8:50: Assieme agli studenti Olandesi, di Riga e di Vallblona ci siamo recati a scuola e siamo stati
accolti dal Vice Preside
09.30 -10.15 Abbiamo visitato il municipio di Veendam e siamo stati accolti dalle autorità
governative locali
10.50- 11.20 Presentazione reciproca di tutti nella scuola
12.45 -13.00 Assieme agli studenti di Riga e Olandesi ci siano recati al museo locale di storia
14.15 15.30 visita di Veendam
19.45.-21.00 Concerto di musica e di ballo offerto dall’orchestra della Winkler School e di alcuni di
Riga e balletti con gli studenti di Riga

13:30 con gli studenti di Riga e di Danzica ci siamo recati a Groningen e abbiamo visitato la città e
il Northern Shipmuseum

Olanda (Dighe, canali […]) e visione di un video su Anna Frank.
14:30 con gli studenti di Riga e Danzica ci siamo recati nella Reitdiep-Coast Bus (La diga che
separa il mare del nord dal lago dolce artificiale nel nord dell’Olanda vicino alle Freeisland).

“Mainstation of Groningen”
At the end of the ninenteeth century, this magnificent bilding was designed and built by Isaac
Gosschalk. He was the founder of the Dutch Renaissance ( a revival period of the arts and literature).
This is also reflected in the building with a richly decarated ceiling, beautiful paneling and many
symbolic representations in the tiles.
1.Groningen Museum
The Groningen Museum was created by several architects, with Sandro Medini as the main architect.
Medini had the philosophy that all art movements are equally important. To achieve this Medini
worked with other architects. This has led to a building of various styles (modern and historical).
It is striking that the building behind the entrance of the Groningen Museum a (modern copy) of the
“Engelenburcht” from Rome. Further is in the large square building the storage of the museum. This
is made of gold, because Medini saw this place as the treasure of art.

Currently, the Folkingestraat is place of filibusters and a mixture of cultures. The Folkingstraat was
before WWII the heart of the Jewish Society and the commercial centre of Groningen. Many
monuments and buildings still refer to this time.
At he beginning of the street there is a bronze door without a heck. This monuments reminds us of
all the nearly 3,000 Jews in Groningen who had “closed” their doors ( they were exported to the
concentration camps), but never came back (because they didn’t get this opportunity).
A little further on in the street there is a Jewish Synagogue. Above the entrance is written. “Blessed
is he who enter here”. The building was used, during the war, as a storage site for ingested radios,
copper and tin. Fortunately, precious monuments and books were removed out of the synagogue
before the Germans arrived.
Adjacent to the folkingestraat there is the red-light district of Groningen. The street is 24-hours
crowded by people!
If you walk further in the street you can find in the porticoes of folkingestraat 10, 20, 47 (porticoes)
photos of people out of the past, who are having a party. These pictures symbolize “that man should

enjoy every day, because before you know it life is over”. (foto)
At the end of the street, on the Folkingestraat 9b (side of the house), you can see the Dutch
inscription “veggehaald”. This means “removed”. It refers to all Jewish who were removed out of
Groningen during the Second world War.
4. Korenbeurs
In the Middle Ages there was a thriving grain trade in Groningen and the cereals were traded in this
building. The Korenbeurs is an impressive building, where the figures of Neptune (god of the sea),
Ceres ( god of agriculture) and Mecurius (god of commerce) are shown. People worshipped the gods
because they hoped that by praying the marked would be prosperous forever. On the side of the
building you can see a lot of windows. They were necessary in order to check if the quality of the
cereals was good.
5. A-Kerk
The Aa-church is a Gothic church. Its name refers to the Aa, a river that at that time had an important
function for the shippers and merchants in the western cities. They sought peace and hope in the
church.
The French used the church as a training ground for their army. The church has been neglected for a
lonf time because of declining popularity of religion in the Netherlands.
6. Academiegebouw

The academy building is the second oldest university of the Netherlands. (Leiden is the oldest one).
Formerly, the building was a large monastery in the old centre of the town.
In the middle of the top displays the Dutch Lion, a statue of Minerva (goddess of intellect), below
the arms of the University and at the bottom in bays loaded images, Scientia (god of science) and
History (god of history) proposals. Also on the left column of the image Prudentia (god of life
wisdom) and to the right column Mathematica (god of logic).
It is striking that the interior of the building has a less classic look. Each faculty has its own room,
where graduate students get their grade, with their own colour. For instance, the Economic
Department has the colour green.
7. Goudkantoor
The building has the Renaissance style. The building was given by the French “Caesar” in order to
collect taxes out of people. In the gavel of the building is written: “Give the emperor what belongs
to and becomes the emperor”.
In the nineteenth century the building got its final name. In the building one could certify his gold
and receive an official guarantee.
8. Grote markt

The grote markt is the centre of the city.
“Town hall”
Over decades in this building the decisions are taken for the city. The building consists of several
large rooms. Previously there was a wine room, because at that time it was believed that the best
decisions could be taken when “ the spirit was open”. There was also a prison in the basement of the
building with the name of “de schoonmakersgat”
“Vindicat-clubhouse”
The building “Mutua Fides” is now a student society. In the Second World War the building was
used by the German SS and SD for interrogation of a lot of Jews and Dutch people who found a
gruesome death in the cellars.
9. Prinsenhof
This building was built in the 15th century. It was originally designed as a monastery and church,but
soon after its completion the Bishop died because of the plague. The building was then owned by the
government, but the major of the city decided not to live there for 5 months, because he was afraid of
the plague. It was of no avall, because shortly after he moved into the building he died of the plague.
Later on, the building had various functions: chemical lab, school and military hospital. Also the
regional radio and television started in this building.
10. Prinsentuin

The Prinsentuin is an example of a Renaissance garden. It was made when the Cityholder Willem
Frederik was in charge of Groningen. The two letters S and A you can see at the two edges stand for
Willem and his wife Albertine.
Further on, the garden is surrounded by a high wall. On one side you can see a piece of the “blue
wall” that once stood on top of this wall.
The garden has a sundial. In the upper falls of the sundial you can read in Latin: “The past is nothing,
the future is uncertain, the present is inconstant; make sure you don’t waste your time”
11. Martinitoren
The Martini Tower is 97 meters high and the head of its church. Previously it was a Catholic church
with a huge number of valuable objects, like the “arm of John the Baptist”, All the images
disappeared when it became a Protestant church. Up to the 19th century riche people could be buried
here. Because of the tremendous smell they were called “the stinking rich”.
The tower was used for centuries as a fireguard. The tower guards had to blow on their horns in all
directions, every quarter of an hour, indicating that everything was safe.

The hiders
Auguste van Pels: Auguste cooked most of the time for the people in the Achterhuis. She thought
that Anne and Margot did not help enough in the household.
Edith Frank: Edith Frank found support in her religion. She did not get along very well with the Van
Pels family.
Margot Frank: Anne’s older sister. She also kept a diary, but this was lost.
Herman van Pels: together with Otto Frank he was director of the company at Prinsengracht. Only a
few pictures are known of him.
Peter van Pels: Peter and Anne were in love with each other for a while. From him she received her
first kiss.
Anne Frank: she received a diary for her 13th birthday. Several weeks later, she and her family had
to hide.
Fritz Pfeifer: Fritz and Anne shared a small bedroom. He criticized Anne a lot.
She was often angry with him. Fritz had the same age as Anne’s father.
Otto Frank: Otto is the only one of the hiders who survived the camps.
The Helpers
Johannes Kleiman: with Johannes all the problems were discussed. Anne speaks of him with
admiration in her diary.
Bep Voskuijl: Bep had most contact with Anne. Almost every night she had dinner with the hiders.
Miep Gies: together with Bep she took care of the daily groceries.
Victor Kugler: he made sure there was enough money and supplied the families with newspapers and
magazines.
