Knowledge
At the end of the course the student must be able to demonstrate that he/she is well acquainted with the fundamental problems of the history of
the early modern period.

The student will need to demonstrate the ability to analyze and undertand the various historigraphic prospectives and lines of research as they
relate to the subject matter of the course; and be able to illustrate them critically.

Assessment of the abilities will be carried out during the final exam, discussing the texts in the reading list and what has been said during the
lectures.
Behaviors
The student must participate actively and attentively in the lectures comprised in the course.

The willingness to participate actively in the course and its activities will be assessed during the course itself.
Prerequisites
Basic knolwedge of the history of the early modern period
Co-requisites
Ability to read and understand texts in Latin, English, French and Spanish
Teaching methods
Reading and analysis of historiographical works and texts and published and unpublished documents.
Syllabus
The course foresees introductory lectures on the fundamental themese of modern history, starting with the explorations and continuing until the
end of the Napoleonic period; the following lectures will explore in greater depth the history of the Spanish Empire in Europe and in the New
World. These lectures will include the reading and analysis of published and unpublished texts and documents.

The examination muat be prepared on the basis of:
a) a university level handbook of Early Modern History, to be approved by the professor and studied in conjunction with a historical atlas.
b) one or more texts among those listed below, to be approved by the professor, for a total of around 600 pages.
