamonds. Here in the province of Alessandria, Enrico Grassi, patriarch of the Damiani family and a skilled master goldsmith, began to design and produce diamond jewelry in his workshop— tiny works of art made for the aristocratic and wealthy families of the era. His jewels were loved for their classic shapes, the exquisite setting of diamonds and precious stones, and the perfect balance between stateliness and splendor. Enrico's son Damiano continued his legacy, and in the 1960s had what was then a revolutionary idea: to present the collections in a catalog, complete with prices. The Damiani name, well known in the area, began to spread; and commercially and industrially, the group expanded. No longer a small family firm but a bona fide business, Damiani promoted research, innovation and design, which were avant-garde concepts in the field of jewelry. As it marched toward the future, the brand maintained the exclusive cachet and expert human touch that had made it stand out from the beginning. Since the death of Damiano Grassi Damiani in 1996, the company has been run by his wife Gabriella (now honorary president) and by his three children, Guido, Giorgio and Silvia Grassi Damiani. Its shares have been publicly traded since 2007. 29 Gioielli 30 I valori Rispetto delle persone e promozione dell’etica del lavoro. Values Personal respect and business ethics are fundamental values for the third generation of Damiani. All of the group's suppliers observe the UN resolutions and Kimberly Process standards to ensure that diamonds do not come from areas where their sale may fund armed conflict. Meanwhile, Damiani insists on exclusive, superbly crafted, 100% Italian pieces that honor its jewelry making heritage: the philosophy that has made it an international brand with a strong family tradition. In 1976 Damiani received its first Diamond International Award for the best piece of jewelry featuring diamonds. The coveted prize was awarded to the "Shark Mouth" bracelet in platinum and yellow gold, with a pavé of 41 carats' worth of white diamonds. I proventi della collezione unisex The Maji Collection (Maji in Swahili significa acqua) sono stati consegnati all’associazione no profit Drop in the bucket che ha provveduto a realizzare i pozzi. 32 Jewelry Social commitment Damiani has always supported those in need and valued women's employment, and is quick to respond in the face of natural calamity. In 2011, it donated its entire profit from the limited Damiani for Japan collection to the victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. In 2010, through the humanitarian project Clean Water with actress Sharon Stone, it financed the construction of the first 50 new wells in Africa, which gave more than 10,000 people access to clean drinking water in their villages. Proceeds from the unisex The Maji Collection (Maji is Swahili for water) were donated to the non-profit Drop in the Bucket Association, which built the wells. In 2012, Damiani helped Italy's earthquake victims in Emilia by financing Vola nel Cuore, a non-profit association that provided care and assistance to children in emergency camps. At home by the sea di Daniel Sirman è la mia casa Patricia Kieran can’t be too far from the sea, so this artist and interior decorator famous for her seashell creations has taken her home closer to the beach. A stone haven with huge windows, built at the level of the water, which is so close that when the wind blows and the clouds gather on the horizon, waves lap the path leading to the beach and the pier. From her windows you feel as if you’re floating above the sea. She likes this view, hugged by the clouds, the port, and the mountains of Liguria, which remind her of the Irish coast where her father was born. A coast always whipped by the wind, where the Atlantic is never silent. When she’s not creating fantastic objects from shells and corals, which she uses to decorate homes all over the world, including her own, she’s happy to dive into the deep blue sea. Trisha’s an expert diver and during her forays to the sea bed she is never without a camera, which she uses to take random shots. When I get back to dry land I look at the images and that’s when I discover a myriad of hidden things. I see the perfect design of fish, stony and soft corals. It’s like a treasure hunt and each time I look at the image I see something that wasn’t there before; each photo is an endless journey of discovery.” Her strolls into the blue bring inspiration for her creations: frames and friezes, lighting, plates, decorations, achieved by weaving together everything the sea can offer with her refined ideas and sweeping imagination. 40 Houses fold on a chimney shelf; cowries of all colors from milky white to brown crown frames for paintings and photographs; the shells of turret and cone snails and murex are glued to mother-of-pearl dishes; fistfuls of starfish are scattered over chairs. Looking at these creations you realize how the simplicity of nature creates a sense of the most unique, unattainable luxury. Untreated rocks and rustic wood, only in white, are used as supports for these precious artefacts that look so ephemeral and delicate, and are the only materials that can be in harmony with what comes from water. Each room in Trisha’s house is a world unto itself, teeming with magical objects – just like an 18th-century Wunderkammer. A museum housed by just four walls that will make your eyes – but also your heart – open wide. “Sea creatures, with their silent charm, are able to convey incredible emotions: everyone should know them,” she says. Anyone who doesn’t dive and has no experience of the underwater world shouldn’t miss out on these wonders. So this is not only her work as an artist, it’s also her mission: designing objects to bring awareness of sea life to those who have never seen them or are unable to have them close by every day. Il motore, in posizione centrale, a 12 cilindri con cilindrata di 6,5 litri eroga una potenza di 700 CV/515 kW a 8250 giri/min, le eccellenti doti di Since the outset, the carmaker of the raging bull has been creating sports cars on the cutting edge in terms of both style and performance. This long tradition now includes the Aventador LP 700-4, the epitome of a supercar of which customers demand not only class and elegance but also peerless quality, performance, reliability, technical perfection and exclusivity, or in short, an extreme, highly personalized car. Before looking at the original design of this supercar, with its world-class performance—top speed of 350 km/h and 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds—let’s examine its technological advancements such as the carbon-fiber mono45 Auto di Oggi ripresa e il rombo suggestivo costituiscono un ulteriore elemento di fascino. The central monocoque and the front and rear frames are an engineering solution that by uniting into a single structure the passenger compartment, the floor and the roof ensures high structural rigidity and therefore the utmost safety. The centrally placed, 12-cylinder engine with 6.5 liter displacement produces 700 hp/515 kW of power at 8,250 rpm, while the outstanding acceleration times and evocative rumble make it all the more desirable. The permanent four-wheel drive (hence the number “4” in the car’s name), ISR robotized gearbox— an exceptional feature in a roadster—and pushrod suspension ensure extremely precise and reliable 46 New Car pulite, ridotte all’essenziale, e dalla silhouette monolitica. As for the look of the Aventador LP 700-4, the designers at the Lamborghini Style Center drew inspiration from modern aeronautics to achieve a better aerodynamic penetration coefficient. Based on that stylistic philosophy, the line features clean surfaces reduced to the bare essentials and a monolithic silhouette. Accordingly, the geometry of the roof affords more room for both the driver and the passenger, while removing bulk from the front section and creating an unbroken line with the trunk. The side view features two pronounced curves: one drawing attention to the front fender and the other proceeding 47 Auto di Oggi denziato dalle larghe minigonne laterali. The doors open upward and are inset deeply with respect to the outer contour; the consistency of style and function is evident in the wide side skirts. The front is sharply pointed, the raging bull emblem marking both the tip and midline of the car; the air vents with glossy black inserts are turned upward and the light units are protected by trapezoidshaped covers. Il successo riscontrato dalle Gran Turismo con il “toro” come marchio consentono At the 1963 Turin Motor Show there was a new kid on the block, introduced by an industrialist from outside Bologna named Ferruccio Lamborghini, founder of Lamborghini Trattori in 1949 and Lamborghini Bruciatori in 1960. Entrepreneurial success and a passion for sports cars were key to embarking on this challenge to the most prestigious models of the time. The prototype 350 GTV, its body designed by Franco Scaglione, was a hit and allowed production to begin in 1964. The commercial model, built by Carrozzeria Touring and christened the 350 GT, had a somewhat revised shape while respecting the original style features and volumes of the prototype. In 1966, the first model evolved into the new 400 GT and the displacement of the 12-cylinder engine increased from 3500 cc to 4000 cc. Gli anni Settanta vedono ers with the raging bull emblem encouraged the next step—a risky but victorious one, which would give Lamborghini Automobili a permanent place on the map—the launch of the innovative Miura at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show. The reaction to the new car was sensational and the Miura became an instant legend. For the automaker from Sant’Agata Bolognese, the future was bright, and Ferruccio Lamborghini made his dream come true: building a factory whose cars were the stuff of legend. In 1968 the Islero made its debut, as another classical take on the 350 and 400 GT. The ‘70s rolled out the Jarama and the Urraco, and in 1973 the Countach, which would stay in production for some twenty years, but Ferruccio Lamborghini was not there when it made its debut. He had left the company due to the changed climate; years of internal disputes had made life difficult at the plant and the atmosphere was no longer compatible with the founder’s temperament, so he sold his shares and left. Another challenge was posed by the gas crisis: to avoid exceeding the tax limits that were penalizing the 53 Auto d’Epoca 54 dello più potente da 3 litri. Nel 2001 debutta la Murciélago e nel 2003 la Gallardo. market, the Urraco was presented in a two-liter version, alongside the more powerful three-liter model. In 1976 the company launched the Silhouette and studied the feasibility of an off-road model, but Lamborghini’s finances were by now in difficult shape. On the strength of its charisma, in 1981 the company was reborn as Nuova Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini S.p.A., unveiling the Jalpa at the Geneva Motor Show. The new version of the Countach debuted in 1985, and in 1986 the off-road LM002 went into production. In 1987 the automaker was acquired by Chrysler, while the Diablo was rolled out in traditional Lamborghini tradition, and in 1994 it was taken over by Indonesian investors. Contact between Sant’Agata Bolognese and Audi in 1998 led to a turning point: sale of the company to the German automaker. The aim is to make hidden treasures accessible to all, while respecting nature, the environment and history. The Imperial Cities There is no lack of “raw materials”: a tour of the imperial cities of Fez, Rabat, Meknes and Marrakech is still one of those dream vacations to take at least once in a lifetime. Just a few hours on a plane to discover art, nature and unrivalled sensa81 Vacanze più moderni. A unique experience, where the ocean mingles with the mountains and lush green gardens border on deserts of rock and sand. Trekking in Rabat or tea in the desert with the Bedouin tribes, just outside the bewitching city of Marrakech. Morocco is a natural bridge between the treasures of mysterious Africa and Western culture. Fez The most ancient of the imperial cities, Fez is the symbolic heart of Morocco. The medina, untouched by new buildings, is mysterious and fascinating, and its teeming souk or market sells everything. The henna souk is particularly famous and offers the special dye used for artistic tattoos on hands and feet. Religious tradition is palpable: the city is the birthplace of the first religious university in the Islamic world, there are numerous 14th-century Koranic schools (madrasas) with fine inlays, and the Kairaouine Mosque. The monumental Nejjarine Fountain is a must, in an old caravanserai that is now the Museum of Wooden Arts and Crafts, as is the royal palace with its bronze doors. Outside the medina’s maze of almost 10,000 narrow streets there are many famous art galleries that earned Fez the alias of “City of Culture,” also acknowledged in its twinning with Florence. Marrakech The Pearl of the South, at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, is the best-known of the imperial cit- 83 Vacanza bancarelle di cibo, i giocolieri, gli indovini, i medici di strada, i venditori di denti e gli incantatori di serpenti. It is a lively center of art and culture, also known as the “Red City” for the color of its clay walls. It is the second imperial city. Not to be missed are the madrasas in the medina, famous for the high pink walls that also enclose luxurious hotels and riads housed in old palaces; the city gates, richly decorated with wood, stucco and glass; and the imperial palaces, some of which are now open to the public, like the Bahia, with storks perched along its walls. Another unmissable experience is a visit to Jemaa el-Fnaa at sunset, the square packed with hundreds of food stalls, jugglers, fortune tellers, medicine men, tooth sellers, and snake charmers. Eyes and ears will be stunned. The minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque, the city’s symbol, rises in the background. Outside the medina, which is home to fine stores selling silverware, carpets and jewelry (you just need to know where to look), lie the large modern districts of the city. A few hours’ drive away is the Nectarome Aromatic Garden, where you can wander among native crops, eat bread baked in clay ovens, and purchase the local essential oils and herbs. Towards the Middle Atlas are the spectacular Ouzoud Falls, which plummet over 300 feet. You can reach the base along a red-earth footpath lined by centuries-old trees and stalls. Palme, grandi viali e bian86 Holidays Rabat The current capital has a history that makes it unique – it was the departure point for the invading armies setting off for Spain and it was here that the Muslims returned after they were driven out by the Spanish. No other place is as effective at conveying the mingling of past and present, and the city’s history is a mixture of Islamic and European elements. Don’t miss the Mausoleum of Mohammed V (the current king’s grandfather, who played an important role in winning Morocco’s independence from France), in richly decorated Moroccan style; the Hassan Tower, the minaret of the unfinished mosque destroyed by an earthquake in 1755; and, outside the old city, the Kasbah of the Udayas (old palace) that rises sheer above the ocean. Every street is crowded with little coffee shops and there are fine beaches where you can relax. Meknes Meknes will welcome you with its circle of 25 miles of urban walls. The city is also known as the “Little Versailles,” copied by the Alaouite king Moulay Ismail, who knew Louis XIV of France. Make sure you pass through the magnificent Bab Mansour and Bab Ber Dian gates, typical of all old Moroccan cities, and don’t forget to visit the Jewish quarter and the medina. Holidays Other Destinations Casablanca Casablanca is the country’s economic capital and an old colonial city that still retains its exotic air in its great squares and Moorish buildings, with arches adorned with stuccowork and inlays. Western influences are increasingly strong, however, and you will find fashionable nightspots, restaurants and luxury clothes stores. An ancient atmosphere can be savored in the old medina, which is much smaller than those of the other cities. The recently built Hassan II Mosque, overlooking the ocean, is one of the largest in the world. Essaouira Formerly known as Mogador, Essaouira will serve as inspiration for Morocco’s future seaside resorts thanks to its palm trees, wide avenues and white buildings with prestigious wellness centers and spas. Behind lies the fortified citadel with crenellated walls, home to the workshops of cedar wood and ebony inlayers and musical instrument makers, along with the famous Jewish quarter and cemetery (now abandoned). Every June the city hosts the festival of gwana music, introduced to Morocco by African slaves, which so interested Jimi Hendrix that he came all the way to Essaouira to discover it. Orson Welles filmed many of the scenes of his movie Othello on the city walls. Tangier Standing next to the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier is a chaotic, cosmopolitan city, whose heyday was in the 1920s and ’30s when it became a bridge between East and West. Its hypnotic, ambiguous allure inspired writers and film directors. It was the setting for Bernardo Bertolucci’s movie The Sheltering Sky. Following this period of great fame, however, the city was forgotten and abandoned for years. Today it is being rebuilt and is one of the destinations that will be presented with a complete facelift for 2020. 89 Un’oasi di pace e di grande raffinatezza Hotel di Jane Cristina Mota Leite Il momento magico è al tramonto quando le mura del Royal Mansour diventano color porpora e Marrakech la città rosa, si accende di luci. An oasis of peace and splendor The magic happens at sundown, when the walls of the Royal Mansour turn to purple and Marrakech, the city of pink, begins to sparkle with lights. In the background is the outline of the Koutobia, the city's iconic minaret, and in the distance the peaks of the Atlas Mountains are confused with the evening fog. An oasis of peace before the sands of the Sahara. The Royal Mansour, called the most extraordinary hotel in the world, leaves its guests with an indelible memory of the history and 91 Hotel patio, giardini e giochi d’acqua. It's a pleasant experience that detracts nothing from the magic and mystery of the city. Design. The elegant decor, including the zellige (fantastic geometric mosaics of tiny, hand-cut tiles), demonstrates the technical and artistic skill of the local artisans, which is passed from father to son as tradition would have it. Precious materials like marble, inlaid cedar, stucco work and crystal underscore the care for the smallest detail, as we find in the grand royal palaces of Marra- tradition of Morocco, a testament to the architecture and allure of Moroccan culture. These are incomparable emotions, nearly impossible to forget. Architecture. A spectacular setting, recalling the classical structure of a medina—a city within the city, with square constructions surrounding a patio, gardens and water features. The high walls, which on one side are the very walls of the city, enclose 53 riads: private, three-story residences where tranquillity and discretion reign. Each riad is furnished differently, with traditional hand finishes, antiques and madeto-measure furniture, and has its own fountain-embellished gar- den, top-floor pool and fireplace. Comfort is assured by the latest in home engineering. Every riad has a valet, housekeeping staff, and possibility for butler service. The Riad d’Honneur is a 2,000 square meter dwelling with four bedrooms and butler service 24 hours a day. All around is a 3.5 hectare park of palm and olive trees. In perfect symmetry with the hotel's main park, it echoes the Alhambra gardens in Granada: a marvelous place to relax or wander aimlessly among paths, flowered islands, fountains, scents and colors. I ristoranti. 94 Hotel kech or the gates to the city with their infinite repetition of shapes and patterns. Colors. Marrakech is the city of four colors—pink, yellow, orange and purple—that meld with the white and green of Arab tradition; they are placed harmoniously throughout the entire Royal Mansour. Restaurants. The striking Grande Table Marocaine and Grande Table Française are two small symmetrical palaces built in Moorish style, with Spanish and Portuguese influences. Yannick Alléno, the Parisian chef with three Michelin stars, offers his own take on traditional North African cuisine. The opulent decor echoes the art of the magnificent cooking. Spa. A 2,500 square meter marble and wood spa on three floors is a place of peace and serenity where the body will rejoin the mind, following the Moroccan ritual of the hammam, argan oil massages and cold and hot baths. Go for a personalized beauty plan for body or face, with prestigious brands like Sisley and Chanel, or fitness in the spacious gym. Or just swim in the large indoor pool, concealed among real orange trees. In the lavish tea room, try a light meal or a refreshing mint brew, to relax as the sun goes down. As soon as you cross the threshold of the main doors, carved directly into the wall, you'll know that a stay at the Royal Mansour is a promise of good fortune and delight. Paris: the lure of elegance The air in Paris is magical...charismatic, enchanting, dreamy...the adjectives could go on forever. It’s come a long way since the Romans called it Lutetia Parisiorum, becoming capital of one of the oldest European monarchies, of two empires (Napoleon I and Napoleon III) and of an exemplary democracy. They’ve all left their mark, forming a marvelous city that now rightly considers itself a capital of luxury and that draws every social class into its aura of elegance, style and gentility. La digressione gourmand non può fare dimenticare la Cattedrale di Notre Dame e naturalmente il Louvre, il Musée d’Orsay e l’ultramoderno Centre Pompidou, opera del nostro 98 City Although many other cities have reached excellent standards of living, Paris remains an archetype: a paradigm of history and tradition, with extraordinary class that shines through at every occasion. Paris has it all, from the macro to the micro: every visit—and you’ll need several trips to discover its infinite charms, because the French capital is like a beautiful woman who never completely shows all—will reveal a new and unexpected facet of its romantic, sophisticated soul. Even when the purpose is top-tier shopping at the Maisons that in the world’s imagination have become akin to sacred, esoteric temples, no-one should forgo a visit to the Eiffel Tower, “she” who has inspired artists and infinite passions. Enjoy a spectacular view and the finest of meals at Le Jules Verne (second floor with private elevator), owned by Alain Ducasse: the celebrated French gourmet and naturalized citizen of Monaco, perhaps the most famous and star-studded chef on the planet, who favors olive oil and Guérande salt, no longer cooks, and goes from one restaurant to another to run their kitchens and keep them in line. There are roughly 30 of which he calls himself “artistic director,” or more accurately “trainer,” where he says his students are better than he is: try them and see! In the midst of Paris, Ducasse also offers a journey in time to the legendary bouchons of Lyon’s textile trade, at Aux Lyonnais where the old recipes for hungry silk weavers have been brought up to date in intriguing style. Our gastronomic digression can’t let us neglect Notre Dame Cathedral and of course the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay and the ultramodern Pompidou Center, by Italy’s Renzo Piano, 99 Città Renzo Piano, con il suo eccezionale Museo d’Arte Contemporanea e perché no le fogne e le catacombe, una vera curiosità da non perdere. And why not check out the sewers and the catacombs, curiosities not to be missed. For the Louvre alone, a week would not be enough: why run around breathless, never stopping to enjoy the beauty? Of course, we all have our own tastes that we can fine-tune as we please, but the real advantage of those lucky enough to have plenty is the luxury of gratifying mind and body alike by savoring the epitome of the good and the lovely— and in that, Paris is inexhaustible! For the utmost in pampering, choose from an outstanding range of suites from any number of prestigious hotels, until the legendary Ritz re-opens to astonish us all. It hardly gets any classier than the discretely intimate, sedately luxurious penthouse suite of the Four Seasons Hotel George V, a Parisian landmark built in 1928 by André Terrail (owner of the legendary restaurant Tour d’Argent). The Four Seasons was constructed on an old quarry— from where stones were extracted for the Arc de Triomphe and the Trocadéro—now a gorgeous cellar/showcase for vintage-dated wines that were walled in during World War II to hide them from the enemy. Famous in the early days for its luxurious baths in every room, the hotel now offers amenities like a magnificent 101 Città all’epoca per i lussuosi bagni in ogni camera, è oggi arricchito da numerosi confort tra cui una magnifica piscina, terrazze panoramiche e l’intimo e pluristellato ristorante Le Cinq. 102 City pool, panoramic terraces and the intimate, award-winning restaurant Le Cinq. With its magnificent 360° view over the city, the princely Suite Royal la Belle Etoile of Le Meurice Hotel (across from the Jardins des Tuileries) is a work of Louis XVI-style splendor, not to mention the Versailles-inspired Restaurant Le Meurice with its gastronomic delights. For thoroughly French charm (exteriors bursting with red geraniums and interiors where the greenery contrasts with red curtains), the Hôtel Plaza Athénée blends the elegance of the past with Art Deco and contemporary flair. Along with suites to suit all tastes, it features Le Relais Plaza (an elegant Alain Ducasse restaurant based on the philosophy of simplicity in cooking and décor), the Dior spa, and private motorboat cruises on the Seine: all extremely exclusive. Since October 2013 the hotel has been under renovation and expansion; it will reopen in the summer of 2014. From these central locations, the best of Paris is at hand: the Arc de Triomphe, Champs-Élysées (synonymous with highend shopping, now somewhat threatened by the small downtown boutiques), Jardins des Tuileries, Galeries Lafayette, Opéra Garnier, the Marais quarter on the right bank of the Seine with its lovely Medieval streets garnished with art galleries and trendy nightspots, Montmartre and its cobblestone streets (the one-time artists’ favorite, with its iconic symbols of entertainment like the Moulin Rouge and of piety like Sacré Coeur), Saint-Germaindes-Prés, and the Latin Quarter, the bustling paradise of students, intellectuals and bons vivants. One of those is Borgonato di Cortefranca, which Distillerie Franciacorta has beautifully restored, highlighting traces of its 13thcentury community as well as the 18th-century complex that developed around the church. This latter, now a multifunctional structure, is the elegant upperfloor setting of the restaurant Due Colombe, which moved here from Rovato (where the Cerveni family ruled the gastronomic scene for three generations) and its old location in the 14th-century water mill. The new backdrop is no less special, with stone walls that speak of history (one room still boasts the coat of arms of Bartolomeo Colleoni, who stopped here in 1447), airy rooms with well-spaced tables so that other people's talking won't disrupt your meal, and large windows that let sunlight in until late. The banquet room in the former church is an intriguing setting for ceremonies, parties and business meetings. In this relaxed and sophisticated atmosphere, Stefano Cerveni, a true culinary artist (he earned his first Michelin star in 2008), works with poise, acumen and the greatest regard for the client: he is gracious and accommodating as befits a real gentleman. Stefano has cooking in his blood: "My high chair was in the kitchen when I was little," he remembers with pride. "As soon as I was tall enough to come up 'above the table,' I began to experiment with cooking." He grew up in the inn/ osteria in Rovato run by his grandmother Elvira since 1955 and then by his father Giuseppe, who—with his strong vocation for cooking— turned the osteria into a restaurant with his wife Clara, serving traditional Brescian dishes enhanced by 105 Ristoranti della tradizione bresciana si sposano con l’innovazione e la qualità della materia prima e del servizio. Stefano was also born with a strong drive for improvement, so in 2000 he moved the restaurant to the ancient water mill, creating an extraordinary "place of taste" and celebrating many achievements, including the Michelin star. But one always needs new incentives, and the chance to move into Borgo Antico was an opportunity he couldn't refuse: to confront the unknown, counting only the strength of his will and confidence in his abilities. Cerveni's philosophy is unchanged: to communicate emotions through cuisine, after "listening to" every ingredient in order to 106 Restaurants ogni ingrediente per unirlo con altri e ottenere, grazie a tecnica e passione, ricette semplici, buone e sane. La cucina di Cerveni ha un grande equilibrio sia tra sapori e colori - dovuto a una sensibilità affinata anche unite it with others, putting technique and passion at the service of uncomplicated food both healthy and delicious. Every dish, therefore, starts from an idea or an intuition and not from a desire to show off; it has to convince the client because it's good, and be understood without fancy commentary: each ingredient should be recognizable just by tasting. Needless to say, Cerveni uses only the best seasonal ingredients available at the market ("scrimping on raw materials is not how we fatten our pockets"), and stays local where possible, without going over the top. Le Due Colombe al Borgo Antico, alongside its à-la-carte menu with traditional or creative cuisine, offers tasting menus like "Two Doves Classics" or "Creativity." These can also be combined with one of the two wine pairing sequences designed by the sommelier. The right pairing is crucial: instead of the wine masking the dish, each should draw out the characteristics of the other. The wine cellar, arranged with reverence and skill in keeping with the menu, is close to the dining room and provides a wide range of the best labels produced in Franciacorta, in Italy (represented in all its complexity, with a slight emphasis on the great reds that complement many signature dishes) and in the world (including a splendid selection of champagnes and French reds). There are so many enticing dishes on the menu that visitors will surely want to return (and the prices, while not inexpensive, are excellent for this caliber of food), but two of them deserve to be tried on the first occasion: Due Colombe oiled beef with polenta (a Grandma Elvira recipe, on the menu since 1955) and Babette's Soup (winner of the 2013 IMAF Chef's Cup). FROM HUNTING TO CAVIAR Azienda Agricola Pisani Dossi is an example of Italian entrepreneurship in which hard work and commitment are a philosophy that have persisted for generations. The company is admired for producing an excellent caviar, deemed by experts and aficionados to be as good as the finest imports. Beyond its image as a glamorous luxury product, caviar is nutritious: it’s rich in protein, iron, phosphorus, magnesium and selenium, and a good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, riboflavin, pantothenic acid and Vitamin B12. It’s also packed with omega-3 fatty acids, known to be very effective in countering high cholesterol. The fact that people generally eat little of it (given its price) may limit its health benefits, but also keeps the detrimental effects of its high sodium content at bay. Wine & Food Caviar is a preparation of salted fish eggs, generally from sturgeon. The lighter the color, the better the quality, according to a three-level scale from 0 (darkest) to the most coveted 000. Other distinguishing factors are the size and texture of the eggs, the taste, and the salt content: a good caviar should not smell fishy or have a pungent taste and the eggs, of uniform size, should not be pressed. Caviar is traditionally made in Russia and Iran, as sturgeon come from the Caspian Sea, from where they swim upstream in the spring—making spectacular leaps as evening falls. At one time they also lived in the Adriatic and along the Po River. Nearly all Italian sturgeon these days is farm raised, and the business is growing fast, in part because this is a superior fish (firm, delicate white flesh with no bones) high in polyunsaturated fats that help reduce cholesterol and the risk of cardiovascular disease. Italy has become a producer of excellent caviar, successful on an international scale, thanks to farms located mostly in Lombardy. One of these is Pisani Dossi, whose aquaculture system built in 1982 uses the purest of water from three 40-meter wells and a natural spring. Through intense research, the company has acquired knowledge unparalleled in Europe, ranging from eel, trout, carp, tench, catfish, pike, and sturgeon to tropi- cal and cold water ornamental fish and fresh- and brackish-water crustaceans. It’s also one of just three Italian aquafarms certified by the Ministry of the Environment for the production of eggs, alevin, fry, and flesh of Acipenseridae (sturgeon). With 15 earthen ponds (total area about 20,000 square meters), 150 tanks located inside and outside a 3,200 square meter greenhouse and cutting-edge technologies for temperature control depending on the species and brood stock conditioning, the farm handles the complete breeding and raising cycle from sturgeon to caviar. Quality is ensured by the choice of species raised, selection of reproducers, and meticulous preparation of the eggs prior to the salting phase, for a product with low salt content and no added preservatives or other type of processing. The fish farm evolved from a hunting reserve founded in 1913 by nobleman Franco Pisani Dossi, managed even then with the greatest regard for nature and the environment, according to the “philosophy of respect” now held dear by the Pisani Dossi aquaculture and caviar business. AN ITALIAN JEWEL Sandro Boscaini, one of the fathers of modern Amarone—the magnificent wine that from the hills of Valpolicella has cast a spell on the world—believes that “Amarone, more than a technique and more than a wine, is a philosophy; an art form in itself.” This one-of-a-kind treasure develops from the loving care normally bestowed on a child: the grapes are carefully selected (merely “the best” won’t do; they have to be perfect), laid out to rest on straw mats called arelle, and checked daily to see how they are drying. A great Amarone is not a commercial endeavor, but a work of art that speaks of the history and uniqueness of a territory. Although its success is relatively recent, Amarone della Valpolicella is rooted in ancient tradition, as we know from archeological finds dating back to the Arusnates—a people of Rhaetian stock who lived in the region before the Roman conquest—whose excellent relationship with wine is suggested by a Bacchus-like god they called Jupiter Feluennis. The Romans enthusiastically continued the wine making tradition, especially in the area now called Valpolicella (whose name makes its first official appearance in a document from 1177), according to remains found in the hamlet of Ambrosan that indicate use of the drying technique still used today for Amarone and Recioto. The wine must have been good, if Virgil praised it in The Georgics and if Catullus in one of his odes spoke of “calices amariores,” that is, goblets of a more bitter wine (due to the almond finish) than those habitually drunk by the Romans. An interesting letter by Cassiodorus, secretary to the Visigoth king Theodoric, describes Acinatico: a wine obtained through a special grape-drying technique and produced in what is now Valpolicella (whose name, some 115 Wine & Food nell’attuale Valpolicella (il nome - secondo alcuni - deriverebbe da “Vallis-polis-cellae”, cioè valle dalle molte cantine). Fondamentale è stata la messa a punto di un innovativo sistema 116 Wine & Food say, may derive from “Vallis-polis-cellae” or valley of the many wine cellars). Acinatico, then, may be considered the ancestor of Recioto, a sweet, velvety wine that was sometimes called “Recioto Amaro” when it would take on bitter overtones (especially in the finish) as a result of imperfect fermentation. Tradition attributes the name Amarone to Adelino Lucchese of the Valpolicella winemakers’ cooperative who, when broaching a forgotten cask of Recioto Amaro in 1936, enthusiastically exclaimed, “This isn’t just Amaro, it’s amarone.” The name immediately stuck, and the Negrar wine makers’ cooperative displays in its entrance a 1942 waybill for “Flasks of Amarone 1938.” At the time, it was a wine produced more by chance than by design. Not until 1953 did Cantina Bolla begin to sell an Amarone made according to a specific production process. It was a hit, but while the experts approved, they did not judge it suitable for the international markets as they found it provincial, unbalanced, somewhat heavy and rustic. That all changed when Boscaini— adding some technical tweaks and aiming for the utmost quality and authenticity—created the modern Amarone that is now symbolic of Verona (nearly on a par with the Arena) and of Italian excellence. I marchi aderenti fanno capo a dodici famiglie storiche: Allegrini, Begali, Brigaldara, Masi Agricola, Musella, Nicolis, Speri, Tedeschi, Tenuta Sant'Antonio, Tommasi, Venturini e Zenato. Wine & Food for long periods on bamboo mats before they are pressed) without allowing mold to grow, recreating the climatic conditions of the very best years. Vaio Armaron Serego Alighieri was the first international success of this new generation, in which sharp intuition blends with pride in tradition and reverence for the terroir. The Amarone that failed to convince the experts in the 1950s and ‘60s—transformed into a bright, dry red with a complex, intense bouquet that is structured, smooth, elegant and finely balanced (while still obtained from the three classic native grapes, dried before they are pressed)— began to achieve the highest international accolades, as in 2009 with Masi Agricola’s Campolongo di Torbe 2004 at the International Wine Challenge in London. Masi Agricola, selected by the Altagamma Foundation to represent made-in-Italy excellence in the highest sector of the market as an expression of Italian style and culture, has five Amaroni (each from a different cru) and is the world’s leading producer of this remarkable, inimitable wine. Boscaini’s calling stems from the 18th century, when his family bought the “Vaio dei Masi,” a small valley in the best winegrowing area of Valpolicella. The estate is still the heart of the company’s land, now extended to the management other highly fa- vorable vineyards. These include land belonging since 1353 to the Counts Serego Alighieri, descendants of Dante; the great poet lived in Verona for some years and his son Pietro decided to stay, acquiring possession in Gargagnago of Casal dei Ronchi—now the home of an exceptional classic Recioto—in the heart of historical Valpolicella. Alongside the Consortium for the Protection of Valpolicella Wines, which coordinates the majority of Amarone producers, the newer association “Le Famiglie dell’Amarone d’Arte” works to defend quality through strict rules of self-governance that help preserve tradition and artisanal workmanship. The participating labels are owned by 12 long-standing families: Allegrini, Begali, Brigaldara, Masi Agricola, Musella, Nicolis, Speri, Tedeschi, Tenuta Sant’Antonio, Tommasi, Venturini and Zenato. Amarone should be served in wide-mouthed glasses so that contact with the air will release its rich aromas, at a temperature of 18 to 20°C (64-68°F). Ideally, it should be aged at least 10 years, and it can easily reach the age of 20. A substantial wine (minimum alcohol content is 14%), it goes perfectly with braised and stewed meats, roasts, game, aged cheeses, and (of course) risotto all’Amarone. A glass of it can also be an excellent companion to nothing more than pleasant conversation. Accanto all’aceto di vino vi sono quelli di mele, miele, sherry, riso, cocco, palma, canna, uva passa, birra, erbe, frutta… in Cina vi è ‘l’aceto nero’ ottenuto da grano, miglio, riso e sorgo e in Giappone Vinegar, from the Latin “vinum acetum,” makes an appearance in many languages (the French “vinaigrette” is especially melodic). The first vinegar we know of was made by the Egyptians, using honey, long before grapes were cultivated. Along with wine vinegar we now have varieties made from apples, honey, sherry, rice, coconut, palm, sugar cane, raisins, beer, herbs, fruit and more. In China there’s “black vinegar” obtained from wheat, millet, rice and sorghum, and the Japa- 120 TRADITIONAL BALSAMIC VINEGAR: AN ITALIAN STANDOUT Wine & Food quello di ‘kombucha’ (cultura simbiotica di lieviti e batteri aromatizzata con fragole, more e mirtilli). Con Napoleone l’aceto balsamico divenne ‘democratico’: l’Imperatore, occupata Modena, smantellò le nese have “kombucha” (a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast, flavored with strawberries, blackberries and blueberries). Italy has a rare and exquisite contribution: traditional balsamic vinegar from Modena, made from a reduction of pressed, unfermented grapes (also called cooked must). Its origins are undocumented, but in De Re Coquinaria, Apicius describes products based on cooked must that the Romans used on long journeys and that when dissolved in water would ferment into wine. According to Columella (a Latin author and agricultural expert), the must from the area around modernday Modena would tend to sour even after cooking; but we assume it did so pleasantly, if over the centuries it has grown so famous. The first record of our vinegar is from 1046: the monk Donizone writes that the father of Matilde di Canossa, at the request of Henry III of Germany (on his way to being crowned Holy Roman Emperor), gave Henry a solid silver barrel containing a special vinegar, its worth demonstrated by a gift of equivalent value—dozens of horses with their saddles and several birds of prey— sent by the Duke of Mantua. The term “balsamic” appears in 1747, in the “Register of grape harvests and wines” of Modena’s Cantine Segrete Ducali, to distinguish it from other vinegars. La maturazione in botte di legno varia tra 60 giorni e 3 anni (definito ‘Invecchiato’). 122 Wine & Food tled the ducal vinegar factories and sold the barrels to the richest families, giving rise to the first private vinegar factories that later became a tradition for well-off families. King Victor Emmanuel II, bringing his gourmet palate to Modena in 1859, was struck by the “black jewel” discovered in the attic of the Ducal Palace and had the best barrels sent to his castle in Moncalieri. He almost certainly tried to make his own, but without the right grapes and the Modenese tradition... By the turn of the 20th century, balsamic vinegar could be found at the most important trade fairs (Italian and international), attracting so much acclaim that in 1933 the government issued its first authorization for the production of “aceto balsamico del modenese.” The tradition has now branched into two products, both made from grape must, but produced somewhat differently: Aceto balsamico di Modena IGP and Aceto balsamico tradizionale (di Modena or Reggio Emilia, depending on the province of origin). Aceto balsamico di Modena IGP (“Protected Geographical Indication,” which can only be made and aged in the provinces of Modena and Reggio Emilia) is known for its ability to enhance the flavors and fragrances of any dish. These vinegars are produced from just seven certified varieties of grape, plus wine vinegar and sometimes cooked must. They mature in wooden casks from 60 days to three years (“aged”). Wine & Food plexity on the palate, and above all the finely balanced sweet and sour notes. This is a highly versatile vinegar, and it’s wise to keep a set of them on hand (Manicardi, a young producer but well grounded in the best Modenese tradition, offers some 10 different varieties; Giuseppe Giusti sells a set of five) for elegant pairings that will turn everyday food into a luxury. Aceto balsamico tradizionale DOP (“Protected Designation of Origin”) is made exclusively from the cooked must of grapes grown around Modena at vineyards with PDO status. Production is based on a series of barrels of different woods (these may include chestnut, oak, mulberry, ash, cherry and juniper) placed in decreasing order by size; every year, each of the barrels is filled up with the vinegar from the barrel that precedes it, with the finished product in the last (smallest) barrel. The vinegar is aged for a minimum of 12 years (affinato, recognizable by the white seal), from which point about three liters a year can be extracted from the original 100liter set of barrels. The quality of the vinegar improves with time: after 25 years, it becomes extra vecchio (gold seal). Each extraction is examined by the certification body, which authorizes use of the iconic bottle designed by Giugiaro, a symbol and a guarantee (along with the numbered seal) of the product’s uniqueness. Overseeing this Italian standout is the Consorzio Tutela Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena DOP, whose chairman Enrico Corsini, after specifying that both Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena DOP and Aceto Balsamico IGP are “certified and guaranteed to the con- sumer and fully symbolize the Italian gastronomic tradition,” has urged the public to beware of imitations that fail to follow the stringent rules. Each producer selects the wood or woods for its own barrels, based in part on family experience through the centuries. Balsamic vinegar is sublime with cheese (especially parmigiano reggiano), braised and boiled meats and steamed vegetables, and extraordinary drizzled on strawberries, ice cream and oysters. To preserve its flavor and complex bouquet, it should be added (preferably using a 12 year old affinato) just before removing food from the flame, or on the warm plated dish before serving. Extra vecchio is best for hot foods, cheese, fruit and ice cream. Balsamic vinegar is a noble product still based on the principle expressed by Giuseppe Giusti himself (of the famous acetaia, in operation since 1605): “The perfection of these ‘balsamic’ vinegars of Modena depends on three conditions only, namely the selection of grapes, the quality of the containers, and time.” The same philosophy guides the descendants who now run the business, where visitors can admire hundreds of casks and barrels from the 1600s, 1700s and 1800s—still in use today. Ecco come la maison rende omaggio all'arte antica dell'orologeria. Per Every dial is a starry sky: a bridge between heaven and earth. And more concretely, a bridge between the unsurpassed teachings of master watchmakers from the 1700s and the materials technology of the 21st century. What better rendez-vous to produce beauty that lasts over time? This dichotomy between art and science is the philosophy of De Bethune, the company that David Zanetta, a Swiss businessman and lifelong watch aficionado, founded in 2002 in La Chaux l’Auberson: the heart of top-end watchmaking in the green hills of the Swiss Jura valley. At his side he hired Denis Flageollet, a fourthgeneration watchmaker from a family of hands and minds expert in complications dating back four centuries, and in exquisite workmanship that would be a shame to forget in the midst of t o d a y’s technical perfection. I t would be like losing memories forever. So De Bethune turns to blue not only for its steel cases and hands, a reminder of that regal color once so difficult to obtain (the blue comes from heating the metal with a flame, just as artisans did centuries ago by hand), but also for titanium, a material that looks to the future. This is De Bethune’s tribute to the ancient art of watchmaking. The result is the sophisticated elegance we prize today, relieved of excess, the better to underscore substance. La storia di un nome, De Bethune e dei suoi orologi, gli Skybridge o gli avveniristici Dream Watch ,è racchiusa proprio in questa frase. mechanism: titanium for the inner part of the balance wheel and platinum for the outer part make for an ideal mass/inertia ratio, an achievement patented in 2004. Then there’s silicon, a substance borrowed from computer technology that’s unaffected by magnetic fields, which Zanetta and Flageollet ingeniously used in the first freesprung balance (2006). De Bethune in numeri All'interno della maison si producono oltre 3500 diversi componenti, tutti fatti rigorosamente a mano, questo significa che i pezzi prodotti sono limitati, po- De Bethune in numbers De Bethune produces more than 3,500 different components in-house, all strictly by hand. This means the pieces are limited to just a few hundred each year. The watches The crossroads between mechanical watchmaking and modern materials science presents an ambitious goal: to produce watches that are ever more perfect and one-of-a-kind. Beyond the heart of the watch, technological progress is also evident in its mechanism and the complexity of its functions. Every detail contributes to the unique timepiece, and forms are no exception, as De Bethune devotes itself to new possibilities for aesthetic and ergonomic bliss. Here, for example, is a patented new system of floating lugs, which without compromising the cleanliness and rigor of the case, follow the natural shape of the wrist so the watch sits like a fine piece of jewelry. And the path of innovation is still long; there will be many surprises and discoveries along the way. Safekeeping the techniques and teachings of time is an important task for creating something truly new and everlasting. As David Zanetta and Denis Flageollet often say, “our roots are sunk in history, but our mind is projected toward the future.” De Bethune and the names of its watches - a Skybridge or a futuristic Dream Watch - are embodied in that very phrase. Born in Pieve di Cadore sometime between 1488 and 1490 to a family of numerous artists, he is considered one of the most important interpreters of Europe in the 1500s, capable of expressing infinite and exhilarating beauty while leaving a mark on later painting and raising the admiration of his contemporaries: wealthy clients and collectors, doges, the Este and Della Rovere families, the European courts, Emperor Charles V and his son Philip II, and popes. With support from his well-off family, Titian built a workshop that served as a sort of proto-assembly line (at the time, works were frequently reproduced as the uniqueness of the original was not highly valued) and amassed a small fortune. Titian has been studied and analyzed at length; an exhibition in Venice has examined his later works and another in Rome has focused on his artistic and existential journey. Now the artist has "returned" to his native soil, thanks to the unusual exhibition Tiziano: Venezia e il papa Borgia (Venice and the Borgia Pope), which at Palazzo Cosmo examines the younger works and in particular the recently restored masterpiece Jacopo Pesaro Being Presented by Pope Alexander VI to Saint Peter (housed at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp, currently under renovation), with an emphasis on the TITIAN, FROM THE DOLOMITES TO THE WORLD Art of yesterday 141 Arte di ieri ad Anversa presso il Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten ora in fase di ammodernamento) approfondendone il contesto epocale, lo stile e i personaggi. 142 historical context, style and personae. Sixteen works help us gain a better understanding of the artist in the lovely town of Pieve di Cadore, an important communications center, where five hundred years of history have enriched but not distorted or eclipsed the ancient fabric. Not far from the piazza, we can still visit Titian's birthplace, a typical two-story home (the floors connected by an outdoor staircase) with a small studio frescoed with grotesques and a fir and larch wood roof. The building is now home to the Fondazione Centro Studi Tiziano e Cadore which, with its Titian library, not only jealously preserves relics like signed letters and the diploma with which Emperor Charles V named him a Count Palatine, but also delves into his work by emphasizing the magical aura one breathes, today as yesterday, among these Dolomite mountains covered in emerald green and iridescent hues. We can imagine him as a child, mythicized somewhat by the traditional narrative, showing an early aptitude and interest in painting as he extracts the colored nectar from flowers. After being sent with his brother Francesco to live in Venice at the house of Antonio (perhaps his paternal uncle), around 1504, he most likely apprenticed first with the mosaic artist Sebastiano Zuccato, then with Gentile and Giovanni Bellini—interacting with German engravers, maybe even Albrecht Dürer himself, and trying his hand at xylography—and finally with Giorgione. None of his early work is dated with certainty until 1508, when he was hired (thanks to political connections and also evidently to save money by assigning the task to a youngster, however good) to fresco the Mercerie side of the Fondaco dei Tedeschi—rebuilt after a devastating fire. The same year, perhaps thanks to the loyalty to Venice shown by his father Gregorio, defender of Cadore, he was commissioned to paint the Battle of Cadore for the Hall of the Great Council in the Ducal Palace; we also know that he painted The Flight into Egypt for Andrea Loredan and part of the decoration of the family palazzo. 144 as Bernardo Bembo (the famous humanist and father of Pietro of the celebrated Portrait) and a great many printers. His workshop now became a launch pad toward the rest of the world, thanks in part to the frescoes painted in Padua at the Basilica del Santo. His gorgeous works, generally religious and mythological subjects and portraits that do not shy away from physical and psychological features, show particular care in the brushstrokes of color, blended masterfully with the grammar of composition until his later years, when the colors dissolve to express more shades of darkness and night. One example of this later style is his final work Pietà, a large ex voto against the plague epidemic that was raging the year he died, at the peak of this artistic moment. Among the outstanding works of his earlier phases, how could we forget the chromatic mastery of Flora, both modest and voluptuous; Man with a Glove, with its infinite shades of light; and the warm blond tones of the flowing hair of the beautiful Maddalena, her ecstatic eyes brimming with tears: tasteful sensuality, dignity and grace are the unwavering elements of his brush. A sensitive interpreter of his times and their changing tastes, Titian was affected by his own family situation, and changed style after his wife Cecilia died giving birth to his beloved Lavinia. Despite help from his son Orazio, relatives and assistants, he was unable to repair his poor relationship with his son Pomponio. Upon his father's death (Venice, 1576), Pomponio sold the house in Pieve where the artist loved to return to escape the summer heat and above all to "love his dear birthplace and try to honor it and nurture its concerns," as Titian wrote in a letter of 1572 addressed to the Magnifica Comunità di Cadore. No matter how often his work is scrutinized in exhibits around the world, Pablo Ruiz Picasso, the 20thcentury genius whose kaleidoscopic personal and artistic path zig-zagged between genius and recklessness, never ceases to amaze for his energy and tireless output: during some periods of his life he produced seven works a day! Pablo was the son of María Picasso López (so adored that when he was 19, he took her last name) and José Ruiz Blasco, a naturalist painter, teacher, and Pablo's first master of drawing and "sentimental education" as a regular at brothels, where he "weaned" his 13-year-old PICASSO: MEDITERRANEAN MAN 145 Arte del ‘900 modo il figlio tredicenne), nasce nel 1881 nel porto andaluso di Malaga e manifesta fin da giovane una vena artistica - indirizzata non solo dalla famiglia, ma anche da istituti d’arte - che, partendo dalla tradizione classica di cui assimila i canoni di naturalismo e monumentalità, si evolve attraverso un iter composito e articolato. Born in 1881 in the Andalusian port of Malaga, at a young age Pablo showed artistic talent—nurtured by his family and art institutes—that began with the classical tradition and a firm grip on its precepts of naturalism and monumentality and then wended its way through an elaborate, multi-faceted journey. It could hardly have been otherwise for an artist born on the calm and wild, luminous and dark Mediterranean who always made his way back there, until he died in the Côte d'Azur town of Mougins in 1973. From his birthplace of Spain he forged a mighty bond with the South of France, so beloved because it reminded him of his childhood by the sea, his first source of inspiration. The story is told cheerfully in Picasso Côte d’Azur, one of two complementary modules making up the intriguing exhibit Monaco Celebrates Picasso at the Grimaldi Forum (www.grimaldiforum.com, www.visitmonaco.com) on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of his death. A warm yellow light bathes about 60 wonderful memories of his summer holidays on the French Riviera, from the early '20s to 1946: Antibes-Juans-les-Pins with Villa Chêne-Roc against a joyous night sky, the fairy-tale-like Paysage vallonné et fleuri avec maison sur la gauche and the deeply dreamlike Les Toits rouges et bleus; Golfe Juan; Mougins and Monaco appear in different shapes and sizes depending on the materials the artist could carry on the train. The other module, Picasso dans la Collection Nahmad, presents 116 masterpieces (1901-1972) collected since 1960 by Ezra and David Nahmad, who lived first in Milan and then in Monaco. White and luminous is the light that shows off the quality of these works, displayed as themes and variations: the "woman sitting" with the lively Femme à l’oiseau (Dora Mar), tributes to Manet with variations on Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe and to Delacroix with his Femmes d'Alger studies, plus the remarkable series Peintre et son modèle, Nature morte… The exhibition represents a life in which personal affairs, articulated by the conception of a woman as defenseless object/subject yet also inspiring muse, were turned into art. Having studied in La Coruña, Barcelona and Madrid, Picasso showed his work in 1900 at the Bohemian 20th - century art 147 Arte del ‘900 presso Els Quatre Gats, cabaret di bohèmien e nello stesso anno visita a Parigi l’Esposizione Universale cui partecipa con Science et Charité. Nel 1927 conosce la diciassettenne Marie-Thérése Walter il cui corpo sinuoso gli ispira monumenta148 café Els Quatre Gats in Barcelona, and in the same year presented Science et Charité at the World's Fair in Paris. He returned often to the French capital, showing works at Ambroise Vollard's gallery on social alienation and poverty during his Blue Period. In 1904 he settled at Bateau-Lavoir, a humble abode in Montmartre, where he lived with model Fernande Olivier. His works turned toward the "rose" of Harlequins, acrobats and nude sculpture, including the 1907 masterpiece Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. Picasso stayed in Paris until the first World War, painting alongside Georges Braque and experimenting with Cubism. In Italy he designed sets and costumes for Diaghilev's Russian ballet, where he met and married Olga Khokhlova. With their son Paulo, born in 1921, they went back to Paris from where vacations at the sea led to the famous classical-leaning Baigneuses; a few years later, his use of vivid colors and the interlaced body parts of lovers in Le Baiser would suggest a violent turn in the relationship. In this period Picasso also did many engravings, including a series of lithographs on the theme "the artist and his model." In 1933-34 he made his final trips to Spain with his wife and son, concentrating on bullfighting and the Minotaur, themes of symbolic importance. In 1936, a year after separating from Olga, Picasso met his new companion and muse: photographer Dora Maar. They made frequent trips to Antibes, where he painted Pêche de Nuit ad Antibes and in 1937 the celebrated Guernica, in which Dora appears as a weeping woman. World War II left a mark on Dora's health, and in 1943 the young painter Françoise Gilot entered Picasso's life, to stay for about a decade. She would give him a son, Claude (1947) and a daughter, Paloma (1949) and inspire his famous Antibes painting La Joie di Vivre, where as a nymph she dances with centaurs and fauns. This is when Picasso began working for the Madoura pottery studio in Vallauris, mostly on the theme of his quasi-alter-ego, the bull; in 1948 he would buy a house here called La Galloise, where the couple lived when not in Paris. He officially joined the Communist-leaning "Mouvement de la Paix" and had his sculpture Homme avec mouton installed in the center of Vallauris, where the Medieval chapel he decorated became the temple of peace. In 1953, Gilot left with the children, and Picasso consoled himself with Jacqueline Roque Hutin, his second wife. After some time in Paris painting variations on Femme d'Alger, he moved to the French Riviera and worked right until the epilogue of his long life. The son of an English teacher and a history teacher, Fiol grew up surrounded by books, images and stories. He attended several drawing and sculpture lessons but to please his father he started to study medicine, which he later abandoned. In 1998 he made his first trip to Europe, where he first came face to face with the great masterpieces of art. The lonely, raw Milan of his early years inspired his series of Gladiators, “fighters for life.” As in his painting, Fiol makes a personal foray into the Italian art scene. Always in the background, his work remains unknown to the public at large, his space visited by just a few friends. In 2006 he painted the 151 Arte di oggi pochi amici.
