JOSE MARIA LO MONACO
Mezzosoprano
José Maria Lo Monaco was born in Catania where she graduated in
piano and began studying singing with mezzo-soprano Bianca Maria Casoni.
At a very young age, she won several international contests quickly becoming
a point of reference of the new generation of Italian mezzo.
She debuted at the Teatro alla Scala in Dido and Aeneas of Purcell
under the baton of Christopher Hogwood and in Rossini’s Petite Messe
Solennelle.
Among her most recent success we mention: Rossini’s Cenerentola
(title-role) with Evelino Pido and Daniele Abbado in Reggio Emilia, Bari and
Cagliari; the principal role of Timante in Jommelli’s Demofoonte under the
baton of Ricardo Muti, staged by Cesare Levi at the Salzburg Festival and
Opéra de Paris; Cherubino and Dorabella in Nozze di Figaro and Così fan Tutte at Teatro La Fenice.
Recently she had a great personal success as Isolier in Comte Ory at Teatro alla Scala with Juan Diego Florez as Comte.
She debuted Carmen at the Opéra National de Lyon staged by Olivier Py that was awarded “production of the year” by
Mezzo television.
During her latest seasons she sang: Elisabetta, Maria Stuarda with Mariella Devia in Donizetti Bergamo Festival; Rosina,
Barbiere di Siviglia in Modena staged by Damiano Michieletto; Maddalena in Rigoletto in Aix en Provence Festival under the
baton of Noseda, staged by Robert Carsen; Isaura, Tancredi at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysée with Enrique Mazzola.
She has also sung several roles of the traditional operatic repertoire: Neris in Cherubini’s Medea with Evelino Pidò; Smeton
in Anna Bolena in Firenze with Riccardo Abbado and Graham Vick; Pippo in Rossini’s La Gazza Ladra; Emilia on Rossini’s
Otello with Anna Caterina Antonacci and Evelino Pidò in Lyon, Paris and Brussels; Smeton in Donizetti’s Anna Bolena with
Roberto Abbado and Graham Vick in Firenze; Agnese in Beatrice di Tenda by Bellini and title role of Orfeo ed Euridice by
Gluck in Catania; Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte with Barbara Frittoli in Menorca.
She is fond of baroque repertoire and collaborated with several important orchestra with original instruments: Giuditta in
Betulia Liberata at the Musikfest Bremen and Vivaldi’s Tito Manlio in London Barbican with Ottavio Dantone; Haydn’s
Arianna a Naxos with the Netherlands Bach Society; Alcina in Orlando Furioso by Vivaldi whit J.C.Spinosi in Bilbao and in
Valladolid, Tamiri in Farnace by Vivaldi in Théâtre de Champs Elysées; Alceste in Handel’s Admeto with Alan Curtis in Krakow;
Cornelia in Giulio Cesare with Ottavio Dantone on tour in several Italian theatres; Nerone in Agrippina under the baton of Paul
McCreesh in Vlaams and also with Fabio Biondi in Krakow.

She has been chosen to sing Stabat Mater by Rossini in Vatican under the baton of J. L. Cobos for S.S. Pope Benedict XVI
and the president of Italian Republic.
In Monteverdi’s repertoire Josè Maria lo Monaco sang Messaggera and Speranza in Monteverdi’s Orfeo with Andrea Marcon
at the Monteverdi Festival in Cremona and again with Jordi Savall in a European tour. With Claudio Cavina and la Venexiana she
record for Glossa the trilogy with Orfeo (Gramophone Award 2008), Ottone in L’Incoronazione di Poppea and Penelope in Il
Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria. She recently sang Ottavia in Incoronazione di Poppea on stage with Pizzi and Alan Curtis in
Florence.
Future and present projects include: title-role, Cenerentola at the Opéra de Toulon and Rennes; title-role of Carmen in
Guadalajara (Mexico); title-role in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas in Florence new opera house; Don Giovanni, Zerlina in Bejiing
NCPA; Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with Jean Christophe Spinosì, Ensemble Matheus in a European tour ; Magnificat by Bach
with Antonio Pappano in Santa Cecilia ...
