OVERVIEW
• Duration of course: Three days + one optional day (restricted to 24 participants).
• Course structure: 7.5 hours didactics, 4 hours hands-on drills, 5 hours simulation.
• Maximum number of attendees: 48
• Principle aim: To introduce the fundamentals and convey the current state of extracorporeal techniques
in the management of critically ill infants and children. To strengthen clinical and technical skills through
hands-on sessions and high-fidelity medical simulation.
• Target audience: Critical care physicians, nurses, and perfusionists who are currently involved in the
care of patients requiring extracorporeal support or who are managing or developing an ECMO
program.
• Hands-on practical sessions: Participants will be able to prime and troubleshoot ECMO systems, and
also interact with the various vendors. Perfusionists from Gaslini Children’s Hospital will facilitate.
• Simulation Component: Attendees will participate in a full day of simulation which includes three
scenarios. The attendees will be split into 2 groups; each scenario will have a maximum of 8 principle
participants. As part of the registration a survey will be completed in order to determine attendees’
clinical role and experience level so that simulation sessions can be tailored. A fourth day will be
dedicated to the simulation of an ECMO transport.
AIMS
The course will cover the main principles and applications of extracorporeal life support in newborns and
children. Some of the most innovative aspects of ECMO treatment will be treated (congenital diaphragmatic
hernia, septic shock, bridge to lung transplant, trauma), including ECMO transport. Participants will acquire
the theoretical principles of extracorporeal life support and will consolidate their knowledge through practical
hands on sessions in small groups. The course will include frontal lessons and practical work on the ECMO
pumps and circuits. Advanced simulation case scenarios will be administered to the participants and
discussed, using cannulable mannequins in a realistic ICU setting. The course is directed to neonatal and
pediatric intensivists, cardiologists, cardiac and pediatric surgeons, nurses and ECMO specialists.
