L’idea di un film a episodi sulla capitale francese è del giovane produttore e regista Barbet Schroeder
che, per documentare un momento di profondo cambiamento del volto della città, chiede a sei registi
di utilizzare le economiche tecniche leggere del documentario (16mm, suono in presa diretta, ecc.) e di
scegliere un quartiere nel quale ambientare una piccola storia. Gli episodi del film sono: La muette, SaintGermain-des-Prés, Montparnasse Levallois, rue Saint-Denis, place de l’Etoile, Gare du Nord.
The young producer and director Barbet Schroeder ideated a film in several episodes about the French
capital. He wanted to document the profound change that is taking place in the city. Six directors were
each asked to choose a district in the city where a short story could be enacted. They made use of the
light, economical equipment used for documentaries (16mm, direct sound recording, etc.). The six episodes are as follows: La muette, Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Montparnasse Levallois, rue Saint-Denis, place de
l’Etoile, Gare du Nord.
I registi del film (Chabrol, Douchet, Godard, Rohmer, Pollet) provengono
quasi tutti dalla Nouvelle Vague che non ha mai mancato di rappresentare in modo dettagliato e affettuoso la città di Parigi. Fa eccezione Rouch, documentarista etnologo molto vicino al movimento, che firma Gare
du Nord, rivisitazione del piano-sequenza e del sonoro in presa diretta,
utilizzati come strumenti di indagine della realtà.
Five of the directors (Chabrol, Douchet, Godard, Rohmer and Pollet)
come from the Nouvelle Vague, which has always taken great pains to
portray Paris in a detailed and affectionate way. The sixth director is Rouch, an ethnological documentary producer who is close to the above
movement. He realized ‘Gare du Nord’, a revisitation with direct filming of
sequences and direct sound recording, enabling a survey of reality.
